An Autistic Teen with Albinism (An Adoption Story)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Mae Li is an autistic teen with albinism. She spent her first 18 months in an orphanage without much physical contact or human connection. After being adopted, she slowly learned to trust her adoptive parents. Mae Li is now in high school and plans to become a nurse afterwards. She wants others to know that as long as you're doing the best you can that's all that matters.

Thank you for allowing me to share my story with the SBSK community. It was a pleasure to meet you and Alyssa. Thank you everyone for the encouragement and support. I always enjoy watching and learning from all of your videos❤️
Dude! You are so freaking smart! I'm so excited to follow your journey and see you achieve your goals. You could be a Dr some day.
Agree with the comment of you are so smart. You are a very good speaker and told us your story well. I learned a lot about institutional autism and being albino. I hope you get to be a nurse or whatever it is that you want to be. Your parents are awesome and are a good support system. Good luck in your endeavors😀
I went to China to adopt my sister so I enjoyed your story and hearing your dad’s story about meeting you.
You are a super intelligent, very wise, knowledgeable and beautiful young lady and I know you will excel at anything you want to do.
You are so beautiful girl!! ❤❤❤❤
She’s an icon. She seems like the type of kid everyone hopes to raise. I’m sure her family is beyond proud of her.
Thank you! I couldn’t have made it this far without my parents’ support and perseverance❤️
Is your pfp Bob from Animal Crossing?
@@AmeliaEarhart537
Nope, but I understand why you were asking. The colors purple and pink in Mae Li’s eyes, plus the Asian features in her eyes could remind someone of that cute kitty. Actually, that is a close-up shot of Mae Li’s
Beautiful blue eyes, losing the blue to pink and lavender through light and magnification. Basically holding a magnifying glass up to her eyes is like super zooming in on pixels. You see colors while zoomed in, that you couldn’t see with the naked eye. Thanks for asking! 😊
I was adopted from Russia so I can connect to a degree with Mae Li and want to give her a virtual hug and say how wonderfully eloquent she is in her sentiments and how she presents herself to the world
oh, I am from Russia hehe
Thank you! Virtual hugs❌❤️😊
I was adopted from Moscow Russia 😆😆😆
@@Carriedteamavatarsame here!
Very, very articulate and intelligent! You GO, girl!
I agree.
Listening to her father brag on her is so touching ❤
and it's so cute that she's embarrassed by how her parents are so proud of her 😄
Such a great adoption story, and dad is so soft spoken but so proud he looks like he's about to burst. So awesome ☺️
He does, true Dad shine! 😍
Same with her mom. That story about how she fekt the first time she held her in her arms is so beautiful. What wonderful parents! With a wonderful daughter!
🌻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️ Mae Li , I’m 74 years old. Spent many years being self conscious and worrying about what others thought.
It was a waste of my precious time.
Sweet, beautiful, young lady, we weren’t born to make the world happy. You are wonderful. 🌻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️
You are intelligent and compassionate. You’ll make a fantastic nurse !
Such an intelligent young woman. She'll do so many great things in life.
Albinism has nothing to do with a person"s intellengence.
What a stunning beauty!!! Inside and out!! And quite the conversationalist for someone so young. She’s going to go far in whatever she chooses to do in life!
😐
She is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!
100%
Mae Li is clearly an incredibly intelligent and compassionate person. I would have absolutely loved to have a friend like her when I was a teenager. I am also autistic with physical disabilities and she articulates her experiences so well. I have a lot of experience with nurses and I can confidently say that she is going to change a LOT of lives no matter what she decides to do!
She’s lovely. It’s very refreshing to see a young person not interested in just what I personally find to be very trivial and a huge problem with society. Social media and all those trends and goofy things. She’s very well rounded and realizes what’s important like loved ones and birds and hiking!
Shes a natural on camera, very well spoken and very informative. Thank you for another great interview.
Thank you! I’m glad you found the interview helpful. Watching these interviews on this channel make my day :)
Hey everyone, it's Mae Li. Thank you all again for the encouragement and heartwarming messages. Since filming this interview on May 1st, 2023, I graduated from High School and I am going to start college in the Spring of 2025. I can't believe it has been a year and a half since the interview. The time flew by too quickly! Seeing the support/comments this video continues to receive has been wonderful. It has been great to see the SBSK community continue to thrive! I hope everyone has a great week. Take care❤️☺️
Glad to hear it 🫶
What will your major be in college?
I'll be pursuing my Bachelor's of Science in Nursing🩺😃
the neglect of disabled orphans is the most heartbreaking thing ive heard of, such as the kids in bulgaria. i'm so happy to see her thriving and living her best life with wonderful adoptive parents. she seems very smart.
she really isnt an orphan
the china one child policy forced many families to give up both female and disabled children...even if they didnt want to
@@thewkovacs316I had no idea. It seems kind of weird since I thought the purpose of the one child policy was to stem population growth. Taking kids away from parents doesn't help because the population is still there, only not raised in a family setting. I thought they forced abortions.
@@thewkovacs316 Even if her parents didn't want to give her up the government forced her to be an orphan.
@@Catlily5 true
@@thewkovacs316 They were not forced to, though. They chose to. They could keep their daughters, but many people would rather have a son so they get rid of their daughter so they can try again. However, sometimes not everyone in the family agrees. E.g. the mom may have wanted to keep her but her husband or parents might have taken the baby away from her.
I went to high school with a student like Mai li - although he was not adopted. He wore glasses with a telescope on one of the lenses. He would have to put his book or written work almost touching the telescope while reading. He was very smart and quiet. If one of us was struggling with a problem on our class work he was always very helpful. I can remember worrying about him and worrying about him being bullied. But you know I never witnessed or heard about any bullying hiM. I saw him about 14 years after graduation at a bookstore. He was married and had two children. I was worried about for nothing. He was happy and living a full life. Chris I think you are right on target about how teenagers feel in regards to other teenagers and not being able to relate. I know I myself definitely felt that way. Thank you and Mai li for this interview.
I went to college with a guy like Mae Li. I never saw him use a telescope. But he had a guide dog.
I was a different kid, and was bullied in and outside the home. Can't tell you how grateful I am he had undercover angels like you! 👍❤️🙏💞
I find it so endearing that she was worried about stumbling over her words - and yet just a few minutes earlier in the interview her Mom was asking her for help with HER words 🥰
I find it adorable
My daughter is adopted, and has high functioning autism. She also struggles with extreme anxiety. She's the most amazing person I know, and I couldn't possibly love her more. Mae Li has wonderful parents, they are a perfect match for her.
Just want to let you know, as someone who's autistic, "high functioning" can be a harmful label, because while on the outside she may seem like she's close to "normal", in reality she may be making a huge effort to look like she's "normal" but actually struggling internally, which can cause burnout/anxiety. Many women, girls, and NBs become excellent maskers over their lives and for that reason are underdiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and/or not believed for their struggles. Just keep that in mind ✌️&❤
@@inmyworldkindagirl Fellow autistic here, agreed! I’d also suggest using identity-first language (autistic person) rather than person-first language (person with autism/has autism) because person-first language can be stigmatizing while identity-first language lets us embrace ourselves ❤
@@amorfm4071I actually see it the other way round. I feel like saying autistic people is like referring to a different species, and feels more othering. I'm still a person, I just happen to have autism.
As a nurse myself, we would love to have you in our field!
Can imagine some patients would think they got an angel... Which my Dad said most are!
Thank you for your work and for the kind words❤️👩🏼⚕️🩺
@@Maeli07 Mae Li, you can literally become a doctor if you wish to! I can tell, your knowledge is boundless!
what an absolutely awesome human she is ❤ I’m 27 and I totally see why she has older friends, I’d totally be her friend!
I would definitely be her friend
I agree, she's a good conversationalist.
I'm autistic myself, and struggling a lot with it atm. People are not always so kind to those of us who are different. But videos like this really helps make me feel like I'm not so different, awkward and weird after all. Thank you for everything you do SBSK, you make the world a better place with every story you share!
I'm in the same boat. I like it here cuz there's no judgement or name calling or teasing. Just different folks relating w each other & our myriad of differences that keep us bonded even if you have no one else.💜🙌✨
Same here I'm autistic
She’s an incredibly intelligent young lady who is so very articulate. After watching the entire interview, I feel far more educated about the subject of adoption from the perspective of the adoptee. I’m confident she will be a wonderful and compassionate nurse. I wish her success and happiness. How could she not succeed with such supportive, loving parents as well as possessing a beautiful spirit? Thank you for sharing. 💖🌹💖
Wow, it's such a pleasure listening to someone so well-spoken and intelligent. Mae Li, I would have loved to have a friend like you when I was a teenager because you just seem so fun to be around :) I hope you know you can do anything you set your mind to!
And your parents are SUPER loving people! You’re so lucky!! 😊👍
From one autistic old soul to another: you're doing great. Your strength shines through. You're articulate. You understand a lot that I didn't understand until I was into my twenties.
You're videos are great. Im 34, i found out at 21 that i had dyspraxia...then suddenly that Im on the autistic spectrum, then last year I found out I have ptsd. I have had a very difficult time, watching these videos gives me hope for young people struggling with various issues. Best of luck to Mei lin, you are a great young woman and I wish you the best.
You will help me, my wife and my children who are on the spectrum.
When they grow up, I will show them this video and hope that they learn a thing or two from you.
I’m 40 seconds in… she’s awesome!! Our young teen’s could learn a lot from her. What a brilliantly beautiful young lady. ❤
Mae Li, you deserve 100% of the credit you get. i wanted A’s in school but it was SO difficult for me to achieve. it’s not at all easy and i wish i was as smart as you! you’re doing great kid!
Thank you! Getting A’s are not the easiest at times for me either. Just finishing up high school and preparing for college is a whole challenge itself😅 I appreciate your kind words and hope for nothing but the best for you.❤️
She is one of the most insightful, intelligent, self aware, human beings I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.... it's truly incredible. I am in awe
I totally see why people think she’s older. She’s so articulate and likable. I think she will make a wonderful nurse someday ❤
She’s brilliant. The world is her oyster! ❤️👍
I totally agree, she’s so smart and aware for her age. I would love a revisit in a few years to see how her plans are working out.
I think she would make an amazing nurse and I wish her the very best of luck.

She’s going to be a fantastic nurse! So smart and so kind.
Hey Mae Li I’m also 16 and deal with some health issues not albinism but I do have a hard time relating to others. Most of my friends are in their 20s to 40s. You are such a kind human from what I can tell and also very intelligent. You will make an amazing nurse one day. I know you won’t see this but if you do, keep on being your authentic self.
Thank you for your kind words. You seem like a very kind and down to earth person. It is very refreshing to meet other teens who understand what is important in life such as yourself. Just keep being you. The sky is the limit :)

I'm 71, and I've always had a problem with depth perception. I've never been graceful and I hurt myself a lot over the years. I'm near sighted also. I've been telling people for years I'm not graceful. You'd be surprised, you get to the point that you make jokes and people will laugh with you!! Hang in there, it's plain your an Amazing young lady!!!❤
Her emotional intelligence is off the scale! She’s articulate, intelligent, compassionate and extremely wise for her age. Mae Li, you have so much to offer in this world and I truly appreciate how you explained things so clearly. I’m 100% sure you’ll be successful in your career as a nurse… but I also think you have the rare qualities to be an advocate and mentor who will positively impact not only those with disabilities but in educating the general public as well. You’re quite an impressive young lady and I hope you know just how special you truly are 🙏
If more adults thought like this young lady the world would be a better place!

Wow. She is absolutely amazing. She will be utterly loved by everyone her entire life. Thanks for revealing her story!
I relate to her so much! I've also been called an old soul, I'm also autistic and was very similarly oriented when I was 16. I almost cant believe shes 16, she's so mature and chooses her words so carefully. I'm glad you learnt and are learning to accept yourself more openly :) be proud of yourself! Youre incredibly inspiring to many young adults and teenagers with autism, with albinism, with vision impairments and much more. I'm sure many viewers can see this video and take home a message of love and self-acceptance! Also shout-out to your parents, they seem wonderfully patient and kind.

The second she started speaking I lost it. 🤯 What an incredibly beautiful, intelligent and educated girl. I salute you and I wish you all the best.
And thanks to her loving parents. You obviously did an outstanding job. Wish my parents were like you.
Much love all the way from Germany!

She is awesome, so are her parents! They seem like amazing people. I'd never heard of institutional autism before, that's both fascinating and tragic. This is the second time you interviewed a girl with albinism adopted from China, coincidentally. I hope we get an update sometime on her too.
Thank you for your kind words! Institutional autism definitely has its challenges. I couldn’t have made it this far without my parents’ determination and patience. Johanna’s video was an awesome and heartwarming interview to watch. I would love to watch a follow up interview with her and her family. I hope they are doing well today :)
Loved hearing her parents praise and compliment her!
Extraordinary self awareness. Such an eloquent young person. Thank you.

Amazing young lady and wonderful parents. How are they not all bawling? Too sweet.
I hope you read these comments. I’m 21 and I feel the exact same way, I also really struggle with trust/ attachment issues. Your parents are so right, you are so worth the extra effort. I hope you’re having a great day, and thank you for having the courage for doing this interview!! One step at a time with our best effort!!

This girl is amazing. So outspoken. Adorable. Smart. Beautiful interview.
Mae Li is so well-spoken and seems very mature for her age! This interview warmed my heart. One of my closest friends has albinism and he struggled with self-confidence issues too due to his legal blindness and looking like he's "white" (he is Indonesian). Thank you Mae Li for sharing your story!
This is definitely up there as one of my favorite videos from this channel. If Mae is reading this, you have no clue how beautiful and spectacular you are. Seriously! Literally within the first few seconds of this video I was blown away by you. It may not always seem like it but what you've been granted is a gift. i truly do believe we are all designed perfectly by a higher power, and you've been gifted traits that no one else can take from you. I hope you help and inspire a lot of people with your story, and I think your goal to be an RN is an awesome career path! Don't let a day go by where you don't think that you're an awesome, super smart, and lovely human being in every way possible, because you 100% are. God bless you and your family.
P.S. Purple eyes 💜💜💜!!!! NO ONE on this planet can compete with that! They're so beautiful!!

You can really see her motivation to help people. What a great nurse she will be!
Mae Li, this may sound strange but it is so clear that your struggles (and the love of your parents) have made you so much stronger than so many your age. I would say I hope you do well, but I don't have to. You demonstrate such strength that I am certain you will succeed at whatever you try for. I know you will do much good in your career as a nurse.
This beautiful young girl is one of the most intelligent people ive ever stumbled across online. She has a lot of wisdom behind her words and I’m very impressed by it since her age. I just know she will do great things in life and she, and her story has really impacted me. Thank you for sharing this

Mae Li Targaryen!!!! Such a beautiful girl!!!
BTW, I'm adopted too, and over 30. And I had doubts till just few years ago to trust my parents. Your doing great because you're doing it at your own pace. Love you ;)
The father! "And as it turned out, better than we could have ever imagined". This is the kindest man, and his heart, love, and compassion jump off the screen! This is true manhood. This is true masculinity. He is the definition of meekness (strength under control) & kindness. This is such a beautiful family, and Mea Li is such a beautiful young lady.
He’s a dream guy. What an amazing father.
What a beautiful well spoken gem of a young lady. I can remember when I was younger caring so much about what everybody else thought of me. As I got older I realized everyone else is worried about themselves. They don't really care about me. It did take a lot of time and growth and I hope she finds herself in a place where she doesn't care what anybody else thinks and puts her needs above all else. Sending love from Los Angeles 💜💛
Girlfriend! I'm legally blind too and it has taken me nearly 35 years to finally get over feeling uncomfortable using my visual aids in front of other people!!! You are not alone in feeling this way... but please know that at some point, it WILL get much easier!!! :D
Actually, I'd say that watching SBSK video after SBSK video has helped me to feel MUCH MORE "normal" in the world. Once I started to see more and more people with ALL kinds of "disabilities"... and yet they had people in their lives who love and support them so much... just like the people that I have in my life... I just finally shook the idea of trying to feel "normal". Now it feels like we're ALL normal! ;-) I mean, EVERYONE (even the people without a quote-unquote "disability") has their own thing/s that make them feel "inadequate" or "weird" in some way! I like how you talked about the models out there who are airbrushed etc) because that NAILS it!!! Even the "perfect" seeming people feel like they have to be airbrushed to feel more-accepted in some imaginary way! It's SO funny when you think about it. ;-D
You're actually fairly lucky in the sense that the equipment available nowadays to help people with low vision has become really discrete in comparison to what we had when I was younger! The CCTVs of my youth were HUGE, bulky machines! Now they're much more sleek and just look like other flat screens, for example! ...And can I get an "amen" for smart phones!!! haha
Hang in there, chica! You're already SO mature and seem to have a good head on your shoulders! I'm not too worried for ya! You seem like you're gonna go pretty far with/in your goals! ❤💪👊
