  • Who ever said you need to spend a lot of money to get a very good cold air intake? There are three reasons to update a cold air intake when modifying your car. 1. Air Volume 2. Air Temp 3. Appearance There you have it. You can spend $800 for and intake that meets all three, but what if you can live without number 3? If you can, then this video is for you! All parts can be sourced through ECS Tuning and I am prepared to provide you a link right now!

    But do you think the upgrades pipes really make a big difference? Just by looks, it doesn’t seem that much more restrictive, its just not made of metal/silicone

    Thank you for posting this!! I'm going to try this on my 2019 GLI. I only have 20k miles on it, so I've been hesitant to mod it due to the factory warranty. I think I'll do this and add the neuspeed power module (I've heard this doesn't void warranty - planning to take it off when I bring it in).
    Anyways - appreciate the video. I subscribed. Looking forward to checking out more of your stuff. Hoping you have more on 2.0 TSI mods like this.

      Hello! Great to hear from you! No water issues. Now, if you were to attempt to drive through a significant amount of standing water or flooding, then I would expect to have a water issue. If you are overly concerned, just add an additional drain to the air box. Thanks for commenting and for watching!

    • @Driven2Compete
      @Driven2Compete  3 роки тому

      There are a number of aftermarket cais that offer a product similar to the product I modified. There are drain holes and other design cues to keep water from being drawn into the engine. So, I believe the modification to be safe and efficient as long as you have tuning to support the additional air flow.

      @@Driven2Compete I live in the EU, I have a 2.0TDI though, but as far as I know its the same intake/airbox. For some reason I dont have that unit either. Might buy it at the Vw dealership, should be about 15 euros if I recall correctly. Just to see what difference it will make. The gap could be useful in my case since I drive a diesel with a particle filter, which needs to regen once in a while and when it does that, the EGT goes skyrocket. The gap might cool the engine bay down a little bit quicker.
      After opening the right side of the intake there was a noticable difference to be honest. I didnt dyno it before opening it up though.

      Yes! It flowed so much that the stage 1+ tune on it couldn't adjust for the additional air and lower temps. I kept getting a lean condition at the bottom O2 sensor after the cat. @@Driven2Compete I just cut out the air duct openings this weekend on my '17 GTI - a couple weeks before that I installed a CTS turbo inlet elbow and CTS open intake. It's great for sound but I think there is some power loss vs the closed airbox. I found this piece on ECSTuning's website called the "Performance Inlet Scoop Kit" that I think would be a nice addition to this airbox mod. It creates a vent on the intake side of the grille and also a scoop from the grille up to the intake duct for a DIY ram-air effect. Check it out!

      The only real difference you're gonna feel is the aftermarket turbo Inlet pipe. The dyno data is out there already that it gives 5hp low end and 10hp mid range with added torque. You're gonna feel a small but noticeable difference with the turbo Inlet pipe. What he has done in the video is basically a nice budget cold air intake. You're gonna need a stage 1 tune afterwards to feel a REAL difference.

    How do you know for sure that’s going to improved flow by a great amount. A racingline drop in filter will do the same.. my opinion a lot of those mods are just for novelty purposes. For performance it’s not worth it.. i have a mk6 gti with racingline mods like racingline hybrid turbo , turbo back exhaust and cold intake and intercooler. With Oem plus software. Do buy things ,because someone says it will give you more power. Spend you money to mod wisely. I spend $5000 in my mods and all proven power.. Cheers

    • @luissheppard2342
      @luissheppard2342 4 роки тому +1

      Well, for starters, any air that would have flow through the opened (now closed) section would have only one way to go....towards the airbox. Also, drilling or filing out the N/S section of the scoop (which is also blocked off) would also increase flow. That's basic physics.
      As for the drop in filter doing the same. Not really. If you have only one way the feed us coming in, then a filter alone won't increase flow as much as having multiple entry points of flow. Plus, the surface area of a panel filter is less than a standard paper unit, so it might be more free flowing, but it won't filter as well.

      This mod should be considered as additioanl benefit over drop in high flow filters.
      I am on IE stage 1 and IE DSG tune, for reference.
      I just did snow guard removal and opened up the intake grid as shown in the video. One very obvious difference can be reproduced is by tapping the paddle quickly.
      Something like from + 5% throttle and let it go back to where it was and then + 5% again. Doing this at around 1 second or less interval in sport mode or manual.
      What would be noticed is OEM felt 'lagging'/'choking' when transitioning from the two different gas demands.
      It does not react as quickly as after the mods.
      My guess is the OEM is good enough for the amount of air the engine needs, just may not be deliverying that amount as quickly. For example, maybe when changing the demands of air intake so quickly, there exists some kind of vaccum/pressure difference in the narrow tunnels, where for a split second it does not work as efficent.
      By looking at the OEM design, it appears to be for the function of seperating larger particles from getting into the intake, since there is a height difference from the left-side open hole to the air path way that goes to the righ to where the air box is.
      I don't want to pay for the expensive aftermaket intakes for the reseason they do not provide cooler intake air over stock. I have seen tests supporting this idea from the Humble Mechanic and the Engineer Explaned.
      They do look cool and also solve the response isssue I described above.

    Not really a fan of how much information is missing in a lot of these videos. I also have to say that after doing an MST TIP with their intake piping and an AFE filter I like the sound and the feel but it has aggravated some things like the funky idle that the MK7's sometimes exhibit on startup. I was under the assumption that something was wrong but after looking around I found a bunch of people reporting the same thing. Car feels good when I am driving and a majority of the time it starts fine, but after sitting for 30 minutes or an hour sometimes it feels a bit reluctant.

    • @Driven2Compete
      @Driven2Compete  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure what information is missing from the video? I try to give alot more information then other videos. If you have questions, I'm glad to help. As for idle problems, I truly think its tuning. With my IE stage 2 tune, the car runs, drives, and performs flawlessly. Honestly, it's hard to believe a tune is that well sorted out that there aren't any quirks that randomly show up.

    The factory Turbo Inlet is NOT restrictive.
    I will say this:
    The Throttle Body doesn't care about the size of the Intake or the difference in "Diameter" of the Inlet Pipe - even on a larger turbo. The Factory Inlet pipe does a great job at CENTERING the air volume (so the air stream hits the Inducer blades in a favorable direct manner) AND it also generates VELOCITY.
    Drop in a higher flow filter and call it done. All of this "old school" ideology only promotes the continued SELL of aftermarket parts.
    You want more power? Then get another turbo....

    • @flipgurujn
      @flipgurujn 4 роки тому

      @@robotcowhand1276 I agree. Bastardizing/upgrading an intake alone does nothing and you may even lose power. So you're saying you only need an intake if you have an IS38? • @KOL630
      @KOL630 3 роки тому

      I agree too. Tried loads of aftermarket filters and intakes in my time and you just lose torque instead. The engine won’t suck more air in than it needs no mater how many holes are in front of the filter! May sound a bit louder but it’s a placebo effect.
