I met ATB here in Fresno, Ca on their first US Tour with VOM and became really good friends with Justin. I always got them places to sleep in Cali so they could save money on tour and we had some really amazing times together. He showed me "Bulb" before they became "Periphery" at a BBQ we had at my house. He showed me how to play some of their songs on his guitar and even asked me to be their vocalist when Grant was booted but i was too scared lol. He was such a musicians musician and could talk music forever, he was also funny as hell when we got wasted lol. I'll forever miss that guy and i still think of him often. To think i made a best friend with someone who was in one of my All Time Favorite Bands from across the country......I'm honored to have met him......R.I.P Juice 😢
I was at the Summer Slaughter show at Skyway Theater after all this went down. The band members walked on stage to deliver a message that they would continue making music to honor his legacy and it was an incredibly emotional experience. They received a long ovation as they stood side by side holding hands and bowed to the crowd. Not a dry eye in the place
I almost found him. Went fishing with my wife that night. Unknowingly parked behind his car and everything. Came to a T in the trail. Left went to the bridge, right, to the ravine. 9 times out of 10, i went left to go fish the bridge hole. Had a very odd feeling come over me at the T and chose to go fish the low ravine hole that night. Cops all over the river that night, couldn't figure out why. His soul turned me right that night. He wasn't ready to be found. Rest peace Justin. We miss you and your riffs dearly.

Super timely!! I have been a fan of this band since 2007, I even have the original lineups signature on a poster! I have been thinking about these guys a lot recently as I go back and listen to that first version of Rareform all the time!
Yes, this haunts me for years as I followed the entire process of the incident only to find him dead, I also think it’s weird that the band doesn’t seem too sad and avoids talking about it and just moving forward so quick, like when The Rev of A7X died they looked really heartbroken and took years to get it back together, I’m still a fan of ATB it’s just the whole thing went away so quick and people just forget about it, also another weird case is Oli from All That Remains, why did they just died without any clear explanation? It just makes it hit that little bit harder. Rest in peace, Justin.
Also wanted to point out that you said Dan Carles drumming was standard for the genre…I disagree… while it may seem so, his kick drum game is like the musical equivalent to having a degree in physics IMO. His ability to play polyrhythms flawlessly and make it sound simple is mind boggling. Some of those kick patterns like in Pennyweight and A wolf amongst ravens while keeping a steady beat with the hands is absolute insanity.

Man this still hurts. I got to chill with Justin every time he came through the central valley. From the time where grant was in the band back to when they played at tattoo shops. He was a very easy person to talk to and was very inspiring. Most down to earth person I have ever met in music. Never would have thought he would do this but you never do. Rest in Power. 🟢🐊
Hey man. Love your content. Some of the best new stuff relating to heavy music I've seen for a while. Keep it comin and I reckon you'll blow over the next year
Whether he gets the credit for it or not, Justin is one of the pioneers of Djent and his influence has reached people who probably don’t even have an idea who helped originate the style they play. RIP Justin Lowe
RIP JUSTIN one of my friends, also named Justin, who is also gone now, used to always talk about After the Burial and seeing stuff like this really hits lol
Dude the breakdown in Drifts is insane. I remember vividly the first time I listened to it, I was at the gym doing chest and shit kicked in and I was giggling alone like a weirdo because I didn’t know how to react to the adrenaline rush lol Rareform is one of the greatest deathcore/metalcore records ever period.
You talk about a lot of the bands that I grew up listening to and were a big deal to me in high school. Keep up the good work boss, you’re almost at 1k subs now and can’t wait to see the growth from there 💯
Met Justin a couple times back in the day in the MN metal scene. About a year before all this unfolded, ATB Was playing in Duluth and Justin accidentally left his guitars at home. His folks drove them up and I gave him a ride to meet them. He was so gracious, and thankful. Soft spoken humble guy. I was just stoked to talk metal and chill with someone part of a band I truly looked up to since my early teen years. It was so sad to see how everything went down, and I immediately felt so much sadness for his parents who were just as kind as he was. RIP Justin you’re very much so missed to this day
ATB are such a great band! I got into them during the pandemic and i really their unique blend of melodic thrash, groove and djent. I was surprised to learn that Justin is exactly 2 years older than me. Such a tragic loss.
Justin and I grew up together. He was practicing guitar every minute he could. Went our separate ways after high school only to reunite after he made it big with ATB when he got into night photography. We'd shoot every chance we could when he was back home. Mental health was always a struggle for him and I'm sure being in a successful band didn't help. It was tragic finding out that he went missing knowing what the outcome would be, but he's not struggling anymore and that means something.
Met Trent and Justin when they toured with BoO and ASP way back in 09. Those boys loved talking guitar and met my “nerdiness” with open arms. Justin was such a unique charismatic Individual. His songwriting made such an impact on the scene, and it was too short lived. R.I.P Justin. Shred with them angels bud❤
I saw that tour in San Antonio. Tosin Abasi was filling in for one of All Shall Perish’s guitar players if I recall correctly. The overall metalcore/deathcore scene was so good back then! It felt like there were killer shows several times a week!
Great vid. Definitely a shame to have lost him so early. I still show ATB to people I meet who are getting into metal. They're a cornerstone for me. And my friends and I still debate over who had the better song outros, ATB or VOM lol. Thanks for all the great coverage.
Do justin a favor and listen to his final demo reel, theres riffs in it that got used on dig deep as well as some pretty cool trance tracks he had worked on. Theres an alternate unfinished version of wolves amongst ravens as well
That video of Justin demoing his 9-string on Neo Seoul is fucking haunting... You can see it in his eyes that he was struggling. Absolutely heartbreaking from a guitar monster. RIP Brother ❤
I experienced these events unfold in real time as well. I had just become a new fan of After the Burial in May 2015. I remember that day, July 22nd, opening Instagram and seeing my feed flooded with posts - “RIP Justin Lowe”. I just uttered out loud, “No…” It all happened so fast.. I feared he would eventually end up dead. 😞 There are similar situations still happening with others in the metal community, like Michael Keene of The Faceless and Al Mu’min of The Haarp Machine (has anyone seen his UA-cam videos lately? Shit is disturbing.) They need to be helped man, otherwise I fear they’ll end up like Justin.. Rest easy, Justin.
Lived in Minneapolis from 2003-2023. Came across After the Burial in 2005 and listened to the three songs posted on their MySpace obsessively. Finally got to see them live at The Triple Rock Social Club sometime early 2006 opening for Ion Dissonance and With Dead Hands Rising. I lose track of how many times I saw them live but I remember being at the farewell show at the T-Rock for the original vocalist Nick. Awesome time and bought a white double-grenade shirt that night designed by Nick that I still have to this day. I would occasionally see Lee around town and had a drink with him at CC Club a few times. I recall seeing them at Saint Cloud State University and at The Lab in St. Paul with Grant on vocals. Those first two albums are epic. To be honest, In Dreams never clicked for me, aside from a few tracks. This was around the time I was getting into more extreme metal so kind of dropped off at that point. In 2013 at the Pizza Luce Block Party in downtown Minneapolis I had the entire group sign my 2006 grenade shirt, including Justin. I have it to this day. Though I’m not much of a fan anymore, I still have caught them a number of times over the years; Summer Slaughter at the Cabooze, Warped Tour and playing Rareform in full with the Acacia Strain. They always bring it live. RIP Justin and cheers to the best metal band to ever come out of my beloved Minnesota.
I can assure you, as a friend of Sikth, they were playing djet styles and such from the early early 2000's as I was going to their gigs at the watford Rugby club on their home tuff way way back in the day.
25:48 That tone was a necessity by design. They tuned to C on their 8 strings in the same octave as the bass. So in order to have any clarity with such low notes they had to basically cut all the low end and compensated for that by having the bass fill that in. The mix is kinda iffy, but the tones work and I don't think they could have pulled it off any other way really.
I'm happy I was able to see them live in Norway in 2012. It's really sad Justin Lowe was depressed passed. It made me really upset when some people claimed it was a conspiracy. I actually never really thought about Djent being a way to play guitar instead of being a genre. Edit: I realize now that I might have mixed up what I mentioned earlier with what Justin mentioned about his friend's death being fake. It certainly looks like he had some mental illness. It's really sad to see someone go this way. To be fair, almost this situation he imagined happened to the vocalist of Thy Art is Murder recently. The latest years I've been learning a lot about mental illness since I myself probably have ADHD and possibly bi-polar. When I learned that people with schizophrenia and alike. It was pretty scary to learn that many of the symptoms actually can be that they suspect someone is trying to poison them and change the medication. So if someone actually would like to have him killed doing just that would probably not be considered a possibility.
My only exchange with him was when I helped him load some gear at a show and he let me chat him up about music. I remember he gave me a skeptical look, handed me a bass and told me “hold this like your LIFE depens on it” 😂 RIP Justin. You were the man.
I seen these legends twice live last time was in 2015 a couple months before Justin passed away. I played with quite a bit of bands of that era back in 2010s 🎸
There is a reason why Reflections is rereleasing all their old material lol, the mixes don't stand the test of time. Then again metal in itself as a genre dates itself. Folks who have been listeners for years, can damn near tell you what year a band is from by what they are doing, and the mix.
Has anyone here considered that he was setup? I mean....he died. Y'all need to look into gangstalking and just take a step back and try to be rational here. Incredibly intelligent talented dude, then just all the sudden goes off the deep end and is found dead after claiming to be setup? I can't be the only one who has been around the block, knows what kind of evil is out there, and believes his story.
Truthfully, gangstalking is something I know very little about and didn’t take into consideration while making this video. It may be plausible as the circumstances surrounding his death were so strange and sudden. However through my research I haven’t found evidence to support that
How can we when there's no actual evidence? Sometimes people do just snap, it makes no difference how talented or intelligent you are. There's 100 different things that can cause this much more likely than the conspiracy theories.
"look into gangstalking" the thing that most people who 'experience' it are just mentally ill? Also since when did being mentally troubled mean you aren't intelligent?
My ex was absolutely convinced she was being gangstalked. If you spoke to her, she'd convince you. She was incredibly believable. The thing is, she was actually psychotic from doing speed, but you'd never guess it because she seemed to be coherent until you delved a little deeper.
AtB came to Moscow last time in 2014, that day also Hacktivist, Heart of a Coward and The Algorithm performed, it was damn cool! Everyone had time to talk to all the participants after the performance, no one left the hall immediately, photo sessions, autographs and pleasant communication. From Justin I have his personalized red pick, a joint photo and autographs from all the guys
I live in MN and grew up in Minneapolis the first 9 years of my life before moving to Brooklyn Park. White Bear Lake is about 15 minutes from Brooklyn Park, and I remember seeing ATB at a small club out that way before they became big back in 2006 I wanna say, and it's Vadnais Heights (Vad-nes) also I always compared after the burial and as blood runs black because they always reminded me of each other.
I saw them when they were touring on forging a future self. They were the opener. I was blown away, I immediately went and met them at the merch table. They kept trying to get me to call one of their members shrek that was away talking to someone else but I didn't do it. I'm not sure the origin of the inside joke but I've always been curious.
It’s this man and his partner Trent who made me appreciate what you can actually do with an extended range guitar. I was following the story from the day he quit the band and disappeared. I’d already had a sinking feeling about what he’d done but I didn’t want to believe it. What I think happened is his friend’s suicide broke him and he happened to see someone that looked like him and it set off a huge fire in his brain about how to explain it and spiraled from “my friends death was faked” to “everyone in my life was in on this and are trying to ruin me” and kept blaming all his bad experiences in life on this. He couldn’t handle this and jumped off that bridge. They recorded Wolves Within in GarageBand, that’s why it sounds like it’s recorded on a phone.
What a fantastic video. I have been listening to ATB since the original rare form. A few sounds where dlc for rockband 2 and I was hooked. I like both versions for different reasons. it's reminds me of vanilla cake and chocolate cake. Both are cake and both are awesome for different reasons.

I honestly wasn't expecting to cry at all today.
Thank you for the work you did justin🥹thank you for everything 🥹 this one still hits too hard. 😭🥺
That summer slaighter tour was the first time I ever got to see them and man that whole show was amazing.
Imma follow this channel for the grace this was talked about with, and presented. Thank you brok🥹🥺🙏
Hey man. Love your content. Some of the best new stuff relating to heavy music I've seen for a while. Keep it comin and I reckon you'll blow over the next year
Well done my man this has always been a super interesting topic with him I remember when it all happened glad you made a good video of it
Thanks for the balanced exploration here man. Just one of the best bands in the game!
Rip Justin 💚
This video is really respectful and well put together by the way!
Dude...great video. You should do more on the golden era of Sumerian bands!
Whether he gets the credit for it or not, Justin is one of the pioneers of Djent and his influence has reached people who probably don’t even have an idea who helped originate the style they play. RIP Justin Lowe
I didn’t know his story and I appreciate you doing your best to tell it from your view 🖤🤘🏻
Great video. Brought back a lot of old memories
You talk about a lot of the bands that I grew up listening to and were a big deal to me in high school. Keep up the good work boss, you’re almost at 1k subs now and can’t wait to see the growth from there 💯
Same here. They were such a key influence for me so seeing Justin decline was just such a shame. I appreciate the support man
Thank you for making this! Every band listed was a huge part of my life. You are right that time was huge for the metal sub genre! Well very done!
Loved this band and Lowe’s playing …such a tragedy. Rest easy bro, thanks for all your creative endeavors
I followed Justin on Facebook and watched all of this unfurl. I have since deleted my account . RIP Justin Lowe. Miss you dude.
We Love you, Justin, and we always will.
U got a good lil niche here my boy. Keep it going
Please keep making videos especially about "core" genres
Listened to these guys since their inception and was fortunate enough to get to see them at Warped 2012 in San Antonio.
RIP Justin 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
There are similar situations still happening with others in the metal community, like Michael Keene of The Faceless and Al Mu’min of The Haarp Machine (has anyone seen his UA-cam videos lately? Shit is disturbing.) They need to be helped man, otherwise I fear they’ll end up like Justin..
Rest easy, Justin.
i remember when this happened, such an awesome person, rest easy
It all makes sense to me now as to why I love their music. Justin started as a drummer, so he understood rhythm.
Your channel is dope man keep it up
Thank you so much for this dude.
Good video, just gave a sub. I actually forgot all about this. Also reminded me of the Upon a Burning Body publicity stunt.
What was the stunt that happened?
@@joelidirt the singer pretended to get kidnapped to hype a tour
@@extremetrollfaceto hype an album “The World Is My Enemy Now”
Maybe do a video on the tim lambesis hitman situation next dude, great video
It’s actually crazy that you say that
@GreyJ47 hoping to see it soon! Lol
Ahhh okay see that makes a lot of sense. Thank you for the explanation
I remember seeing them live a few times in ‘08 and ‘09; their live tone was always superb and they put on a helluva show.
This video really digs deep
Good content mate
I was at a lot of those shows at the triple rock in the footage. Absolutely the best times.
My only exchange with him was when I helped him load some gear at a show and he let me chat him up about music. I remember he gave me a skeptical look, handed me a bass and told me “hold this like your LIFE depens on it” 😂 RIP Justin. You were the man.
Such a beautiful soul, I miss him so much. Such a horrible situation, truly miss this man and the art he brought to the world.
Miss ya Justin, always good hangs when yall came thru Portland and stayed with us ❤🤘
Great video brother, Rip Justin, Station 4 forever.
Justin Lowe was responsible for some really sweet music. RIP
RIP Justin
I seen these legends twice live last time was in 2015 a couple months before Justin passed away. I played with quite a bit of bands of that era back in 2010s 🎸
The line ups are fucking insane, we don't have much amazing line ups any more.
For real! Doing research for this video I was amazed at the old tour lineups from back in the day. That era was something special
@@GreyJ47 I was like who with who then you showed the poster stating how real it was. I almost screamed for joy.
@@GreyJ47wheres the JL facebook post?
@@allworksnew I just put in in the description of the video. Metal Injection archived the post
Gangstalking isn't real. If you think you are being gangstalked you need to seek mental health help.
My ex was absolutely convinced she was being gangstalked. If you spoke to her, she'd convince you. She was incredibly believable. The thing is, she was actually psychotic from doing speed, but you'd never guess it because she seemed to be coherent until you delved a little deeper.
Nine summers and disconnect always bring the goosebumps.
Rock in peace, legend.
Rip Justin Lowe. Phenomenal guitarist of one of my favorite bands. Much respect 🤘
Bro excellent video. Liked and subbed.
I remember the last time I saw him. When they played the Machine Shop in Flint...We walked around in the mall across the street!
What a fantastic video. I have been listening to ATB since the original rare form. A few sounds where dlc for rockband 2 and I was hooked. I like both versions for different reasons. it's reminds me of vanilla cake and chocolate cake. Both are cake and both are awesome for different reasons.
To this day, one of, if not, the best live band ever
I played with them in Rockford IL 2 different times. 2007 and 2008. He was kind of quiet but was a very nice guy. Very sad.
I saw these guys supporting Fear Factory. Didnt know any of this happened, really sad. Hope he's at peace.
