I love my Saturn and still play it often. I had to rebuild my library due to some games being left behind during a move, and the prices of most of them are ridiculous! One place near my home wants $300 for a copy of MegaManX4.

Sega REALLY should release a Saturn Mini. It would be a gorgeous console with a great controller, especially if they did the white Japanese model. And, once hackers modified it to allow ROMs, you'd be able to expand the library with games from all Sega's consoles and beyond. Now that would be very cool indeed.

I was aware of the 4MB expansion cart as a kid. Didn't have a Saturn when it was new, but I eventually bought one at a flea market for $50. That's before factoring in games and an adapter for HD RetroVision's Genesis component cable. As for the Pseudo Saturn exploit, I saw that coming since I watched Adam Koralik's video on the Saturn a good few years ago. He mentioned how it's theoretically possible to create an EverDrive for the Saturn. This console keeps surprising the hell out of us 28 years after its release.

For those having issues with the replay card such as resetting to the bios screen or trouble in FMV: the replay card produces electromagnetic interference which can mess up the CD reader. I solved my issues by shielding the card using a bit of aluminum foil in the inner wall of the replay card. When doing this keep in mind the aluminum foil should be isolated with doug tape or similar, as a short circuit can permanently damage your console.

I still have my PAL Saturn bought in 1995, with my cousin, we quickly figured out how to play imports and back-ups by putting a piece of adhesive to shut down the button which detects the opening of the lid, to make the console believe it was closed, and then, a dual swap (first the import/back-up, for the console to learn the CD layout, then an original from the console's country for the protection, and the back-up/import again).
The trick worked in the second version of the Saturn as well, but it was a bit trickier, you had a shorter windows for the swaps.
Finally, we installed a double switch in our consoles, which allow to switch between any version and frequency, PAL, NTSC US and Jap, and even PAL 60hz :-)
We had such a blast with Athlete Kings/Decathlete, Virtua Fighter 2, Dead Or Alive, Fighters Megamix, Street Fighter Zero 2 & 3, KOF 95-97, Nights, SEGA Rally, Saturn Bomberman, Worms, Virtual On, the first Tomb Raider and so on... :-)

However I fully agree with you regarding titles like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Super Tempo (which has become one of my favorite platformers) are absolutely not worth paying anything North of $100 to experience. I accidentally found an easy way to mod a model 1 PAL (VA3) Saturn to 60Hz - I found some circular adhesive pads, about 10mm diameter, basically the sort of thing you may find as feet on a small electrical device. I popped a bit of solder in the middle of the pad, opened up the battery port of the Saturn, and popped it over the middle two of the SW4 contacts, near the battery reset button - sitting very snugly within the case plastic. A switch would obviously be better but I was amused that it worked, and better still, you can remove it any time (even when the power is on).

I'm from El Salvador, so I'm going to talk in dollars.
I agree to give our $800 to developers now rather than digging sooooo deep and even sometimes without success. Because that is how we keep them working and launching awesome works that will be very appreciated in the future; I'm a retro collector, but I'm aware that is more a luxury than really supporting the industry in the present.
Needless to say, we are everyone having a hard time.

As an American, I do not have access to Jellied Eels. Salt & Vinegar Stax are my go-to! If I can find them...
Also, I just got myself a fresh Saturn! Sadly, my old one lost its CD drive to a botched modchip installation. Getting a Satiator for this new one; it lets you load from an SD card, and fits in the VCD card slot at the back! No permanent mods, _and_ you can keep the cartridge slot free!

Great video! I'd recommend burning the discs at a lower speed though, as this would probably cause less wear on the Saturn disc laser (which homeburnt discs already cause more than retail).

It the scalpers on ebay thats buying game if lucky for cheap then selling it on for more >< like thy do with everything almost. Also CD-r's can damaged your Saturn's lazier, so if you can always burn them at first speed, Speed 1. Not more then that or it can speed the disc up to max and end up burning out the mortar or lazier.

I used the swap trick back in the day around the year 2000 (after I got my first CD burner) to play burned copies of mostly out of region games like Shinrei Jusatsushi Taroumaru, Silhoutte Mirage and Radiant Silvergun (all expensive nowadays and still missing from my collection). Of cause you had to use some tape to "mod" it so opening the tray didn't close the game.

Whenever I have the opportunity, I buy a Sega Saturn game at an affordable price, but you are quite right that it is not necessary to spend millions of dollars to pay people who speculate on the prices in the market, especially since there are improvements in the Sega Saturn that enhance the console is great. For example, Symphony of the Night Extended 1.5, which uses 4mb RAM and speeds up the game and even has graphical improvements including transparency that were criticized for so many years that Sega Saturn could not do.

OK... Now I want a Saturn too!!!
    I love everdrive-like cartridges!
I've collected the NES & Famiclone, Mega Drive, SNES, N64, PS2, Game Cube, GBA, XBOX 360,Nintendo DS, Wii.... Also Atari 2600 Jonior (with lots of build in games) and CPC 464 with lots of cassetes (gonna mod it to work with an mp3 player).
For all those systems I have either a large game collection, an "everdrive" or an HDD. I was hoping to get the Dremcast and the 32X (with a MEGA SG maybe) someday.... but now I want the Saturn too!
I'm trying to collect gaming stuff that was part of my childhood, and I had very little contact with the Saturn. But with a falshcart it becomes so much more intriguing :)

I got my Saturn in the summer of 1995. I played it like crazy for the first couple of years until game releases started to slow down. I boxed it up not long after the Dreamcast was released. Pseudo Saturn made me dig it out again to experience some games that I've always wanted to play and some that I never knew existed. I made my own Pseudo Saturn cart a few years ago with a 4-in1 Action Replay Plus cart. It didn't lose the ability to use it as a RAM expansion cart. These newer pre-made carts had that problem because they weren't made with the extra RAM.

    Nice video, Lady Decade!
I've learned quite a bit about the Sega Saturn history's more unknown aspects and games, but this is new to me.
All of those Japan-only titles, especially Shining Force III: Scenario II & III, clubbing together with our own PAL titles, to create the complete Sega Saturn experience!
Panzer Dragoon Saga is utterly superb! 1998 all over again!
I always wanted the Sega Saturn to last longer than it did, perhaps till circa 2001/2002.
Though I have no complaints about playing these games in 50hz. It's nostalgic for those of us who grew up in the UK/Europe back in the day. But you'd know that already 😉.

I see they now have a combo converter with 4MB ram. I wish I had that back in the 90s. Can't believe it's been almost 30 years. Anyway, we got very good at timing that swap during the Sega logo.

NIGHTS: Into Dreams, was ported to the PlayStation 2. Which technically is newer hardware, as the Saturn was discontinued in 1998 and NIGHTS: Into Dreams, was released in 2008 (only in Japan though). A whopping 12 years after it was first released on the SEGA Saturn, a year we wished that SEGA did a re-release of N:ID on the Wii, instead of that godawful NIGHTS: Journey of Dreams. SEGA, however killed NIGHTS with the Wii title, but... In 2012, SEGA released a high definition version of N:ID on the PS3 and Xbox360. Worldwide, which even includes Christmas NIGHTS. While those of us who bought it on PSN, we're stuck without a NIGHTS game on the PS4/PS5 (unless we really want to play PS3 for a small handful of SEGA games). However, those who purchased on the 360, would be able to continue playing on the One and Series X/S. But more impressively, it's on Steam, so it's not going anywhere fast because Steam is the future for some gamers. 😎

As you pointed out, one slight problem with using Pseudo Saturn for NTSC games on a PAL system, it won't play at 60Hz without a hardware mod. If you already have a PAL system, depending on which version of the system you have, the process to do this is easy to moderately tricky. I had my model 2 PAL Saturn modded with a modchip to auto-switch the 50Hz / 60Hz modes and at the same time I had the FRAM mod done so game saves are no longer dependent on the battery backup. I also fitted my Saturn with a Satiator (VCD Card Slot CD drive emulator) so I don't even need to use the CD drive to play games (but it is still available to use if I want to play from a CD) and I have every single game that is playable by a non-Japanese speaker loaded on to it! Naturally I also have a combo Save / RAM / Pseudo Saturn cart, 3D pad, 2nd issue Saturn pad (like Japanese version but black) and even the steering wheel controller!!

If you like this, you may also want to check out the Satiator, which plugs into the expansion port on the Saturn and can load games from a micro SD card - it's plug and play, with no need to take apart the console (similar to the PSIO for the Playstation).
There's also a mod for the PS1 that uses a flashed GameShark Pro that works just like the Pseudo Saturn - plugs into the PS1's parallel port and plays burned CD-Rs flawlessly!
