    Hi James. Another good vid!! I would check the 02 sensors are doing what they are supposed to do judging by how much oil was in the pipes. Make sure that the pre cat one is switching between 0.1 and 0.9 volts in closed loop and the post cat one steady around 0.5 volts. Anything other than these figures, then change the pre cat one and you could be looking at too much contamination of the cat itself if the post cat sensor isn't staying steady.
    Hope your dads's mondeo is doing ok.

    Great video as always, you keep making me want an astra, I had the 1.7 DTI a few years ago. Oven cleaner is good for CAT cleaning and hot water. Its coming along nicely though! ALso those astra brake pipes seem to go on the nearside, where the pipe does a U under the chassis rail.

    Astras… grrrrrr… Did a full engine service on my wifes 2005 1.8 Astra Elite at the weekend, and also changed out the headlight bulbs for NightBreakers. Took out the drivers side dip beam bulb which you do from inside the wheelarch. It has a bizzare metal clip that goes over the bulb and sort of twists and locks into position in the headlight. Anyway, 45mins later, cut hands, tons of swearing, cannot get the H7 bulb to fit for love or money. Turns out, the previous owner had put the bulb in upside down, and I was trying to put it back the same. Jesus...……….. Engine service was super easy. Also used GM GlobalTIS and updated the engine software as there was a new update.

    Always clean you car the best it can be when taking to the mot station as they won't think its scrap and they won't look for work on it.
    Make sure you clean the brake pipes with wd40 and grease & lube the joints underneath to let them know you have been underneath the car working on it just before the mot.
    This will let them know you know your stuff and make them think twice about trying it on.

    Disagree you will not need new discs for a MOT just scrape the edges with a screwdriver. Best to take the pads out and clean all the sliders etc. Once the calipers and pads are free a few hard stops on the way to the test will ensure a good result on the machine.
    Also make sure your brake limiting device at the rear is freed up. That's a fail if it's stuck.

    You want to check the front metal brake pipes where they go through the inner wing, there is a bend in the pipe there which is notorious for corrosion but not easy to see,More visible by looking down in the engine bay.

    Instead of using fairy liquid, I think you're supposed to use oven cleaner or carb cleaner? eats away at tough deposits better, and then give thorough spray out later.

    • @johnrichardson544
      @johnrichardson544 6 років тому +1

      Oven cleaner sprays on to produce a white foam, which appears to do a fantastic cleaning job, and as long as you thoroughly power wash off after application, should be absolutely fine!

    I've been there with the exhaust on my MK4 Astra. I went through 3 front sections in the time I had that car. The rear lambda was a pig to get off. I wish I had that tool you have. Would've made the job 10 times easier. I had to wedge the exhaust pipe so that it wouldn't move and got the lambda out with a stilson wrench. You will need the correct bolts, springs & gasket for the rear section. I got mine off eBay. Which GoPro have you got? I've got the Hero 3+ Black Edition which is good enough for me as I shoot my videos in 1080HD.

    • @simonparkinson1053
      @simonparkinson1053 6 років тому +1

      Don't replace it until you've tested things!!
      You need to look at the O2 sensors, either with scan tool, scope or multimeters.
      If you have a scan tool, you should check fuel trims too.
      The cat isn't always faulty, some seemingly irrelevant things life a vacuum leak can cause a P0420 to set, as well as bad O2 sensors.
      Look for a nice swing 0.1 to 0.9v on the front O2, symmetrical waveform rather than mainly high with brief dips or vice versa.
      Rear O2 voltage may mimic front until the cat heats up but should then be steady in the 0.55 to 0.7v range.
      I posted another comment (not sure if this video or another savage garage one) about how to test the cat if you know your O2 sensors and fuel trims are good.

    Good job buddy.what about underbody seal just to clean under the car give a longer life.

  • @1066gaz
    @1066gaz 6 років тому +1

    Don't use washing up liquid for cleaning (cardinal sin) as it contains salt and will rust your exhaust inside out just like it will to your cars bodywork if you wash it with that stuff.
    Its can be a scam with garages that they will fail it with a bit of surface rust on the brake pipes,make sure you wire wool them soaked with wd40.
    I used to grease the brake pipes like that but it can trap the moisture within and will rust underneath the grease,so best to clean with wd40 once in a while.
    I wonder if your exhaust is aluminised because in the olden days of exhausts pre 2000 they were mainly mild steel and they used to last around 2 years max,so hopefully yours will be aluminised.
    aluminised.exhausts last around 6 years+.
    Good video will look forward to the next.(:-)

    Wd40 detiriarates rubber over time so probably not the best lubricant to use.

    don't use wd40 on rubber, it is better for the rubber to use a silicone based lube
