You made this a little more complicated than it has to be. Madvillain is one of the greatest records of all-time. If you like that, you'll be ready to dive deeper. I have a playlist of my favorite DOOM tracks; there's 62 songs on there.
One beer was the first MFDOOM song I had ever heard. When I heard that instrumental my whole world lit up. I can listen to that song for hours on end, and it makes me feel like I’m a kid again during a late night falling asleep while AdultSwim is on my box tv.
Nice! My first MF DOOM song was all caps video back in 4-5th grade. That piano be at with the comic book like story had me screaming All caps every time I saw it at 5 am.
I’m in the same boat. I literally heard One beer for the first time 30 minutes ago and it really cought my attention and I ended up looking into doom and now I’m hooked
Bro that shit is heat. I always liked hip hop with sort of jazzy backings but i never knew mf doom sounded like that. Would have listened to it earlier if I knew.
DOOM was one of those rare artists who transcends their art form. He had a mastery of the English language that is usually reserved for literature. His lyrics are not only fun and unique, but incredibly dense with meaning.
I appreciate fans of dooms music being so open to newcomers, not only avoiding gatekeeping but actively encouraging and giving advice and recommendations. I heard coffin nails and knew I had to look deeper. As someone only just getting into his music, I appreciate everyone being so insanely chill!!
I feel like One Beer is a great intriductory song because it really brings all the eccentricities of Doom to the table, the intro plus the soulful vocals combined with the lyricism of desperation can really hit sometimes
My first introduction to DOOM was November Has Come by the Gorillaz and it remains one my favourites to this day. It's more accessible with the inclusion of a chorus, and a beat that is less busy than what DOOM typically works with.
I was gonna say, how is no one bringing up his feature with Gorillaz? Even if someone hasn't heard of DOOM, 9 times outta 10 they've listened to Demon Days, and his flow on November Has Come is iconic, it's pure DOOM, and if someone likes that track, you know you've got an easier job.
I remember liking it as kid, only acutally found DOOM years after J ust wish it didnt have that annoying whine that sounds like the aux isnt plugged in properly
personally i think fancy clown has to be hands down the most accessible. the sample is iconic, it’s simple to follow and if you comeback to the song after listening to projects like viktor vaugn, doomsday, or the rest of madvilliany, there is a whole side plot to understand with DOOM taking Viktors girl and that sets up so much more of his discog. i would also recommend can i watch because it was one of the first DOOM songs i listened to and i instantly loved it. think a vintage “Wet Dreamz” by jcole. it also helps build Viktors character which is super sick once you listen to gehdorah. Lastly, i highly recommend this because this is partially super underground, listen to monsta island czars, Escape From Monsta Island, end the self titled album from King ghidra. the two albums intertwine in stories and it’s filled with DOOM features. the songs that don’t have DOOM on them are also still heavily DOOM inspired so it’s a great listen
"I hear you in the background, when I ever I phone, telling your brother to say your gone, you been trippin around uptown, wooing some fancy clown." I od from heroin when I was 19 and my then girlfriend fucked my best friend when I was in the hospital fighting to get clean. Those lyrics got me threw some hard shit. Pain into anger that anger I uses to do better.
One song missing that I’d like to recommend to listeners is Gazillion Ear: I’ve shown that song to my friends that never had listened to DOOM before, and they fuck with it. Gazillion Ear is amazing with the beat switch of J Dilla production

Still "making new connections" is what makes Doom's work so fucking seminal. It makes me just thrall with wonder when this happens. I just can't comprehend his genius. Rest In Power MF DOOM
Vaudeville Villain has always been my favourite by far. Surprised that album doesn't get more love. I absolutely love the tone of the album and the beats and the rhymes.
I think Vaudeville Villain is the best starter b/c it has a more commercial feel with the braggadocious, money girls ect. subject matter. The prob is that is exactly why DOOM fans don't seem to like it.
@@grahamjl766 i agree with the more commercial sounding perspective (still hard asf), tho I haven't heard anything but love about that song by anyone including his fans
The first DOOM song I ever listened to was Meat Grinder, and while I wouldn’t call it accessible by any means, it did get me to look up more of his music. I was like “This is completely insane. I didn’t know music could be like this! I need to see what else this madman has done!”
Thanks for the recommendation. Whilst a lot of the tracks mentioned in the video are undeniably awesome, they don't really give me a taste of what MF DOOM is really doing differently from other [artists]. I guess that's what makes them 'accessible' but bro I'm out here trying to find WEIRD shit not music that sounds like everyone else's
I never get why Danger Mouse (Mouse and Mask) didn't get more love. I feel like this is the ideal introduction to MF Doom. The production breaks up the denseness in the lyrics so less goes over a new listener's ear.
Was my introduction to DOOM and I think it's fantastic and accessible. I like you use Benzie Box to introduce to others since it's a more typical rap song. Also the beat just makes cars bounce.
it was absolutely my introduction to DOOM. It has some of my favorite songs but I also love the Adult Swim vibe. Crosshairs is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Honestly, aside from a couple of show-themed songs (Space Ho's, ATHF, Perfect Hair) and various adult swim references thrown in here and there, most of the songs on the album just have some freshly recorded lines from the adult swim voice actors from back in the day (RIP C. Martin Croker) or clips from episodes mixed in similarly to Take Me To Your Leader's Godzilla movie clips. It's very on theme but I don't see it much different than TMtYL in that they're both for people that grew up with a particular brand of entertainment. Really, that album has probably the most accessible music he'd made since MM... FOOD? (in my opinion) and it's full of great starter songs that stand alone with few adult swim references (The Mask, Sofa King, Mince Meat, Crosshairs, Basket Case and No Names to name a few).
DOOM fan here - It took me quite a while to get into DOOM at the start, but I just couldn't get enough because I knew there was so much to comprehend lyrically so it kept me listening and kept me coming back. But I would say the Viktor Vaugh album from start to finish is a great place to start and one of his finest projects in my opinion, you really get a good grasp of the type of person DOOM is. Great video dude
Top 3 for me are One Beer, Accordion, and Fancy Clown. One Beer is just such a good story. You can follow the story with a visual in your head and the Huit Octobre sample is gorgeous. Accordion has a beautiful and unique track especially when the French horns start playing. Plus the rhymes in it are buttery smooth. And Fancy Clown has some of my favorite lyrics. It’s a lot more relatable if you’ve been in a bad relationship or cheated on which definitely sucks but man it just invokes such a strong feeling in you.
My first DOOM song was “?“ off of Operation Doomsday. I was instantly hooked, and 7 years later and he is still my favorite artist. Madvillian and Mm Food are definitely the best albums to get newcomers into DOOM. Showing songs from two different DOOM projects also gives you an opportunity to explain the fact his discography is split up by different aliases.
I tend to recommend Viktor Vaughn first and then DOOM because Vik is much more grounded and less abstract in his lyrics, even though I guess the opposite was often the case for the beats. But that's not a bad thing either, because the sci fi beats and the vivid lyrics combined really help you visualize what he's saying, moreso than the early DOOM tracks imo. New listeners can be drawn into his world without being familiar with his usual dense and cryptic style.
@@georgem3043 G.M.C "..told the lil monster i aint yo father. Its uncle Viktor, shut the lights im getting dizzy and close the door..cant you see ya mama busy?? " 😁
I discovered DOOM through November Has Come. If whoever you're introducing DOOM to is familiar with Gorillaz, I think it's a no-brainer. Send them to listen to all of Madvillainy after that.
I heard his name for years but wasnt into discovering new artists for a long time. After I heard his passing I decided to listen Operation Doomsday. It was one of those rare occasions for me as I finished listening the whole thing I ran it back and listened through it again immediately. Probably Im part of the "problem", for me finding new artists is like going out of my comfort zone so I usually stick to what I know and miss out on amazing artists :/
so im trying to make it inthe music industry and even if I have good raps and lyrics and sound good... how can I get you to listen?? would having good instrumentals help?? some that remind you of doom with the low nice melodic tune/vibe?? kinda like a lofi stuff??
@@AnAbsurdExistenceCan you talk about PXTSERYU's albums inspired on everywhere at the end of time,vCJD and Milwaukee Protocol? They're quite short and a very cool listen!
My first introduction to hip hop was MF DOOM, specifically his album Mm..Food. It was around 2009 or so on a late night and I was with my moms ex cruising around and he popped in the CD and I fell in love. And still after so many years I am still bumping his music and it hits just as hard as it did when I first heard him. But now that I am older I have more of an understanding of the lyrics than I did back then. MF DOOM had a big impact on me and inspired me to make music and I finally have a chance to do so now. It broke my heart when I heard he had passed. He is truly one of the GOATs.. RIP to the Illest Villain MF DOOM 🙏
My first Doom song was "Space Hoes". I heard it on a adult swim commercial and never got the name of the song so I had it stuck in my head for years. I figured out who he was because of Rob and Big. One of Dooms songs played in the show was called "Old School" on the same album as "Space Hoes". I listened to the album and then came across Space Hoes and was able to listen to the full song for the first time in like 10 years. Greatest music moment I've ever had in my life. To this day Space Hoes is my favorite Doom song lol.
The Mouse and the Mask (the album you're referring to) is my personal favorite. Space Hoes is one of the most fun DOOM songs imo, but that whole album is packed with great features and soo many references. Good album for pop culture junkies.
Raid is hands down my favorite song. The lyrics and beat are 10/10. I still remember where I was on 10/10/2020 when I heard ALL CAPS at my friend's house. It was almost like an outer body experience. I had heard the name MF DOOM for years but never got around to listening to him. I'm glad I got on board late rather than never. Over 2 years later I'm listening to his music and spreading the legend of DOOM. RIP to my favorite rapper of all time.
One beer left is one of those songs where the back drop alone has you caught. The unique and punchy drumline paired with the vocals just leaves it rolling around in your brain.
"One Beer" supporter here! This song is one of my favorite from MF DOOM. From the one of a kind beat, to the "no pen, no pad" flow, this man's lyrical ability was in it's rarest form of this track. (in my opinion) On top of it all, the pictures he is able to paint using words are so vivid it crazy. DOOM will forever live on!
I recommend all people listen to MM...FOOD because of how insanely listenable it is. I listen to it a lot of long car rides because of how enjoyable and funny it is. To me it was the perfect introduction to MF DOOM because his personality, production skills, rhyming ability, and persona all come out so well and in such a digestable way.
Used to play MM...FOOD all the time in the record store I worked at as a kid. All manner of customers would ask about it, not just those into hip hop. Was always glad to see someone like an old jazz head come in and fall in love with something completely foreign to them.
I'd choose Doomsday because it feels less busy than All Caps, letting you focus on the lyrics and rythmn more, it's sets a great introduction to the rapper and character and lo-fi beats are popular. The track's beats, scratches, breaks and setups are well recieved staples of rap music compared to foster's home for imaginary friends on loop. It's sugar flavor DOOM.
Also it has no outro skit, which are great but can be off putting to new listeners. Just lets them enjoy the music first without thinking “this artist is weird”
My first introduction to MF DOOM was November Has Come by the Gorillaz and it remains my favorite to this day. but personally id have to say that Benzi Box would have to be one of his most accessible songs. simple yet epic beat, and his rhymes arent as off beat and crazy as some of his other songs. very easy for most to understand and enjoy.
I think i would reccomend Benzi Box or Crosshairs to a new listener, benzi has a catchy hook and both have impressive but not overly confusing lyricism. The beat on Crosshairs is also insane
I think in general the mouse and the mask album is the best to start with if you're getting into MF DOOM. It's fun to listen to, and lets you acquire the taste of his rapping before you get into the rich intense lyrics in other albums.
growing up my older brother played rapp snitch knishes constantly, it was practically the sound track to my childhood, i never asked the name of the artist or song so as he changed music tastes it dropped to the back of my mind. A while ago i was just scrolling and recongised the beat instantly and as soon as the voice came in i already knew all the lyrics it was crazy. I think it doesnt matter how much you listen to that song it'll always been something else and i'm really glad to be re finding all this music that i listened to years ago. Also really nice video keep it up :]
When I heard my first DOOM songs (Doomsday and Accordion) I was both interested and confused because it was so different from most hip hop artists I've heard. I didn't understand his rhyme style and his beats for a while because they weren't on beat lol. But when I learned that music can be offbeat like jazz I opened up to experimental hip hop and music in general. Ever since then I've gained an understanding that he made the music he truly wanted without the influence of others while spreading messages in his songs with the raw passion of rhyming behind it, this is what original free thinking music sounds like and I love that. DOOM has easily became my favorite artist because of his style, creativity, rhymes and pure realness. Rest In Peace DOOM
I think Vomitspit is one of the best tracks to get people into DOOM, that or Rapp Snitch Knishes. I think Accordion isn't the best to get people hooked, it's more of a track for people already into DOOM. I find it very interesting that all the specific lyrics you pointed out don't really resonate with me, but I think that just goes to show how different DOOM lyrics just mean different things to different people, and the standout rhymes for everyone are usually different. For example, I really love the line in Fazers thats after the one you highlighted. "hope he live long enough to tell it to his grandkids." Keep making videos mate, I always learn a new thing or two.
I personally like accordion more than vomitspit, very close though. But even if you don't like accordion, i strongly suggest watching the lyricologist's breakdown of the song.
Duuude accordion is so good. Especially after he died, that accordion progression really hits me in the feels, like feeling the void that he can’t fill cause he’s not here. And then the “living off borrowed time the clock ticks faster “ as a first line is pretty powerful tbh
FIgaro is my favorite, Rhymes like Dimes is the song that got me into DOOM. But I'd have to say Rap Snitch Knitches is the song I'd recommend to a new listener just because of how iconic, approachable, and catchy it is.
I’m surprised fazers made the list. But I’m happy to see it. It’s the second mf doom song I ever listened to but instantly became my favorite. For the first year I listened to it almost daily. I even bought the song on iTunes so I could change the pitch and tempo. I still listen to it regularly and have to repeat it if it comes on while I’m shuffling songs. Absolute masterpiece
I would also say that "Can i watch" by his Viktor Vaughn persona is up there, but for some reason i don't think a lot of people know about that alter-ego, it tells a beautiful story
One beer is great because of the instrumental, it’s not even DOOMS best lyrics or anything it just flows great with the beat. It’s pretty easily digestible for first time listeners. Also, there’s a live version of one beer that’s really high quality and he’s wearing a vintage eagles jersey and I find that so dope.
I disagree when I was listening to the track and heard. He plots shows like robberies in and out 123 no bodies plz running cash and you won't get a wet sweat shirt. Considering how he's always wearing a mask just make sense since no one even his fans see him rob shows.
This list was super helpful. While I know most of these songs already, this list just encouraged me to go on a deep dive. I'm sad I didn't truly appreciate Doom while he was alive. However, if we are talking guest features as well, I suggest Highs & Lows by Phryme featuring Phonte & MF Doom. Doom blacked out so well that Phonte had to tailor his verse to follow Doom.
Super happy i found this video. Im maybe 3 or 4 months deep into discovering MF DOOM. My first handful of songs was Rapp Snitch Knishes, Crosshairs (probably my favorite) , Benzi Box, and That's That. Listened to King Geedorah independently too, just found out about all the aliases yesterday lmao.
When you said you remember exactly when and where you were when you heard your first doom song, that hit home. Brought me right back to that late night drive home when I decided to pop Doomsday in on the recommendation of a coworker at the time. Still get chills when I think about those smooth jazz samples hitting me for the first time.
Being a casual and more recent listener of MF DOOM I definitely agree with this list. Those have been in rotation a lot but I would add Hoe Cakes, Red and Gold, and gazillion ear
i dont think its an original song more like a viewer made song but "books of war" is still on the top in my opinion but i dont listen to much of his music just a few tracks
I'm mad surprised Sofa King wasnt on here or just anything off Mouse & The Mask. I wouldve thought it to be one of his most 'commercial' albums. 'DOOM is nervous large, you can tell by his blooming room service charge'. Never get tired of hearing that line man 😂
Meat Grinder introduced DOOM to me. I was and still am not a big rap guy so I wasn't expecting a good performance but fuck, man - the flow and lyrics on that track are straight-up infectious. For me probably nothing can come close to this masterpiece, both in DOOM's library and in others.
If we are talking about a song to start with, something has to be said about November Has Come. I didn't even realize I was getting introduced to MF DOOM while listening to Demon Days as a teenager. Years later, I got hooked to the Villain's flow, listening to Madvillain on repeat, following an interview of Mos Def where he praises the album. Re-listening to Gorillaz a couple of years later, I recognized the unique grindy voice of DOOM, and finally paid attention about the prophetic lyrics : "Nah, fo'real-a, the Villain on a Gorilla jawn?", just as if he could read my mind. I am positive that I'm not the only one in this case : it is certain that a lot of people have already listened to DOOM through this song, Gorillaz having reached a much wider audience. So I would argue that it is one of the best songs to put a foot through the door and introduce the Villain to your friends : "man you already know and love DOOM, you just haven't realized yet. And boy are you in for a treat !"
The first song I'd heard from King Gheedorah was Fast Lane. It took me out of this physical plane and made me hit my gas pedal harder than Ghidorah steps on fools. This was followed by me exploring the rest of the album and falling in love with Next Levels and Fazers as well. I needed more but was shocked to see it was his only ever album. But IMAGINE my surprise when I found out who he really was...
Same with me but I think the song I found first was fazers. After that I listened to the whole album, just like you, and went to tell one of my friends. Then my friend hit me with the "you know that's MF DOOM, right?"
Surprised "Old School" from DangerDOOM is not even on the extended list. Killer track, his verse is easier to follow than most, being simple, with a light sprinkle of his signature intricacies and humor
I listen to the beats mostly and started to see some memes of mf doom and i absolutely love em and now this video is recommended to me really fine stuff man
Honestly, one of the songs I personally would recommend to first-time listeners is Strange Ways. Not only does it have that Robot Chicken type music video that also gives a good introduction into DOOM’s world with the depiction of him and Madlib together, but lyrically speaking I think that song is easier to digest and it’s more ideal IMO.
I absolutely love all of your essays and takes on Do.. excuse me - DOOM! 😉 I've tried to listen to every one of them I stumble across. One theme I notice always mentioned by you and others is "how he comes up with his lyrics" or just general fascination in the approach to all of his persona's and the viewpoints he rapped from. I'm roughly the exact same age as DOOM, and grew up in Brooklyn in a similar atmosphere as he did. From that experience, I can tell you his lyrics reflect EVERYTHING from that time, and setting and from where you minds goes within each of those settings and situations. In those days every household in my neighborhood had a TV blaring 24/7 with cartoons all morning, game shows, sitcoms, then dramas. Every story DOOM tells is infused with the shows themes or one liners, commercials and products that were subliminally infused into our psyches, following us through adolescents & puberty. All of that was the fodder for classroom antics and stoop/ street corner baggin that gave us a chance to wordplay slam an opponent while basking in the limelight of being a one line Chappelle. Even when tv and media of the times didnt represent many of us, just knowing the daily programming and being able to unite on that commonality made us feel connected to something more than what we were. Giving a random bystander perspective is literally how we sometimes made nothing funny! I've been steadily bumpin a DOOM playlist of sorts since 2000 and it STILL makes me grin, smile, or straight up fall out (that's lol for current gen) on every playback! He so perfectly and completely captured the essence that was our lives in that time. Even with just a word "Bubble lip," you can recall when/ where you heard it used it, or remember the laughter of the moment it was spoken. The commentary from every home and setting in Brooklyn could be a #1 comedy hit! DOOM took what everyone was throwing around and we were all going through, and expertly wove it together over bumpin tracks. His voice and demeanor is just the magic! For me, DOOM is Brooklyn and his lyrics are my childhood. Anytime I want to feel closer to home or reminisce of back in the day, I just pull up his Playlist and from any track, hit Play - and I am home! Thank you for all your great content!
Only got into DOOM about a month ago but can’t get enough. Benzi Box was the song that first grabbed my attention. I also love the bits of cartoon dialogue at the end of some tracks Edit: just finished the vid - had no idea DOOM was king geedorah! No wonder I like king geedorah’s songs too
I personally think that the entire Mouse & The Mask album is great for first time listeners since it's probably the closest DOOM has been to "traditional" when it comes to his music. Also it's really underrated and more people need to check it out!
I believe they call that ‘Danger Doom’ and yes, it is highly underrated and doesn’t get nearly the props it deserves. And now on this Black Thought/Danger Mouse project they have ol’ Metal Fingers feat.
MF DOOM was my first rapper I heard him on November has come and was like damn this slaps so I found out the rapper in the song and I have listened to mf doom ever since
I've always found it easier to recommend an album instead of a specific song, it also gives the listener the opportunity to find their own favourites. At least this is my preferred method of listening to a new artist that I'm interested in. You know, just put on a record while you're cleaning, studying, programming or whatever and just listen to it.
@@bananarama-nw9md I would say mm..food, madviallany, and born like this are my favorite albums of his as a whole album. Vaudville Villany is also really good but I would guess its even less accessible than the before mentioned.
Figaro is definitely one of my favorite Madvillain songs, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a first timer because it's another song where you have to understand how he raps before it's really enjoyable. I personally would've gone with Fancy Clown, Strange Ways or maybe Money Folder. But realistically it's a better idea to introduce people to him with MM... FOOD? than with Madvillainy. That album feels more palatable to first time listeners and it's a good staring point for going forwards or backwards in his career. I also feel like Fazers would be one of the first songs I'd play for someone because of how clear and accessible it is. You get a decent feel for how he structures his rhymes and his subject matter. It's not a jarring as many of his other songs. And it's a crime that Gas Drawls isn't in that top 10. That, to me, is the most newcomer friendly song on Operation Doomsday. ...And Hoe Cakes. Because come on. Hoe Cakes was fire.
As someone who got into MF DOOM from listening to All Caps, I can agree it’s an amazing song to start with as it was after that I went and listened to MM FOOD and then my favorite album Mouse and the Mask which I have a limited release of on vinyl.
Fazers is my favourite MF Doom track! Super catchy, and the cinematic instrumental is amazing, although something he wasn't able to replicate quite as effectively in the rest of the album. I don't know why, but I love the lyric 'he don't know me very well, do he'. It's unexpectedly simple, but just so satisfying
First timer on this channel and (not to belittle the subject) already in love with u and the content for this 4:38 how dare you caught me so off guard with that beautiful piece of work from Shawn Lee in the background! lmao could hear that for dayyys! eeeasy new sub! :)
My first introduction to DOOM was back in the early 00s with Danger Doom, & the Mouse and the mask album. Checked it out after hearing it on adult swim bumps, & both artists have been staples in my libraries since.
A cool quirk these lyrics have missed at 3:03 is in the 3rd line. It actually says 'Right above my government, DOOM will lay' but the words are made to sound like his last name Dumile.
He pronounced Dumile wrong just like most celebrities with non English names from the US. Examples also include Talib Kweli when he said his name is in the middle of quality. Dumile is Ndebele, Kweli is Swahili and Kobe Briant is Japanese all these guys mispronounce their names
THATS THAT has my personal favourite closer to a DOOM song, with the tragically aged line "Can it be I stayed away too long? did you miss these rhymes while I was gone?". surprised that part wasnt mentioned, but maybe its just been done to death
Ya'll out here recommending songs to yourselves. Who is this list for the person who listens exclusively to underground hip hop but never listened to DOOM? None of his tracks with De La, Gorillaz, or Cee Lo? Nothing off of Vaudeville Villain which is by far the best album to have someone who listens to hip hop listen to first.
I could not get into MF doom at all at first, I listened to like all his early albums, and listened Madvillainy at least 3 times. Then I finally tried Born Like This and Gazillon Ear just unlocked him for me. I honestly still can't totally get into Operation Doomsday or Take Me to Your Leader, but his other 2000s albums are some my favorites of all time.
Nice one fam! (That Polymerization reference killed me😂) And I’d probably also say: “Dead Bent” “?” “Gas Drawls” “A Dead Mouse” “Saliva” “Bada Bing” “The Mask” “More Rhymin” “Deep Fried Frenz” (the Ronnie Laws Sax sample hooked me in) I’d also say “Next Levels” and “Guinnesses” for production even though DOOM doesn’t rap on those, but Stahhr goes IN on those and makes for an enjoyable listen. 😆
Anti Matter is a great MF DOOM song to start with honestly, in fact I’d say any song with Mr. Fantastik would be great for a first time listener. (Also this is not an MF DOOM song per say, but MF DOOM has a killer hook on Red by IDK)
@@Cdr2002 Y’know I respect that, but Anti Matter was the only reason I actually decided to listen to Take Me To Your Leader. So I feel like it would be a great beginning song.

I was scrolling to see if someone would mention "November has Come". Grew up with it on my playlist. uwu

personally i think fancy clown has to be hands down the most accessible. the sample is iconic, it’s simple to follow and if you comeback to the song after listening to projects like viktor vaugn, doomsday, or the rest of madvilliany, there is a whole side plot to understand with DOOM taking Viktors girl and that sets up so much more of his discog. i would also recommend can i watch because it was one of the first DOOM songs i listened to and i instantly loved it. think a vintage “Wet Dreamz” by jcole. it also helps build Viktors character which is super sick once you listen to gehdorah.

Vaudeville Villain has always been my favourite by far. Surprised that album doesn't get more love. I absolutely love the tone of the album and the beats and the rhymes.
This,, my first song was saliva,, hit me like a freight train
my first DOOM song was vaudeville villain and its SO GOOD
I think Vaudeville Villain is the best starter b/c it has a more commercial feel with the braggadocious, money girls ect. subject matter. The prob is that is exactly why DOOM fans don't seem to like it.

The first DOOM song I ever listened to was Meat Grinder, and while I wouldn’t call it accessible by any means, it did get me to look up more of his music. I was like “This is completely insane. I didn’t know music could be like this! I need to see what else this madman has done!”
I have Déjà vu right now , cos that exactly happened to me
Thanks for the recommendation.

Meat grinder is prime DOOM, up there with figaro
I never get why Danger Mouse (Mouse and Mask) didn't get more love. I feel like this is the ideal introduction to MF Doom. The production breaks up the denseness in the lyrics so less goes over a new listener's ear.
It’s possible the Adult Swim focus puts off others. I love the album. But I can see how it’s not as accessible.
Benzie Box was the song I was first shown, instantly became one of my favourite artists and listened to every one of his tracks that day haha.
? is a beautiful song
"?" And doomsday are like his origin story
Mine was Fazers 🗿
Vaudeville Villian is my favorite.
JJ DOOM isnt as praised like the other albums but he spits facts on that album
Some of his best lyrics on that album, probably my favorite too
I tend to recommend Viktor Vaughn first and then DOOM because Vik is much more grounded and less abstract in his lyrics, even though I guess the opposite was often the case for the beats. But that's not a bad thing either, because the sci fi beats and the vivid lyrics combined really help you visualize what he's saying, moreso than the early DOOM tracks imo. New listeners can be drawn into his world without being familiar with his usual dense and cryptic style.

Madvillainy is one of the most important hip hop albums in recent memory. It'll be looked back as the masterpiece it is.
Was always glad to see someone like an old jazz head come in and fall in love with something completely foreign to them.
not just the perfect introduction, but the perfect DOOM album
Honestly, I think Rapp Knitches is a pretty good introduction.
I don’t understand how people find DOOM hard to listen to. It’s not like he’s making JPEG type music.
I just recommended my friend to listen to this album yesterday 😂
I'd choose Doomsday because it feels less busy than All Caps, letting you focus on the lyrics and rythmn more, it's sets a great introduction to the rapper and character and lo-fi beats are popular. The track's beats, scratches, breaks and setups are well recieved staples of rap music compared to foster's home for imaginary friends on loop. It's sugar flavor DOOM.
Me too
Also it has no outro skit, which are great but can be off putting to new listeners. Just lets them enjoy the music first without thinking “this artist is weird”
Feels like rhymes like dymes is also kinda the same with its chill upbeat type rhythm and there being nothing but the song
@@scoutbite4334yeah but then they hear “Buttery Biscuits” and that outro and are like nah he weird 😂

Rest In Peace DOOM
doom is trash
First time listener, I appreciate the video!
One beer was the first doom song it is just catchy
I would also include "Let me watch" from Vaudeville Villain, it's a pretty solid list tho.
Underrated song.
*"Can I watch?" and how is it under rated? Its the most popular song on the whole VV album
FIgaro is my favorite, Rhymes like Dimes is the song that got me into DOOM. But I'd have to say Rap Snitch Knitches is the song I'd recommend to a new listener just because of how iconic, approachable, and catchy it is.
Figaro is my favorite too , sick ass track.

What an amazing video!!! Congrats and thanks for discovering MF DOOM to people
Super happy i found this video.

I'm mad surprised Sofa King wasnt on here or just anything off Mouse & The Mask. I wouldve thought it to be one of his most 'commercial' albums. 'DOOM is nervous large, you can tell by his blooming room service charge'. Never get tired of hearing that line man 😂
It is by far my favorite album of all time. The amount of times I've listened to it is immense. Whole thing first word to last is just 👌
This is the exact type of voice that I assumed would be explaining this video
Once you listen to DOOM and you get vibe, strange ways hits diff.
Absolutely and Rhinestone Cowboy are highest in quality. They lack the sometimes quirkiness you may get from DOOM.
And boy are you in for a treat !"
i would recommend benzi box for first time listeners, the hook literally sounds like an introduction to doom
The guy on the news clip, what an unexpected white collar villain!

Monkey Suite is hella underrated.
Monkey suit is a great track no doubt
Big agree. It's approachable for new listeners but also very representative of DOOM, containing a lot of his typical techniques.
Deep Fried Frenz and That's That are my favorite. Sadevillian is a very chill fan made album for casual listeners as well.
I hope that this is one long-ass analysis video that I can watch multiple times.

I also love the bits of cartoon dialogue at the end of some tracks
Edit: just finished the vid - had no idea DOOM was king geedorah! No wonder I like king geedorah’s songs too
I personally think that the entire Mouse & The Mask album is great for first time listeners since it's probably the closest DOOM has been to "traditional" when it comes to his music. Also it's really underrated and more people need to check it out!

What album do you pick to recommend?
@@bananarama-nw9md I would say mm..food, madviallany, and born like this are my favorite albums of his as a whole album. Vaudville Villany is also really good but I would guess its even less accessible than the before mentioned.
@@maxpeter4171 My first DOOM song was vaudeville villain, and that alone got me hooked on him
Figaro is definitely one of my favorite Madvillain songs, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a first timer because it's another song where you have to understand how he raps before it's really enjoyable.

I would have to say that Red and Gold would be a great song to introduce DOOM. It’s very chill and it’s definitely my favorite
"Hope he live long enough to tell it to his grandkids" hits harder now
I’m sorry but Curls not even making top 30 should be a crime, everything on that song is the embodiment of perfection
For real, favorite doom song rn tied with operation life saver
Algorithm is crazy. Listened to MF DOOM today for the first time and tried to get into him and now I’m seeing this on my page lmaoo
Lol, is the song playing in the background during 6:12 from Castle Crashers?
Lmao I commented the exact same thing but I’m 100% sure it is
Yes!! Thank you!! I couldn't remember what it was from and it was driving me nuts hahaha
A cool quirk these lyrics have missed at 3:03 is in the 3rd line. It actually says 'Right above my government, DOOM will lay' but the words are made to sound like his last name Dumile.
damn. Ive heard Doomsday atleast 50 times now and I always thought it was “ right about my government, Dumile” like people knew his last name
He pronounced Dumile wrong just like most celebrities with non English names from the US. Examples also include Talib Kweli when he said his name is in the middle of quality. Dumile is Ndebele, Kweli is Swahili and Kobe Briant is Japanese all these guys mispronounce their names
The choice for the intro music is just so perfect!
THATS THAT has my personal favourite closer to a DOOM song, with the tragically aged line "Can it be I stayed away too long? did you miss these rhymes while I was gone?". surprised that part wasnt mentioned, but maybe its just been done to death
Fancy Clown is actually the perfect song to introduce a novice to Doom. It is hilarious and easy to follow for the laymen lyric listener.
Operation Greenbacks - One of my favourites but also an easy introduction to his rhyme style
Nice one fam! (That Polymerization reference killed me😂)
And I’d probably also say:
“Dead Bent”
“?”
“Gas Drawls”
“A Dead Mouse”
“Saliva”
“Bada Bing”
“The Mask”
“More Rhymin”
“Deep Fried Frenz” (the Ronnie Laws Sax sample hooked me in)
I’d also say “Next Levels” and “Guinnesses” for production even though DOOM doesn’t rap on those, but Stahhr goes IN on those and makes for an enjoyable listen. 😆
Man, mf doom is the kind of people you miss even though you have never crossed path with them.
ALL CAPS when you spell the man name
Anti Matter is a great MF DOOM song to start with honestly, in fact I’d say any song with Mr. Fantastik would be great for a first time listener.
(Also this is not an MF DOOM song per say, but MF DOOM has a killer hook on Red by IDK)
Great song for sure, my only issue is I feel it overshadows other Take Me To Your Leader tracks. Wish songs like Fazers and Fine Print got more due
@@Cdr2002 Y’know I respect that, but Anti Matter was the only reason I actually decided to listen to Take Me To Your Leader. So I feel like it would be a great beginning song.
Doomsday is the only DOOM song I've ever heard on the radio
THATS WILD
I'm surprised vaudeville villain wasn't in the top 10 because it's what got me into his music in the first place but honestly all this stuff is awesome.
My first MF DOOM song was Rapp Snitch Knishes... Just the whole vibe of the song with the coffin nail guitar lick is so groovy
