Hi there :) have you listened to/read The Second Apocalypse series by R Scott Bakker? The first book is called Prince of Nothing. It's like if you took all the works of Tolkien, the entire ASOIAF series, and some of the darkest eras of our own history, mixed them together and infused the resulting concoction with some weird mind altering substance that causes strange hallucinations and terrifying dreams. So violent, so epic, so freaking awesome. I highly, highly recommend the entire series for anyone exploring the darker and more obscure aspects of the fantasy sci fi genre :D Honestly, those books are up there with some of the strangest, darkest, and most epic works of fantasy fiction I have ever come across :D

I read "Magician Apprentice" in 84. As a solid fan of fantasy, having already read all of Tolkiens works, i was searching for something of comparable quality, having found so many of the D&D offerings of the day to be lacking the depth i was searching for. Feist quickly found a fan in me and I've read the "RIFTWAR SAGA" countless times since the late 80`s. I'm glad to have found this so far. As we all do, when we read a book we hear our own interpretations of the voices of our favorite characters. So far, nothing has violated my historical sense of right. I hope everyone who listens to these stories finds the joy i found in reading them.

In 1982 I was mainly enthralled with the works of David Gemmell and Terry Pratchett, this I missed somehow. Thoroughly enjoying the story and glad I missed it in 1982 as the new world, new story and new author are worth a new discovery. After listening to the introduction it makes me wonder how may great stories are ruined by publishing houses. Also, it is good to hear a story not blemished by modern notions being shoehorned into the tale, just because it is thought modern stories need an injection of modern "ideals" to make the story relevant.

@@auricstorm Probably used the wrong word. I mean any modern behaviour, societal norms or political ideas. The author has created and described a believable medieval world and peoples. How medieval people thought and behaved is utterly alien to us today and so a modern thought or behaviour would stand out and not sit well in the world the author has created. It makes for a better and more believable storyline.

Mannnnn......I really didnt want to admit it....but I love this damn story so far. My boyfriend has been bugging me to read it and going on and onnnnn about it for years now. I am stubborn tho....and would always roll my eyes and put it off. Rarely does anyone's "book suggestions" land for me. This one is the exception. I have an affection already for pug and the drake sounds alot like my cat yato. Now I'm gonna have to deal w his "I told you so" smirking forever. Siiiiigh
    .... Damn it.

I don't think he pronounced all the names right. For example Liam should be "Lee-um" but he pronounces it "Li-YAM", which can't be right. Also I think it's Cry-dee, not Cri-dee. And the old English Tomas is pronounced Tu-moss, instead of the modern Thomas "Tom-mus style. But I could be wrong. I think he pronounced Arutha right though, which is a tricky one. And I'm not sure about Rillanon, I put the emphasis on "Rill" "Rill-uh-non" and he pronounces it "rill-AN-on."
