    Your mot station is bent, I would be highly suspicious of them, failing it on the track rod end and an oil leak however missing the strut bolts loose and failing it on drivers side beam pattern having no kick up when it’s not a mot requirement anymore is abit wrong, this place is looking for work and is taking advantage of people, find a new place my friend, (advise from a tester)

    • @ashleygriffiths441

      Mansell Boxing - kick up on the passenger side headlight is required, drivers side headlight does not have to have kick up

    • @jack6661
      @jack6661 6 років тому +2

      Mansell Boxing - I realise I have worded that quite badly, the kick up is required by law on the passenger side for uk vehicles, however the drivers side headlight does not require kick up - many vehicles such a Vw polos, tiguans, Audi a1’s etc do not have kick up on the drivers headlamp from factory, many garages con people into having bulbs / headlights replaced only to find out that the beam pattern is the same, once again you are correct kick up is required on the passenger side for uk vehicles but is not a legal requirement for the drivers side 👍🏻

      Ain't the subframe in the way on theses cars so the engine maybe quicker to remove.

    • @cardude5323
      @cardude5323 6 років тому

      Yes is is. However its doable without removing the subframe. But for the sake of 6 bolts and a wire ide drop the subframe. But deffinately leave the engine in place on a engine brace.

    If it is the rear main seal (crankshaft seal) you don’t need the engine out, just take the gearbox off so you can take the clutch and flywheel off and it’s right there

      John Fittis yes I have taken one out, if your doing it at home on axle stands I would recommend getting someone to help, makes life a lot easier lifting the box off and on haha, I would say do it but take your time, i would make sure your not needing it the next day incase something goes wrong and it end up carrying on into the next day too, but no you don’t need the engine out, it’s definitely easier just taking the box off

    Put the kettle on, make yourself a brew. Then whip the sockets and spanners out and get cracking. You've bought the seal anyway, so you were always prepared to do it, so really.. asking us for an opinion is a bit moot. I just think you've had your hopes dashed of a quick and easy fix and you just need a boost to lift your spirits to keep going.
    It'll provide good quality content for the channel too and because I can't get out and do stuff to my own car at the moment (there are good reasons) watching you get messy with cars (even though I'm not a Vauxhall fan boy) is really good viewing.
    I'd offer to give you a hand if I were closer but alas this comment will have to suffice for now.
    Ultimately the decision is yours.
    Best of luck to you mate.

    I have a Chevy Sonic with a 1.8l ecotech engine and an F17 manual transmission. I do all the work on my car and it has about 230,000 miles and going strong. Don't give up on your Corsa. It seems to be a similar make to my car and I love my car. In Florida we don't have to take our cars for inspections as compared to some other states. I think you may have a rear main seal leak, that's an easy fix. I was surprised to see a gasket for the oil pan because mines have thick silicon sealant in the pan from the factory.

    Also check your valve cover gasket to see if it is leaking. If it has that diaphragm pcv system and it fails it could cause accumulation of blowby gases not venting to the intake for reburn. This pressure buildup will cause oil leak(s).

    Take the gearbox off to do the rear main. That way you can support the engine and run it with the gearbox off to actually check the job is sorted. Plus it could be a core plug, Volvo XC90 had a common problem with a plastic core plug that would pop out. Gearbox off to change a 5quid part. Print a copy of the MOT standards, its very clear cut on pass and fail, how to test for that item etc, very handy for pre mot checks.

    As a Corsa c owner myself I can relate to every single word you said. I have 1 liter thing and invested more then it costs right now. Butt... So many good memories are connected to this little fella. I can't help myself but just keep this car alive. Now where it almost became worthless: gloves are of baby! I can do things that don't make any sense and I will. Sportseats are waiting to be fit, rear axle from a gsi/sri is waiting to for other parts. The interior will get a rework... I mean you get the idea. That's the thing about these corsas: they slowly become your "pets" when own them for a long time. Did I go completely mad with that claim? Who cares I love that thing and I will keep it going. Fix it and enjoy it.
    Edit: I had exactly the same issue. It is a spot where they like to leak oil. I spend 300 euro on repairs and everybody told me that it (corsa) will fall apart when I drive it to russia. What happend when I did? Nothing. It drove on the worst roads imaginable, drank the worst petrol, rammed and wrecked two other cars (bandits) and it did give a damn about it. It drove us back and still goes strong. But after those bandits it slowly needs a new stearing rack.

    James, I'd be pissed off at the prospect of having to take the engine out too. There's 2 good reasons to get it sorted. It is content for your channel and you have an attachment to this particular Corsa. An oil leak is not a good reason to scrap an otherwise decent car.

    Top tip: I have had this issue on my vauxhalls tip is when you have fitted the seal run the engine before putting the gearbox back on. As I have done it once and it leaked straight after I installed the gearbox which meant double the work. If the leak still happens after that then you need to seal the area to get through the MOT. Saying that my last car had a leak there and still passed the MOT.
    What ever your decision I will tune in to watch the videos.

    i've been working on a 1999 1.2 vauxhall corsa B for last 5 months that's done 66,178 miles only had one owner,and it was in worst shape than yours,believe me,i had to put in a new clutch,rear axle,rear springs,new rear dampers,new lower arm ball joints on both side,as well new track rod ends,new anti roll bar bushes,new wipers for the front and back,new CV joints for the drive shafts,gear linkage,new fuel tank,new brake lines for the rear,new drum cylinders,new brake cables,and that's only parts for the car,i had holes in the floor,and the out riggers where rotted,and half of it was gone,plus i had a lot welding to do on both rear wheel arch,and had 4 flat tyres,and i'm about to put it in for a MOT on Friday,so don't give up,you'll get it finish.

    You’re like me, somehow emotionally connected to our cars, so even though most people would have scrapped their cars when they become uneconomic to repair, we keep investing our time & money to keep them going! Maybe try one of those oil-leak dye kits or some talcum/baby powder to identify the source of the leak first.
    You’ve got a great channel 👍

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube 6 років тому +4

      @Marcus Maggs, i'm with you there and I don't understand what "beyond uneconomic repair" actually means in my world. I have a few cars on the drive and the one i'm most attached to is the underpowered, boring Volvo 850 estate with just under 300,000 miles on it. It took both children home from the hospital when they were born (one is old enough to drive it now). Carried our dogs when we had them, has carried so much load and well...yeah emotionally attached, it just does what it does and is still super comfortable.
      Webuyanycar.com offers £50 for it lol, of course it's not going there because it still does everything that any other car would do for me and more. It tows a trailer, carries 100kg in a roof box, takes big loads, carries 5 people comfortably with leather seats and still working air conditioning and has spent 2/3rds of its life running on LPG so it's cheap to run.
      As for economics, if I were to budget say £500 a year on maintenance, that's £42 a month even though that's worth more than the car, heck even filling it with fuel or fitting new tyres more than doubles the value! Here's the thing though, I DON'T SPEND £500 A YEAR! Probably not even half that and that includes service parts. Sure it has had the occasional higher cost like a blown head gasket and a broken gearbox but even those were only a few hundred which amortised over the years when nothing big happened, they factor down to pretty much insignificant.
      We've had it 20 years, I know the history, I know what's done and what needs doing and I know the quirks. It doesn't make sense to change it for something that wouldn't be new which would have unknown history.
      On the other hand, if I were to go and replace it with a new car, it could easily cost me £500 a month by the time down payment, loss of opportunity on capital, monthly loan or lease plus much higher insurance costs. That to me is BAD economics.

      I tried to find a replacement for my mums tatty mk4 golf that does a couple thou miles a year (60k miles auto). After a couple of months of looking it seemed every car in the price range had some awful in the MOT history. Decided to revert to her previous vehicle a mk4.5 fiesta (cheap to run, easy to park, got a mint 30k manual) that has been sitting rusting away in the driveway for almost 2 years because the golf is larger, already covered in car park kisses / sill dents, and still working like a trooper.
      I have done services on the golf and a few repairs - coolant temp sensor, breather hose, alternator cable/fuse, and its engine is ready to do another 60k miles IMO if you can put up with the 1st gear cold start slippage.
      Timing belt is only 9 years overdue, but I was struggling to justify on a cheap car so went by mileage- it has earned it and a brass impeller water pump as a treat.. and I should REALLY sort out brake, power steering, differential, gearbox fluids. which have been untouched for last 5 yrs / ever.

    When you take the rear main seal out don’t pry it with screw driver, blunt off a self tapping screw and turn it in 3/4 depth of the seal and use that to wiggle it out.
    Remember to blunt it though, garage did my ep3 type r rear main and managed to chip the block when they tapped the screw into seal, needed new lower block as seal wouldn’t hold the oil back after.

    With the oil leak, start from the top and work your way down - start with checking the rocker/valve cover gasket, this is perhaps the most common source of oil leaks that I have come across over the years. You may have to give the engine a good clean now to remove any traces of oil to be able to trace it. Seeing as it is that bad, it should be fairly easy to trace now. Don't assume anything - for example, don't assume it *is* the rear main oil seal without checking everything else first.
    We all go through this. I've had a few times when I've had to walk away and take a verrrrrry deep breath.
    BTW, it's not uncommon for cartridge type oil filters to get compressed down like that.

    When watching you put the sump gasket on I thought then that you hadn't put sealant on the sump gasket. As far as I know, all sump gaskets need sealant smeared all along the gasket before refitting. Hope that helps.

    I had a similar problem on my Vauxhall combo which is a corsa van basically oil leaking which i thought was a rear main seal the clutch needed replacing anyway, when i took the gear box off the clutch was swamped in oil, replaced the rear seal put it all back together and started it and the bugger was still leaking where the engine meets the gearbox couldn't bloody believe it, i found the problem in the end it was the oil pressure switch which sits above the gearbox and it was leaking out and making its way though the gearbox part and dropping out the bottom giving the illusion of a rear main seal.

    I'd do the rear crank seal and gearbox drive seal if it has one.. Also use some locknut seal on the clutch bolts to the crank . Not sure if this is one of the ones where oil can leak past these bolt threads.

    you dont have to take the engine out for it, you can support the weight of the engine by a jack and take out the gearbox, less time consuming than taking out the engine, and as most people are saying here, go to another mot station, you should report the one you go to for misdiagnosing more than a single fault

    I had an oil leak from the sump on a 1.25 fiesta zetec years ago. Similar metal / rubber gasket i think.
    I changed it and still had a leak and i think it was a smudge of sump sealant that fixed it in the end after the second refit.

    • @MonkeyHunch1

      THat is if it is just the sump though. just a tip you might want to consider i could be wrong.

  • @iritantNL
    @iritantNL 6 років тому

    I had an oil leak like that. You need to clean off all the oil. Because like water oil flows to the lowest point it can reach. And if you drive it the wind will get it everywhere. That engine is pretty wet with oil not just at the sump.

  • @monkey5459

    Try a UV oil detection kit (it would make an interesting video) I used a coolant UV detection kit for two coolant leaks and it worked great and paid for itself from the money I saved doing it myself. I had that white substance on the oil cap of my Astra. When I changed my valve cover because it was leaking the white stuff went away . Good luck bro!

  • @conorturton

    Don't ever get a classic car to restore because you'll put far more time and effort into it than its worth and you'll have lots of times when you do something and it'll continue to bite you in the arse if you're going to give up this easily. Its leaking from the same place on the sump because its probably not leaking from the sump and you had got it into your head that it was coming from the sump because it was the easiest fix. Any time you see oil around the gearbox end its almost always rear crankshaft oil seal, likewise the crank pulley end.

  • @larsjohansen821
    @larsjohansen821 6 років тому

    Take the engine out and redo the seal. You were happy with it, but you were quite tight on space. So i think take the engine out and do the seal the proper way and you can know for sure that the seal is fully in
