I had NO IDEA!!!! I was browsing and decided to listen to Book1. A week (now) I just finished the series!!! I could not stop. Well done. But you also posted the audio to your youtube channel and well. . .we are not worthy (bows). I just went back and made sure every single one got a thumbs up. I came BACK to this one to post because anyone wondering if they should would look here and my answer is. . . ABSOLUTELY if you enjoy a good story and the last part. . . .is just wow (as in insanely well done). What an absolute gift. Thank you sir.

I am 57 years old. I have been reading sword and sorcery style books. Mercedes lackey, Elizabeth moon, Andre Norton, Raymond e feist, Tolkien, Asimov's, bradbury, eddings. This book is very well written. This world is well created, with no inconsistent magic use. Well developed characters. We learn not just what the characters do, we have their backgrounds to understand their motivation. I cannot believe you have over 30 books and I have never heard of you. Your books are definitely better than the average fantasy fiction books. They are definitely better than the books in the middle of quality and are in the top group of books. Not up to Tolkien, but as you write more and more, I wouldn't be surprised if you enter the top tier of this genre.

@@JamesEWisherbooks I really am actually. If one layman, such as I, may constructively criticize one matter - I wish you had tied some information more into the story rather than having characters express it directly, in a way that it felt unnatural, at least to me, but that's about it. The flow of the story is just at the right pace and as others have mentioned, it's not the stereotypical cringeworthy arc which extends to the characters also.

This book was very good, I have to say I enjoyed this thoroughly. It just goes to show that you can’t underestimate people, and everybody has a breaking point. I wish that more people understood that before they get to the point where Otto and the prince got to. I don’t think Otto is a bad character, I don’t even think that what he did was wrong. His wife was the wrong one, and the king was in the wrong as well. You cannot sacrifice the lies of the people who are dependent upon you if you’re in power. So I say, in a lot of ways, they saved him from himself. Instead of going down in history as the king who led the country to ruin, he’ll be seen as the catalyst for revolution. I cannot wait to see what the next book in the series is gonna bring. Well done.

I've read most of the Soul Bound Saga, and all of the Aegis of Merlin. Comparatively, this is your best work.
    WARNING : spoilers ahead!
I think the reason for this story's high level of success is the character of Otto.
The key difference between him and your other stories main characters is that Otto is active, where as characters like Conryu and Joran are passive. What I mean by this is that Otto drives the story. The big events happen because of him. He isn't just reacting to things, he is actively doing stuff. All of Conryu's actions are a reaction to things happening. If he is left alone, nothing interesting would really happen, since he himself just wants a peaceful and calm life. That's not a bad character trait in real life. In a story, however, it just comes across as boring. The same thing applies with Joran, though to a lesser degree (I might be wrong, I haven't finished the series). Active characters are much more compelling.
Then there is the question of consistency. I think a character is well thought out if their beliefs and opinions are consistent with their actions (unless a character trait of theirs is to be inconsistent, that is). Otto has a single goal, and he will do anything to accomplish it. And he does some really bad things, but that is consistent with his character. And the story doesn't shy away from showing how bad Otto can be. He is not a hero. He doesn't care about the well-being of the people unless it helps or hinders his goal. He is power-hungry and brutal. Yet the readers are under no illusions that he isn't.
Joran on the other hand, is opportunistic and selfish. He supports and vehemently defends a slavery-based society, simply because he stands to gain from its continued existence, and stands to lose from its downfall. Yet he is presented as a good guy. He is the hero of the story. That depiction seems unearned. It's like the story is shying away from openly admitting that he is not a good guy.
Both the Soul Bound Saga, and the Aegis of Merlin are good stories, with good world-building and interesting side character's but man do I dislike Conryu and Joran. I found myself rooting against them for most of the time reading, which is kind of funny XD. Otto was a breath of fresh air. He was consistent and drove the story forward.
    Thanks for reading :)
ps. I forgot to mention that, while I am putting this comment here on the first audiobook of the portal wars saga, I have read the whole thing

My thoughts exactly lmao. Although I don't think Otto is the only reason for the high success, I think he is the main. The lore of the Arcane Lords, and other parts of the world building were just great. Happy new years !!!

The final line he says to a certain female character at the end is a cold one, never expected this from a fricking MC.

I have this tendency, when I enjoy a story enough, I step away from it for a couple months, a year, sometimes more, so that down the road the details are foggy enough that I can take in the entire plot all over again relishing its unfolding. I still remember being thrilled the books were uploaded 1 after another with only a weeks wait in between.
