As a bus operator in Los Angeles, we have a system where if they don't have any, that's fine by us [although you should to some degree]. What the MTA in NYC is doing to tackling on those who don't pay their fare is going to create confrontation between the operators and passengers. Essentially, they're saying that they want their operators to get shot as a result.
I'm not referring to any race here, but one thing I've noticed is that blacks in particular never want to pay the fare, but not everyone, be it some people or Queens or Manhattan.
Today I counted 20 people getting on the front and the rear of the bus I was on. What about people that need to exit and cant exit through the front. I can see and agree with not opening the rear door preventing non paying passengers from being able to get seat yet the fare evaders get seats that they didn't pay for. Why cant they have fare monitors on the buses to prevent people from getting on withowut paying.
The operators open both doors to service a bus stop, once that green light above the door is on, the rear doors are unlocked & the customers who are alighting can then push on the doors to open them. What that new policy is stating is that the operators are prohibited activating the switch that automatically opens all doors.. Most of the newer buses are even so sensitive that you only need to get close enough to trigger the sensor that opens the rear doors
So spend more money to get $2.75 out of people? This is an agency that cries broke but has no problem paying beaucoup salaries and overtime. Plus current/retired employees ride free.
@@nb347 are they crying about it or merely pointing out that it wouldn't be worth it to spend money on cops monitoring busses to get back a few bucks per person
Absolutely a mediocre story . So out of all places you do a story on fare beating in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Some people really cannot afford the fare.. But I'll say this the MTA just put their drivers in harms way.. Let's see how long this is going to last..
Well money has to come from somewhere. I think they should make the transportation free, but that means major tax increase. At then end of the day which is better? Major tax increase or pay the fare?
If you cannot afford the fare, you cannot ride the bus. That’s not difficult. Try buying a house, with no money. Come up with some old balderdash about how you can’t afford it. See if they just let you slide.. 😂
Bad idea, just let the back door open. You don't want to reject a aggressive paranoid schizophrenic and have a driver spat, attacked, or killed. It's only less than 4 dollars and the driver life is priceless. So many people carry weapons mainly knives.
MTA needs to put the team of mta police back in place, to check for fair tickets, like they first had when they started with the new Select Bus Service. Less people were getting on from the back door because they knew they would need to show their receipt when asked, or they would be issued a ticket. Put the officers back at the bus stops.
People should stop doing this because the bus drivers needs pay so that they can stay under a roof and also I think that the MTA should add scanners to the rear door and have an alarm if someone gets in from the rear door
In Australia they have these people with like a small fare machine reader that checks our Opal card, and They can check to see if you’ve tapped on the bus or not. And if you haven’t tapped on, or don’t have one, Or don’t have anything that shows that you paid your fair they issue you a ticket right there on the spot. I think the fine starts at like $200. I feel like they should just do this here
The old Newlook fishbowl buses didn't have this problem. Only alighting passengers could use the exit doors by standing on a sensor to open them, and they always shut neatly behind the departing person, and no-one could enter there. That banning use of the exit doors went on in Dublin Ireland for decades.
Why not have ONE MTA police officer or MTA employee on EVERY bus sitting at the back door allowing ONLY exits or those with receipts to board? It would serve double duty to prevent crime and also deter fare evasion. Does that make too much sense to actually be a good idea?
If you want to be hard on fare evasion use a proof of payment system. MTA workers just walk through the bus and check for proof of payment for anyone who has boarded. Also consider making OMNY cards (not debit/credit cards) the only valid proof of payment on all transit in the New York Metropolitan Area. Look at what other cities are doing.

It's kinda weird when you see people wearing expensive clothes and not paying the fare. If you can afford nice clothes the fare shouldn't be a problem.
I like free stuff too. But I feel funny if I don't pay my fare. Some people just
Don't care lol.
It's like having a teenager and you
Paying for everything. If your teen
Doesn't work he or she won't learn
How to be RESPONSIBLE.
It's a matter of principle. Yes metro cards are a bit pricey but isn't everything else.
Now if you're broke that's another story.
All I'm saying is some people will pay and some won't. That's life.
But the people who pay always
Suffer financially because of the
UNBALANCE.
And if the Mta stop wasting money,
Maybe it will get better 🙁
I'm surprised nobody said anything about the same problem with New Jersey Transit
That is not going to work because most who don't pay get on the front
Stop the buses going to those neighborhoods. im sure its peaple the news are afraid to describe. Why should everyone pay for them.
🤡
You obviously don’t have a clue about NYC.
@@LuisAngel-tb2wr lol you're a clown. If they stopped the buses going to ghetto neighborhoods I guarantee you there would be more people paying the fair. But you just part of the problem.
Are you dumb? Lmaoo
People from all walks of life are fare beaters young and elderly
I have have did that numerous times because I don't go far and can't really afford to waste close to 3 buck each way for a 5 minute ride
@Paul Smith disabled
This is not gonna make a difference, they just putting the drivers more at risk
Then they will just walk pass the bus driver without paying 🙄 😒
why no to have free transportacion, medical plus education NY HAVE MONEY FOR IT WE NEED IN USA
MTA should simply make drivers not move the bus until him/her pays the fare.
the problem is that they will get attacked for sure .. mta should make a glass like liquor stores to protect them.
Yeah, that'll work... LOL
What about all the other people on the bus who paid, should they all be late for work?
until they get shot in the face
They gone get beat up lol
I'm not referring to any race here, but one thing I've noticed is that blacks in particular never want to pay the fare, but not everyone, be it some people or Queens or Manhattan.
Today I counted 20 people getting on the front and the rear of the bus I was on.
What about people that need to exit and cant exit through the front.
I can see and agree with not opening the rear door preventing non paying passengers from being able to get seat yet the fare evaders get seats that they didn't pay for.
Why cant they have fare monitors on the buses to prevent people from getting on withowut paying.
Should they get into fights? TAZER fare beaters?
TT...How about volunteering
No thanks I already have a job.
Undercover officer's would be ideal
The operators open both doors to service a bus stop, once that green light above the door is on, the rear doors are unlocked & the customers who are alighting can then push on the doors to open them.
What that new policy is stating is that the operators are prohibited activating the switch that automatically opens all doors..
Most of the newer buses are even so sensitive that you only need to get close enough to trigger the sensor that opens the rear doors
I see people walking on the main door without paying and the driver says nothing lol 😂😂
It's making a big headache for bus operators. They need to assign the fare enforcement agents and MTA police to serve summons.
So spend more money to get $2.75 out of people? This is an agency that cries broke but has no problem paying beaucoup salaries and overtime. Plus current/retired employees ride free.
@@shreddersaurusrex323 are you seriously crying about $2.75, have you taken an Uber lately?
@@nb347 are they crying about it or merely pointing out that it wouldn't be worth it to spend money on cops monitoring busses to get back a few bucks per person
That just makes the freeloaders more angry at the drivers,it puts the drivers more at risk.
Absolutely a mediocre story . So out of all places you do a story on fare beating in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Some people really cannot afford the fare.. But I'll say this the MTA just put their drivers in harms way.. Let's see how long this is going to last..
We all know why they picked that spot
Well money has to come from somewhere. I think they should make the transportation free, but that means major tax increase. At then end of the day which is better? Major tax increase or pay the fare?
If you cannot afford the fare, you cannot ride the bus.
That’s not difficult.
Try buying a house, with no money.
Come up with some old balderdash about how you can’t afford it.
See if they just let you slide.. 😂
If you can't afford the fare you shouldn't be taking the bus...
F... the back door I'm going through the front door and still not paying f.... the MTA
What a great guy 👏🏼😒
You're part of the problem why this country is falling apart
@@stevechulbi8064 and your the reason why where losing our manliness u LGBTQ people
Loser
Stop sending our money to Ukraine and use it on our fares....
Bad idea, just let the back door open. You don't want to reject a aggressive paranoid schizophrenic and have a driver spat, attacked, or killed. It's only less than 4 dollars and the driver life is priceless. So many people carry weapons mainly knives.
I'm a Train Conductor in Glasgow Scotland. Fare dodging happens the world over.
I feel like they should just do this here
They have money for shopping but they dont have money to pay the fare plus they complaint about the service also. cheeky they are
Mr MTA you’ll need to to put just one security at the middle door and problem solved simple 👍
What about busses with three doors?
Look at all the people entering from the rear door and look what they all have in common . LMAO. ☺️
They don't pay the fare yet they'll have the latest I phone
Could easily be fixed by having an undercover cop there 🥱 stop risking the driver's life.
Too much money for the city to pay out. Eric Adams is cheap lol
Of course no summonses were issued last year. MTA had suspended fare collection
I'm extremely BLESSED...I ONLY TAKE THE BUS TWICE A MONTH...VERY LUCKY ...
Hire door security people for the rear if you are losing that much money a day, that is an EASY FIX!!!
The old Newlook fishbowl buses didn't have this problem. Only alighting passengers could use the exit doors by standing on a sensor to open them, and they always shut neatly behind the departing person, and no-one could enter there. That banning use of the exit doors went on in Dublin Ireland for decades.
This is dangerous 😳
Even old people with walkers and canes entering the back of the bus. Lol
Why not have ONE MTA police officer or MTA employee on EVERY bus sitting at the back door allowing ONLY exits or those with receipts to board? It would serve double duty to prevent crime and also deter fare evasion. Does that make too much sense to actually be a good idea?
They need to step up security on each bus that will solve the issue mta have the resources stop playing cheap
Schedule will backup and crime against bus drivers will go up. I hope the MTA is ready for That.
I know a lady that get on the bus and hasn't pay the fare in at least over 15years
