Ace video James !
Winner of the comments haha
Second wire is not a negative, It's the exciter wire, great video though,
Ground via engine
I thought so.
Hi, probably a dopey question but what is an exciter wire?
@@VespaPhil It comes from the ignition switch, or in the bmw in the video from the button, it sends 12v to the starter motor solonoid to basically excite it, the thick wire in the video is permanent live from the battery, hope that helps
@@VespaPhil No question is a dopey question, we can't and I certainly don't know everything, That is why these videos are great for people to have a go themselves, Rather than being ripped of by unscrupulous garages
I can't believe that the nut for the positive connection for the starter was so rusted. It kind of makes me want to go out and remove mine just so I can give it a light coating of copper grease.
I've recently changed the brake pads on my 2012 1 series and I would highly recommend that you replace all.of the hardware, including wear sensor cables, as they are prone to perishing. And a good file for the caliper bracket will be need as the pads ride directly on the bracket so the rust that builds up prevents smooth movement of the pads.
100k subs coming up, so happy for you, been watching for a while now so happy to see you grow
Thankyou so much!
Top work James , the engineers were nice with accessibility for once 👍👍👍
If you tie 4ft of seat belt material to the first rail of each ramp and lie it flat to each wheel as you drive forward it will stop the ramps slipping forward
Its a pleasure to watch your videos. You are very skilled and at the same time humble about it. Thank you for making these videos.
You can replace the solenoid cap also replace the contacts they come in a kit easy repair 👌
Secondhand motor was really the better option though
The large wire is the 12v feed for the motor from the battery, the small wire is the 12v feed for the solenoid from the ignition circuit, the negative/ground for both is the connection of the starter motor body to the gearbox.
This video is a good example of why smacking the starter firmly with a broom handle can allow you to start the car. Doesn't fix your problem (obv), but can get you home without a tow. The other thing I'd mention is an oil leak like you mention was the oil filter housing gasket on my E53 X5 - it's a lump of metal bolted to the block with a ~75mm square rubber gasket between the two. A lot of work for a gasket (and worth watching a vid. of another car if you can't find one for the 1 series), but fixed the oil leak on my spawn's 160K+ mile X5. Cheers!
Finally number one lol I has this issue on an old 4x4 we used to give it a little love tap with a hammer 🔨 first and then the starter would work 😀
Tap with a hammer or rock it in 4th gear or reverse, a regular occurrence for me back in the 80's with various old bangers that I couldn't afford to fix!
My Austin Maxi needed the love tap. Used to short the cables with a screwdriver and give it a tap to start it from under the bonnet. Neighbours thought it great. 😂
Some coper grease on those kind of studs and bolts will make your life easyer. Good job. I had the same problem on my megane 2 and it was the same selonoid, bad connection due to rust on pozitive terminal.
Glad to see the e87 make an appearance at last and look forward to more content on it 👍 😀 just done the reluctor rings on mine.
Good job! Did you sort out your oil leak? More common than the rear main seal, is oil leaking from the oil filter/cooler housing at the top, then it all drips down. Replace the big gasket that goes between the block and the oil filter/cooler housing and 4 o-rings. Would love to see a video on this!
Excellent mechanic, great videos.
Thanks for showing that, lucky you have got a good torch.
Another great video. Advisable to put grease on the two connection studs and nuts. Will prevent re-corrosion for quite some time.
B.M.W. stands for bring my wallet .
Only worth owning if you can afford a new one and sell it before it gets 60K on it.
*burn
This fix cost him £40 lol
Just a not for next time mate, grab the wire and stop it twisting, if you only try to release the nut it’s effectively twisting everything, that’s the reason it snapped, grab the wire and give it a sharp tap, been in the trade 15 years and not snapped a starter bolt yet, got taught well though 👍🏼 learn by mistakes 😊
I worked on mine the whole summer, changed transmission oil, all the spark plugs and ignition coils, and bought a new battery. It’s now faithfully serving me in Winter.
I remember when you first got the bmw ,you showed a video when you looked around it and talked about it then you gave it a wash and didn't see it after that,I thought you'd sold it ,obviously not 😊👍
Sounds identical on startup to my dad's 320d, and if it's the N47, then have fun with the timing chain snapping if it's not been replaced already 😬
Is it worth rebuilding the old starter so you have a spare in stock? It looks like a new solenoid will fix the issue.
Definatly worth it cost about £40 better than buying another second hand and if its not needed gets good resale value if its in serviceable condition unlike this one.
ill deffo look into it
@@TheSavageGarage It is very rare not to be able to salvage a Bosch starter and because of their new price certainly worth it. I have refreshed many Bosch starters and even cleaning can make a huge difference.
Very worth it, spent £12 to buy brushes for a bosch starter that is £150 new. Thing was absolutely perfect other than worn brushes and dirt, works like a new one
Good job, I hated working on the e46.
An oily drivers side is standard for most bmw's (tilted engine), my M54 was covered but due to the cracked valve cover
Nice one James hopefully it’s put an end to the issue you were having with it mate, An easy fix like this would be a great result 👌
Get that oil leak sorted... Could just be a crush washer or torque setting. Hot oil dripping over the starter will just lead to more problems...
The starter motor is the least of your worries judging by the sound of that engine sounds like the con rod bearings and the crankshaft bearings are knackered
Your not the only one who hates ramps im useless at going up them normally roll back about 10 times lol
Hi mate thanks for your great video but there's a point black small wire is positive that's come from your engine ecu.
I had the exact same issue on my Yamaha motorbike, after changing the starter relay it fixed the issue. These sort of intermittent issues are the worst
Smaller wire is trigger wire, not negative. Starter is grounded through the body of the unit. :)
Another brilliant video and an easy fix and well done for getting a second hand one and hope you are staying safe and well
Lovely job. These bmws love a rocker cover gasket even yearly! Might be that dripping down the block. Worth a check!
Might be worth checking your glow plugs because they can make it seem as the starter motor going on most diesels I'm not saying it is but worth future proofing
Also just saw the starter motor disintegrate but I would still check the glow plugs for peace of mind
Looks like the bolt was tightened too much and caused a loose connection and with arcing, it has gone brittle and ready to snap, as you found out when undoing.
We used to get a lot of that on our electrics at work.
If that's an M47 2.0 then the rear main seal isn't awful just takes time, but that looks like the N47 2.0, which needs the flywheel put back on the same timing marks as it came off on, but couldn't imagine it's a whole lot worse than my M47s one, gearbox isn't as heavy as you've known with the FWD skoda gearbox, it takes time and patience, also referring to torque specs is important on it
Could you make a video for fixing the oil leak? Check behind og engine, quick test take your hand at the back of the engine to check if you have oil om your hand. Have same engine On my 5-series. And same starter problem hehe. Silly me replaced the starter with the same fault in yours with loose positive bolt. Thanks for great video wish if found it 1 week ago. Cheers!
James, its time to dig a work pit in your garden :)
I had a similar problem on my bmw E92 but it was the cable bolted to the front wheel arch by the jump point, the nut had come off and the cable was loose, you couldn’t tell until you took the cover off
The plastic got britle because of the resistance from the battery cable bieng loos, the bolt as you called it would get extremely hot .
Got to love the impact driver , such a versatile tool
Normal spray bottles don't last with brake cleaner it destroys the seals you need one with the correct seals
The problem is it's a BMW they are the most popular cars to breakdown on the roads today.. ya best selling it quick now it running.. great video...
If it works in an intermittent way, usually bearings are not round anymore (depends how it stales, it will start ot not). Usually a hit with wood while starting car will help him. Simple and very cheap repair. Better repair your own, used will have same issues sooner or later. Especially that this new motor doesn't spin engine hard, as it should. Change bearings, brushes, give it a good clean and it will spin engine like a drill.
Great catch and a good repair! I don't think that the plastic on the crossmember is actually intended as a jacking point though. I could certainly be wrong. Check the manual but I think it is more likely to be a skid plate. Maybe it is both.
It is a jacking point 100%
Good video , Your Astras mot due on the 2nd Dec
I had an internal short in my starter that flattened 2 batteries and an intermittent starting fault. "New" starter fixed that. Took quite a while to determine the fault as it only happened at random.
You'll read the comment about the neutral wire not being a neutral wire. The positive terminal looks like it may of been getting a little hot. Does you Dewalt guns led not stay on for a few seconds after you release the trigger ? Like a strobe light when you were feathering it. Keep up the good work.
8:22 - Uhhh, but in order to access anything under the car, you need to remove the engine shield. And to access the bolts of the shield, you need to be jack the car up. And if you use that front jacking point, you cannot remove the engine shield. Another example of German humour :D
Great job well done
Hey mate, your leak most likely comes from the o-rings sitting inside the oil/coolant heat exchanger which sits alongside the oil filter housing. These o-rings become hard and stop the sealing, they are 25 euro from BMW. I had the same leak, you have the 4 o-rings and possibly a new gasket for the oil cooler which connects to the engine block. Parts: 11428506412 and 11427802114. Cheers
More content James!! Always a good watch. Thanks
Nice video 🤞it sorts the problem after seeing the old starter it looked knackered . Looking forward to the next one stay safe mate 👍 🍺
The most difficult job is to diagnose it right. Nice job.
Pic-Up Spares FTW!! Great lads, loads of parts available too!!
If that is an older Bosch starter you can take it apart and grease up the brushes and the plunger or Bendix that moves in and out I heard before
What grease on the brushes ?
@@zeez9053 ya I think got mixed up on Toyota's you can buy a kit from Bosch that comes with the brushes
I wonder if the starter that was in there (you did compare part numbers after all) already was replaced at one point by the wrong (non start-stop) one.
Because the key difference between the two is that the start-stop one cranks a lot faster - as to more quickly start up the engine while just pressing the clutch.
I first thought the battery was weak, as it was cranking over so slowly, but you mentioned you replaced it recently.
B+ cable replacement needed more than likely as well, take the glove box out big mofo red cable on back of fusebox. Countless recalls on E8x and E9x cars. Probably due the blower recall as well
I wish changing the starter motor on my E92 M3 was as easy as this 😂
Why dont you use copper grease on bolts and or nuts basicly the things that needs to be screwed into place, it really helps in the future if it is needed another repair
That looks such a handy light!
Hi, the problem may persist after the starter motor has been changed, if it does have a look
at the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors as they can cause an intermittent starting issue i’ve had it in the past a few times
its a BMW - from experience, there will always be an oil leak. Also when fitting a new starter or anything electrical , especially from a salvage, always best to test them before fitting. will save you a sh*t load of time and effort if faulty.
James what’s happened with Skoda!?
Nothing has happened with it? its been like a week i have other cars to fix too lol
@@TheSavageGarage lol been looking forward to seeing it lol any idea fella when it will be on!! Sorry for been cheeky
@@Balloonychoonz444 my thoughts too mate, I think he was genuinely asking the question about the Skoda out of curiosity. They’re personally some of my favourite videos yet from James
happened last month on my 99 audi TT, it split the same way as yours while torquing the nut
That’s a great repair video well done on a easy fix
Great video as always. That's a great work light you have. What brand is it?
I would take pos off battery aswell
As really your earthing things with your socket if you touch metal work
Great video tho
Always a pleasure watching your videos.
Hi, you might want to get and review some Swarfega Jizer degreaser. They are in Belper Derbyshire, den Swarfega, so approach them, and ask if they would send you a can to review. I saw the oily starter motor, so thought it might be a good idea. Andrew Mckenna, Nottingham.
8.55, come on... Please don't start! 😁 😁 The only time iv heard someone say that 😂. Great channel 👍
Lovely Jubbly matey, you could do with a crawler, it will be the best money you spent after a few years.
So so so happy you’ve still got this car my mate has one and they are good cars 👌 loving the vids man keep it up and you’ll smash 100K, totally under appreciated youtuber!!! By the way man you restocking stickers anytime soon?
Great video James, but what about the oil leak from the sump? Did you nip that down before refitting the under tray? 🤔
Like you; i didnt expect it to fall apart like that 😁 good job man, and a fairly cheap fix too 👍
Top Notch Jimmy boy, ...Beard Looks Great.
Baz.
What’s happening with the gearbox job on the Lada, does it work ?
hahahah lada hehe
By the looks of it, your sump has had a slow leak for a while and all that oil has turned the plastic parts on the starter motor brittle...
The small eyelet connector on the solenoid is a live feed when key is in start position. ,the only earth is the fact it’s fastened to engine
You should change the title so other people can learn how to do it too
You’re the only other person i’ve seen with black snapon spanners. Had mine 20 years!
Not a negative but trigger wire. Starter is earthed to the box and block
Another great video! I always wait for an upload & i get excited when i get a notification 😂 i had a one series, it used to sqeak everytime it started which i think it was something to do with the starter motor 😳
Cracking video James nice easy fix 👌🏻
I'm sorry to say that man but that car is one of the worst ever made, it's a BMW which is horror in itself and it's a N47 chain snapper. And I don't know if you could hear that but your chain is already hissing.
Great video, but be mindful with that POS.
The cars done almost 200k on its original chain. Not all N47s snap there chains
@@zakstratton37 don't want to argue, sorry mate. You're absolutely right.
@@mixedboi as mine snaps at 33k😂😂
There was a recall on the 1 series something to do with the battery cable can't remember the issue was years back had the work done on the wife's 12 plate X1 120d msport.
It’s the main supply to the starter from the fuse box, the connections that are under fuse box corrode if I remember correctly
I have been working on cars for years and have never seen a starter shit itself taking the nut off like that 😂
Hi mate love the vids
I have the same problem at the moment lots of oil on the starter motor. Did you fine were your leak was coming from
Dash is lighting up like an xmas tree
Starting issue could also be a failing camshaft positioning sensor. So if it happens again it might be worth looking into James. Keep up the good content
It wouldnt turn over at all
@@TheSavageGarage Most likely the lose positive connection then that broke off
It would still crank over but wouldn't start. The ecu needs the cam sensor info to know when to fire injectors etc.
Would probably throw a code as well with no cam signal present.
@@doosanengineer7659 My Audi A4 never threw any codes it was a intermittent problem. Took a while to discover, Mind you the sensor was 17 years old
you did do a video on it changing the battery I think and having to use your scan tool to Tel the car you installed a new battery
Love your videos mate keep it up. Im currently going through the astra series and really enjoying it. Would love to get one myself at some point
What happened with your skoda start up. Wanted to see if the gearbox noise had gone👍🏻
Skoda video soon!
I have to ask - my not torque the starter-motor bolts? Anything that takes load should be torqued more than "hand-tight" IMHO. I assume you made sure the drain plug was tight enough (and not over-tightened - you've got to love techs who tighten that bolt with an impact or really crank on it...).
Thinking about getting a series 1 2004 or 2006 this week for about 1400 up to 2000 quid 99000 miles stay away or worth a look good vid matey
Where did you get the led light from that you're using under the car? The folding one.. Thanks.
Every time you change your oil you need to change the copper washer on the oil drain bolt, so you won't get leaks like you do.
I had the same problem on my old mg zs, dodgey connection on the wire. My dad once stalled it at a busy roundabout I jumped out the car jiggled the wire and off we went 😂
There’s a pull tab on the inside boot cover than pops it open without power.
You did a video on it how to fit a battery and code it also upgraded the interior lights love the videos and the content keep it up many thanks 🙏
