    I always find it useful to watch a video before removing the bottom bracket just to jog my memory on how to do it, especially regarding what unscrews clockwise, I don't think I'll ever remember that without checking first 😁 at least with experience things get easier.
    I'll always remember the first time I tried to remove the BB and how stiff the drive side was to remove, bought about 3 or 4 different tools off Amazon, ended up buying a clamp to hold the socket and ratchet in place as in my experience it can easily slip out of the BB splines when applying force.

    Good tip; If you accidently strip your threads. Use a bearing/gear pulley, probably the best alternative method of removing stubborn square taper cranks!

    • @dbattleaxe
      @dbattleaxe Рік тому

      It also helps to have a high quality puller tool. I tried to remove mine with a low quality one that came with a tool kit and half the threads on the puller and crank ended up being stripped. Tried the gear puller and couldn't get enough force. Luckily a higher quality puller was able to engage the remaining threads. My crank was on there so tightly that I had to use a hammer on my wrench to get it to turn. The amount of force with the mechanical advantage on the screw must have been ridiculous. I'd been hit by a car on my crank several years before and it must have forced the crank up the taper much harder than it should have been. Sometimes you can get buy with cheap tools, but this is one tool where using a cheap one can cause permanent damage and a major headache, so I highly recommend the few dollars extra for one made with better harder steel.

    In one cheapo kids bike i was parting out the extractor ripped the threads from the sprocket side crank. I wasn't even using much torque on it. I don't know what crappy alloy it was but it just gave out. Well i paid pennies for the entire bike and still got the frame parts i wanted for my project so not that big of a loss.

    Hi hoping you can help I have whats looks like much and such the same set up except the pedals fit via multi spline (seems rare as cant find a video on exact set up all be it it is still shimano)should the bottom bracket nuts still be the same principle? got the non drive side off and it was like your one plastic but the drive side ones very very tight tried it both ways can you possibly confirm from what i said if it should be anti clockwise (turn right to slacken) like your one here? (presuming you can picture the exact bottom bracket/pedal fitment set up I am talking about) ?

    Found this very helpful, my bike is making what I can only describe as a “clunk” noise coming from my left side that only happens when I put power into it when going up hill, I’ve swapped out my pedals and regreased my crank bolts, noise is still there, I’m thinking something might be loose with my bottom bracket, but when I pull and push on my cranks, there is no wriggle or give, so it’s not obviously loose.
    Think it’s new bottom bracket time?

      So I just got back from the bike shop and asked the same question.
      -8mm Hex tool
      -crank puller
      -bottom bracket remover
      There may be some variance in tool size depending on your bikes specs. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      But for a standard square tapered BB, these are all the tools you need.
      Plus some bike grease.
      Hope this helps.

    One thing he didn't point out is that you need to use the right crank puller because there are two sizes. The inner piece needs to fit inside the square hole of the crank to push against the square rod of the bottom bracket.

      Gavin, the plastic nut on the non drive side is only supposed to be tightened to between 0.7 - 1.5nm so basically just nipped up, the two hex bolts on the crank arm are then tightened to hold the arm in place. If you over tighten the plastic nut it will cause load on the bearings and they will feel tight to turn by hand. Hope that helps!!
