Building a Custom 70s F1 Car - rFactor2

  • The 1970s were a time of massive innovation in Formula 1. In the span of 10 years Grand Prix Cars went from the Cigar-shaped beauties of the 1960s to the Ground-Effect spaceships of the future. When looking back it is sometimes hard to appreciate the level of innovation which took place in this time. Luckily ChiefWiggum has put together one of the coolest mods I've seen for rFactor2 which lets you swap parts and build your own 70s aero champion Lego-style! So lets test out a few combinations and find out how much the same basic car really does change with these changes.

    It would be cool to have a league where everyone starts off with the stock model and chooses research that happens over time.

    The late 60s high wings attached directly to the suspension pick up points were far more efficient than the later solutions in the 70s. In general the higher the wing the more downforce you got per wing angle and having that downforce applied directly where it is needed made quite a difference. It’s only because these wings were banned that forced the teams to find other solutions.

    • @greghudson6861
      @greghudson6861 3 роки тому +6

      You're right, although the reason the high wings were banned was because they were so large they generated too much downforce and would often cause the struts they were mounted on to fail catastrophically. I don't need to tell you when happens when a car being pushed into the ground by that kind of force is unloaded when the wing fails.

    • @ZZPxFTW
      @ZZPxFTW 3 роки тому +1

      You'll have to explain because that doesn't make sense to me. Once out of the turbulent wake of the cars own bodywork, there would be no benefit for a higher wing. The air would be approaching the wing at the same speed, and in a laminar fashion regardless of its height, making the higher wing heavier, and heightening the center of mass of the car, while providing no efficiency benefits. Also, a wing mounted further back on a vehicle will act as a lever, multiplying its forces on the rear wheels in relation to how far away it is from the axle because the suspension/wheels are the only way for that force to applied to the road. This is much more efficient than applying that force directly to the suspension.

    • @rich1701
      @rich1701 2 роки тому

      @@ZZPxFTW higher wings away from the bodywork are more efficient exploiting the cleanest airflow possible. See the rule changes for the 1995 f1 regulations where the fia lowered the height of the rear wing to reduce downforce. The optimum means to attach the wing pickup points is on the suspension as the load is transferred directly through the tyres. particularly in the more flexible chassis of the 60s and 70s.

    • @ZZPxFTW
      @ZZPxFTW 2 роки тому

      @@rich1701 the FIA introduced many aerodynamic changes to the rules to reduce downforce in 1995. The primary losses in downforce were seen due to the rule changes for the floors, not so much the 10cm lower rear wings. I'm trying to understand how you believe "in general the higher the wing, the more downforce you got per wing angle," given the information I believe to be true that I mentioned in my last comment. Once past the turbulent boundary layer of bodywork - which isn't even that far off the body work - additional height would be futile for downforce and efficiency due to the air attacking the wing already being laminar. It cant get any "cleaner." My understanding of physics make me believe the downward force of the wing, regardless if mounted directly on the struts, or further reward, can only be transferred through the tires, which are the only things connecting the body of mass to a another body that can apply the force back to the car (the road.) There might be 1 or 2 newtons lost to chassis flex but that would be so minimal relative to the overall downforce created. Not trying to fight or be rude or anything, but I think its pretty fair to say that if the strut mounted, high wings of the 60's were any kind of efficient, they'd have been adopted by engineers in other motorsport. The 50's and 60's were the first time teams started running wings and using downforce, and the way these forces interacted with the cars was mostly unknown; the understanding of these forces lead to development away from strut mounted, table top wings. Like I said, if you know something I don't, or if I'm misunderstanding anything, let me know. I'm here to learn.

    That crash at 32:12 is almost identical in nature to the crashes that killed Piers Courage and Roger Williamson. They both went off at Tunnel Oost. The difference between them was that Courage went up the embankment like you did, whereas by 1973 when Williamson died they had installed Armco along the track which catapulted him back across the track on his lid, leading to his death in the ensuing fire. RIP to them both. It's so easy to die in these old cars. I thought you drove great!

    That's quite the little mod to toy around with.
    Yeah, you were running up to 10 mph faster through some of that stuff around the back of the circuit on those couple laps when you crashed, which clearly shows there's more pace in it than the 1 min, 17.8 sec you finished.
    It would definitely be great to have more engine options.
    The time improvement is also impressive due to this being a shorter circuit, so the percentage pickup is better here than if you gained 3.2 seconds at a longer track.

    I know this is about aero..but I have always wondered…especially when talking about unsprung weight at the wheels…brakes are a significant amount of weight that could be better distributed in other areas…so, why not have a braking system that attaches on the drive axles..and more towards the diff. 🤔 Changing rotors would be a pain in the ass…however, especially for racing, wouldn’t it be beneficial to take the massive weight at each corner and move it in towards the chassis 🤔

    Pretty interesting work, above all focusing on driving styles and high speed corners management. But I would like you to add one more rating, beyond lap times: driving pleasure and satisfaction... IMHO it's better with no wings at all or nothing more than what could help keeping contact with the ground on extremely fast bumpy tracks. Though, there's one thing I have to point ot about this mod: top speed is almost the same in all configurations... can't be!! I don't have rFactor 2, but just go in Assetto Corsa and compare the two 312 Ferraris ('67 and '75), or get back to the good old rFactor and compare the 1967 vs 1976 mods: before the eighties, trading speed for downforce had much greater impact!
