i think that ecbert in his prime could possible defeat ragnars sons and their army. Or atleast cripple it so much that they would be forced to retreat back to their own country
Shiskebab616 lol....Ecbert in his prime would have soundly defeated them. If King Alle was not so arrogant and instead march his army to unite with King Ecbert. Then under Prince Athlewulf would have easily beaten those Vikings.
Ragnar and rollo are over-rated as commanders. Bjorn and Ivar have done more impressive feats IMO. Ivar the way he defeated aelle and aethewulf and Bjorn the way he defeated Ivar in that first battle for kattegat.
@@paultokjian7915 Not a chance. Ivar's way too clever and has proven that he can overcome far greater odds, through his sheer ingenuity and tactical genius.
Ecbert had a small hope that Aella's forces would atleast severely weaken that Heathen Army... yet Aella's army was VASTLY ounumbered; the Vikings arrived with a force SO massive, ferocious, and driven, even if al lthe Saxon armies had united there on that field alongside Aella, they probably still would have defeated the Saxons. Vikings were superbe warriors and their bloodlust for revenge made them even more impressive. Saxonds may have had discipline, organisation, and better equipped troops, in a 1 on 1, no saxon could stand against a Viking. the Saxons nééded superior numbers and tactics to overcome such an adversairy. Aella's army being swámped like that, was a big loss for the Saxon kingdoms of England. Northumbria was the second-strongest Kingdom, after Wessex. Mercia was still in disarray? To put a rough count to it; Northumbria would make up about 30% of all of England's army? Wessex about 35%? Mercia 25% at best. The other 10% was from the smaller kingdoms? So England lost about 30% of all its troops, and one of the strongest Kingdoms had fallen, which was ofcourse BAD for morale already. The Viking Army was berely scratched, due to their overwhelming of Aella's forces: they now had a taste of the revenge they were to extract!
King Ackbert, the practical guy. He does not care if it is his son, feiend or God. If they are serving his ourpose, fine. If not, he does not hasitate choosing other path.
If King Alle's and King Eckbert's army had united under Athlewulf's command (i'm sorry if I spelt their names wrong) before the "Great Heathen Army" had arrived, those Viking bastards would have been soundly defeated. Just like when they were defeated by the first alliance army of both Kings.
And this isn't a one nation army but five I think. Vs the three kingdom army that Ecbert-Aelle would have. Inferior troop morale, lower aggression normally, and Bjorn who would've no doubt told his brothers of Ecbert's tactics
The only reason ecbert and aella beat ragnars army the first time was because king horik wanted to attack them and ragnar wanted to use strategy and keep the high ground if horik had listened to ragnar then ecbert and aella army would have been destroyed
If aelle had United his army with ecberts and if he had gone back to the scrolls to see how the romans took care of business and drew from that again they might have given the heathen army a much harder fight
What is going on? why are the making me like all the minor characters like Aslaug and Athelwulf before killing them off. Am I that desperate to hang on to the original cast or have their characters gotten better with time?
dr1345 ...Or could it be the characters motivations and personality were revealed more as the story progressed?! The way they presented Athelwulf has changed over the seasons. In season one he was a one note goon for his father who was caught up in an affair with crazy Kwentrith. And you are trying to tell me this character is the same as this season's Athelwulf. I call bullshit. Acting like he was the same all along is false. Just like they made Aslaug more sympathetic this season. Saying you saw them this way all along just makes you sound like a lying jackass. And why so obnoxious? You sound like you spend a lot of time alone jacking off. Try learning how to socialize with people without being an asshole.
They make them better before killing them, I think it's on purpose it was really noticeable with Aslaug. I'm glad she was at peace with dying and made Lagertha sound and look like a fool with no honor shooting her in the back. Ivar is coming for her and the Saxons.
I loved Vikings but such a shame the creators chose to portray the Anglo Saxons as much less than they were. These are people that moved from Northern Germany and Denmark, were never conquered by the Romans and took over the entire area of southern Britain in a short space of time, they built huge towns and society's and their diaspora created the modern world. In the show they are not fairly represented. They are shown complacent, weak and clueless at times and in reality the Anglo Saxons were the only people on earth to actually bring the Vikings to heel.
Before alfred not really that significant towns that were built by the Anglo saxons That was the romans and the built timber and thatch on top of it or lived and used thwre buildings.
I found it funny how Aethelwulf says "Damn you!" and then says "May he rest in peace."
