Big Fish 120 Overview - NEW Fishing Kayak from 3 Waters Kayaks

  • Over the past month I've had the opportunity to paddle and test out the NEW Fishing Kayak from 3 Waters Kayaks, the Big Fish 120. The Big Fish 120 boasts quite a few features from integrated rod storage to a nice removable pod that allows for clean, through hull mounting of Fishfinders and Transducers. It also has an interested hull design.
    The Big Fish 120 on Amazon - amzn.to/2Dafk5B - Suggest paddling before buying and purchasing from a local dealer but if you don't have one near you this link may help.
    The Hull on the 3 Waters Kayak is called a Cathedral Style Hull. The 12 Foot Kayak is 36 inches wide and while that would usually mean it is fairly slow it actually is quite fast. Typically the trade off for speed is stability but the hull design, similar in ways to a catamaran, provides great secondary stability.
    The Big Fish 120 from 3 Waters Kayaks is fast, stable, and affordable at just under $1000 BUT you will need a rudder so plan on purchasing one.
    Thank you to Headwaters Kayak in Lodi CA for setting up the demo. Check out their UA-cam page here for more kayak related content. / @headwaterskayak

    Sorry for the wave slapping noise... had to work with what I had at the time and that was constant waves. Overall I like this kayak and think it is a great option for someone looking for their first kayak. It is fast, stable, and has some really cool features! Thanks Headwaters for the demo and nicely done to the folks at 3Waters Kayaks.

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    When it came time to upgrade my kayak a year ago, this was one of the few videos on the Big Fish that lead me to buying my own. One of the best looking rigs in my opinion. It runs that nice broad rudder, 2x 24lb motors tucked neatly underneath with the lithium battery powering them and the sounder in the removable pod. Love it! Great video.

    I think they’re sweet! It’s actually the same boat as the Cabelas Advantage Angler 120 that’s been out for about 3-4 years now. So it’s not a new design but new to feelfree and I really enjoy the new colors.

    Great review Chris!
    Bought this Kayak back in March of '19, I Love it!! Very stable, sits high, the seat is easily good for 6 hours of paddling.
    It weighs in at 95 or so Lbs., but I can easily load it into the back of my F-150 by myself.
    The handles are molded into the ends and are super strong.
    I have had it out at least a dozen times on rivers, and a few times fishing and just paddling on Lake Superior.
    Getting it rigged up this winter with anything I can think to put on it.
    Going to have it out on the big lake as soon as the ice breaks up in the spring.

    The seat! When you flip it back you will see 2 "rod leash" bungees. Those will go back to the stern eye clips to hold the seat in the flipped up position. Then you notice the 2 straps in the side storage. That's to hold the seat from pushing back as you sit your butt on the edge when standing. Also, the groves in the pod are made to hold 4 3600 tackle boxes. Same as the storage on the side of the seat.

    A nice honest review, thanks. But the Vibe SG Ghost, 110 or 130, still seems the better value and has better performance.

    • @HeadwatersKayak
      @HeadwatersKayak 6 років тому +3

      Michael Uchida I agree but not for a bigger guy. Still this boat with a Rudder would be a better investment IMO. Plastic is way more burly.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +2

      +Michael Uchida yes as Headwaters already commented the Vibe SG 110 is somewhat uncomfortable for larger folks. I paddled that one for 6 months and had a blast with it. The build quality on the Big Fish is slightly better in my opinion as well. Don't get me wrong though, the SG 110 is a great little kayak I just think big dudes like myself or larger will be more comfortable in the Big Fish.

    • @Outwestwithchris1

    The irony is that this Kayak has been sold under the Cabelas "Advanced Angler" name plate since 2016. Much like many high end bicycles, Kayaks are made by Asian companies and the rebranded under various names by Westwrn Companies. I paid $799 for this Kayak from Cabelas and that included a paddle.

    Great review. I ended up purchasing this yak after doing much research and your review helped a lot. After taking it out a handful of times I added the rudder. It is not needed but I'd highly suggest on getting one. Kayak is extremely stable and can easily handle a guy my size with plenty of gear. I'm 6'3" and 320 pounds. Yes I can stand in it too. The only knocks on it are the lack of access to the hull, for some the weight of the boat, (I haven't had a problem with that) and the fact that the seat is not easily removable. Also the price on the 3 waters website as of me writing this is $809 Its hard to beat that deal. I got mine for $899 a little over a month ago. :( PS The rudder is also priced at 160$ now so for $1000 you can get if fully set up.

    I'm currently in the market for a starter kayak and this one had caught my eye because the company is based locally here in NC. One question that wasn't covered:. Seat comfort. I'm partially disabled, so it's a major purchase requirement for me.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +1

      Seat comfort is going to be different for everyone so that is tough for me to really elaborate on. It was comfortable for me. I did a few trips that were 6 hours and had no problems. My suggest would be to try to rent one for a day and really test it out, especially because if you were to get the wrong one it could potentially ruin your whole purchase. Hope that helps!

      Tempting but no, a buddy of mine is though. He works at Gander Outdoors. I'm pretty sure he's bringing one of these home. I don't like the hatch issue. There's always condensation build up or little traces of water get inside SOT kayaks sometimes. I like to just open a hatch and wipe it out or let it evaporate. Using the drain as the only way get water out doesn't appeal to me. Not a deal breaker though.

    I've owned mine for 18 months. One of the biggest selling points is the stability and room to stand up. I did this once and satisfied myself with staying sit (I'm 6'2"). It's not as tippy as a canoe but it's certainly doesn't have paddle board-like stability. My biggest gripe is the weight. The design of the kayak makes the supposed 100lbs feel like 130lbs. Still waiting to see a video of a single person trying put this on the top of an SUV. Anywhere off the water and this kayak is a handful. And there are those wasted design elements like the silly rod tip protectors, a very shallow cup holder out of reach and easy to knock over, storage around and under the seat that's very difficult to get to, hardly an flat surfaces to add attachments, front and rear wells that are out of reach once on the water (unless you want to risk a swim), none of the decks drain well into the scuppers, poorly shaped side handles that are not at a balancing point, a floor mat that's a bad joke, tri-hull that greatly inhibits draining the water unless you stand the kayak on end (which I have and it still didn't get fully drained). This is nit-picky stuff and, I admit, part of the fun might be fixing this or customizing your kayak. If they cut this down to 65-75lbs I could probably work around the rest. Once on the water, it's a pretty good, quality kayak. I just need someone to load it and unload it for me.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  4 роки тому +1

      Sometimes nitpicky critiques offer the best feedback. I don't necessarily agree with every point you make but I agree with several of them. This is not the perfect kayak... I'm still trying to figure out if that is something that even exists.

    Awesome review!! How do you compare it to your lure 13.5 as far as speed and tracking and stability?

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +1

      +bubbajack80 hey, thanks for watching. Compared to the Lure 13.5 it is noticeably faster. Tracking (without rudder) is similar and I would give the stability nod to the Lure, with the main reason bring that the primary stability on the Lure is better (part of the reason its a tank to paddle) but you would have to try pretty hard to roll the Big Fish because the secondary stability is insane.

    From what I have read up on turning left or right means you have a ballast issue...had the same problem on my feelfree when I first went out, but fixed it the next day when I added weight to the bow hatch.

    How do you feel like the durability of the hull is? I fish rivers a lot, so hitting rocks/scraping the bottom is not uncommon. I worry about it not being a flat bottom to disperse the weight when that happens.

    The 120 looks like a good place to start. I'm curious what the optimal paddle length would be for this kayak? We are also interested in a power drive system like the Bixby or Torqueedo. Any advice would be appreciated!!!

    Considering the Lure 13.5 or this 3 Waters. Which would you recommend? I have your build and really like the stability to stand up in the Lure, but the Lure seems like it tracks slow from what I’ve seen. Thoughts between these 2?

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому

      The Lure us the better of the 2. The seat in the Lure is the most comfortable seat I have ever sat in for a kayak. The big fish is faster but I can get my Lure 13.5 moving pretty good. Just be sure to add the rudder on both.

    Hey chris question, i tried the lure 13.5, big fish 120 and nucanoe frontier 12 and i think i eliminated the nucanoe , but torn im 6ft3in and 330lbs and worried about capacity with big fish it didn't have supper plugs and water occasionally came thru and soaked my azz lol, but the big fish seemed faster then the lure IMO, i did notice the left side pull after and sometimes during paddling id have to paddle 3 times on left to keep straight, what do you think is the better value and may be better for someone my size? Or other kayaks for my size ? Thanks!

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +1

      I think overall the 13.5 is the better kayak and would probably better for you. I think you will for way more stable in the Lure, and with the gravity seat in the lure, probably more comfortable as well. Hope that helps!

      @@Outwestwithchris1 Same reply as before, you cannot compare so the review is not very useful. Not getting on you, but we see all these reviews, but no one really has a recommendation unless they are paid or sponsored, then it is not a valid opinion. I could not buy this based on a few UA-cam reviews. Also, most of us cannot paddle before we buy. Would be good to do, but may only be for 10% of the crowd.

  • @MrLawnart

    I bought this POS after many many hours of reviews and videos praising it. It's stable and that's about it for the pros. Very poorly made. The seat for one kind of leans downward and I slide off and the back rest is just absolutely horrible and broke on my very first time out. I strapped it on my trailer and had to loosely strap it because the plastic just crushes. The pods not water tight in any way and it definitely tracks left hard I almost paddle one handed. I just wish my sea ghost 130 had this hull design.

  • @chriscastillo6299

    What's the purpose of the rudder?

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +1

      The rudder would help with tracking, keeping the bow of the kayak pointed in the right direction. Also a rudder really helps in the wind to keep the kayak from turning on its own while drifting in the wind.

    • @vybo8921
      @vybo8921 5 років тому

      @@Outwestwithchris1 Hey all. Almost every very stable fishing Kayak, all recommend a rudder. Just warning newbies, I have not seen one yet that is super stable that has not. Any wind and you are going to be out of breath and flabbie arms. OK, so, the solution would be for manufacturers to include them at the same cost. That would bring up more sales and more on the water. Nuff said. But no, to get more money out of us SAPS, they make you buy one for 100-200 dollars. Greedy SOB's. Remember, it is a piece of plastic.

    I'm 5'8 285lbs. Im having a hard time choosing between the big fish 120 and the bonafide ss127. Is the bonafide really worth $600 more? Which is more durable and stable and the best bang for the price they are asking?please help want a kayak asap. I tried the pelican enforcer 100x and can't fish out of it. It's extremely tippy and I've already flipped it does not feel comfortable.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому +1

      So both are good boats right off the bat. The Bonafide is more refined and has more features overall. The rod staging works way better on the Bonafide than the Big Fish. The bonafide is probably a little more stable and slightly faster but has a little bit thinner walls (from what I can tell). Both need a rudder if you fish in windy conditions in my opinion, the rudder for the Big Fish looks really nice.
      Bottom line is Both will work, just need to decide on features you want. If you can get both out on the water for a test paddle I highly recommend it.

    • @robkelley1311
      @robkelley1311 6 років тому

      Out West with Chris that's the thing. Kayak fishing isn't popular in my area and there are no independent kayak watersport shops. So all I can do is watch as many UA-cam videos as I can. I saw one guy with the cabelas version of the big fish 120 and he let me test ride it and I liked it but don't have anything to compare except the pelican enforcer in which was a bad experience. See I would have thought the BF120 would be more stable than the bonafide because of the weight, thickness of material and the wider beam. I felt like I was in a tank on the cabelas. But I don't know if I would regret getting the BF120 over the bonafide. I don't think I'll ever see anyone in a bonafide around here. Id also like to see how the atak 120 compares.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому

      I tested an Atac a few years ago and those are super stable. But yeah, the difference in stability between the SS127 and the BF120 isnt huge.
      Have you looked at the Feelfree Lure 11.5 or 13.5 kayaks? My main kayak is a Lure 13.5 and it has an amazing seat and is the most stable kayak I have fished off of.

    • @robkelley1311
      @robkelley1311 6 років тому

      Out West with Chris I feel like the 13.5 lure is too big for me. The lure 11.5 is really close to the bonafide price. This is my first kayak I just want to make The right choice. I don't know if. I should just start out with the cheaper big fish 120 or just jump to the bonafide. I am a bass fisherman.

    • @Outwestwithchris1
      @Outwestwithchris1  6 років тому

      Its a tough decision. I cant honestly say I know the right answer man and I am not going to steer you towards one or the other like some folks who are sponsored by these companies.
      To me it boils down to this, if buying the SS127 is gonna leave you cash strapped then get the big fish, if money isn't an issue get the SS127. Worst case scenario is you fish it for a season and then sell it to try something new, kayaks hold their value fairly well, especially in areas that don't have a ton of options.

      I haven't fished around a Trident before but I have used a Tarpon 140. It's not as fast as the 140 is but for as wide and stable as it is it is pretty fast. The new Bonafides are a little faster than the Big Fish 120's.
