From KMD to MF DOOM | The Origin of a Villain
Вставка

- They don’t call him the Villain for no reason. After reemerging as MF DOOM in the late 90s DOOM came back with a vengeance against the music industry but why? To properly understand DOOM’s villainous approach to dealing with the music industry one must recognize and learn about his former group, KMD, and the backstory of their pivotal sophomore album.

The story of how a villain was born.

FINALLY somebody shines some light on Subroc's death. I understand that DOOM died but nobody talks about Subroc and his tragic death rather than DOOM.
This is an intense, in-depth documentary. We fans kind of knew an anecdotal version of this story, but this is highly detailed!
Thanks for putting in the time and effort! I’ll be here for episode 2!
KMD Black Bastards has a lot of dark/tragic irony from Subroc referring to himself as a "dead roach" multiple times throughout the album Zev Love X referring to himself as "the maniacal villain" the group being closely associated with Dr. York (infamous sexual predator) and the album's message going at black bourgeoisie for criticizing and losing touch with urban black culture (listen to the second verse of the title track Black Bastards) only for them to be bashed by Billboard critics who fit the same description. KMDs second album is an eerie, tragic, time capsule of potential that wasn't fully reached due to label politics and BS. Thanks for shedding light on this underrated part of DOOMS' career!
So that’s where “the roach is never dead” came from. Thanks for the knowledge
Imagine how many great talents you’ve never heard of because of politics and labels
@@mustbemeech Proably thousands (at least).
I’m from Long Beach and was at this dedication ceremony. I was unaware of the sketchy details on Subroc’s unfortunate death, and I hope his family (who are super cool) know more and have made peace with it. RIP
As a NYC local: you know how fucked the MTA can be. Sometimes you take a train, to a bus, to friggin' horseback trail.
facts, and then your train is only available through shuttle bus 😭
I still consider "Who Me?" by KMD as a top 10-15 song that Dumile has ever partaken in; a catchy upbeat song with fairly upsetting lyrics.
MF DOOM didn’t pick the right or left path he just went straight through the forest
Peachfuzz is a bop.
Unequivocally
Mans did his research
🤓📝
I can't believe they just didn't change out the cover. So crazy
“Black Bastards” is an amazing album.
X like the flick slick
Is too bad we never got the latter years' of Daniel Dumile as himself w/out the mask to explain his process of creating since he guest appeared in Gas Face with 3rd Bass. We have the Red Bull Music Academy interview and such - but, they were always as MF DOOM, so, the questions would be towards DOOM and not the overall body of work of Dumile. Maybe someday, there will be a full documentary on the man from interviewing everybody that knows him which there are a lot of people, from his wife, last surviving member, Onyx of KMD, Dante Ross, all 3 members of 3rd Bass, Kurious, De La Soul, Madlib, Danger Mouse, Czarface, Ghostface, MF Grimm and so many others.
honestly it would be my dream to make such a documentary, that would be the magnum opus of An Absurd Existence.
Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of reach.
@@AnAbsurdExistence - I think the current production house that would do a MF DOOM documentary would be Mass Appeal with Nas since they been pumping out a great amount of docs like about Video Music Box and the Supreme Team with partnering up with Showtime. Would be nice if you get to be a production assistance or something a long the line in their production. I think something like this would require the blessing of his wife first, so, there's a lot of things involve. If there's a way for you to contact Sacha Jenkins who has been doing a lot of documentary with Mass Appeal would probably be the person that would do something with MF DOOM.
They literally made him a Villain
Your editing continues to get better and better, dawg.
thanks bro! good to see you here (:
Soon enough bro is finna tell us how when DOOM died and where💀
Another WONDERFUL video! Really shed some light on why he became the mad villain
Thank you so much for this video. It inspired me to give Black Bastards a listen and wow does it transcend time. I would have never guessed it was from 1993.
Yo, much respect for putting this out. 💪🏾
amazing editing and great video all throughout. Can tell you put a lot of effort into it!
Man. I love your DOOM videos. Always hyped to see another

Been waiting for you to talk about 3rd bass❗️

Nicely done
This video was amazing! i really hope if you do make a part two to this You go over Proto-DOOM (when he was still Zev Love X but recorded Songs like Gas Drawls and Dead bent) And i also hope you go over The song he made with Earthquake as well because that song was great, Keep up the good work my friend Amazing video as usual
Thank you!! 1997 version of Dead Bent is sooo good.
@@AnAbsurdExistence Same, I love the way DOOM sounds in the version and i’m glad one of my Favorite Music UA-camrs Enjoys It as much as me
I can’t wait for the next video.
I'm glad you expounded on the fact that the media put a lot of pressure on elektra because of black bastards, although it doesn't justify the label dropping DOOM abruptly. The last time I read about it on wikipedia I found no mention of all the critics who panned the album and shunned the label purely out of aesthetic and not content.
need the next vid 🙏🏽
Yay new video
Cliff hanger? You villains bastard! Haha great vid. A podcast I listen wizard and the bruiser did a doom episode and idk their source but they said Subroc was crossing the highway on like a dare or something.
the plot thickens, I’ll have to keep digging! thanks for the lead.
cant wait !
Top notch shit bro ❤
Great video. As a hip hop fan of a certain age.... I remember Mr. Hood was far from a big success sales wise, even critically they were over-shadowed by Brand Nubian at the label. I even saw cut-out CD's at a dollar store. Easy for the non hip-hop execs at Elektra to shelve the album.
Nice vid
nice comment ☮️
Rest In Peace DJ Subroc, u meant everything to the world and ur brother man, ❤️
I heard an interview where dude said subroc died playing around like it was a game they played running across traffic. Maybe I read into that wrong tho cuz me and my boys used to get fucked up and run across the busiest freeway around. Makes you feel fuckin invincible when your 14 and loaded on st. Ides
The PRODUCT ITS AMAZING
RIP DOOM, PLUG 2 AND GIFT OF GAB
Back in 98 I had a copy of Black Bastards on heavy rotation in the wearhouse I worked at👊🏼
The origin story - nice.
Yes!!!
A POSITIVE Kause in a Much Damaged Society
This video made me want to buy the black bastards album and now ill have it by the end of the week
Dope
Wait I had no idea Cage was the last person seen with Subroc thats wild
Onyx is the last member of KMD and he's still alive and well.

What song did you use when you had the memorial for Subroc? 5:16

Ps: does anybody know where that selfie came from? I've seen it on reddit and in memes but never found the source
Can you do about Death grips iceberg🙏🏼🙏🏼
You should rank every DOOM song
Hearing DOOM be so on the beat is a little off putting hearing KMD for the first time
Right? It’s almost bizarre. But there really is a fundamental and philosophical difference between Daniel before and another the loss of his brother.
What is the tune starting at 1:35 , it sounds so familiar?
Thps - Roland Carriage
Man got cancelled before getting cancelled was a thing. No wonder he became a super villain.
Ayyy
Pls make a vid about MF DOOM fan albums
KMD 👍
What I wanna know, is how you've only got 87k subscribers.
I really need to know what he did between kmd and 1994 its almost like he totally disappeared. I know he used to wear a stocking balaclava and rap at spoken word bars and cafes
Oh, you mean between 1994 and 1997, after Black Bastards
what is that instrumental at the end? shame it got cut out
found it (end of ''the time we faced doom'')

I dont like when people say "one of the greatest underground (insert thing here) of all time".. like.. is it great or not? if it truly is, i think its valid to ditch the "underground" and just call it great
