  • My 1+ Year Review of the Feelfree Lure 13.5 Fishing Kayak.
    This kayak came to me in an odd way. I won it. I took possession of kayak in September 2016 and immediately loved it. The feature rich kayak had a ton of great things about it, most notable was it's stability. The Feelfree Lure 13.5 is 13 and half feet long and 36 inches wide which makes it great for standing and fishing. As far as fishing goes, the ability to stand is a game changer.
    The kayak comes with a pretty decent seat, which has had some issues, but overall is comfortable. It also comes with a Sonar Pod that makes mounting a fish finder with a transducer a breeze. It has a built in cooler and cutting board, as well as ample storage.
    The Feelfree Lure 13.5 does not come with a rudder but it is pre-plumbed for the wiring which makes installing the rudder fairly easy. In my opinion the rudder is a must, especially for fishing in windy condition.
    I can highly recommend the Feelfree Lure 13.5 to anyone who is in the market for a paddle craft. Especially the big guys out there like myself who like stability and the ability to stand while fishing.
    You can buy this kayak on amazon but I do recommend test paddling before you do. Check out more specs, reviews, etc here - amzn.to/2hVKEj4

    Great video! I have the 11.5 and I still have some discomfort on standing up but I think it's because I'm still new to kayak fishing in the standing up position it Is just a whole new experience for me. But I do like my kayak still can't wait till I can get into a Hoibe.

      +YAKKin TV thanks! Standing does take some getting used to and the 13.5 is a little bit more stable than the 11.5 but you should be able to do it. You have to do it for a bit in order to get comfortable with it. Thanks for watching!

    Great Review! Thank you!
    Looking for info/opinions:
    So, 3 of us are getting our firsr yaks next year. All in our 50s. One has been selected - FF Moken 10.5 for a female friend of mine
    The other 2 will be for big boys. 6 foot 300 and 6-2 325. 85% of the time will be for rec use on flat calm water w minimal current if any. The other 15% - maybe some stationary fishing - anchored.
    We want paddle yaks only. Since we need minimum #500 capacity, and reviewed every single yak made, here was our original cut down list:
    The Lure 13.5 V2
    Old Town Sportsman
    Vanhunks Elite Pro Angler
    Vibe Sea Ghost 130
    Now down to:
    The Lure and the Sea Ghost
    After taking hull, seat, and user weight and subtracting it from the max, the Sea Ghost had a lot more usable weight remaing.
    That being said, take me for example -with the Lure Id have #65 pounds left to reach capacity.
    Usually id just have a drink cooler, beach towel, and some misc - say a total of #20
    And if fishing maybe #30.
    Will I be stable leisurely paddling, sitting and fishing, just normal yak usage? Or will I be at the water line?
    We'll be on no rough water, no batteries and alike. Just simple use but need fishing yak for weight.
    Which would you choose and why? I spec'd everything out that you can but it's gonna be in the 20s next week and trying them anytime soon is not an option....for like 4 or 5 months.
    Any and all info greatly appreciated.
    Thanks again for the great review and happy paddling.
    😂

    I agree 100% with almost everything. Great video. For those viewing I've also had my feelfree for a while (2 years) and I can vouch for the accuracy of this review. I am 6'3" 265 lbs and this kayak will take care of you on the water. I absolutely love the seat, I got mine dialed in right away and have never had issues (knock on wood) I also typically fish for 6-8 hours per trip. I also am disillusioned with the tease concerning their overdrive system (motor /pedal system) although they recently published pictures of the first batch packaged and ready for delivery. Great video Chris, thank you for taking the time to make this review.

    Thanks Chris! Your missing a part on your track adaptors. Do you have the little rubber washers? That helps them from knocking around like that. If you need some I got them for you. Awesome honest review. God I hope that pedal drive gets here soon. They said they are assembling drives as we speak for our first order. Not holding my breath, but very very hopeful. The ones I demoed at Donner Lake two months ago was bad ass, and will be a real game changer for Lure owners.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому

      Yeah, I've actually had a few of those wear out or get lost. You are right though, those do help them from knocking around for sure. Man I really hope those pedal drives release soon too. Lots of my fellow Lure owners are switching out to another brand do get into a Peddle Drive kayak. Most of them were fine waiting awhile but now they feel like they haven't been upfront about stuff and are deciding to make a switch. Personally I am gonna stick it out with my paddle for a bit, who knows though, I might change my mind at some point. Thanks for watching, need to get back into the shop and chat a bit one of these days!

      Wendell & Sons I sent them an email as well and got a reply that they had “run into a minor hiccup and plan to release the first ones in early December” that was in late October. Great review. My wife and I fell in love with kayak fishing and we're now in the market for two kayaks. I like what Jackson is putting out, but I can't swallow the price for two yaks. I'm considering the Vibe Sea Ghost 130 or possibly the Feel Free. Reviews like this are helpful. Thanks again.

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review! At the moment the only pedal kayak I've ever been in was a Hobie (I think it was an Outback). I've been researching them though and I talk to a lot of guys about this topic and if I was going to get into a Pedal Kayak for myself I would be looking at Hobie and Native. They both seem to have the pedal drive down pretty good. Hope that helps!

    Hey Chris. Just found your channel. Great stuff. I am in the market for a new kayak. If you had to choose, would you buy the FF or the Bonafide? Still doing some research to see what I think I want.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому

      Man that is tough. Both are really nice kayaks. For me and the varied types of fishing I do I would stick with my Feelfree Lure 13.5 but it would be a tough decision. The Bonafide has some really really nice features. My suggestion would be go try to paddle both for 1/2 hour to an hour before you purchase one.

  • @kinetikk9125
    @kinetikk9125 6 років тому

    Hey Chris, great video!!! I'm in the market to purchase my first kayak and I've landed on this as my first choice. I live in Colorado and wind is my primary concern. This will be a fishing vessel for me. With my lack of experience, I'm finding it hard to pull the trigger on just one kayak. What would you recommend? Stability is the biggest factor, Colorado water isn't known for it's prime swimming water, but I would also like the ability to paddle back to shore swiftly if I need to when the storms roll in unexpectedly like they always do in the high Rockies.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому

      This is a solid option man. It isn't the fastest kayak but once you get used to it, it really isn't that bad. I've done some long sustained paddles in this rig. I think the stability and the comfort of the gravity seat outweigh the lack of a high top speed. Also, be sure to get a rudder, I fish in windy conditions a lot and the rudder is key.

    If you use the aftermarket track adaptors, I use scotch tape to tape the aftermarket adaptor to the metal track lock from the bottom side only. Then slip the taped pieces into the track before screwing in your attachment. It seems to work well for me. I don't use the little washers or mess with rocking the adaptor back and forth with the screw-on attachment piece hoping to get it into the track because that can be very frustrating.

      First off thanks for watching. I have only been in one peddle drive kayak, that was a Hobie Outback that I borrowed from a friend while fishing in North Carolina. I was in it for over 10 hours and I must say it was a nice set up. With that said, Hobie's have their faults too. I have heard that the Native and Wilderness Systems peddle kayaks are pretty sweet, I think that would be 3 good brands to start your search with.

      I think the AirPro Max seats that Wilderness Systems uses are pretty comfortable and they provide good back support. Don't get me wrong though, I really really like the seat in the Lure's, some people that have back issues though don't. I hear it is because the seat back is low. Thanks for watching and asking the question!

      +daddysealtx Jackson you would need to put a liner in it because there is a drainage hole in that front little cooler area. If you are thinking a live well for Bass it would also be too small. Hope that helps.

      Good question... I prefer an adjustable paddle... I believe the one I have is 225-240. The adjustment is nice because if I am in the high seating position I can adjust longer. When I'm paddling distance I'm sitting low, then when I slow down to fish I put the seat up. Thanks for watching!

Anyway your video was awesome lotta information so agree with those proprietary crap I don’t know why a company just can’t stand by their product alone hope their customers out by installing customer friendly stuff yes stuff......
    Thanks 🙏

      I posted a review of the 2019 Hobie Outback (pedal drive) earlier this year. They are nice boats, a little expensive though. With that said, I still own my Lure and use it from time to time.

    Hi i just looked at this video review after i got my Feel Free 11,5 and it is a great Review.
    My Feel Free have an electrical motor in the box that you have the fish-finder and the same roder as you.
    That is an amazing gear to have.
    My fish-finder display is still in that middle box and the sensor on a flex arm at the side.
    Paddle-drive is in my opinion way to expensive its like a bad joke that pricing?
    My battery is stored in the front compartment and holds charge for at least 8h.
    excuse for bad English i am from Sweden hmm.

    Ok so will you continue to use it? And what is your ideal kayak of choice.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +1

      First, thanks for watching. Yes I will continue to use it, it is a great kayak. The ideal kayak all depends on how you use it. This is a bit long for small waters (ponds, tight spots) but is great for larger bodies of water like the California Delta or lakes. Having a peddle drive would be nice for some areas but a peddle kayak wouldn't work for the rivers that I run occasionally. For me, this kayak kind of is the best, most well rounded for how I fish. Hope that helps.

      +toolman those pedal units are in hot demand so I'm not sure if that could/would happen. If you were to get one you would most likely put the transducer over the side on a swing arm mounted to the unitrack, and your screen would also mount to the track.

    UPDATE: FEELFREE OVERDRIVE
    Welcome to the Feelfree Overdrive system - the modern evolution of pedal powered kayak propulsion technology. Designed to be retro-fittable on the Feelfree Lure 11.5 and 13.5, the Overdrive is a one of kind system designed to offer effortless speed, ease of use and accessibility. The Overdrive is expected to available Winter of 2018. Updates and other information will be posted here. Stay tuned, the modern evolution of pedal powered propulsion has just begun!
    If it gets into March without a peddle drive I’m selling my 13.5. This is getting ridiculous!

      Hey, I did get a pedal drive. I haven't tried fly-fishing from it, it seems like managing the fly line would be a nightmare! I don't want to discourage you from trying it though, maybe having a bucket or basket for striping line into would be helpful.

    Hi Chris I follow you and Matt on both UA-cam and instagram. My name on instagram is kayakfishingpapa I currently own a tamarack angler from Walmart and a hand me down pelican I purchased from a friend. I started kayaking probably 3 years ago and started fishing almost 2 years ago and I’ve been dreaming about a blue camo 13.5 lure with overdrive for about a year now. I got a quote about a week ago for all the things I want on it. 2600 but dan from Headwaters just did a video saying that you can actually upgrade to a dorado seat now. So I’m totally wanting that upgrade. I’m hoping to have it within the next month or two. Anyway I know both you and Matt have moved on to other boats and I’m asking you because Matt had an 11.5. Am I making a good choice. I feel if I got a Hobie it would a pro angler but that’s more than I am prepared to spend. I really like the lure because I’m 49 and not that nimble anymore so stability and comfort are my 2 biggest concerns. I’m like you if I go out I’ll be on the water from sun up till sun down and in a tamarack angler all I can say is when I’m done I can barely move. So again I’m prepared to spend approximately 2500. Is there a better option in your opinion. Curious if you had no boat and had under 3000 to spend and comfort and stability was your biggest concern what would you pick. I know I could go to Headwaters boat house and demo whatever but I’m working two jobs right now and that’s further than I would like to drive. Although I do plan to purchase my yak from them. Thanks for any input. And I hope when I get my new kayak to hang out with you and Matt sometime.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  5 років тому

      Hmmmm. So I think that the Lure with the Overdrive Retrofit has some problems. The steering control that they came up with a mess. Other than that it isn't a bad boat at all. Have you thought about looking for a used kayak? I'm not trying to turn you off from the Lure series kayaks, they are great for what they are (Very Stable paddling kayaks) but I do see used Titans in that price range from time to time. Also, I still own my Lure 13.5, haven't used it a ton lately but its still a great kayak.

      in my opinion the Feelfree is made a little better, it is more stable, and has a better seat. The Big Fish 120 is less expensive and faster. I have a review of the big fish 120 somewhere on my channel.
