- ( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2016 Ram 3500 Cummins Dually is a big and powerful heavy duty truck. In fact it Ram boasts that it has the best in class towing capacity and torque. In this TFLTruck towing review Nathan gets behind the wheel of the 2016 Ram 3500 Cummins Dually and tows almost 30,000 pounds.

RAM made an amazing truck. Those of us who drive them already know this.
To the doubters: Price out a new luxury SUV. Then price out a new 1500 Longhorn. Now price out a new 2500 Longhorn Cummins Mega. The price increase on the diesel is negligible. The fact is for a little more you get a lot more. My '16 2500 happily carries me to and from the office with a towing trip a few times/year. Why do people DD these? Because they rock to drive, fit families, and because we can. Buy big and never look back.
10 years from now 50,000 lbs towing 1500lb-ft torque
in a half ton lol
+trooper3030 only for $125,00 fully loaded but your wages stay the same
+trooper3030 20 years from now, you get that in a GMC canyon lol
can't wait!
+Liemciemdk89 ford will make it too 125K before anyone else lol.
It blows my mind how expensive trucks have gotten over the years.
in my opinion this channel deserves more subs! fantastic work guys!
i have a 2015 ram 2500 laramie 6.7 cummins i tow a big tex 20+5 with a case backhoe 580E total weight is 26.6k on the scale. the 2500 handles it very easy... AMAZING TRUCK!!!!
C H wow that’s impressive. A 2500 ?
10 years ago i would have shown you one of the multitude of 5.9L Cummins' out there making well over 1000 pound feet with minor modifications.
thanks for bringing us along! great sounding vehicle
Glad to see Nathan again. I like his perspective.
These trucks are getting so powerful. And here I am happy with my 2015 Silverado with a puny 4.3 V6. lol
I got a 2011 ram 1500 and it's got the hemi and I can't complain but damn buddy these trucks are unreal!!
+Biker Jim I got my lawn mower 5hp V1 very happy with it
+carson819 hahah, that's good. ;-)
im european and have a 2.2 turbo van and think its awesome.
+Bernardo Santos Well, in Europe, a 2.2 liter is a big block. :D 'Merica!
Thanks for finally showing the small build sheet on the truck as well as the VIN tag on the trailer, you guys should do that more offen as well as gauge shots in the corner during towing on grades as well as flat ground so we can see the shift pattern as well as acceleration resistance. And as for the argument on torque vs hp. Horse power is a calculation based off the torque curve vs rpm. Torque moves the load off the line and is like a rating of resistance to weight/load. Horsepower is the rate at which the engine can accelerate that load. In towing there both important but torque is more important then horse power in any circumstance.
Ram out done themselves it is such a beautiful truck. I want one so bad
It's awesome that you posted this towing video of the new 2016 ram 3500 so soon! Keep up the good work. Two questions though: Are you going to do the same towing test with the same truck on the Ike gauntlet, and, if possible to say, do you know or can you find out why ram has decided to stick with 385 horsepower?
When they say it can haul up to 31000 does that includes the truck with the load ?
Can some plz tell me what truck is the highest towing campasity truck
How will it handle towing 30,000 in the mountains? How will it handle if you have to jump on the brakes fast? For that kind money I will take a slightly used class 8.
Pretty impressive. Can't wait to see the numbers for the new Superduty trucksm
The spec sheet contradicts itself, top right it says rear leaf springs, bottom left options: Rear air springs, or is it air assist?
@TFL Truck, have you noticed how much more aggressive the Aisin is at downshifting than the 68RFE? Makes the exhaust brake so much more effective. I wish they would put the HO Cummins and Aisin in the 2500.
Impressive. Interior actually looks comfortable.
That is nice powerfull truck indeed. but I'd like to see how ram1500 or 2500 will do that. Can they tow such a heavy platform or not, what MPG they will have and such stuff.
I wonder if the steering will hold up ?
Question, the towing capacity of 31,200 pounds is combined with the truck weight? because I get confused with that in my local ram they said is combined but that don't given much freight capacity
Would love to see the Ram 2500 or 3500 with the manual Transmission do an ike Gauntlet run
I wanna know how much weight was in the trailer of that standard cab dually and see that on the pass with probly 35k lbs? that'd be a test for yah!!
How many fuel tanks does it have and does it take DEF?
ive been towing my 580 case behind my 2014 ram 3500 on a similar big tex 25gn without any of these engine issues you all speak ofI'm quite impressed with the truck ,70000 kms on it and 61000 kms of that towing the trailer and backhoe without issue aside from tires, front rotors, some annoying shifting patterns, and a fair bit of turbo lagonce you learn how to cope with these minor issues its and impressive power house
where do you find loads for ram 3500
I suppose its nice to have a sister company that makes all kinds of cool construction and farm equipment.
NICE TRUCK!!
I remember 10yrs ago when Chevrolet made the Duramax with 660lbs of torque and 360hp that was a huge deal and towing 20,000lbs nobody could touch it, and if you wanted to tow that big trailer setup they did there you would have to get an F450 or Kodiak 4500 now 3/4 ton trucks can do that it's crazy to me how far we've come in just a short period of time I can't wait to see what the next generations of this will do.
what's the rating for cdl's?
Seems. Very Good vest hum What's your opinion about 1!
Having the 4.10 rear end is a bummer when using the truck without a trailer. The 3.73 while not towing quit as much (25,010) but is much better on the road.
great they can make these trucks. tried to find a dealer to service them. I have a 2008 dodge 5500 and can't find a dealer within 150 miles to perform recalls.
Needs a little more *R A M* signage.
Love this power war because next year Ford is going to bring to the market a 900+ ft-lb Super Duty and GM a 900++ ft-lb truck and on and on.
you mean gm is going to bring another piece of shit to the game and lose again
+Rocky Imbeault you got it
More power means nothing but bragging rights for manufacturers when they're flooding the truck with torque management to only let it have full torque in the ideal weather, grade, gear, speed, you get my drift.
But the ford is horrible looking so...
+rogelv8td The EPA's new mpg and emissions standards on heavy duty trucks will probably put a stop to these constant power increases.
I'm more accustomed to running 80K+ pounds, but this is even impressive to me. Well done to everyone at RAM!
you do know that's no where near 30,000ibs riiggghht? that combination probably weighs about 18,000 so the load really is only about 21,000 - 22,000 maybe a little over...
+Cole Guthrie Well, you start with a Big Tex 3XGN 28+5, which has a base (without any options) tare weight of 9,140 pounds. Then you add the fact that the CASE backhoes I've dealt with had an operating weight of 18,000-21,000 pounds. With those numbers, and my experience, I'm going to have to say that the folks at RAM are right and you're not. But if you have something that refutes these numbers, I'm sure we'd all be glad to see them...
RS Hunter and that trailer seems a little small to me 9,000 pounds btw...whether I'm wrong or not that trailer is tiny for 9,000...yeah the case is around 18 to 20,000 but that trailer is no where near 9,000 pounds I mean how?
+Cole Guthrie Sorry, my original reply does come across rather snide, doesn't it? The trailer really does weigh that much. There's just a lot of steel in order to carry the very high point loads that are typical in construction equipment. You just can't compare the strength of one of these to something like the typical utility trailer or car hauler. Load a backhoe on one of those and you'll no longer have a functional trailer. Just consider the axle capacities of a comparable length utility trailer, twin 4,000-6,000 pound axles versus twin 15,000 pound axles.
RS Hunter true lol I'm just saying it still looks a bit small to be 9,000 I mean I'm not disagreeing but my friend has a trailer about as long but doesn't have dual tires and sits around 6,500 without anything on it, which I suppose this is impressive for a dodge ( lol had to throw that in it was soooo tempting ) but what I don't get is why do they only say the chevy 3500HD can only haul around 23,000? Or 26,000 I'm not sure...but I've seen those trucks haul around 35,000+ especially the car trailers usually smaller ones which are much much heavier than this trailer by far, with a few cars on it without even a little struggle but maybe that's just me? Idk
? What would be best at tow a diesel Humvee 6.5l Detroit Diesel bone stock built by the military vs a 1 ton dually truck 2008 Dodge ram3500 4-door long bed 6.7l
? how big of boat a 2005 gmc Duramax turbo diesel 4wd 2500hd can tow a 40' boat Yachts ?
omg yes thank you :D I wanted to see this beauty haul a case 580 backhoe... and I got it :D
Do the same review with the 4500 and 5500 trucks please!
I would actually consider a set of steel blinds from an old house window stapled to the front grille to be an aesthetic upgrade.
When you showed off the engine bay why did it look like that truck had a coolant explosion? Is that truck really pulling all that weight as easily as you say uphill without overheating as it looks like that truck has.
+Mark Ryl-Kuchar They didn't drive up any hills...so if that truly is coolant all over in a brand new truck I'll quickly mark RAM off the new truck list LOL.
still a lot of money.... I just wish government would stay out of the diesel market. EGR's and DEF are the death of diesels. As for gas models, hands down the ethanol blending is the most destructive. Just ask the small engine manufacturers, outboard engines, and off road motorcycle riders.
Agreed. Still got a Cummins.
I like how the Dodge technician riding shotgun had no enthusiasm whatsoever...
if someone put together the Cummins, with the Allison 1000 from GM and a 2016 ford body. it would be amazing
Hey hey. Big Tex trailers is from my home town in East Texas.
It's a luxury truck that's why you have the grill @7:15
You almost have to buy a Bull bar to cover that up...or a new billet grill
That dump truck wasn't PTO activated, it has an electric pump for the hydraulic system... weak sauce for a dedicated dump body.
Im curious, are there older AND reliable trucks that can pull 30k? What weight does not require CDL?
robby tm 26000 pounds and under does not require CDL
What's the song at 3:05
Ike gauntlet please.
This road is too level for a test.
Yeah, right.
+Frank White your CLEARLY, visually impared.
+Jesse Kangu -- go back to basic english class before you try and spit bullshit at someone.
You look like a 13 year old pissed off asian at this point.
How much does that gooseneck weigh empty?
Do a review on the 2016 ram 2500 Cummins Laramie 4X4 crew cab. Make sure it not a dually!!!
Why is it brand new and already rusting?
By the way, I personally love the new grill.
The Big Tex rep, definitely sounds like he's from Texas. We got dem goose neck tandeeem axle.
? can you guy has Test tow Towing capacity on boats ?
for those of you who are not truck drivers the gross combination vechicle weight in most states is 26000 pounds meaning if the total weight of truck trailer and load excedes that you must have a cdl to legally drive it most people wont use this much truck
So how much can you tow without a cdl? I've seen some big ass rvs being towed by people that don't look or drive like truckers
Gross combined weight of 26,000 anything mover technically is cdl
Wonder how long till they make those trucks with 1000 torque? Cannot believe how much these things are getting stock. It's insane.
Fuel economy???
the Ram has the best towing but you have to get the regular cab 4x2 to get those numbers.
glad to hear someone say it is a cld with the trailer...... no one every tells buyers this, truck dealerships and trailer sales men.
+doccafs Because with private use you don't need a CDL, otherwise many of the RVer's out there would be required to have a CDL.
If you making money with the trailer or with whats on the trailer, and in my state farmer and racing is done for profit then the state says cdl. Cdl is also done by weight. And i am sure the trailer pulling the john deere 110 back hoe, is all c d l in my state. PA
CDL???? I never realized this. So if I am reading the law right, when my dad pulls any trailer, greater than 10,000 lbs with his car, he needs a CDL. I wonder how many millions of people don't realize this? I always thought it was just for commercial drivers.
UPDATE: I just talked to the DOT, and they said you do NOT need a CDL if it is private, and not for hire, or transport of paying passengers. So you can tow all you want with your pickup, and NO CDL is needed.
Every state has different towing laws. Nathan would have definitely needed a commercial or non-commercial Class A license to tow this trailer in my state.
you can't tow anything over 26,000 pounds (I think, it may be 30,000) in my state with a standard license
Not in every state little fella, of the GVW of the truck and trailer is greater than 10,000 but under 26,000 you need a chauffeurs license. Any higher than 26,000 pounds you needs a CDL, it doe at matter what your hauling across most state lines of you don't stop at a weigh scale you'll get extra fucked. Most sheriffs won't know or bother you but state police and DOT have strict rules against CDL carriers. It's why it's a Law cause Joe blow killed a bunch of people because he's not classified to haul 30,000 pounds or 80,000 in a 18 wheeler.... If you buy a dully, that's GVW is 14,000 you can drive it of the lot, On e you put a sticker on it for commercial use your required by law to possess a Chauffeur license to drive it because it's over 10,000 pounds.... With $5000 in DOT tickets trust me I know the laws where I'm from
+Daniel Schneider 7777 un
Hey Nathan does the New 2016 Ram 3500 come with a engine brake? could you order dodge to put one in??
All 6.7 Cummins trucks have the exhaust brake
+69ChevroletNova They started putting them in 2007.5 with the intro of the 6.7L.
+Gentry Bignall But the Aisin transmission makes better use of it. The 3500 with Aisin has aggressive downshifting, which increases compression braking. It makes the 2500 with 68RFE feel useless in comparison.
+MrChevypower And the 68RFE does not? Seems pretty aggressive to me when I am in tow mode. Might be interested to take a Aisin out to compare.
Hil Palmer Yeah it's night and day. I work for a Ram dealership, and it was one of my customers who noticed it. He bought two cab & chassis trucks that both had the Aisin. He also has a 2500 Mega, and ever since he has pointed it out, I have observed consistent results. The Aisin feels like it will just about bring it to a complete stop on its own every time if in tow haul with the jake brake turned on.
Nice but the ram wording on the tailgate would immediately be debadged and that grill swapped out for an aftermarket one. Other than that impressive.
+ScoobyDigites Exactly
Eh, i like the girl, maybe if it was black, but totally agree for the debadging
A lot of these things have a harder time stopping than they do pulling
Looks 10x better than a ford f350
test drive the 2017 Dodge Cummins dually pulling a trailer
3:32 no im dancing to this
Actually no CDL needed if it's personally owned and operated... At least in Michigan (where they're doing the test).
It's unlikely that someone will own equipment like that for non commercial use, but possible. In the case of my family we load up 2 jeeps on a large gooseneck trailer like that but have it behind a BMY 931a2 5-ton army truck. In total it weighs in at 35,000 lbs or so and that's perfectly legal as long as it's all personal use.
Ram sign on tailgate needs to be bigger
Hello there Nathan! Yea absolutely if I were to own a HD full size pickup? It would be a Ram Laramie 4x4 2500/3500, Cummins/Aisin Crew Cab,6.5’ bed in Pearl White, with the Brown Ivory Frost interior in a 3500 with SRW. If a 2500, I would be a Laramie 4x4, Cummins manual transmission with the Off Road Package in Pearl White and Brown Ivory Frost Interior! Nathan you never dump a load like that! Standing outside the cab! You always remain behind the wheel! Cause when the load runs out the back and piles up it will shove the Truck forward!
Do the front ends still wear out regularly in these?
Dude this is 2016. It got address a few years already.
+bababooey7576 Yep they do especially when people continually overload them.
well of course. I don't think any truck will last when you abuse it all the time. You got to follow the specs. By the way if a dealership finds out that you overloaded it and something breaks, there is no warranty for that.
Jan madelo As of the past few years I haven't heard of any issues with the front suspension troubles from the past...so one would hope they've fixed that by now LOL.
William Todd Good. I'd heard in the past, dodge front ends were bullet-proof (well, good at least) and it was a case of , oops better make them a bit more crappy. then they were too crappy and it is time ti fix again...the 2007 3500s we have at work can't keep front end parts in them. I saw one in last week...tie rods, ball joints etc., again. ., I sure hope the new dodges are better than these ones...
Curious to see how well the new 5 liter Cummins trucks will sell compared to these top dogs. For an average guy this is too much unless you regularly towing big stiff.
+1BestWay Can't wait to see what the numbers are on the new Nissan Titan XD with the 5.0L Cummins.
so why are you buying it? :) it's meant for towing
+dimmacommunication, Exactly, people buy real trucks for towing. Good point.
1BestWay
my dream is to do a travel across U.S.A with a towed trailer :)
How is this right not over the GVWR of the truck? At 30k for the trailer assuming a 19% pin weight you're already at 5700lbs then add 2 passengers and I'll be nice and say 300lbs giving a total of 6000lbs where the Laramie Limited''s max carrying capacity as stated is 5460 lbs from the website and towing guides.
my 2004 lincoln navigator can town 30,000 lbs...piece of cake..5.4 Power!!
+Geovanni Delgado In reality yes it most likely could...but can your Navigator stop it once you get it moving LOL. That's more important than getting the load moving....is the vehicle actually capable of stopping it in an emergency.
So this Dodge ram is more powerful than a Medium Duty International with a Maxxforce DT?
Pretty much putting medium duty truck engines, such as school bus engines, etc in pickups now..lol
whats so bad about the grill I like it
How long till somebody makes a 6.9 that tows 40,000? At the rate its going It may happen. Although I don't know if a pick up will be heavy enough to not get pushed around. Guess that's a question for the experts.
awesome
how can a truck with 6 wheels only have 4 wheel drive?
Second.
What was Ram thinking with that terrible grille and that big ass Ram logo on the tailgate. It's so hideous.
It's awesome
Except the grille
+headcas620 Honestly I like the grill but the tailgate is plain stupid. Dealbreaker
+Dangerzone I fully agree
+Dangerzone as a 2014 Ram owner, I totally agree! Horrible tailgate. Did look at one up close, and it appears they might come off without too much effort.
I don't get how they continue to up the torque numbers, but not the horsepower. Also for the 3/4 line... Please bring back the 3.73 gearing!!!!
The grill wouldn't look bad if it didn't have those weird inlets on the side.
Good point
love grill
nuca explica la situación de la 4x4
That's engine bay looks like it blew another head gasket.
+cosmophonic12 I agree. Probably the replacement engine is in there.
+cosmophonic12 i've seen my fair share of blown HG and your spot on, duramax, cummins and PSD all do this exact thing
+cosmophonic12 Sadly, it's very possible that's what happened.
+cosmophonic12 Looks like road spray to me. Never seen a head gasket spray the the entire engine compartment.
+cosmophonic12 look at this comment from this expert haha. tool.
nuca explica funciona la cuatro por cuatro
Oil bath axles, JESUS! Those trailers are ancient.
Ram is the best.
okay that grill is super ugly. luckily that's one of the easiest and cheapest things to replace. But for $75000 that sure is a shitty designed grill. I'd rather buy the better looking "less luxury" models just because they don't have that grill. Horrible design and horrible marketing. At least it's not as hideous as that new Ford Super Duty line though Jesus those are fugly.
+Waylon Shofner So don't buy the Limited and you will get a different grill.
+Waylon Shofner Yeah i am a ford guy and i can say without a doubt i will not be buying a a new F-150 or 2017 F-250-450. That body Ford has is um...well...fugly...i guess is the right word. although the new F-150 is growing on me
The new F-150 is not too bad in the all blacked out sport edition with bolt on look fender flares and a leveleling kit with some black rims and off-road tires. But it's really a hit or miss lol. And I really only like the front end, the tail lights and tailgate are horrendous lol. The headlights are alright, not my first choice lol. Now the super duties are just vomit lol.
he should of mentioned in the sae standard about the davis dam test and how its horsepower dependent.. of course it tows fine on flat ground, once you get it moving and factor in the coefficient of friction for tires (.008)x(30000lb)= 240lb force. and once you multiply the (engine torque by x gear ratio your in times the rear end ratio)/ tire radius its not really that big of a deal..
English please
+Marc Monson not that big of a deal?...now everyone knows you have never driven a truck and that you are more familiar with a computer than a vagina
cool story bro want to tell it again
. and your just a teenage swearing on the internet
So I'm a bit confused by the Chevy ads. They say their HD trucks have the most towing capacity yet I can't find one that is rated at 30k lbs. Are they talking about a SRW configuration or what? Or am I missing something here?
+PorkyLovesMud You may be referring to their 19k (or 19.5k) tow rating from the factory installed receiver. Class V (5)!.
+John Clark Makes sense. So you're saying they have the highest bumper pull towing capacity?
+PorkyLovesMud Yes. A little misleading, isn't it?
+John Clark Yep. All vehicle manufacturers do it.
+PorkyLovesMud manufacturing pissing contest
75k made on mexico ?
Look at the Cab-to-bed alignment @ :32
FIAT quality right there. It's a shame these trucks cost so much and the quality doesn't match it.
time will tell, but knowing friends who work in a ram dealer and they keep increasing the torque numbers and he keeps seeing more failures. would they just clue in that refine the truck for towing 25k and leave it there, towing 30k is basicly over kill, but when they get this thing to the IKE we shall see what happens
I'm getting one DODGE # 1 towing
$75k is kinda high for a Dodge. But I've seen Ford F150's for $65k
Anyway, which brand will hit a 1000 lbs of torque first in a diesel truck?
i like The ram cool!!!!!
