Considering a Mini ITX mobo fits inside these shells, making an emulation machine out of a dead Dreamcast would keep up exceptionally well. M.2 drives are also at 1 terabyte capacities, so you can fit the whole library onto it.
@Bubblegum Crash Personally I don't want them behind my TV either, as I find even something like that distracting when I'm gaming, or watching content. I just want either a dark room or a dimmable lamp on low at best.
You definitely overpaid for this. There is a cheaper option on eBay right now with all the mods + GDEMU (genuine, but even with the clone would be great), with controller and VMU with the same color at $570. You can 3D print the logo aside, if you really wanted it. And the leds... maybe it's your cup of tea. I have a Dreamcast with DCHDMI, clone GDEMU, Noctua Fan, Pico PSU, battery mod, fuse mod, overclocked at 240Mhz in a black shell (I like a black Sega console). I never actually calculated everything because it was not made in one sitting. But I don't think I paid $400 for everything.
I agree the cost isnt $800 but if you go with a clear white shell you won't get a controller and vmu to match for less than $120 rn the official clear gear was a Japan only release n they're pretty rare
I got a clear purple one, with psu power mod, noctua fan mod, GDEMU (clone), black and blue cover for the GDEMU, bluetooth controller support so i can hook up my ps4 controller or xbox controller and i got it all for like $300. Easiest console mods ive ever done literally 0 soldering just gotta drop it all in and swap the shell. Only kinda sketchy part is drilling a hole in the controller port plate for the bluetooth connection button. Considering doing a HDMI mod next
Hey MJR - those standard CR2032s can blow the controller deck PCB and/or fuse. The board is specifically designed to recharge a LR2032 battery. I would not recommend switching between the two types at all. Just an FYI from experience and research.
Just wanted to say I had Dragons Hoard Gaming Mod my Dreamcast and they went above and beyond what they had to do. it looks and works great and I appreciate the care they put into making sure I was happy. If you guys see this thanks again and I highly recommend them.
Dragon's Hoard Gaming is the absolute best!!! Matt is one of the nicest and most honest guy I have ever met. His work is nothing but perfection. You want it done he can do it. Whatever your imagination can think of. Shit he turned a damn toaster into a regular Nintendo.
Its like taking an old black Plymouth Duster, a badass old muscle car, putting big 20" rims on it, and running multicolored LEDs all around the outside, with a new exhaust that makes it super loud. Good job
Looks nice, but $800 in total? Best to put that money towards something else, in my opinion. I understand keeping the optical drive in there was your choice, but it is disappointing there's no USB or SD card ODE installed for spending that much on the hardware.
Except he didn’t pay $800. The total cost would have been for anyone else, but the mentioned getting a nice little discount. I imagine he payed maybe half that or less and the LED mod was thrown in. He does have 700K+ subs so it’s worth it to the seller to offer that in return for some advertisement.. And if you use the Pound with the mClassic, the results would be much closer for the comparison. Also, LED mods were an early 2010’s thing.
This game collecting and the price tag on items is getting to out of hand. I spend hundreds on items I owned when I was kid and sold, sellers are overpricing stuff and people are actually buying. This 800 dollar dreamcast is ridiculous
If it makes you feel any better disc based media is one of the worst investments you can make as a collector for yourself and potential resell value, every disc is going to deteriorate and it's already happening to Saturn and Original Xbox games. So these collectors with walls of disc based games are going to be in for a surprise when they can't play or resell them. They'll be completely worthless.
@Billy William Yes you can already back your games up to a hard drive or download them from the internet (pre Xbox One / PS4). That's not the problem, the problem is people spend a lot of money on these games so once they go bad they will be worthless and they will lose money. Copying a game to a disc is worthless in terms of monetary value, not to mention illegal if you don't own the original game. By backing up the game data you will always have the game, but you won't be able to sell it and your console has to be modified to be able to play it. For collectors buying disc based media of any kind is an extremely dumb idea from a financial standpoint.
@Billy William You can download backed up games all day from the internet for free, so people aren't going to be inclined to spend money on a disc that doesn't work just so they can legally play the digital backup and again is completely worthless once the data on the original disc is gone or corrupted, the discs themselves will literally begin to rot. Have you ever seen an old CD from the 90's?, many of them look dirty under the coating because they are breaking down. All consoles except for cartridge based systems and the Dreamcast require hardware modification to play backup games from a disc or hard drive / flash drive. The Dreamcast will natively support backups in .CDI format which is a butchered version of the game to fit onto a CD-R, this is due to a flaw in the copy protection used with the GD-ROM. Cartridge based systems can use a flash cart where all the games can be stored on an SD card, the console itself usually require no modification however the PSIO for the PlayStation that plugs into the serial port of earlier models requires a chip to be soldered onto the motherboard. At the end of the day if all you want to do is play games and don't care about the legality of piracy then just mod your system to play games from a hard drive (Xbox, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, PS2, PS3), it saves space and many older games are getting insanely expensive. Panzer Dragoon Saga on the Sega Saturn sells for over $500 used so some games simply aren't obtainable outside of piracy for most people.
@Billy William That's the point, once the data is corrupted there won't be anything there left of value, would you really find just a case and manual valuable?, even they will begin to fade and deteriorate. And that's why I think collectors are a plague to the gaming community, they drive up prices so people who just want to play them can't afford them and they just let them sit on the shelf and rot. Games are meant to be played, not used as display pieces.
Wow. How good does the dreamcast games look still 20years later with the hd upgrades? As more time passes the more gutted I am that the dreamcast never got a fair shot. Imagine all the games we could have potentially seen.
Looks like your Dreamcast is having a 20th birthday party celebration right there....The LED’s look amazing by the way, and definitely suit the Dreamcast.
I absolutely love it! I love Dreamcast and modded consoles and know that the amount of work involved in this was crazy. The cost of all these parts is not cheap as they are custom made and custom fitted so ofcourse its expensive. I see a lot of jealous comments here already and thats a shame. If anyone that has left a comment that can do as clean a job for less money (remembering that time = money) I would like to see you try. Yes the LEDs are not to everyones taste but again I respect the work and concept. MJR enjoy your new Dreamcast and to the builder and modder don't listen to all the haters, they are just jealous. The work on that DCHDMI install is top quality.

Biggest concern I have with the Moffet’s is that they remove the clear pieces of plastic inside the unit. Those are meant to direct airflow and cool the system. Removing them is a surefire way to cause overheating. The better fan will not make a difference if it’s pulling air out from the front instead of the back and bottom.
One thing I would have done was to add an opaque cover over the LEDs to make it look much smoother and not see the individual LEDs, more like a lot of RGB PC fans etc.
Have to say dude, I just love your dedication to physical media. I'm a fan too... if it's available in physical it's the only way to bus... especially for music in vinyl... looking forward to your next vinyl vid! Thanks for your vids!
Fun fact. The Dreamcast already uses a rechargeable battery. ML2430 is built to be recharged, you can't swap it with a CR2032 or anything like that. Same with the Sega CD. There's a recharge circuit, which if you try and plug in a non-rechargeable battery, it could cause problems. However, after 20 years.....
People are a bit harsh in the comments section, but this is the Internet. I get it, you went full out to see what can be done. And as long as you are happy, then that's what matters. Personally, I am not a fan of the LED madness, to me stopping at the controller ports seems like the right spot. I am also not a person that can justify the expenditure, but I do understand and appreciate the level of work done to the console. I think it's pretty impressive and the highlight to me would be the soldered in HDMI converter.
Agreed, all the Dreamcast GD-ROM drives where poorly built, and will fail over time, so even if you have a large physical collection of Dreamcast games, it makes since from a longevity standpoint to have the GDEMU if you can afford it.
Matt at Dragons Hoard Gaming is THE MAN. I sent him my crippled Dreamcast and he got it working with a quick turnaround time! Super impressed and highly recommended!! Thanks Matt!!! :)
I got a $100 GDEMU, $15 VGA cable, and $30 VGA to HDMI converter. These mods do more than I could have ever dreamed of 😂. I soldered in a new battery and it's amazing now.
When I first saw this video, I thought "$800 Dreamcast? No way. That's nuts. But after watching it, I'm super on board with it. I don't need the LED stuff, but all the other modifications are awesome.
I Just gave the 9-9-9 like to the video. Super fitting. Came out that date and is still the best console there is. Sega went out with a bang, creating a console that was too ahead of it's time. Hopefully they can become financially stable enough to someday make a sequel to the Dreamcast.
I didn't pay $800. Nowhere close to it... like I mentioned in the video. He only charged me for parts. Matt basically built this to show all the potential options people can select for themselves.
@@MetalJesusRocks I'm sorry but this isn't even believable. As far as labor, soldering isn't some dark art, it's easy to learn if you put a little practice in. Hell, 8 year olds in china can solder iphones so I'm not impressed. I guess if he bought a new Hako station with every job I could see it costing that much. I hope you just overestimated the price, because if you're telling the truth about the cost, then he's a con artist and you've been conned, and accidentally helped him fleece others.
@@boogiemanspud How would he practice? Certainly not on a live system. Also if the guy had 3D printed everything himself... might as well pay off the 3D printer, and a decent one will go for at least a thousand bucks. Also, replacing the capacitors and the fuse.
@Murican Ignorance With that attitude, shouldn't you be out helping those people instead of shitposting on a Dreamcast mode video? If you have time to waste here, so do a lot of other people. Work on yourself before throwing stones you ignorant complainer.
I've done a few things on my Dreamcast. Replaced the battery, fan replacement and lid fix, removed GD drive and installed GDEMU, and put in a little 3d printed shelf thingy that helps the air flow get back over the power supply after removing the GD drive. Now I just wish the controller was a bit better.
Quickly did the math for the parts required to put this together. Dreamcast console $80 (going by recent eBay sold listing) Cap kit ($9.95) DCHDMI ($140) Transparent Shell ($75.63) Noctua Fan 3D mount ($17.99) Noctua Fan ($27.99) Replacement battery and holder ($5.99) Sega Dreamcast PICO PSU Power Supply ($45) Controller port fuse ($3.28) Shin-Etsu grease ($17.99) Wifi Smart LED ($32.75) Custom 3d Printed “Metal Jesus” Logo ($?? unsure but maybe around $20-30) Region free BIOS ($50) Total $536.57 Assuming you're not paying for labor still shouldn't come close to $800!!
@BornIn1973 MJR did said that the guy did give him a "break" on the labor so I didn't include the cost...but I've done console modding myself and it shouldn't cost that much.
@@bolex17 The funny thing is, a few of these pieces can be gotten for even cheaper with a little bit of digging. MJR's Dreamcast is severely overpriced.
Cool. My pound cables for Dreamcast and Xbox cost me MX $200 (pesos), which comes to about US$ 11 (dollars), and they work great. Great channel. Keep up the Great (not good) work.

I really find it very strange that all these years and among all the videos of Metal Jesus channel, I can't find any video talking about "The 3DO" system. Why is he skipping it?
To be completely hones I think this is appsalutely amazing but the LEDs ruin the build for me if I had £800 to spend on a custom Dreamcast I will be opting out of the LEDs but I do like the clear case tho.
It cut to an advert right in the middle of your recreated theme song 🤣 Great video, Dreamcast was a computer that I always wanted, but never had - and this one is epic!
Really awesome bro. I wouldn't spend nearly $1000 for any console favorite or not, however to each their own. Honestly the switch is thre best price for my fave console because it does what no other console does, which is the unit itself can be portable or hooked up to a TV, but always switches the owner's mentality of home console games now available to play on the go.
You know, you're absolutely right. I've been contemplating unsubscribing for months now. Your comment actually made me take the plunge. Thanks bud. Looks ugly with the led, beside that it is a good mod.
@LaserFeesh damn I didn't mind the LED's but thats a great idea!
lit buttons would be nice
Yes really ugly
I love the attention you still pay the Dreamcast. Thanks Jason And I could hear your excitement for the LED lights and it made me like them.
"pimped out"
Boy it's 2001 all over again
Pimp My Dreamcast!
Have to say dude, I just love your dedication to physical media. I'm a fan too... if it's available in physical it's the only way to bus... especially for music in vinyl... looking forward to your next vinyl vid! Thanks for your vids!
The LED would be a better idea if it only could be seen through the controller ports with the console a nicer finish
Just me, but that thing is hideous. The Dreamcast is a classic. No need to pimp it out.
It's the best looking console of that generation and one of the best of all time IMO.
@@Charlie-eq3dj The sega Genesis was also pretty slick looking.
Grey? How boring and ordinary. Almost as bad as beige.
$800 and it doesn't even include a GDEMU. LMAO
What is that?
@@keithupton86ku you can use an SD card to storage your games and load the games you want using that thing directly from the Dreamcast.
Agreed, all the Dreamcast GD-ROM drives where poorly built, and will fail over time, so even if you have a large physical collection of Dreamcast games, it makes since from a longevity standpoint to have the GDEMU if you can afford it.
No kidding!😂
Matt at Dragons Hoard Gaming is THE MAN. I sent him my crippled Dreamcast and he got it working with a quick turnaround time! Super impressed and highly recommended!!
Thanks Matt!!! :)
I get all the future proof mods, but the LED's ?!?!?!
I got a $100 GDEMU, $15 VGA cable, and $30 VGA to HDMI converter. These mods do more than I could have ever dreamed of 😂. I soldered in a new battery and it's amazing now.
It looks really nice but I wouldn't spend that much money for it.
Nice work Matt. You've done Sega proud. :D
Thanks for the comment!
Like everyone has said; "it's amazing but $800 is OD!"
I'm totally blown away by the attention to detail. Next level.
Thanks for the comment! I do my best!
When I first saw this video, I thought "$800 Dreamcast? No way. That's nuts. But after watching it, I'm super on board with it. I don't need the LED stuff, but all the other modifications are awesome.
Looks like the ultimate Dreamcast, I wish I could afford that for all of my favorite systems
I'll just take the $800 and put towards buying a big chunk of the whole DC library.
Heck, I could be a really nice AMD based gaming PC/HTPC for that, which could emulate the Dreamcast.
You should take the $800 and save it to move out of your parents house, instead of buying comicbook toys.
I Just gave the 9-9-9 like to the video. Super fitting. Came out that date and is still the best console there is. Sega went out with a bang, creating a console that was too ahead of it's time. Hopefully they can become financially stable enough to someday make a sequel to the Dreamcast.
Woah dude it's like watching a new console!! I need the dchdmi in my life!
Good lord, that thing is insane!!
HAHAHAHA. I know, right?
Why in the world would you pay 800 for that
Patreon. He can.
@@MetalJesusRocks I think he meant 'you' in the collective sense, meaning: why would ANYONE pay 800 for that?
@@boogiemanspud How would he practice? Certainly not on a live system. Also if the guy had 3D printed everything himself... might as well pay off the 3D printer, and a decent one will go for at least a thousand bucks. Also, replacing the capacitors and the fuse.
Wow oke this is cool indeed, I love it !
The Dreamcast is cool and all, but there are WAY better things to spend $800 dollars on.
It's hard to know who to help. Most people just take advantage speaking from someone whos been on the street.
Get over 100 nes games with that money
@Murican Ignorance With that attitude, shouldn't you be out helping those people instead of shitposting on a Dreamcast mode video? If you have time to waste here, so do a lot of other people. Work on yourself before throwing stones you ignorant complainer.
@Murican Ignorance boo freaking hoo
Yeah, like a iPhone 11..........with cameras on it,lol!!!! Just kidding people 😂
Great video as usual. Very nice mods!
I don't like those Custom Leds, but only that xD
I've done a few things on my Dreamcast. Replaced the battery, fan replacement and lid fix, removed GD drive and installed GDEMU, and put in a little 3d printed shelf thingy that helps the air flow get back over the power supply after removing the GD drive. Now I just wish the controller was a bit better.
What no Cappuccino maker mod?
I have 8 dreamcast consoles, 3 of them custom, all are converted to be region free
With the lights on it look like a circus....I don’t like it.
Metal Jesus seems like such a cool guy, always has a postive energy about him
Definitely overpaid, all those mods don't add up to $800...
Quickly did the math for the parts required to put this together.
Dreamcast console $80 (going by recent eBay sold listing)
Cap kit ($9.95)
DCHDMI ($140)
Transparent Shell ($75.63)
Noctua Fan 3D mount ($17.99)
Noctua Fan ($27.99)
Replacement battery and holder ($5.99)
Sega Dreamcast PICO PSU Power Supply ($45)
Controller port fuse ($3.28)
Shin-Etsu grease ($17.99)
Wifi Smart LED ($32.75)
Custom 3d Printed “Metal Jesus” Logo ($?? unsure but maybe around $20-30)
Region free BIOS ($50)
Total $536.57
Assuming you're not paying for labor still shouldn't come close to $800!!
@@ComikBookG Yeah I was being a bit generous with some of the pricing.
@@bolex17 That's a lot of labor and if he sources his own caps from digikey and doesn't use console5 bundles, it will cost more.
Cool. My pound cables for Dreamcast and Xbox cost me MX $200 (pesos), which comes to about US$ 11 (dollars), and they work great.
Great channel. Keep up the Great (not good) work.
I gave you a custom MJ Gamecube jewel at Mogamecon...wonder if that ever got installed?
It's cool that you gave him something, but just because you gave it to him doesn't really mean he's obligated to use it. I'm sure he appreciates the gesture either way :)
@@shaftandsack He did a thorough pickups video of EVERYTHING that was bought/given at the con with Reggie. A thank you was the only thing I was asking for... don't think that was asking too much
@@show-me-retropeople like u are the bane of content creators. u give stuff wanting stuff in return
A region-free Dreamcast...AWESOME! Plus, Sega needs to make a Dreamcast 2.
This is not the video the Dreamcast deserves on its 20th Anniversary...
Then don’t watch......
@@ImAlwaysFrisky Nobody knows that till after they've watched it. It's the 20th anniversary of the DC and MJR dressed it up like a Frankenstein Christmas tree. The best looking console of that generation and one of the best of all time. Seriously?!
Charlie yeah because the thumbnail wasn’t enough to tell what was in the video........
@@ImAlwaysFrisky The fans were expecting a DC dedication video since its literally the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest gaming events in history. And we got this...
You're right. I knew it was going to be over the top when I clicked it, but I didn't expect it to be this absurd. Seriously, all these bells and whistles on a console are ridiculous. Nobody plays with LEDs on because it's a distraction from the game. The internal mods are nice but no GD rom clone which is the big thing right now and the only thing that would improve the gaming experience on the DC exponentially. This is like taking your car to Pimp My Ride. It's nice to look at for a 5 seconds but you're never going to drive it anywhere again because it's so stupid.
Charlie there is nothing wrong with what was done to the console for him. It’s his console right? I think it’s cool because it’s different and different is a plus in my book. It’s like bitching about someone liking a different pizza topping then you do. Let them enjoy what they enjoy.
This just made me want to play my dreamcast again. Old school VGA connection, CRT tv for those DC games that won't play via vga box.
Yes, I'm envious.
I really find it very strange that all these years and among all the videos of Metal Jesus channel, I can't find any video talking about "The 3DO" system. Why is he skipping it?
Wow that is one sexy piece of equipment you have there!! Nice job Matt 👍
I gotta play Soul Reaver again Dreamcast had the best version
Someone made Metal Jesus Rocks the Rolls-Royce of Sega Dreamcast Systems
its not doing anti-aliasing lol
The video doesn't have a thumbnail.... it's a solid white square.
Led lights in consoles is so og xbox circa 2003... looked stupid then and looks stupid now
Wow Metal this is sick.
your starting to show over price stuff now that many people won't buy
Really awesome bro. I wouldn't spend nearly $1000 for any console favorite or not, however to each their own. Honestly the switch is thre best price for my fave console because it does what no other console does, which is the unit itself can be portable or hooked up to a TV, but always switches the owner's mentality of home console games now available to play on the go.
Remember when mjr did simple pickups and top 10 videos? Now it’s all “is it worth $$$$$$$$$$?” Simple was better.
You know, you're absolutely right. I've been contemplating unsubscribing for months now. Your comment actually made me take the plunge. Thanks bud. Too many other good down to earth channels out there now to still be subscribed to this stuck-up idiot. Guy turned into everything he probably used to hate himself. Or maybe this is just how he always was, and having too much success and money made it more visible. Some of his 'friends' are nice though. Simple, but nice. But that's not what I subscribed for all those years ago. When you start feeling dread watching someone's videos, it's time to tap out...
Hes been watching too much "Worth It" videos on Buzzfeed.
@@ChrisGhysel yupppp I did it a few months back n jus check in once in a while n continue on
You can never go *too far* with the Dreamcast and your hot cousin from Shelbyville.
Cool, but that is just not for me. I'm going to stick with playing my stock dreamcast in s-video on my Sony Trinitron CRT.
I don't give much of a heck about Dreamcast but I just like watching metal Jesus videos 🙌 that being said, sweet Dreamcast!
Short answer: Nope.
The funny thing is that the video title is asking "did we go too far?", but as usual ppl are just complaining about the price.
Love the shirt my man. I just saw Iron Maiden in concert this August. Still the best act in Metal!
Cut out the LEDs, maybe we're talking about to a little less than $800?
OMG seeing Ferrari F355 Challenge and Unreal Tournament again after years not playing it, brings back memories.
Wow that's the ugliest thing I have ever seen... looks like a college kids dorm crammed in there
From the 70s lols.
