They both did screw each other over until the very end... Ragnar by telling Ivar to attack both Aelle and Ecbert and Ecbert by giving claim to Ragnar’s sons over land, while not being King anymore.

I don't see it that way. It's only cuz they respect each other that is why they will continue to try to screw over each other. I think in season 2, they both admit they were corrupt and they enjoy it.

Well in the next season, Ivar and Ubbe I think pick up the slack and if Floki goes to Iceland like it looks like he does in the preview, I wouldn't be surprised if they introduce Erik the Red. After Helga says "our world is coming to an end", I also wouldn't be surprised if they introduce Harald Bluetooth toward the end of the season as well.

Im starting to think they might cover the entirety of the Viking era. Possibly extending it far past even ragnar's sons and to the sons they have. I think it will lose a ton of steam by then since if they chose that route there would be no actual original characters(from s1) left by the end of it. But since they are already going to keep on after Ragnar's death I honestly can't imagine what would make them end it at this point. The main character is dead and the show still goes on to adopt a new main character. Unless it gets cancelled why wouldn't they just continue the same thing over and over? From a story perspective that is. I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to continue after Ragnar dies only to build up a new main character(most likely Ivar) and end it with his death or something like that.
This series could quite literally go on for more than double the number of seasons which have already been released..

Ragnar and Ecbert’s deaths are like what Rick’s flashback dream scenes were in TWD when he paid tribute to everyone in the earlier seasons.
It’s like the show creators knew those were the glory days, and it’s one giant love letter to their stories before their send off
