    How do you remove the right crank arm from the gears? Or is that arm not replaceable?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  2 місяці тому

      It depends on the age and model of crank. Most modern versions are not replaceable, but any bike can be upgraded to a newer design that has replaceable gears - chainrings - sprockets - Etc.

    How do we "not strip the threads"? I have been pulling taper cranks off for 40 years, stripped only one, an Alivio in 2009. But since the pandemic 3 out 4 of the last cranks pulled stripped the threads. I think the cranks aluminum has gotten so soft that it can't support the pressure of a crank puller. I am in extreme fear now when pulling a crank. Once threads are stripped we are talking a long project of cutting a slot or two to relieve the taper pressure and get the crank off without damaging the spindle. I have two bikes now that came from the factory with loose bottom bracket cups, and I can't get to them because both have stripped cranks. ARRRRGGGG!!!!! From now on I will ride a crank until the arm is loose, but this is not ideal either. It can take weeks of riding before it breaks loose from pedaling and damaging a good crank arm can happen. I have used the sprays for working through any corrosion, but I think the tapers are too tight for the spray to penetrate. I have complete changed my tools for removal using a socket ratchet with a long socket extension so I can use two hands when tightening the tool bolt, this way there is no lateral pressure on the threads just the twisting forward force. But this still isn't helping. What to do...??>>>...? My tool is functioning perfectly the threads are smooth and easy to turn. I know about hidden washers that can be behind a bolt, but my cranks are Shimano Altus, Tourney, Alivio (older Alivio not octalink), Suntour, and back in the 80s Campagnolo Super Record.

    why couldnt you tell us which cranks you removed? youve got all the park tool #s but didnt include the cranks. thanks for the video but i dont see the point in leaving that out. are all square taper cranks the exact same size?

      It's a basic low end Shimano crank. I'm not sure of the exact model, but it was on my daughters bike. Did you not notice the Shimano logo on the crank arm? In a nutshell, yes all square taper cranks come off in the same manner. Or, another way of putting it, the same type of crank puller is used. Some use a 14 or 15mm socket to remove/install a bolt, some spindles have a threaded stud that use a nut, and most modern type have a bolt with a 8mm hex or Allen wrench for removal. Some Shimano cranks have an extracting bolt that doesn't require a tool, just loosen the bolt and the crank comes off. 99% of all square taper cranks require a crank puller though. Hopefully that clears up some confusion?

      Use a Unior crank puller that might work, some kind of pulley puller tool, a pickle fork, or start cutting!

      I don't know. I guess that's why this system is not used any more? It was a big improvement on the old cotter pin type cranks, but technology just keeps evolving, and things get easier for the consumer and the mechanic. Believe it or not, lots of folks out there still believe this was the best system for bicycles, and think any improvements from this is just "marketing".

    Thanks for the memories. I remember pulling those types of cranks off my bikes years back. Still have that Park crank puller which I'll never use again.

    nonsense. if they stuck they stuck. I also broke an automotive puller and it's still stuck fast. the real answer.. grease on assembly. you have no control over that.

    Don't waste your time or money with the budget crank puller. It's not made well enough to deal with the amount of force required to remove the crank arm.
