I just love the dynamic of Ecbert and Ragnar. Mortal enemies but kinda friends who understand and respect each other but will still try and screw each other over
They both did screw each other over until the very end... Ragnar by telling Ivar to attack both Aelle and Ecbert and Ecbert by giving claim to Ragnar’s sons over land, while not being King anymore.
I don't see it that way. It's only cuz they respect each other that is why they will continue to try to screw over each other. I think in season 2, they both admit they were corrupt and they enjoy it.
Well in the next season, Ivar and Ubbe I think pick up the slack and if Floki goes to Iceland like it looks like he does in the preview, I wouldn't be surprised if they introduce Erik the Red. After Helga says "our world is coming to an end", I also wouldn't be surprised if they introduce Harald Bluetooth toward the end of the season as well.

He was full of hypocrisies, full of narcism, full of complexity. A missed character no doubt. But I celebrated when he died, shows how well the actor played him and how well the character was written.
Im starting to think they might cover the entirety of the Viking era. Possibly extending it far past even ragnar's sons and to the sons they have. I think it will lose a ton of steam by then since if they chose that route there would be no actual original characters(from s1) left by the end of it. But since they are already going to keep on after Ragnar's death I honestly can't imagine what would make them end it at this point. The main character is dead and the show still goes on to adopt a new main character. Unless it gets cancelled why wouldn't they just continue the same thing over and over? From a story perspective that is. I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to continue after Ragnar dies only to build up a new main character(most likely Ivar) and end it with his death or something like that. This series could quite literally go on for more than double the number of seasons which have already been released..

Unlike other men would, Ecbert didn't fall, and got to see the results of his life's work, the end of his kingdom, and he got to say goodbye to all people he loved. And in the end, it was him who decided when and how he was going to end the final chapter of his life.
It is much, much more complex and eventually (just as with most things about afterlife in Christianity), it depends on the God...cause, you know, he ain´t our little bitch, he gets to decide.
This show was written so well you wound up caring for characters on both sides, because they found themselves caring for each other in their own special way.
Ragnar didn't have an entire kingdom of Christians to rule. The vikings could pretty much rule themselves, just needed to know where to raid. Ecbert was arguably tougher than ragnar in regard to his responsibilities
The whole time I couldn't figure out if I liked Ecbert or not. Sometimes I did, but other times I really didn't. In the end though, he was very complex, just a really interesting character. I do find I have some fondness for him in the end. He was definitely crafty and manipulative, but he was intelligent and curious. A great character.
Kain Destuto actually you don't need to die in battle to get in Valhalla, just die with honour and no fear. Battle is just one of many ways to die this way.

Ragnar and Ecbert’s deaths are like what Rick’s flashback dream scenes were in TWD when he paid tribute to everyone in the earlier seasons. It’s like the show creators knew those were the glory days, and it’s one giant love letter to their stories before their send off
I felt it most significant that he only smiled when his grandson said he loved him. Through all the power, prestige, and intrigue, the only thing that made him happy was the memory of a loved one. Great lesson.
Interesting that Ragnar's line of "Don't be afraid" mirrors the phrase used by the Christ to his followers when he explains they are to face suffering and death.
Love how he smiled when remembered Alfred saying him "thank you grandpa, I love you" but then he stopped smiling when remembered the moment he was crowned king of Wessex and Mercia. It's like the only person he truly loved, besides Ragnar, was Alfred
This moment/show aside, I hope in the end we all get to hear important moments in our life just like this. Not quite flashing in front of eyes type thing, but the actual voices like in this scene. I just think it would be very beautiful. Nostalgic overload, one last time. 💜💙❤️
The three musketeers: Ragnar, Athelstan, and Ecbert. All three men were visionaries who saw Beyond their cultures and way of life, to peer into the unknown. All three, in the end, were more seekers of knowledge and understanding than seekers of power and wealth.
The only thing I have wrong with this seen is that all of his flashbacks are from within the show, and yet Ecbert was already middle-aged when the Vikings arrived. Does he not have memories from earlier in his life?

When Athelstan died the show became really lame. When Ragnar died the only reason I continued to watch was Ecbert. When Ecbert died the REAL Vikings show died for me. Only reason I sometimes watch another episode is bc Im a bit interested in Bjorns fate or maybe Lagerthas.. but the rest..

I honestly cried when King Ecbert died more than when Ragnar died. With ragnar's death I was more angry at aelle than sad because he died.
