Great video, Man. OG Resident Evil is one of my favorite games of all time. I played the OG PS1 version first at my friend's house and finally ended up getting my own copy when the Saturn port dropped the next year. These days when I want to do a run through, my go to is the DS version (Classic Mode) just because of the portability; it's ideal. There's something oddly charming about the old tank controls of the RE1 through 3 and Code Veronica, that the new games lack. Every time I play these, and the original Dino Crisis, I'm taken right back to the 90's.
Now if you ask me about which versions the original Resident Evil 1 is the best it is the definitely the ORIGINAL director's cut NOT the dual shock version. I played all versions of the original game & if you really want the REAL & ORIGINAL Resident Evil for the PS1 version take the JAPANESE version of the original director's cut because the American & European releases FMVs are censored in which the back cover of the US release director's cut says that it has the complete FMVs which turned out to be censored & not complete. The other 2 versions that I really liked are the PC & DS versions because of their exclusive contents. The PC version has the ability to skip door animations & also it has 2 exclusive weapons for Chris & Jill when you beat the game. Chris gets an FN Minimi with infinite ammo & Jill gets an Uzi with infinite ammo. Plus the PC version is by far has the best presentation out of all the versions The DS version has the same contents from all the previous versions. Like the PS1 dualshock version, when you start the game it will display the warning in which the game consists of gore, etc.. & like the director's cut, it has 2 games which are rebirth mode & classic mode & also it has the ability to hold the right d-pad button for a few seconds to make them modes easier. Like the PS1 Japanese version, viewing the files now have background images. Like the PC version, you can skip door animations & like the Saturn version, it consists of a battle game called Master of Knifing in which can be unlocked when you beat the game & the DS version has multiplayer mode of up to 4 players & what's really cool about the DS version is not only has the similarities from the previous versions, but also has contents taken from the 2002 remake like the credits song, the handgun & magnum animations are taken from the 2002 remake. Also another noticeable feature is that the DS version has upgraded sprites for the characters & enemies. The Saturn version is identical to the original PS1 version & one thing you said wrong is that the Saturn has uncensored FMVs which is not the case. The uncensored FMVs are exclusive to the Japanese port of both the PS1 & Saturn versions & by the way, the Japanese versions of both the PS1 & Saturn versions have auto aiming, in which the American & European versions doesn't. Another thing that nobody notices about the Saturn version is when the player fights the zombies. When the player kills the zombie, the zombie's sound effect is actually when he attacks the player & when the zombie attacks the player, his sound effect is when the zombie is killed which means the zombie's sound effects when attacking the player & getting killed are the opposite. The Saturn version consists of a new version of a hunter called a tick in which can be encountered in the caves & another thing to mention is when you play as Chris in the Saturn version, you will encounter 2 tyrants in the lab. The battle mode of the Saturn version consists of 2 strong enemies: A zombified Wesker & a golden tyrant The dual shock version is by far the worst version of the original because of the new soundtrack & what's interesting about the soundtrack itself is some of the songs were ok, but most of the time it sucked. Some of the songs in the dual shock version were later used in next installments, but I know one song in the dual shock version was later used or arranged in Resident Evil 0 & that is when you first meet Rebecca in the safe room. By the way the dual shock version is COMPLETELY different from the original director's cut because the enemies can be tougher to beat & sometimes it has extended enemies you may encounter like when you get the map of the second floor of the mansion (arranged mode), you may encounter 2 zombies in the room. Resident Evil 1 will always be the greatest RE game of all time (both the original & remake). Here's how I rank the versions from best to worst: 1. Original Japanese Director's Cut (Best) 2. PC 3. DS 4. Original Japanese PS1 5. Saturn 6. Dual shock version (Worst)
The best version of Resident Evil is either the PC version with the Classic REbirth Mod or the DS remake, at least if you want to play the classic RE experience. The QoL additions to RE:DS are great, and the new 3D models also looks great too, but Rebirth Mode is honestly pretty bad if you ask me. Arrange mode and Battle Mode in The Director's Cut and Saturn versions are really neat additions, and it's a shame that they did not find them ported to any other versions. I wish we had the modded PC version with Arrange and Battle modes added, that would be the definitive experience.
Hey, nice video, I really enjoyed this one. :) I have never played any of the Resident Evil games! It's just a series that always got away, and now I feel like I'm way too far out.
Trust me, you are never far out unless you want to be. Find the version that's speaks to you most, and go with that. The series is simple to get into, so whatever is more convenient is the way to go
Fantastic comparison! Recently played through the classic rebirth version on PC, with the 180 quick turn I think it makes the game just so much more fluid to play that it makes it the best version for me, also can’t beat that voice acting haha

What just add, it's a great game that age pretty well IMO, the Deadly Silence is a great way to play it with a lot of add, the map on the screen is the best exemple.

It's so weird the way Saturn made polygons, they were triangles I guess layered over each other to create the shape, that's why it's so jagged. However, I guess polygons on PS One were square...I'm sure everyone knew that except me before I read that haha. The hand was supposed to belong to Edward Dewey by the way. He had both hands in the final version of RE 0, but originally he was supposed to be missing it. I can only assume it was some sort of lame Nintendo censorship thing that he wasn't missing it, as they censored the decapitations in the REmake. As great as a game it was, it would have benefitted from the same gore as previous RE games.
Nice Video. Good explanations and nice Showings of the difference between the Consoles/PC. But for Information there is a german DC Edition which got the colouring intro on PS1. And there is also a PSP /PSVita Digital Version. It is also in the DC Mode, but got no colouring Intro, because it takes the US Version, which got only the Black white Version. I See also the PSP Edition (crossplay with PSVita and Ps3) also as an different Version. And the famous first eating Zombie with the falling head of Kennerh got only three Editions, the PC, Deadline Alliance and the japanese DC DualShock Version. Just Information from a extremely Resi Fanatic which got like 16 different editions/Version (different consoles also) of the first 4 games 😅

I was surprised as I just came from the OG cast playing the first game, I think they are doing a Fan series or something...but still I couldn't play the game the voice acting was still just so BAD. I think I'm still just broken after hearing Metal Gear Solid and I gauge everything off that....but still funny to see a HUGE chris in the Saturn version.
If you have a PS2, you can texture filter the PS1 disc and it looks really great when you want to keep that crt look without artificially upresing everything (backgrounds suffer in higher resolutions)
I think I prefer the regular director's cut instead of the dualshock version just because of the ost. I wonder how long a video of a port vs port for re4 would be 🤣
I don't even wanna think of an RE4 port vs Port. I was down one day but to see how long that would be...yea that's gonna be an undertaking. Idk if it's even worth it Imho

Saturn's version feels more detailed than PS1
There definitely is more, but for some models might look a bit rough in comparison to the PS1.

Saturn Version is the one for me. If I ever want to use an Analog Stick. The BrawlerGen Controller will be put to use.

You have the Japanese Saturn version. The North American Saturn version still has censored FMVs.
