That is Roger's face on the drum. Fans complained that because Roger was always stuck in the back behind the drums no one could see him. So he had his face painted on the bass drum. Queen fans have wondered about the meaning behind this particular song. As it turns out, it’s not nearly as sordid as some people might think. Brian wrote the guitar riff for the song in the first place when, he was staying at his place in Tenerife, preparing for his Ph.D. dissertation. Late one night, he was lying in bed reviewing the details of one of his assignments when a particular guitar riff suddenly popped into his head. He immediately got up and started playing it. Before he knew it, he had been playing that same riff for hours. He had the entire piece down as far as playing the guitar went, but he couldn’t come up with any words except for just a few- tie your mother down. He thought it was absurd, but those words popped into his head. It wasn’t that he had tried to force anything, it just happened. When he got back with the band, he started telling Freddie about this magnificent guitar riff he had thought of. He also told him that he couldn’t come up with any words except for “tie your mother down. Brian says that he told Freddie that there was no way we could possibly use those words in a song because it was just wrong for us to do so. But he claims that Freddie responded with, “Yes we can,” and then proceeded to do exactly that. Before he knew it, the song was finished, lyrics and all and he was performing it live on stage. rife. ( I suspect Brian left steps out of the story regarding how it was recorded.) "Tie Your Mother Down" was included on the album "A Day At The Races" and the second single released from the 1976 album. The song peaked at 31 on the UK singles chart. The inspiration for the song is a story of a boy who desperately wants to date this girl and get to know her better, yet his every move is thwarted by the girl’s parents. This is where the lyrics, tie your mother down, came from. It was all about a girl who had an overbearing mother. The mother doesn’t approve of the boy. While the lyrics were never meant in a literal sense, it was more out of the frustration that virtually every young man feels when he starts dating the woman of his dreams, only to find out that her mother doesn’t approve and won’t allow her daughter to have anything to do with him. The desire to tie the mother down, or get her out of the way temporarily, is where this song stems from.
Queen comes to ENTERTAIN. Freddie knows all the musical riffs AND has the moves to accentuate all of them, whether it's drumming or guitars! Freddie is a totally effective 'one man' chorus line . . . all over that stage . . . keeping the fantastic music in our faces!!!! Love watching you two totally appreciate QUEEN.
You REALLY need to read the lyrics... they are going to make your eyebrows waggle! Roger calls Brian a "fully grown butterfly" in that shirt he has on. I always laugh. Brian had the phrase "Tie Your Mother Down" running through his head and he went to Freddie and said, "I have this line in my head, but there's no way we can use it." Freddie said, "Yes we can!" and so they did! Great song for sure.
OMG!! Last night, I saw Queen + Adam in Los Angeles!! 🤩🥳FABULOUS! Brian, Roger, & Adam did an acoustic version of Tie Your Mother Down first, then that riff! 😜 In my top 10!! Me & my granddaughter screamed, sang, shouted, & danced, with absolute glee!! 😁😁 When Brian & Roger left the stage my granddaughter said, “Can we go talk to them now?” 🥰🥰
I’m sure some people have already recommended it, but their song “Now I’m Here”- live at Hammersmith Odeon 1979 is probably my favorite live version of it. Super exhilarating performance with a great vocal solo by Freddie towards the end that just brings this version to another level!
Did Coach and Mrs.Coach lead sheltered lives?😂.......did some research about “Tie your Mother down”....and discovered that it was a firm favourite on U.S. FM Rock Radio...just saying!🤩
Yes, we did. Both sets of parents were very religious and did not like us listening to rock at all. However, the radio station in our area that played rock didn't play it that I ever heard. And we'd never have gone out of our way to find a Queen song back then. LOL
Did they say he uses an old British 6pence silver coin for a plectrum. When the sixpence went out of circulation Brian has his own sixpence shaped disc made.
Coach & Mrs Coach, something for you to enjoy once you're done with videos in the Live At Montreal concert. Years afterwards, it was re-mastered, (maybe 2011?), and re-released with a very cool "commentary" on the dvd. As you watch that video version, Brian & Roger go through the entire show, telling about the filming, production, singing. It's so funny! Brian is almost always serious "and here is the lighting" and Roger is joking & sassy through it all. Enjoyable.
Hey Coach and Mrs. Coach! The IMAX showing of this Montreal concert was extended so it will be showing again this weekend. You really should see it if it's available near you. It was absolutely amazing.
The only reason we heard this stuff in the day was that there were fm stations that played entire albums. They weren’t widely played until We will Rock You and We Are the Champions on regular stations. This was a great concert to see. Their stage presence was incredible. I have been to a lot of concerts, but this one was special. And the only time I ever saw my favourite band play live. I still listen to the albums.
So true especially Zepplin! They realized they could make more money by making folks buy the whole album. I envy that you got to see them. That must have rocked!
Going to the IMAX cinema tomorrow with my wife to see the whole Montreal concert in its full glory. It’s on all around the world for the next 4 days only
I love this song, written by Brian. Thank you for your reactions. The face is a drawing of Roger's face. Freddie said that the people needed a way to see Roger since he was usually hidden behind his huge kit so either Roger or the band/management had the picture done and put on Roger's drum. When that picture is not there, the Queen Logo is so perhaps you haven't seen many shows where this is what appears there.
They decided what and when songs were released, this is from the day at the races album , named after the marx brothers film as was the " a night at the opera " album because freddie loved watching the marx brothers films and he said he got most ideas from the films
Coach rocking out makes me realize how lucky Mrs. Coach is to have such a wonderful partner to share the moments with! Makes me wish I knew of some obscure Rock to suggest. Ah well, CoachCastTV don't need a guide.
This song was written by Brian many years before, when he was an astrophysics student. It was inspired to a degree by Brian's admiration for Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher. To me the riff also bears a strong resemblance to Black Sabbath's Hole In The Sky, but since that was released in 1975 and Tie Your Mother Down was released in 1976 , it's hard to say either song was inspired by the other!
Oh man this is a fun one. Remember it well. If I remember correctly, at this show, this was right after they did "Bohemian Rhapsody" midway through the show. This is from "A Day at the Races" came out in '76.
Great song. Slow it down some, "Love of my Life" Brian playing a 12 string guitar, absolutely beautiful. "Resurrection" by Brian May. Great review. Boomer Sooner.
Just saw Queen in Dallas last week. Brian and Roger hasn't lost a thing. They performed with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders on stage dancing to "Fat Bottom Girls". They both seem pleased with this!! The face on the drum is Roger's at Freddie's suggestion because he had to sit in the back.
Thank you, that’s Roger’s face...a nod to the fact that it was hard to see him behind the drums......Queen would not have been played a lot in the U.S.......and remember when I said that MTV were not inclined to play Queen?... their songs were played a lot in Europe ....also “take your little brother swimming with a brick”...what a great lyric..🤣...always makes me laugh🤩
It's a portrait of Roger drawn by Freddie... yes. way cool... genre?? They are their OWN genre... blessings. P.S. Thanks for yet another wonderful reaction...
On the album, if I remember correctly, is a song you need to play for the young lady sitting next to you. Take My Breath Away. Studio version with lyrics. IMO better than the live version. IF, you react to it remember, Freddie is the only one singing. I think your bride will truly enjoy it.
I love that you loved this performance. John's bass line was just as epic as all the other boys' contributions... and so much energy, it had my head bobbing like mad! This was the opening track from the album 'A day at the races' 1976. It was also released as a single, but I never remember hearing it on the radio either. I suspect that might be due to the... uh... rather dubious lyrics, which we didn't really hear clearly in this performance, except for that wonderful chorus.
This was so good! We're blown away. Just reacted to another by them that we don't think is a radio track either and it also blew us away. That one coming later in the week.
This song has always been one of my favourites, can't understand why it was more popular, I think it only reached number 30 odd in the uk charts when it was first released, not sure how it did in the US , I believe it was re released years later and did a bit better second time round. As a fellow rocker I knew you would appreciate it, have a look at now I'm here live at wembley 86, you will like that to. Yes the face on the drum is roger.
I'm older than you so I was an adult when Queen came out and I always loved them, but there was no MTV, etc so we didn't see them on TV much. Plus they just weren't as popular here in the US as they were in Europe etc. So you really had to listen for them. Of course they had hits here but for instance Bohemian Rapsody was #1 in England for 9 weeks but only made the top 10 here. By the way, when you listen to it, do the original version. it's the only way to really hear it. Note, it was really the first real music video made. Queen is more popular here now after the movie a few years ago. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. Not 100% factual but highly entertaining because the music is so great and a fantastic cast. Enjoy your videos.
Thanks very much. Appreciate it. And yes, I think the folks from the UK are surprised that people our age don't know much about Queen except the few radio hits, but that was the reality here, they were simply not that popular.
You need to watch the 1986 Live Wembley Stadium Concert....maybe post in 20 min sections....it will blow your minds. Oh, and the making of "One Vision" Documentary is good too.
Hi guys loving your reactions to my favorite band ever. There are so many suggestions because they are so freaking amazing. This band is truly amazing. Pick any song from their Wembley concert in 1986, that whole concert was amazing from beginning to end. “Now I’m Here” “Another Bites the Dust” “Kind of Magic” more for you Mr. Coach 😆you will not be disappointed but Queen never disappoints. Welcome to the Queen Army.
Thanks, Coachies! When I saw Queen in 1978, they opened with this.. and it was fantastic... such a Brian May song... always love your reactions... still hoping you get around to some of Brian's solo works...
freddie told roger to put his face on the drum so the fans could see his face at the live concerts starting with gigs following the release of the jazz album
I don't know how old you are, but this was released as a single in 1976. I don't know if it charted or not. The hottest disc jockey in Oklahoma use to play this at the beginning of his show every night. I've heard Freddie in interviews say they had huge arguments about which songs they were going to release. I would have loved to seen that!
haha so funny you react to both blackpink and queen, before i became a blink i was a huge queen fan (still am), i would recommend performance "white Queen hammersmith 75" its enchanting. Thanks for this reaction really enjoyed it ❤
@@CoachCastTV oh, my bad, didnt know. Instead, I can recommend "you take my breath away hyde park 76" thats a really good one where he shows off his voice. Also, Freddie Mercury had quite an interesting collab with Montserrat Caballe (opera singer) and they recorded an album together called Barcelona and i absolutely love every song its so refreshing and unusual.
I believe that the face on the drums really belongs to Roger Taylor, it seems that they had this idea because because he was so hidden behind the drums he almost disappeared at shows, there was no way for his face to appear. Please react to Who Wants To Live Forever live in Wembley 1986, I don't think you have checked out this song yet and you might like it, I love your reactions ❤
Another of my favorite Queen songs! These guys tear it up! It's such a cheeky song and so much fun. This is one of those songs that to me defines Queen. America dropped the ball with respect to Queen. The music industry machine, and I think this true with entertainment in general, is run by people who want us to hear and watch what they want and they utterly disrespect the artistry of the most talented artists AND the wants of the people who buy their music and movies. Corporate types are only concerned about the bottom lines ( the same tired corrupting influence in our country at every level) decide what will be and to heck with us. Queen was too often ignored by those who have the power to promote them on the air in America. Another reason is Queen as you pointed out was not monolithic in their music. They played in wildly wonderful and divergent styles making them their own. Our radio stations play by genre. The stations didn't play songs outside their genre. For example, Queen would never be played on Country stations though the song " '39" had a distinctly country/folk sound. "Love of My Life" a GORGEOUS ballad would never be played on the rock stations because it wasn't "Rock enough" for that, but it couldn't be played on easy listening stations because they were considered by them to be "rock" no matter that the track was mostly piano, Freddie's voice, and some very light non-rockish guitar work by Brian, hardly a "rock song" as it were. I actually had this battle with radio stations back when I used to request Queen songs to be played. Also radio stations don't get the whole album to play, they get singles which are determined by record execs for release by their company rather than what the artists wanted. Sometimes they were in agreement but often the bands had very little say so on what was released for radio. Record execs don't know anything. I say let the bands and the audiences decide what should be played. Release the whole albums and we, fans of music, will tell you what we like and what the hits SHOULD be!!! That's my fantasy world.
Very well said. A lot of people have asked how we could not know more Queen but I think most of those did not grow up in America, where, as you said, they are not nearly as popular as other bands.
Freddie was bullied in school......he took up boxing....he won the school boxing championship (of course he did)....there is a pic of him in his school uniform with the huge silver trophy that he won🤩
The song they had just finished playing in the beggining of this video was Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm surprised you haven't come across it yet. You listened it at live Aid but that was just 1/4 of the song. Most people consider it Queen's best song (though I disagree with that).
Yep, the young people call this a "banger". I saw them five times and they opened with this on the Day at the Races tour-Freddie came out in a white boilersuit and stripped off to red and white shorts and red suspenders. Ooh la la! (The record company traditionally picked the single-with marginal input from the band. Except in Queen's case. See "Bohemian Rhapsody" for further details.) This is one of Brian's that Freddie def needed to sing. And yeah, it did get on the radio. Still does.
Another Sir Brian May song Yes Roger face on his drum, he swapped things around, the Queen logo designed by Fred, only just watched the video, the title of your reaction came up in my feed so said who had written the song by just seeing the title
One of my all time faves and YEAH you shoulda done the original 1976 studio official video (live footage from '77), but hey this was a great show!.... BUT you can hear the vocals better, on the studio version... great lyrics LOL... a young man's complaint to his girlfriend about her overbearing family.... Tie your mother down, take your brother swimming with a brick, now thats alright!!!... Oh and this song was all over the radio back in the '70s!
Brilliant rocking song! I know Coach really likes rock - react to "Now I'm Here" live at Wembley 1986 - the energy level is amazing! That version of Tie Your Mother Down rocks (better than Montreal IMO)
This one was a single but it failed to be successful at the time because it unfortunately coincided with the punk movement taking off. Had they released it a few months earlier or a few months later, people would've probably been far more aware of it. Talk about the butterfly effect!
Queen’s very seldom played songs are way better than most of their main stream songs (and those songs are good). Try Hammer to Fall, Stone Cold Crazy, Seven Seas of Rhye, Let Me Live and It’s Late. All fantastic songs.
Looks like it was released when we were too young to be doing much radio listening as we were still in single digits age-wise. That would explain why we never heard it.
I knew this is one you all would like! It was played on radio but not like the staples. It is a shame that other song that are just as good did not get radio time . Another great one that did not get played is "It's Late". Another great that got overshadowed by the well known that are on the same album. I think the only one out there is the official lyric video, so no live. Also "One Vision" extended version is worth a check into.
Reactors should always listen to the original studio versions of songs. Songs are for the ears, not the eyes. Forget about videos, just listen to the songs the way the artists intended them to be listened to.
No it’s not, it’s 2 completely different images. The image on his bass drum was drawn by Freddie, the image on strange frontier is actually from photo sessions for the works album
In my youth I enjoyed Queen, SlipKnot, Metallica ... but at this point I have moved on. I wouldn't listen to Queen today anymore than I would want to grow my hair as long as I did back in the day. The fashion and aura, sounds, and vocals are just too dated and worn for me. There are too many new artists to see and hear in today's music scene for me to have any time for this.
@@CoachCastTV truly amazed at the number of "Likes" you get for this genre but I guess it partially explains why you do it. You know your audience, but be careful not to alienate the differences in who you are and upset the apple cart LOL. Seems too diverse to me to be congruent.
@@TrumanLakeTriton Yeah, we're trying to open our minds to new groups, and genres, and in the case of K-pop, new industries. We don't want to be the "K-pop reaction channel" or "classic rock reaction channel", etc.
This is worst Tie your Mother down from any Live show, Wembley shows are better, Live at the bowl Budepest, and Hammersmith 1979 , The Montreal show everyone likes so much is subpar to the others, even Somebody to love isbn better than at the bowl. Everyone is concentrated at Freddie of course, without his Bandmates who let him rule the stage and back down for the greater good , he is only wolf without Teeth, look at his solo stuff, apart from Barcelona Album every song is Bullshit

Thanks so much!
If I had to guess why this song never made it on the radio? I'd say it's because it's called "Tie your mother down." But I'm just guessing 😅
LOL...could be.
I knew Coach would like this one! Great reaction! They do a medley with this in the ‘86 Wembley concert. Such a great rockin song!
Rock on!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks, Coachies! When I saw Queen in 1978, they opened with this.. and it was fantastic... such a Brian May song... always love your reactions... still hoping you get around to some of Brian's solo works...
Glad you enjoyed it
QUEEN -Son and daughter LIVE 1974
Very few bands will ever match Queens brilliance.
Agreed.
Never heard this song before. Thank you.
freddie told roger to put his face on the drum so the fans could see his face at the live concerts starting with gigs following the release of the jazz album
Awesome reactions Mr&Mrs coach Thank you for the content always look forward to your vids a massive thumbs up from across the pond hear in the UK😃👍
Thank you so much 😁
Queen picked the singles. Those were the ones you hear on the radio
Good reaction.... ❤
Queens best song is need your lovin tonight
I don't know how old you are, but this was released as a single in 1976. I don't know if it charted or not. The hottest disc jockey in Oklahoma use to play this at the beginning of his show every night. I've heard Freddie in interviews say they had huge arguments about which songs they were going to release. I would have loved to seen that!
Interesting! And that would explain it, as we were still in single digits age-wise when this came out.
@@CoachCastTV I had just started high during the Bicentennial in 76. What a great year for music.
haha so funny you react to both blackpink and queen, before i became a blink i was a huge queen fan (still am), i would recommend performance "white Queen hammersmith 75" its enchanting. Thanks for this reaction really enjoyed it ❤
Thanks! That one is actually on our channel now. Enjoy!
@@radasvidea5909 No worries. Thanks for the suggestions and happy to chat with you! Hope to see you around the channel!
Thanks so much!
For example, Queen would never be played on Country stations though the song
" '39" had a distinctly country/folk sound.
Please check out Too Much Love Will Kill You with Freddie singing. Its SO much more powerful! Love Brian, but Freddie can make you FEEL a song.
Keep em coming coach ❤
Always!
rock stations wouldv been playing most new queen songs at the time
Back in the 60’s there was “payola “. The managers paid the radio station to play certain songs. It was ruled illegal.
Got it!
When Freddie was small , he took boxing lessons, he was really good at it.
Ah, very interesting!
Freddie was bullied in school......he took up boxing....he won the school boxing championship (of course he did)....there is a pic of him in his school uniform with the huge silver trophy that he won🤩
the face in drum is roger taylor
The song they had just finished playing in the beggining of this video was Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm surprised you haven't come across it yet. You listened it at live Aid but that was just 1/4 of the song. Most people consider it Queen's best song (though I disagree with that).
Coach knows that one, but not sure if Mrs. Coach does. Neither of us have seen the video, though.
Bohemian Rhapsody is one hell of a great song but in no way is it their best
Yep, the young people call this a "banger". I saw them five times and they opened with this on the Day at the Races tour-Freddie came out in a white boilersuit and stripped off to red and white shorts and red suspenders. Ooh la la! (The record company traditionally picked the single-with marginal input from the band. Except in Queen's case. See "Bohemian Rhapsody" for further details.) This is one of Brian's that Freddie def needed to sing. And yeah, it did get on the radio. Still does.
Very interesting. We appreciate you as always!
Another Sir Brian May song
Yes Roger face on his drum, he swapped things around, the Queen logo designed by Fred, only just watched the video, the title of your reaction came up in my feed so said who had written the song by just seeing the title
It was a fantastic song, can certainly understand why it's a favorite!
She just might enjoy it
the face is Roger's on the drum.
Great. Thank you!
Yes and once he said that, since the audience could hardly see him behind his drums, he decided to just put his face on it 😂
Yep, Freddie's idea.....
@@virusbebola Haha! That's awesome!
Brilliant rocking song! I know Coach really likes rock - react to "Now I'm Here" live at Wembley 1986 - the energy level is amazing! That version of Tie Your Mother Down rocks (better than Montreal IMO)
Thanks. Appreciate the suggestion!
If you read the lyrics you’ll know why it wasn’t on the radio. The parents and the brother were always in the way of his getting some lovin.
LOL!
Another great reaction, cool couple!! I think you're gonna like to react to "It's late" (Taken from the 'Queen Rocks' compilation of 1997)
Thank you!
This one was a single but it failed to be successful at the time because it unfortunately coincided with the punk movement taking off. Had they released it a few months earlier or a few months later, people would've probably been far more aware of it. Talk about the butterfly effect!
💥🎸💥🎤 💥 🎶
Love this song, thank you. Another one is Fat Bottomed girls.
as an aside, how things got on the AM radio back then? i'd think the majority was due to 'payola".
Makes sense. 😄
Queen’s very seldom played songs are way better than most of their main stream songs (and those songs are good).
Try Hammer to Fall, Stone Cold Crazy, Seven Seas of Rhye, Let Me Live and It’s Late. All fantastic songs.
A couple of those are on the channel now and "It's Late" is coming soon (already recorded).
I will look for them!
If you listened to rock radio stations it was played back when it's released.
Looks like it was released when we were too young to be doing much radio listening as we were still in single digits age-wise. That would explain why we never heard it.
It's Roger face on his Drums
Clear Channel controls radio content. They decide what gets played.
Please do love of my life live at wembley you will love it
You must react to more killing voice sessions on dingo plz
I knew this is one you all would like! It was played on radio but not like the staples. It is a shame that other song that are just as good did not get radio time . Another great one that did not get played is "It's Late". Another great that got overshadowed by the well known that are on the same album. I think the only one out there is the official lyric video, so no live. Also "One Vision" extended version is worth a check into.
We just filmed a reaction to "It's Late" a few minutes ago. Coming soon!
Reactors should always listen to the original studio versions of songs. Songs are for the ears, not the eyes. Forget about videos, just listen to the songs the way the artists intended them to be listened to.
We appreciate that opinion. We strongly prefer live music. Live has something that cannot be matched in a studio. Thanks for watching.
I see you've done you take my.breath away...apologies
No worries. We appreciate you watching. Saw your other comment first.
@CoachCastTV recently the montreal concert was in cinemas in imax....was pretty special...hope you got to see it
@@anthonyclarke8085 We did not, unfortunately.
@CoachCastTV can you believe queen only had 2 UK number 1s
Bohemian rhapsody and innuendo
@@anthonyclarke8085 No, that is hard to believe.
Please look Brian May Ressurection
Have you seen Freddie being carried on stage by Darth Vader or by Superman?
No we haven't.
Cool when is the next j Cole reaction ?
We filmed one today. Just have to edit and get it scheduled.
@@CoachCastTV cool

That one is coming tomorrow.
Ive seen them 3 rimes, twice wotj fRedu/

Nice reaction ❤❤ pls react to dangerous woman acapella by Ariana grande
Thanks. That sounds interesting.
The best Queen albums are from before 1980.,Then they became pop and not all of their songs were great.
Roger Taylor's Strange Frontiers album cover is the image on the bass drum. It's a very good listen. Check it out.
Very cool. Thanks!
@@CoachCastTV I'm just a broken old man, but I love Queen. Long live Queen!!!
No it’s not, it’s 2 completely different images. The image on his bass drum was drawn by Freddie, the image on strange frontier is actually from photo sessions for the works album
@@davebain1982 Wow! Someone wants an argument. Stay safe bruh.
Why you never hear these songs on radio
It's because
All you hear is radio gaga
that is the best question - why aren't these ON THE RADIO. there are soooo many that would better on the radio than the crap they do play!!!
205th like 👍
In my youth I enjoyed Queen, SlipKnot, Metallica ... but at this point I have moved on. I wouldn't listen to Queen today anymore than I would want to grow my hair as long as I did back in the day. The fashion and aura, sounds, and vocals are just too dated and worn for me. There are too many new artists to see and hear in today's music scene for me to have any time for this.
We can appreciate that take on it. For those of us who have never heard it, it is new music to us. Different strokes for different folks, as we say.
Scarface
This is worst Tie your Mother down from any Live show, Wembley shows are better, Live at the bowl Budepest, and Hammersmith 1979 , The Montreal show everyone likes so much is subpar to the others, even Somebody to love isbn better than at the bowl. Everyone is concentrated at Freddie of course, without his Bandmates who let him rule the stage and back down for the greater good , he is only wolf without Teeth, look at his solo stuff, apart from Barcelona Album every song is Bullshit
We haven't seen any solo stuff, but actually filmed Barcelona today.
Blacķpink?😢
