I’m not even in the market for RVs or trucks right now. But damn I love the channel - so much information, and it’s always fun to look inside these things. Here’s to another year 🍻
Really appreciate the fact that you took the time to explain the payload requirements necessary for this trailer. NO OTHER REVIEWER has done this this far. Thank you very much and keep the reviews of affordable trailers coming my friend
You wanna know something funny? I dont own or plan on buying anytime soon, but your videos are so informative that I love to watch them. I've learned a lot. Thx!
JD, You have taught me more than any other channel regarding RV amenities and have we been researching for about 3 years. Not sure if there’s an average but we are at the 3 year mark between RV’s and Tiny houses on wheels. Whenever we have time my husband and I go look on lots for something new. Your info has me looking at everything. Thank you!
Great emphasis on proper pairing of a truck with an appropriately sized trailer focusing on the Achilles heel of payload capacity. Most new to the RV world use the marketing "hype" of "towing capacity" to determine proper fitments. Just read facebook RV forums for a few minutes and realize that many don't broadcast the more important engineering limits of a truck.
Been 5th wheeling for 15+ years. 30 ft is the cut off for most of our favorite spots. Also 30’ is just about the max length you want when driving on switch back roads. 1 ton trucks easily pull them. Hard to go wrong with this class of unit.
I purchased a 2016 Keystone Hideout and have had a lot of big issues (not sure if this is typical of new RV's?). First big problem was a screw not installed all the way on the underside of the main slide (under couch and dinette) which pulled the linoleum flooring out (big old rip). This happened on our first trip with the trailer so it was quite a shock to have it rip a good chunk of flooring out! We took it to the dealer and the manufacturer only cared enough to send flooring to the dealer but wouldn't priority ship the flooring? The dealer then had to tear out cabinetry to replace the floor. Note that the flooring has never been the same, it bubbles in the summer when it warms up and stretches, etc. Second big issue was the connection to city water inside the trailer not being tightened all the way so water slowly leaked and ruined wood in the entertainment center as well as soaked carpets (which we dry vac'd before it did damage). Third issue, the back wall fiberglass started cracking along a seam so they replaced the whole back panel (which again, has never been the same with non-factory seals, etc.). There are other minor issues but buyer beware, they must crank these things out and overlook a lot of Quality Inspections which is sad because it is a nice floor plan, light weight, and reasonable price.
Not sure if a single person would need the bunks in the back. This is an amazing layout for a family with 2-3 kids getting their first 5th wheel, I really live how they were able to fit 2 bathrooms in this one, plenty of 40ft+ models that can't seem to figure this out.
"I don't mean to lecture you on what's safe or not safe" - no, I'm glad you did; the difference between towing capacity and payload capacity is really not discussed anywhere, ever. Someone could really blow their suspension, or worse, by not knowing the difference. So thanks - you might have saved lives.
I love it for the price! I also like that the outdoor shower wand is probably with in reach of the outside kitchen. So although the outside kitchen has no sink, you do still have access to water in that area outside. I do with is had more windows and I don't need the bunks.
When we started looking for our first trailer, I found the info you give on towing do's and donts to be very informative. Never once took your info as lecturing. Keep up the good work.
I agree 100%. His point about the 5th wheel being mounted on a half ton in a parking lot versus being driven down a pothole filled road is very insightful. This is why I subscribe to the channel.
Totally appreciate how you caution your viewers about appropriate truck specs needed to pull this. I can see how some people will say, “I can pull this with my half ton”. The price will definitely draw those kind of buyers in.
I have that camper's big brother, a 308 BHDS. The Hideout line was a great deal for starting out with a 5th wheel and trying out the fulltime life. After almost two years it is still serving us well. It isn't a Montana or Grand Design, but the features Keystone manages to squeeze into these made them a heck of a deal! Our 308 BHDS is just over 13k, our F-350 DRW handles it with ease. Wouldn't feel near as comfortable with a SRW.
This is really nice for the size of it I like this 1 a lot. Would work well for my family. The only downside is you need to move the slide-out to access the fridge if you just stop on the side of the road for a feed
Thankyou for this video. Like the e-mail I sent you and you were so nice to respond. This is perfect, I know alot of the bigger RV's are no problem for me to pull with my truck. But living in the mountains and wanting to visit the state parks deep in the mountains need a smaller 5th wheel. You mentioned some great bumper pulls but after pulling horses and large amounts of hay, I am spoiled to 5th wheel pulling. Thankyou again for what you do.
Your point on payload capacity is well taken. Older pickup trucks might be a challenge. Even the newer models, which have greatly improved payload capacity, shouldn't be pushed beyond the limits. A 2020 RAM 1500 EcoDiesel has a 2300 lb payload, with a max towing capacity of 12560 lbs, but even those numbers are for a short bed regular cab model. As soon as you get a longer bed and/or a larger cab, those numbers suffer.
I like that floor plan. It's a little less spec'd out than I'd normally gravitate towards, but considering the price it's definitely a great value. Good deals can be found if you look for them (or get lucky enough to find them).
This is exactly what I’m looking for in an RV. It has a “mid bunk” or 2 bunk beds for my daughter and my niece and a little bathroom for me but of course I’ll use the shower in the main bathroom. It’s beautiful and not too big is perfect for me.
We paid $28K for our Starcraft Solstice. 3 slides, 2 Schwintech and 1 R&P. 8500LB dry 10.5K gross, 31.5ft long, 1565lb dry pin weight. Surprisingly lot of nice features for the price such as auto level system, ducted air. Tow it with our Titan XD diesel, tows like a dream.
This is has to be one the best 5th wheel camper. I'm not typically a fan of the outside kitchen, but this one is definitely usable, especially if you are wanting to take a quick stop at a rest stop, grab a drink out of the fridge without having to go inside.
No LED lighting? Dump valves not in the same location? Propane tanks on opposite sides of the rig? Doesn't appear to be generator ready? Potential safety issues due to high hitch weight? It's a dream rig, for sure!
Absolutely right about the payload capability of a truck. We’re shopping for a 5W and it’s amazing how fast even the 3/4-ton trucks can have their payload capacity disappear before you’ve counted people and stuff. I’m firmly of the belief that for 5Ws, 1-ton SRWs should be the starting point for tow vehicles. People also can’t rely on the truck line’s top payload figure. They HAVE to research what their specific truck can do, and IMO the safe mindset is to assume your truck can’t safely or legally pull something like this if it’s a half-ton.
Thanks for all your info. Im glad you bring this all up. My husband and i havebt bought ares yet we are juat getting into rvs. And I've learned so much from you
Ironically the simpler interior design of this budget model is much more attractive than most patterns manufacturers put in their mid-level units. I like it a lot. And it leaves budget to upgrade tires, suspension, power generators (solar), and the pinbox.
Many videos keep talking about size and quantity. I think let's start talking about quality built. The industry still uses luan and wood frame when alternative exist to have better built.
I have a hideout 299rlds. It pulls very nice. Some minor things but overall very good trailer. Bathroom is very nice. Ours has a center island. I recommend a hideout.

the f150 can come with a 3000lb payload package and is rated to tow 10,000lb 5th wheel trailers. The ram 2500 with a cummins only has like 1900lbs of payload

No, please, DO tell us the safety issues, those of us considering going to a towable from a DP appreciate it... this MAY be the one that makes me try a fifth wheel.
You should expand on this series of affordable fifth wheels
Totally agree with what he said ^^^^^^.
Yes Please.
How about small fifth wheel, but full time for a couple or single.
That would be a short series which is probably why no one does it.
Yup.. ^^^^^

I'm thinking about doing just that! Hopefully, they offer one without the bunk beds. It'd be perfect without those.
You don’t want a floor layout that wastes space with a bunkhouse if you’re single unless you’re planning on having a lot of guests stay over
