Fingers crossed that Fords new fuel system doesn't crap the bed like the previous gens do. That is the Powerstrokes weak spot, the basic engine is a beast, but if you go to forums, the fuel system is the biggest bitchfest. They don't like water, any little bit of water in the fuel and kiss the CP4 goodbye, which then contaminates the rest of the fuel system and it ALL has to be replaced. Hope Ford has fixed that.

Oh what ever. I've seen an 85 ramcharger with a 318 pull one of those stupid plastic crapbags AND a 16' flatbed loaded with red oak rounds up a muddy hill. I'd bet a 76 ramcharger with the factory lockers and a 440 would pull that easily if you put it on a bumper pull. Plus I've watched my dad rebuild his carburetor in the rain with a flashlight and a couple of screwdrivers. If you break down in one of those computerized obsolescence chasers you'd better have some killer AAA. I've always wondered, what happens when they stop updating the android os that controls your a/c and brakes? And what's with the ground effect skirts? You call it a truck and you only have like six inches of clearance under your plastic bumper? Also they look stupid. Ten speed gearbox is sweet though...

    • @revwroth3698
      @revwroth3698 4 роки тому +1

@@anthonyc1883 they're not that hard to find or necessarily that old. But what i tell everyone is research a car they like, see if they held up, find one and fix it up. If you absolutely need a ride immediately I don't know what to tell you but I swear it's cheaper (especially in the long run) to pick up an older vehicle that's dependable and go over it to make sure everything is good than to buy a new car for what, like $40,000 at least? I have a 93 Nissan pathfinder that i paid $900 for and since then I've put about another $4000 into it. Part of that was getting a newer and slightly bigger engine and installing it. Admittedly I did most of the work myself, thus sacrificing time to save money, but even if I'd had a mechanic do it all it would probably have been less than 10,000 more. I expect at least 300,000 miles from the engine before I have to rebuild it again, as long as I keep up with the maintenance, and I already found out that I can get another transmission for about $800 that's more modern if /when mine goes bad. For me the bottom line is that I have a very reliable and surprisingly capable vehicle that can be had by almost anyone for less than 20 grand. I feel like my kids are safer in the back with the double walled steel body and I'm already looking into adding some modern safety features like blind spot monitors, lane change assist, and backup camera. Plus my air conditioning isn't reliant on an Android tablet mounted in the dash that allegedly stops getting service updates after a short time, my brakes aren't relayed through a computer, and I don't have any rubber bands in my transmission. I actually got rear ended on a freeway by a 2017 chevy equinox and that POS was almost completely destroyed while I just had a few dents and a smashed tail light. That incident really illustrated the difference in the way they make cars these days for me.

We had to send a man to the dealership to make the appointments as they don't answer the phone. The first one at 40K miles was $1300. out of warranty. The 2nd at 34K just made it under the warranty but they found $500. other things that needed attention. Had to send a man back to the dealer to see if they were done.

Those trucks are made to squat under load. Just because one squats less doesn’t mean it’s better. That marginal increase in squat could mean dramatically better driving dynamics while towing and increased stability and ride quality.

I agree. A truck should be allowed to squat a certain amount for its max tongue weight. This would allow the suspension to get into that "sweet spot" for both ride and handling. Otherwise, it would be too heavily sprung, and have neither. Axle hop is a bitch on a slick curve.

I have driven the 2020 6.6 Duramax at length and for whatever reason the exhaust brake is nowhere near as aggressive on this truck compared to 2017-2019 L5P. I can see why they needed so many brake applications. Also, after losing to the 2017 L5P Silverado Duramax dually in the last Ike Gauntlet, Ford sure did a great job of making sure they had the best performing truck!

I would like to see the real world every day cost to own figures for these trucks, including RAM. An across the board one for one comparison. I had a 2019 F-250 w/ 6.7 for work recently and absolutely loved the truck although I'm a GMC/Chevy person at heart, and for me, the Ford set the benchmark for a HD truck. I haven't driven the GM offerings or the RAM so I haven't had to get a feel for which truck I would prefer. Great video TFL. You are conducting the tests that other outlets only talk about in their reviews, and for the guys (and Gals) buying HD trucks, this will certainly help in many decision making processes.

When I’m coming out of the tunnel and want the truck to work for me I set my Select Shift to 4th gear or 5th gear depending on the traffic conditions. The truck has no problem holding and decreasing speed without touching the brakes. If you set cruise at 35 mph and the truck is increasing speed it was in a gear two high to maintain the set speed. I like the testing and I appreciate what you guys do, but can you try to show more of the gauges during the down hill and up hill runs?? If that’s not what people want I get it, but people like me want to see how the truck actually works as well as your review. For example, how high did the Chevy and Ford rev under grade braking? The Chevy can rev to at least 4,500 RPM under exhaust braking and I would like to know if it did. I loved how you used cruise control and having used exhaust braking with cruise control before, I believe a 10 mph range would be better than only letting it speed up 5. This would give the trucks a better chance to show how powerful their exhaust braking is. I believe the Chevy’s is more advanced than the Fords, since it can rev higher. Thanks again for all the hard work! You guys are very dedicated to getting the testing done.

I’d be curious to see how true that is now that there is the 10 speed. With all the ratios it really just means the trans picks a different gear to make up for the rear ratio.

    • @acdii
      @acdii 4 роки тому +12

The 10 Speed is a game changer, the gearing more than makes up for the rear end, so chances are, it would not be as good as one might think. The first gear in the 10 speed is VERY low. Check out the 6.7 and 7.3 dyno runs to see which gears they needed to test in between the 3.55 and 4.10 gears. My F350 has 3.55 with the 6 speed, that 2020 would leave mine sitting still with the same rear gear, regardless of the HP and TQ. There is a ratio chart floating around that compares the 6 speed and 10 speed ratios and the final drive with the different rear ratios, the 10 speed with 3.55 is actually better than the 6 speed with 4.10. If you slap 4.10 on the 10 speed, it might pull better, but would also use much more fuel due to the higher engine RPM, and hunt through the gears. Ford has the right idea, gearing that gets the job done and gets good fuel efficiency.
Something to keep in mind with gearing, when towing/hauling, you want the engine in it's most efficient power band, when you are racing, you want to get the RPM's to the ground as fast as possible, so shorter gears are great for racing, but suck when it comes to putting the engine right where it works best. When done right, it gets into one gear that works the best for the engine and stays there, when wrong, the transmission hunts to keep the engine in it's power band.
So would you rather have a truck that stays in gear, or one that moves off the line faster with a load and then hunts constantly to try to maintain speed? Don't know about you, but I'll take the one that doesn't hunt.

    • @jnk26
      @jnk26 4 роки тому +25

@@acdii the only different between the 3.55 and the 4.10 is torque multiplication to the ground and rolling speed for the same engine speed. In 6th gear(1.28:1) with the 4.10, climbing the hill at the hp rating(2800rpm) the truck is doing 50mph. With the 3.55 it's doing 57.7mph. Difference is the amount of torque getting to the ground. Because hp is just an equation of engine torque x rpm we can figure torque from hp like this 475hp@2800rpm = 890lbft(475hp x 5252 ÷ 2800rpm). We know the transmission ratio for 6th is 1.28:1(1.277:1). So with the 3.55 at 57.7mph(2800rpm in 6th) there is 4044lbft(890lbft x 1.28 x 3.55) available at the axle shaft. With the 4.10 at 50mph its 4670lbft at the axle shaft. More leverage to do work just at a slower pace. So many people misunderstand what horsepower is. It's an equation that determines HOW FAST WORK GETS DONE. Not how how much work can be done. The 445hp gm did the same amount of work, just slower. And 30 hp at 2800rpm is only 65lbft difference
      GM 445hp@2800rpm= 835lbft
      Ford 2019
      450hp@2800= 844lbft
      Ford 2020
      475hp@2800= 890lbft
      Ram HO Cummins
      400hp@2800=750lbft
Ram with the 4.10 isnt going to win any race up the mountain. Off the line, it just out pulls the GM. After that the GM will walk it.
      GM
      910lbft x 4.61 x 3.42 = 14347lbft
      Ram
      1000lbft x 3.75 x 4.10 = 15375lbft
If hp dictated the amount of work to be done, semi trucks in Canada would need 1000hp engines to do the work we do. I have a 500hp/1850lbft highway tractor and it pulls 140k all day everyday. With 3.25:1 axles. My 450hp F350 should be able to do 126k because its 10% less power. But its couldn't do 80k even with the same 12speed trans because the torque is what is moving the load not the hp. 500hp@1700rpm =1544lbft. That engine creates so much torque through the usable rpm band.
      1850lbft@1100=387hp
      1850lbft@1200=422hp
      1850lbft@1300=457hp
      1850lbft@1350=475hp
      1750lbft@1400=466hp
      1750lbft@1500=499.6hp
      1650lbft@1600=502hp
      1550lbft@1700=501hp
The leverage(torque) is doing the work, only thing that is changing is the rate(speed) is being done at. Same applies with smaller engines
The 3.5HO EB has 450hp just like my 6.7 powerstroke and many semis. The EcoBoost would never do the work of my powerstroke and same goes for the powerstroke to the semi
      450hp@5000=472lbft(EB)
      450hp@2800=844lbft(PSD)
      450hp@1900=1243lbft(dd13)
450hp@1400=1688lbft(Cat C15). The leverage is dictated the limit of work to be done HP RATING is how fast is gets done. The reason my truck does well at moving 140k is the 1850lbft x 11.74(1st gear) x 3.25:1 axle(70586lbft) taking off. And cruising at 60mph its rolling along at 1300rpm(1850lbft) x 0.78:1(12th gear) x 3.25:1(axle)=4689lbft@ the axle. To be truthful the 3.55 ithe the 1050lbft could maintain the 140k load at 57.7mph but the slightest increase of load(grade) would kill the momentum instantly. It's the getting it moving that's the issue not maintaining it

@@jnk26 I would like to see the dyno run with the 4.10 that was done with the 3.55, only change would be the rear, same truck too. Would be interesting to see the difference the gearing makes, mainly because the 7.3 had to run in a lower gear on the Dyno with the shorter rear end.
I have towed with 3 different 3.5 EB, one with the 6 speed and 3.15 gears, was a beast on top end, one was 3.55 with the 6 speed, towed slightly better in a higher gear than the 3.15 did, but overall pulled the same, the 10 speed with the 3.55 though, pulled like it has 3.73 in the rear, and stayed in OD for the most part, where the others would be hunting.
Just saying, the 10 speed makes the rear gearing not as important as it used to be. The advantages that the shorter gears gave before, are not as great anymore.

The Ford got the same MPG as the GMC while performing the same amount of work faster. Therefore it won not only the uphill time test, but also the MPG test. This is a common misunderstanding on this channel. There are videos where one truck flies up the hill way faster than another, but gets worse MPG and therefore loses the MPG test. A true MPG comparison would have the faster truck pace itself to the slower one.

It's miles/gallon. There is no unit of time in the quantity, hence the speed is irrelevant. The only way the vehicles' speed figures into the calculation is if you are accounting for aerodynamic drag and wanted to give the faster vehicle "credit" for having had to overcome greater drag (since energy expended due to drag will scale with the square of the vehicle's speed). But your comment doesn't mention this so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

I am still a Ford fan despite what I am about to tell you. I tow a 45-foot 5th wheel 17k lbs with Reese Box Gooseneck. My last 2 trucks have been F-350s DRW 6.7 diesel. I owned a 2018 F-350 Lariat DRW and put 80K miles on it never had an issue with it. I traded it in for 2020 F-350 DRW Limited. I was day two into my month-long Colorado vacation while towing the 5th wheel when my engine light came on and told me to reduce engine power and it throttle me down to 30 MPH. Long story short, the truck died on me, and I found out water got into the fuel system and rust was on the high-pressure fuel pump and damaged the entire fuel system. Truck has 27K miles and the entire fuel system must be replaced, which the cost will be $15,000, thankfully insurance is covering it.
So being bummed about a month-long vacation that was planned, I decided to purchase a new truck so I could continue my vacation while my F-350 was being repaired. Giving the COVID truck crisis shortage I got lucky and found a brand new 2021 RAM 3500 limited diesel DRW $84K, I decided to give the RAM a try since I have a few friends that own them and swears by them. It's a beautiful truck, but it's not for me. I miss my Ford.
Issue #1 > For starters, pulling up hills, this does not have the power that my F-350 has. I have the pedal on the floor going up hills and the speed of the RAM decreases in speed. Same hills with my Ford, doesn't slow down, in fact I can gain speed going up. The RAM has 410 hp and the ford has 475 hp.
Issue #2 > When driving around a curve the steering sticks and wants to stay in the curve! Very strange and freaked me. I google this and found that a lot of people are experiencing the same problem, it's a rack and pinion issue.
Issue #3 > when I put the truck in reverse sometimes it makes a loud clunking sound, like the u joint or drive shaft is lose.
Issue #4 > The new larger screens that are putting in is very complicated, you must go through a lot of steps just to turn on the A/C. The user interface is way too complicated and not easy and straightforward like Ford.
Issue #5 > space inside the cab feels cramped, I am 6'3" and the windshield height is lower, I feel like I can see out of the truck as good as the ford. Also the truck is narrower I think the RAM is 79 inches and the ford is 96. This makes a big difference in my opinion when you're towing, you can see behind better. Also on the passenger side floor board, there is a huge hump where the transmission is giving you little space on the floor board. Ford does not have that issue.
Issue #6 > Comfort, overall, the RAM is ok and comfortable, but I feel my ford is more comfortable. However, I do feel the RAM is quieter on the inside cab.
Issue #7 > Sounds system, speaker started shorting out when I crank up the volume from time to time. Sound system in my Ford is way better, keep in mind both trucks are fairly close in price range.
I can't give the RAM too bad of a rap because it's kept me on the road and on my vacation, but it’s just not for me. I really wanted to like it but there are way more features I miss on my Ford. I'm selling it after my trip and along with the Ford after it comes out of the shop. Then I am planning to order a new Ford 2022. I know all trucks have their issues including Ford but I would rather drive a Ford than a RAM any day.
