Not sure why, but using the new blender and for some reason, I can't select face's the way you are. My vertex points are showing so have to individually select the "dots" to make the face selection. any idea how to make it so its just lines like yours? Great tutorial series. Most I've watched don't actually explain what they are doing or the keys they are using. This was amazing and educational. Ty!
Great Tutorial. Well paced. a little jumbled at times but was still easy to follow. I'm still pretty new o blender myself but a few tools/tips i can share is: 1. while extruding if you use the other mouse click it will set it back to its original spot. this is good for scaling and grabbing a little more accurately. 2. Same with the loop cut. if you use the other mouse button it will always place it in the center of the faces. and you dont have to face select to get it to work. 3. ALT clicking will select an entire row or column of connected faces lines or vertices. this can be tricky to use but is helpful if you can figure it out. again though very nice tutorial. Im subscribing!
Corey B thank you so much! Those are amazing tips as well I hope people stopping by read those! I'm learning as I go too I'm from a programming background but blender is a hell of a lot of fun :) thank you so much for the encouragement!!!
Hey all! I'm glad that so many of you have found this tutorial for making a building useful! Some of you have asked about texturing the building (or other objects) so I've created a new tutorial about a really easy (AND FUN!) way of doing that!. ua-cam.com/video/R84-dB_BZjI/v-deo.html
3:42 - Can you tell me why you chose to use the "Dimensions" properties to change the X and Y values of your object instead of just scaling those properties?
The reason I use dimensions as opposed to scale is because I can choose (in the unit of measurement I'm used to) the real world sizes I want easily. Like 1.75 Meters is the average human height so in my head I make dimensions of my models in relation to that. The real reason (that I didn't know at the time of making this video lol) is that the scale is the relative size of the object, while the dimensions are the actual size. So if you change the scale it can mess up your texturing when you go to do that. When you've changed somethings dimensions then hit CTRL-A you will have a larger or smaller model and the scale will still be 1.0. In a lot of my videos I probably did use the scale but I really shouldn't have lol.
nice starter, but you should have used face merge to get a cleaner surface in the beginning after you done the roof, cleaning up the rough form before you add detail will allow a much cleaner build goign forward
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It is exactly what I needed and your manner and voice are really excellent at conveying exactly what I need to do. Thank you :-)
Thankfully someone helped me out with that problem. If i ever finish my game and make more videos hopefully they'll sound a lot better hahaha. Thanks! :)
Hey, ManekiNeko. I am having a small issue with my Mesh in Blender. I was wondering if you would have some idea of what to do. Here is my issue. I use Blender and Cinema 4D lite R19 to open and manage different types of 3D model files so I can convert them to OBJ files and use them in Element 3D for animating. When I open a WRL file in Cinema 4D Lite R19, the model is nice and smooth looking. I would have been happy with the model as it was, accept that whole thing was almost one single object, so I needed to open the WRL in Blender and and try to separate the mesh into several different parts that can be individually animated in After Effects through Element 3D, because as far as I know, C4D Lite R19 (a plugin version for After Effects) lacks the ability to do so.... and here's where the problem begins. Like I said earlier, when I open the WRL in C4D Lite, it's nice and smooth and looks good. However, when I take that Same exact WRL and open it in Blender, it's jagged, rough and has looks very "geometric." I didn't think much of this and did a bunch of work and exported the object as an OBJ to open in Element 3D, thinking that it would be "smoothed-out" in the file exporting process, but I was wrong! It looks exactly how it did in Blender, hard-edged and "geometric!" not smooth and soft as it did in C4D Lite! ...No good. So my question is, do you have ANY idea as to why opening the WRL in Blender causes it to look hard-edged, rigged and Geometric? In Blender, I have tried "smoothing" the mesh and that just tares it. I have tried "Subdividing" and "Subdividing-Smooth" properties and neither of them work. I was going to try a "Shrink-wrap" technique I learned form UA-cam in an attempt to "re-mesh" the surface. I just can't understand why the object goes from being nice and smooth in C4D Lite... to hard-edged, jagged and "geometric" in Blender. Any ideas? Either way, thanks for whatever help you can offer!
Hmmmm I really don't know to be honest. I've never used Cinema 4D. If you have a place you can upload your model and send me a link I can take a look and try to figure it out though!
I can try to do that. Though, I noticed that when I exported another OBJ from Blender, the Mesh is still not "smooth." Instead, it has lots of edges. Is there some part of the modeling/creating process that helps to make your Mesh have soft round, edges instead of jagged, hard edges?
There's two places (at least) that you can specify smooth. One is when you're in object mode there's a smooth option. Then when you're in edit mode with faces, edges, or vertex selected you can find smooth on the left hand panel there also.
Drinner D Well different Softwares sometimes handle the same jobs in a different way. So if blender doesnt know how to read the smoothing information, it ignores it. Standard go would be to turn it on smooth shading in object mode. Now everything looks smooth, but that includes hard edges. Those you can sharpen by (Ctrl+E) marking them sharp and applying an edge split modifier, which would give you pointy edges. If they should be a bit rounded, use the bevel modifier and hit the weight option. Now, in Editmode, when you press N and look at the items tab there is a bevelweight variable that you can change for every edge individually. 0= no bevel, which leaves it smooth 1= bevel, which creates a clean looking smoothed out hard edge...
Yup! I use mostly use textures.com you can sign up for a free membership and you'll get like 10 free textures a day (which is probably a good amount)! Then you'll have to learn how to get them on the mesh you made. I have a basic tutorial on that, i plan to make a much better one soon (i hope!) The one i have now is... ua-cam.com/video/XEcLu131p7I/v-deo.html

Did you select the parts that you want to scale? You can select multiple parts as ManekiNeko said in the video by holding shift and selecting the parts you want with right click.

Cristiano I can’t be certain but that can sometimes happen if the scale hasn’t been applied. Try going into object view (tab) doing control A and then click location and scale. Then go back to edit mode and try again. If that doesn’t work you can fix that by scaling that face on the Y axis only by hitting S then hitting Y on the keyboard and moving the mouse.
