This is a WOW project, brilliantly filmed with crisp narration. Thanks for sharing.
Bakthavathsal Kadambi thank you so much for the compliments! I really appreciate your input.
This is a great table! I've been looking for something to go along with the secret compartment shelf I've built! Thank you very much for sharing and I think the video itself and narration are great. Keep up the good work!
Beautiful! The only thing I'd add would be some sort of magnetic locking mechanism in place of that plastic latch.
A few tips: if you use the pistons use jack chain for extra support. The brackets on those pistons are weak and bend easily. If you have even a little bit of weight in there it’ll eventually wear out and hit your bottom support board. Take time on the sanding, if you get in a hurry you’ll have to do it over. And the magnetic locks take some time to place and you might actually break a couple before you get them lined up properly. This was a fun build! 🤙🤙
zeroskater720 awesome tips! Thanks for sharing after the project!
Love the table. 👍. You look stiff and tensed. Need to relax and just be who you are. Personality brings people to your channel.
I appreciate the feedback! I’ve gotten a little better over time haha. Check out my newer videos and let me know.
I didn`t intend to make use of this woodworking book, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* but rather curious about it. I had been truly amazed right after trying it. It never disappointed me in my wish to acquire more information about the art of wood working. Many topics were covered, including everything from wood types to developing your workshop.?
Thank you for sharing this. Looking to adding secret shelf to existing coffee table. Very good work!!!
VinnyLand thank you sir!
Awesome bro I think I’ma use this for my cave /office .
Really good video mate, along with a great project! Thank you so much for sharing with us.
Most simple and genus table legs ever.
Thanks Michael! They are strong too!
I like the fact that you did all this without using more tools like a joiner, plainer or biscuit joiner. I don't have any of those tools yet so I think this earns the "Easy DIY" title.
Aaron Bono thank you! It’s a lot more work without those awesome tools!
Aaron, use a drill bit and wooden dowels instead of the plethora of pocket holes/screws and it’ll be much stronger, and no special tools are necessary, least of all expensive jigs and specialty screws.
Excellent work man. I've been looking for others who built a plank style coffee table and haven't found exactly what I was looking for until I watched this. The drop down drawer will definitely make my wife happy. Thanks for posting this! You got a new subscriber. I hope you keep on posting, I think you have great potential for a woodtuber.
Corrupted Nova thank you so much! I’ve been really busy unfortunately but definitely plan to keep building in the future. Just gotta find some time.
Awesome job!!! I’ll be making my own real soon!!! Thanks!!!
Nicely done! coffee tables are the best thing to make!
menno labee thank you!
Nice coffee table
Thanks for the inspiration and help, I made a bench a similar way!
Coll project. Simple but really cool.
shouts out to wood working in tanks and cutoffs! awesome build!
Awesome been looking for a video like this for a long time
Table looks great! Great video.
Thank you Jorge!
Nice build! Thanks for sharing.
731 Woodworks thank you! I appreciate the positivity!
Super awesome! Turned out so good.
Thank you! It was a fun project!
This passes the 30 second test, very nice.
Korgon2013 thank you!
With that background music and your voiceover, I was having Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood flashbacks! LOL. Seriously though… keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks man! I appreciate that! Been trying to put good stuff out there.
That's cool. I would like to build a similar table one day, with a hidden drawer of sorts.
Josh it was a fun build! I might do a nightstand/end table in the future!
Great work, I will try this project soon. Thanks
Dean Prosser please do! Let me know how it turns out.
I built three tables just like it but without the concealed drawer. I never thought of doing something like that. I’ll definitely have to go back and add this to one or two of them.
I bet you can double the price for a custom piece like that.
Looks great
Pretty awesome. I'd love to give this a shot someday
Do it man! It’s a cool coffee table.
Sick brother keep up the good work.. your styles are impeccable
Hey Jonathon! I appreciate it man! Working on a new video now. Should be out soon.
Must be in Az I see the palo verdes and mesquite trees in the background. Beautiful work!
That’s right haha! Thank you! I appreciate it!
Amazing idea, thank you :)
nice...awesome job
Really nice channel so far, and this video was fantastic. Subscribed
cool okay thank you! I appreciate your feedback!!!
Nice looking table. That would look good in my log cabin.
Walter Harder thank you! I agree! It has a lot of grain and would match really well!
Love this idea Tyler it's really nice and simple and looks good
Thanks Wayne! I’m working on a new idea for a tv stand that has hidden storage. I’m hoping to start working on it in the near future! I appreciate you watching!
@@WoodNerds can't wait to see that one
Looks like I just became your 1K subscriber! Good stuff man! Looking forward to other videos down the road.
jphallow78 thank you! I just saw this. It came a lot faster than I thought it would.
Came out great bro, I can't wait to fuck this one up. Love the added foam for your strap, it was a necessary touch.
Good stuff Buddy!! Well Done!!!!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
"Duly noted" said every thief everywhere....and that includes Congress...
Yep! I have a couple more hidden compartment builds I’m planning but after that I’m going to make a couple for myself that I don’t video haha. Feels weird stashing valuables in a spot some half a million people know about.
Great job👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😃
You just gonna rob me in the living room, huh?!?! Lemme just put my drink down on the coffee table... GUN COMPARTMENT 😭😭😭
Kyle Waithe lol! My thoughts exactly!
LOL... yeah. Because that's how home invasions happen:
"Lemme just put my drink down on the coffee table... "
"Sure, cuz... make yourself comfortable"
Buzzkill! I’d be like “you can lower your defenses, the money is right here in the kitche....” GUN COMPARTMENT
I’mma Giyya whatcha want. I’mma Giyya whatcha want!!!
This is great! Fantastic video! I would love to see what you could do with a template tool!
Emmy Braxtly
You really helped me out. I'm dropping a sub. Keep up the good work
Something that would really help for next time is telling us what each board detention is for each part because it's difficult to find out which board goes where.
I have been looking and wondering how to make a drop draw and I very much like the way you did it. The pistons was what I was missing.
Thank you Ray! I’m sure there is a better way but I wasn’t able to find it. I wish there were easy open drawer sliders (opposite of easy close) where it slowly opens so it won’t slam.
nice work i will try
Thank you! Let me know how it turns out!
Wow 🤩 eres muy bueno para trabajar , me gusta mucho tu trabajo , gracias por el video .
I appreciate that! Thank you for watching!
Awesome build!!!! I want to do one of these
Do it man! I’m going to build a 2.0 version in the future. Just thinking about plans!
Lots of cool ideas here bro - definitely gonna borrow some for a few future projects 🔥👍
Thanks man! I’ll keep an eye out for them!
Loving the content bro keep 'em coming
Nog Headz thank you so much! I’ve got another cool project in the works! Cheap too!
Looking forward to it
Is there a full set of plans anywhere. This is such a great build
Where can I get the plans for coffee table at .
this is awesome.
Rawl Sawh thank you so much! It was fun to build!
Wood Nerds I subbed. looking forward to more unique projects. I love the creatives.
U r genius 👍👍👍👍👍
I love the design. next time consider connecting the table top to the base with fasteners or clips, that allow for seasonal movement due to changes in moisture and temp.
Finally someone said it
Yes same here, that table top may split where the pocket holes were made. But nonetheless a great project.
People highly overestimate how much wood will expand and contract in a controlled environment. If you have it indoors with heating and AC, you aren't going to get a lot of expansion/contraction. The way this was built, he has much bigger problems than expansion and contraction of the wood.
You should try boiled linseed oil instead of stain. The thing that sucks though is you would have to put quite a few coats to get a darker look and let each coat dry atleast 24 hrs but it gives it a beautiful look.
blake102989 thank you for the tip! That sounds like an awesome finish!
Excellent work bro. Thanks for the tutorial!
Ryan Hartigan you’re welcome!
Wood Nerds
I’m gonna make a modified coffee table but really needed info on the compartment assembly so it was a huge help. One question if you don’t mind. At 12:54, you mention adding spacers for the butt-joints. I just wanna be sure I’m understanding correctly, are the spacers placed on the backside of the hinges that are mounted to the table frame?
Ryan Hartigan yeah! It’s to prevent the joint rubbing when the drawer opens/closes. It will make one hell of a squeak if they rub haha.
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, thanks! I really appreciate the responses. Keep up the good work!
Ryan Hartigan you’re welcome! Thank you!
Great video. I was wondering if this design would sturdy enough to support a granite slab about the same size as your table top?
Sorry for the late reply. I think so. Probably use screws instead of nails, and a thicker piece of wood supporting the legs/bottom shelf.
That's awesome.. think I may have to try it myself
Keep up the great videos
Chris O'Hara thank you so much! Please do and let me know how it turns out!
Great Video!! For your Lumber, are you using true dimensions?
Genius!
Thank you! I’m thinking about making a 2.0 version in the future!
I guess this is the project you learned that wood glue doesn’t stick well too finished wood, I.e stained wood.
Cool idea man! Keep posting!
What were the measurements for placing the sliders on the support boards and the drawer if you have them?
HOLY INTRO PAN SHOTS BATMAN!!!
Haha, take it easy! This was early on and I didn’t know my way around a camera quite yet.
@@WoodNerds lol no shame in that. Not making fun.
Haha it is pretty bad though! Glad I stepped up the production quality. Thanks for watching man!
@@WoodNerds It wasn't bad just a little long. I came here to see how the table was built... you did a great job on the table! I think I'm going to build one just like it. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you sir! Let me know how it goes for you. I really liked that table haha.
Your backyard looks fucking awesome !!
What about using rabbit joints to connect the leg pieces?
Sorry to say, but I have built quite a few drawers, cabinets, and tables in my day and have learned a few things doing so. Although this build looks nice when finished, I have serious doubts it would stand the test of time in regards to durability. A few criticisms: 1. Minwax polyeurethane is not meant as a tabletop finish. It is simply not hard enough and when applied to a soft wood, will not stand the test of time. You should be using a rated topcoat for tablet top surfaces. 2. The drawers you are building are being bound only by staples and glue with single 2-face jointing. The size of the drawer bottom will allow loading the drawer with enough weight where the drawer bottom has a good chance of breaking its glue mold and coming undone. The same with the sides, as the wood expands and contracts, it will eventually separate and come undone. You should be using a better way to join these surfaces. A dado cut along the bottom edges of the side would provide a groove the bottom can rest in and l greatly reinforce its weight capacity. Rabbit cuts for the sides will provide a 4-face joining for the glue and staples and greatly reduce the probability of it coming apart. These are all possible with the tools you are using. 3. The finish products you are using are sub-standard home-improvement junk. I used MinWax for years because I thought that one finish was just as good as the other and it was the one sitting on the shelf at the local home improvement store. But once I started to use other finishing systems (such as General Finishes), I will never go back. I know this sounds like alot of criticism (because it is), but I can not simply say nothing when I see obvious mistakes.
Minwax does suck. I learned this myself after I used it on some projects and noticed that regardless of how many coats I used or how perfect the application, any water dropped on a Minwax Poly finish would leave a permanent mark where the lustre was altered somehow by the moisture. I've since switched to a quality varnish and get a 100% waterproof finish with only one coat.
David, thank you for the way you brought up these criticisms. You didn't just say "YOU DID THIS WRONG", you gave examples and also gave alternate solutions. It is good to see that people can disagree and still be civil about it.
Your comments are how us new wood workers learn though.
Ok….. so name a “rated” brand and type of top coat? Also since you seem like someone who knows how to build this, I built it using some oak hard wood everything turned out great… except I bought some small shocks at Home Depot and their really tough to compress and once I got even just one shock screwed in it wants to push out the drawer immediately, I just want the shocks to expand when I apply alittle pulling force…. Any suggestions????
Yet you won’t post a video on this 🤣
absolutely going to do this. Only thing I recommend is to put some sort of notch or identification marking on witch side the drawer slides out of. For emergency/quick reaction purposes and incase your mistress likes to move shit without informing you.
Ron Brown haha!! Mine has a knot that I recognize! Great point though!
I might copy you bro !
I see that you used two of my favorite preventative items: anti-kickback pawls on the table saw and wood conditioner before staining. :)
Ellis Medavoy thanks for noticing haha. Kickback is nothing to play with!
Great work. Great video. I can’t help but ask... minus tools, what were your material costs for this? Cheers!
J.B. Beverley thank you so much! It was around $85. Give or take pending on what materials you might already have laying around.
I like youre caffee table, I'll will copy your table soon. Next time please add a drawing of your plan with the sizes. I need too change a bit, we calculate in cm or mm not in inches. Greats from Holland✌
Dennis Huijs thank you for the feedback! I built this in my head hah I’ll have to write the plans down next time.
R/choosingbeggars
I made this table, just other collers and a other lock. I just screwed a piece of wood add the front so if the drow is under the table I turn the piece of wood under the table.
You can download an app for Android devices that converts units, i like one called unit converter
I love the table but I also love your back yard block wall. Did you do it or was it already there. I would love to watch someone do that.
Thank you! It was already there! I live in phoenix and basically all the backyards have block walls around them. I bet there are a lot of tutorials on here showing how to though! If you build one I would love to see it.
Nice job I like the concealment drawer
Question what about wood movement on the top of the coffee table. I didn't see that you factored that in.
Hey Shane! You’re right! I haven’t had any issues with my previous tops but you should account for movement using specific table top fasteners that account for expansion/contraction of wood with changes in the environment.
nice
Just finished building this table. The magnet child locks I got won't hold the drawer up, so I added RFID locks.
That’s an awesome idea!
Loved your video. Soooo helpful! Thanks for taking the time to produce it. Suggestion: That background music is torture. I have to have the volume up to hear your wonderful instruction, but ..... That short loop track is killing me!!!
Haha thank you for the feedback. The music isn’t my favorite but it’s royalty free so I don’t have to spend money to license it. I’ll see if I can find something different next time.
@@WoodNerds you rock man!
@@WoodNerds Understandable...good luck with the music search!
What kind of wood did you use? Fir or oak?
Great design! It's hard to tell there is any concealment in this table..
Sick!
RB Rain thank you! I appreciate it!
Forgot to sub but I just did!
RB Rain thank you! I should be uploading a new video pretty soon.
Nice work partner. I'm going to have to give this one a try. Is lining up the drawer rails easy? - rev
rsgrev thank you! It took a a little bit but I wouldn’t say it was hard, just takes patience.
I like nerds always have been
How is the drawer secured in place, and how do you release it?
Sadpants McGee it’s secured by two hinges, two pistons, and a baby safe drawer lock/latch (however I am not using the magnet, just actuating the latch with my fingers from under the top).
Final tabletop dimensions and weight? Im new to carpentry but i want to build this with the scrap lumber we have on site
This is a real nice table but I would of used more screws! Nails and glue do a very good job at holding it all together but screws add that added protection!
How do you get it to open? I guess I missed that part.
Donna Spear you’re not the only one that missed it lol.
I really wish there was more direction
I would have like to see you test the compartment before putting the top on just to see the mechanical layout
Hey! Thanks for the feedback! I’ll keep that in mind going forward.
@@WoodNerds no problem great video 👍
Hey man! When you ran your 2x8’s through the table saw at the beginning of the video to make them fit better, how much did you take off? And did you do it to both sides? And did you do that with all of your 1x’s as well?
Hey Justin! I only take about an 8th inch off. Basically enough to remove that rounded corner. I rip both sides to get rid of that soft edge. I did that also with a lot of the 1x4s. I think it gives it a nice clean look but isn’t absolutely necessary for the build (you’ll probably like it better if you do!).
Just ran across your videos and am really enjoying your content, and your presentation is great. A question though... your obviously comfortable using pocket screws based on how you assembled the top, so why did you abandon them in the rest of the construction? Glue is great, but I feel that the screws add so much more strength. Just wondering if I’m missing something.
Hey Russell, thank you for checking my videos out! You’re right about adding strength. I didn’t really have a reason. Just wanted to do something different. Im working on more content ideas like this. I’m excited to get to work on them soon.
Would there be a blueprint for this?
What length drawer slides are you using? The Amazon link defaults to 20" but with your drawer length I don't think that is possible.
Jonathan Geist where is the amazon link for this? I can even find that
Awesome definitely building this next. You from Arizona?
Surge do it man! I am! How’d you know?
Wood Nerds I can tell by the yard and trees I just moved to Phoenix 6 months ago my backyard looks the same
Drink every time he gives a thumbs up.
Nicholas Schroer haha! Best comment yet!
Loved the video. What kind of wood do you recommend?
zeroskater720 if you’re trying to keep it cheap, then pine will work (that’s what I used). Keep in mind, pine is softer and soft woods are easily dented and scratched, with that being said, I kinda like the look of an older distressed coffee table personally.
Cool, thanks.
With the way you glued and screwed how did the piece hold up with expansion? I like the table
Honestly, I held onto it for 6 months with no problem then sold it. I have a coffee table I made 4 years ago, the same way (minus the fun drawer) and still no issues. I think I’ll be using z clips going forward though. Really no reason not to.
@@WoodNerds awesome thank you
Where can we buy this table is the question!
Angel Guerra They’re all over the Internet.
how much did you invest on woods ?
By that Harkins cup, I can tell you’re from Arizona lol. Love the video, I’m actually going to build this for my SBR
Pelon Jones you caught me haha. That’s awesome! I’d love to see some photos when it’s done!
Wood Nerds yea for sure, I’ll let you know. Gotta build the wife a laundry counter and cabinets first
Pelon Jones that sounds like a fun project! We moved last year and this new house has a long growing project list. Gonna remodel the bathroom pretty soon. Probably make a video on it. Trying to keep it cheap!
Wood Nerds right on. I’m subbed and ready for that vid to come out lol
Hi, great video! What size are those pocket screws? Also, what setting on the Kreg did you use to drill table top pieces? Thanks
Hi! I’m not home right now to check. You can reference the chart on google. Look for “how to select the correct pocket hole screw” and “kreg jig settings chart” I seriously have to look these up every time I use it haha. Keep those charts handy!
@@WoodNerds thanks! How long did you wait after pre-stain and staining?
Almost no wait at all. It says to not let the pre-stain dry.
