I love your videos concerning NHL/hockey history. I’m a relatively new hockey fan, although I did try to follow it as a kid in the 1950s. In the 60s when it first showed up on my TV, I was really put off by all the fighting and paid little attention to hockey until about 5 years ago. So, hearing about the good things that I missed is really good for me.
Shannon I’ve been watching you since 2016 I swear to god if you jinx the panthers now I’ll fucking find you and buy you a cheeseburger or somethin idk you seem like a cool dude

I was a huge Islander fan back in the 70s and 80s and still remember “Mr. May” Billy Smith. Come the playoffs he was a brick wall in net. The 4 in a row Stanley Cup wins were amazing.
Good one. I had theories before I read the board. Was surprised that Boston only lost twice in the final to Montreal. Growing up, it seemed like more. BOOM!!
As a Buffalo Sabres fan from Cleveland, Ohio (with an honorary PhD in sports curses), I 1,000% agree with you about the Sabres being jinxed. Still, I am hoping Lindy Ruff 2.0 can take us all the way!
Sometimes it seems like Shannon says "How can I make a video and talk about the 1981 North Stars?" Sems like Cup winners lose in a future Final more than a Finalist gets back to win it.
These is the worst announcing ever for a cup final. I have to watch with the sound off. They are never announcing, always talking about something unnecessary
So any team losing a Cup Final really does seem to take time for them to recover from, at least enough for them to run it back Teams who lost the Cup Final, then won it the following season: • the 1983 / 84 Oilers • the 2008 / 09 Penguins • the 2023 / _(24)_ Panthers Teams who lost consecutive Cup Finals: • the 1968 / 69 / 70 Blues • the 1977 / 78 Bruins Both of these lists are weirdly shorter than I thought they’d be lol
Should be noted that this is 1967-68 onward because if Hockey Guy did every NHL season, his white board would be the size of a wall and the Leafs wouldn’t be with the Kraken, Jets(2.0), Utah Hockey Club(name TBD), Wild, & Blue Jackets among teams yet to make a Cup Final appearance
With how often this comes up, I thought there might be something to it, but... looking at the numbers, it honestly looks like the opposite is true. Like following a cup win, the teams are more likely to make another run for the finals the following year, and lose.
@THG, do you still have the videos of your reviews of the Stanley Cup series' you watched? Being a lifelong fan of the Blues, but only a recent fan of yours, I'd love to see the review of the Blues/Bruins series.
Mellanby scored a hat trick with the same stick he killed a rat with in the dressing room before the game, which; because of superstition, started the tradition of throwing rats on the ice and the term "Rat Trick" was coined.
Tough look for a Bruins fan. Just an insane run of dominant teams they ran into. Late 70's Habs, early 80's Islanders, mid-late 80's Oilers, and then the early 90's Penguins. Timing is everything they say.
Thank you for single-handedly extending the 2024 season.. Just a few hours ago Florida had all but buttoned it up. After your video, they wind up benching Bobrovsky?! I would say you can't write this stuff but we all know it's scripted. /s I'm dyin'. Keep up the great videos!

We were last in November. Counted out against Dallas and Vancouver. Called weak, soft, lucky and here we are. Cup finals. Whatever happens this is an amazing season
This. If you'd told me in November we'd make the finals, I'd have died laughing. Probably the 3rd straight year we get knocked out by the eventual champions.
Interesting fact about the Capitals 1998 cup final loss. Washington was the #4 seed that year. In the first round, the top three seeds all lost. This left the Caps as the top seed remaining for the next 2 rounds. So it wasn't too surprising that the Red Wings swept them in the Final
yooo i was just talking about how Gretzky and Crosby lost their first finals in 83 and 08 and then both went back and won in 84 and 09. does mcdavid follow the pattern?
I was 10 years old the last Flyers Cup. We all thought they would be a dynasty but it wasn't meant to be. I remember the MAB Paints bumper stickers that said "Hat Trick in '76". They even went to the semi-finals in 1977 & 78 and back to the finals in 1980. Not So Fun Fact for we Flyers fans, we have the distinction of kicking off 2 consecutive dynasties. The 76-79 Canadiens and the 1980-83 Islanders. We were also victim #2 & #3 for the Oilers. Speaking of which, the 1987 finals were the most painful for me. Coming back from 3-1 to tie the series in one of the greatest games I've ever seen only to fall in game 7. 1997 sucked as well as we were so dominating in the playoffs and just didn't show up in the finals. Now I'm not so sure I'll see another Cup win again.
Shannon, since you’re on the topic of historic SC Finals, do a review of St. Louis Blues in the ‘68-‘70 Cup Finals scores and opponents. The Blues put up a valiant effort vs those original 6 teams that were stacked with HOF players. Anybody looking at those teams would have much greater appreciation for the task the Blues had to face. Unbelievable.
These are great chats to have but I think making the finals and winning presidents trophies just show that you have a great team that year. The problem is that there are probably 8 great teams that make the playoffs each year so statistically the odds of winning are still low.
Stolarz in net, good for him. 👍 Kind of expected this. Florida overcame Kulikov’s dumb mistake last night, but another bad mistake tonight has led to a snowball effect. At least Oilers’ fans will go home happy; will Florida’s on Tuesday?
I am trying to decide who is going to crush my hopes and dreams again next time Philly makes it to the finals. Edmonton, Montreal, Islanders, Chicago and Detroit had the dynasties that beat Philly. It will be a while before Philly is even competitive outside of the first round. But I think it's reasonable to think they've learned how to navigate the post cap world and start stringing better seasons together again.
Maybe a better indicator would be GM. If there is a GM who puts together teams that get really close without winning the cup. Maybe they know how to put together a competitive team, but there is always something missing. And maybe there's a GM out there that puts together a team that wins the cup, they fall off, they sign somewhere else, win again, and the process repeats.
Watching this video after the Fla vs Edm game 4 review. Florida wins at home in game 5 and send Edmonton back home, or this will see a game 7 most likely. But hey, it’s hockey, so anything can happen. From board bounces, unlucky deflections, goalies caught out of the net and more. :-)
From the Oilers' POV, it's important to keep in mind that all the key pieces of the roster are already signed for next year, and none of the players whose contracts are up who they should be looking to keep are looking for big raises. On top of this, a lot of the good, young players have taken big strides this year (Bouchard, Skinner, Broberg, Holloway), and should by all rights be even better and more consistent next year. This was just Florida's year, but I don't see any reason why Oilers can't be the Panthers of 2025.
The league is treating the Utah team is as a new franchise in terms of records and history. It's going to be weird having to explain that in the future on videos like this. Even weirder if AZ comes back
As an Oilers fan, I have to ask that you please do NOT place the Oilers magnet next to an Islanders magnet! It could cause a 'fuss'. Some of us still get PTSD at hearing the name "William Smith" or a host of other names....
Florida’s defense looks like the Maginot Line vs. a hailstorm of Panzers tonight. One bad pinch and an SHG later, Edmonton’s taken this one over. They lose, they’ll really have no-one to blame but themselves.
That's a guarantee that a giant comet will crash into the earth, immediately after. Or if the Bills win a SB, world ending sh!t will follow the next day. 👍

While making the finals doesn't necessarily mean winning, or returning to win in the next year, from what I can see of this list, making consecutive finals does seem to indicate winning at least one Stanley Cup.
Curious how Expansion Team Blue fans were feeling about losing 3 straight cup finals. Are you just happy to be there because you don't have to play in the original 6 division so you kind of knew you were probably getting smoked? Or is it like the Bills misery of 4 straight super bowl losses?
If Florida wins a cup it only left Ottawa and Buffalo without a title in the Atlantic Division so 6/8 having won the SC. Metro is 7/8, only Columbus never won Central : 4/8 Pacific : 5/8
Panthers have been a sh,*t show tonight. The inconsistent refs are just one part of it. 1st Period that knee to knee should have been a 5 minute major. Panthers are getting caught flatfooted and missing assignments. Go Panthers. Finish them off in Game #5.
It is extremely hard to believe that the LEAFS have never even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in their century's old storied franchise!!! I never woulda guessed this is a million years!!!
(after game 4): I'm starting to think that Edmonton could still pull this off. They seem to have gotten Goalie Bob out of their heads, and have been playing much better since midway through game 3. As was noted during the Game 4 broadcast, the last time prior to this series that Edmonton lost three games in a row, those losses were immediately followed by 16 straight wins, four times what they would need now. Yes, coming back from down 3-0 to win in the Finals hasn't been done since 1942, but winning a potential elimination Finals game by seven goals hadn't been done in over a century, and Edmonton has just done that already.
It would be awesome if you made a video of players who won the Conn Smythe without winning the cup. Not many but would be interesting to hear

In the AFL in Australia, there's a saying.
To win a premiership you have to loose one.

its only happened eight times ever

Panthers deserve to win the Stanley Cup . Cheering for the Oil but the effort of Florida is rather remarkable .
@@Chris-qo4rt Take care !
If Florida wins a cup it only left Ottawa and Buffalo without a title in the Atlantic Division so 6/8 having won the SC.
Metro is 7/8, only Columbus never won
Central : 4/8
Pacific : 5/8
The Wings made the finals in '63, '64 and 66'.
so no one lost in the final, and won the cup the following year?… Panthers will be first🤷🏻♂️
Oilers dd it, but it is rare.
@@TheHockeyGuy ohhhh yes 👏🏼
@@Realistic316 Pittsburgh did it as well in 2009
@@user-ji3il6ce2o wow, maybe i should’ve thought this through a bit more 😆
Oilers lost in 1983 and then won in 1984. The Pens also did it in 2008 and 2009 but they had a couple of Cups prior to that.
Chicago didn't make the Cup Finals before winning in 2010 but they did go to the West Finals in 09. I think they learned from that.
Going up against that Detroit team was a good learning lesson for guys like Toews and Kane.
1992 Blackhawks were in the Stanley Cup Final vs Penguins 4 game sweep for Pittsburgh 1992 is on the board for Chicago
@@michaelleroy9281 I meant the Toews and Kane team not the franchise. I don't think 1992 was a learning experience for the 2010 Blackhawks.
Better not to jinx these Finals...
Jinxes aren't a thing. If I could influence the outcome of games, teams I root for would win.
@@TheHockeyGuy Fair enough, it's just as a Panthers fan and game being 8-1 as I type this, timing is just bad🥴
@@TheHockeyGuy But keep up your excellent work❤️
@@TheHockeyGuy
I think jinxes only work when you don't have a dog in the fight.
I hope the current season ends tonight so the next season can begin.
Not quite how that works, friend..
Summer comes first , then next season with the new Utah Hockey 🏒 Club
Panthers have been a sh,*t show tonight. The inconsistent refs are just one part of it. 1st Period that knee to knee should have been a 5 minute major. Panthers are getting caught flatfooted and missing assignments. Go Panthers. Finish them off in Game #5.
That's not a five minute major. There was zero intent.
It's cyclical.
It is extremely hard to believe that the LEAFS have never even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in their century's old storied franchise!!! I never woulda guessed this is a million years!!!
Expansion era, dingus.
Oilers ain’t making it back to the Final any time soon.
