Just an hour ago we drunkenly argued about the UA-cam algorithm and that my feed currently consists of tech stuff, console modding and game critics. And here you are, thanks man.
You're my mod inspiration Voultar, those videos with soldering tips really helped me out to get started. While I can't even fathom to do what you do, I was able to replace my dead save batteries on my Gameboy cartridges, and more recently started modding my own GBA's with backlit screens. So thank you Voultar.
OK, let's talk about this regulator issue, because this doesn't make any sense. I keep seeing noise about how this thing gets too hot because there's no load on it. The 3-pin IC *next to* the one removed is a Rohm C4596 switching regulator, which I'm assuming is for the +5V or +3.3V rail. Granted, '90s era switching regulators often are not stable without a sufficient load on the LC filter. But we're not removing the switching reg. We're removing what seems to be a bipolar transistor. (I can't quite see the part number, but the silkscreen says "B C E" next to the legs.) That suggests this is most likely a discrete linear regulator topology. Now, linear regs are basically an auto-adjusting variable resistor forming the top half of a voltage divider from the unregulated high voltage, to the regulated voltage (and load), which is then grounded on the low side. They create heat proportional to the current passing through them, since they have to dissipate ((Vsupply - Vreg) * Iload). The current passing through is determined by what the load pulls. If there aren't any devices pulling 12V, then the only thing left is whatever the circuit's quiescent current is -- typically just whatever's in the control loop. It shouldn't create much heat at all. That SMD resistor is probably a bleeder for the output cap, and a little something to soak up some transient noise. It won't be consuming much current because it doesn't have the ability to shed much heat. So, is there really anything to this theory that the 12V reg is responsible for excess heat? Because until this video, the only ones claiming it's an issue are ... well, forum and Reddit posts that don't inspire confidence that the poster has any knowledge of the subject matter. It all sounds like cargo cult wisdom to me. This suspicion is further bolstered by the fact that the GD-ROM can and does shut down when not in use, so even a stock Dreamcast will have negligible load on the 12V rail sometimes. I know Voultar wouldn't fall for hearsay, so... what gives? Somebody educate me. Totally prepared to be wrong, I just want a good reason to go hacking up the supply and risk losing LAN adapter support for the... I dunno, maybe one time in my life I might actually use it.
Apart from the sweet, sensual soldering and ASMR tones, that was a wonderful journey through some fantastic Dreamcast game sound tracks. MSR, Headhunter, Shenmue... so gooooood.
Got two Dreamcasts, an SNES, and a Genesis that all need repair. Not trying to flip them, they're all my loves. Three Christmas gifts and one pawn shop score (the 2nd DC).
I tell ya, it's your videos that made me finally buy a soldering iron, some IPA, and all my other tools and give console modding a go. Thanks to you, the DCDIGITAL was the second mod I ever attempted, and I've never used the Peter North Special Sauce.
Oh my Holy Lord, Voultar is back. Man, I always look at your videos and my knowledge 'bout soldering grows a lot. Thanks for comming back and show us this amazing skills.
Poor Nick. That slight look of uncertainty when he says prototype, knowing it would come back to haunt them. Still have to be thankful, the Gerber HD rectalvision shared for Genesis PCBs are awesome, if you get them from the right board house.
It's a Christmas miracle! In June too! Seeing all that bad kind of nasty on the power supply makes me want to clean up and re cap my Dreamcast. I had the urge to just incinerate that shell when I saw the inside of it. lol
I'm surprised you don't have some of the Kester 951 liquid flux in there, I found a couple bottles with real thin rod (giggity) applicators and it worked like a dream compared to my MG Chemicals flux pen. Fixed up my Xbox 128MB memory mod with that stuff.
@@MrSadface He did a video on it, IIRC it's the Hakko 808 vacuum-based desoldering iron. Expensive though. I paid $15 for a pump-based desoldering iron that's grounded, works just as well.
I'm glad to see another video! Your live streams are at 4AM my time, so i haven't been able to join in on the fun haha. Have you thought about sharing those to UA-cam as well?
Hey Voultar. You probably don't check these anymore, but I wanted to thank you for that mod to the internal battery. I will try it out soon because my DC battery is D E A D. Thank you!!
I love the mix of rock and Japanese video game soundtrack selections for the video. Sick video, I'll have to return to this when I am ready to service and mod my Dreamcast.
I've got my two Dreamcasts one from lanch and Another from acquired Years later and they're dead at this point. I just wanted to smash them to pieces from disappointment and frustration you gave me hope after all I love modding and tinkering but couldn't find parts Thank you Voultar!
Lord Voultar, I'm glad you are back. I really enjoy your modding videos. I'm getting ready to start my first project and using the same soldering station you use based on your review. Can't wait for more vids.
Love the Dreamcast mod! Also, that KSGER solder station is the bomb! I bought one last year off of an earlier Voultar link on Bangood and it's been rock solid every day. And so fast to heat up. Takes around 15 seconds max from cold to ready to rock and roll. Cheap tips work great too.
How can voultar be so popular.......yet........so small in the community..... This........this just doesn't make sense people!!! SUBSCRIBE!!! HE SHOULD BE A MILLIONAIRE!!
I saw Bob (RetroRGB) at the beginning of this video, and got excited and ready to hunker down for another great educated viewing. But, oh ya, Voultar... yeah.
Great to see ya back, Voultar. Can't wait to see more of your mod work soon! Binging your videos is what inspired me to really start working on my soldering skills and while I still have a lot to learn I feel like I've improved dramatically since finding your channel. Keep up the great work!
Great video. You saved me from buying a Pico PSU that I don't need to do my GDEMU install. I had seen rumblings that they weren't the best idea, and eventually came across your thoughts on them, so I checked out your UA-cam to see if there was a video on how to mod the original psu. Shout out to Console5, I've been using them to recap all my old Ataris so they'll continue to get my business for Dreamcast as well.
I know I'm late to this, but thanks for making this. My Dreamcast power supply is recapped and the battery mod worked great! Now I just need to tackle the DCHDMI part.
Dreamcast is the one system I can actually handle. It has a nice modular design and even rivaled pc gaming technology at the time with its efficient PowerVR architecture.
Voultars back BABY! Words can't express the significance of this achievement. The world now has a platinum trophy for surviving the time without our lord Voultar. But he's back now...so don't fret or fear .voutar is freaking here babbbby
Absolutely amazing content, and great solder work! It's something I sure as hell couldn't do yet, but as a visual learner I could pick it up quickly. Thanks for the amazing content as always!
Voultar never really left, Bob just took him hostage and he escaped.
Sounds like a plotline from a summer run of The Young & The Restless. Coolio.
Best opening ever! All the bad modders are crapping themselves
Yeah like douche in dance
Lolazer!
..is that still a thing?
anyone?
oh god
More like the worst.
The closing is actually quite hilarious in its own right about HD retrovision!
I was having a good day before this was posted. Now I'm having a GREAT day.
Voultar is back, so strap on and let's do this
Strap in or strap on?
@@TheDemocrab I always heard and use strap on
Sit back, strap on, and let's do it, to the Sega Dreamcast... let's do it!

I was just thinking this morning, where is Lord Voultar?!
My wife: "Who keeps 'Ooooooo'-ing in a strangely provocative manner?"
Me: "You just wouldn't understand, dear."
same here x))) sorry voultar but wifey said you are a weirdo :DDD
Wife comes in and says what the hell am I watching :D
69 thumbs up and I don't wanna make it 70
i dont anderstand i wish he stop doing that
It gives me a hard on every time😂
I have 20ish years of soldering experience and I just wanna say really nice work on that diode bodge!

I still have my dreamcast plugged in my room back in Italy.... only play it when I go back once a year as a treat...
all this talk of coming back is making me crave a mcrib
and some new flux too
Keeping the system cooler will help stop the caps drying out 🙂
You don't know how much you have missed a Voultar untill Voultar pops back into your inbox.
When I saw your notification pop up, I'm not gonna lie, I felt a tingle in my pants.

That Skies of Arcadia track.... man... memories.
That transparent case looks awesome. I still have two Dreamcast consoles, white and Sega sports black one. Both have boxes and all their stuff.

Finally my favourite asmr soldering yt'er is back, yess

Oooh, nice battery mod - I really like that. REALLY like that.
I was sincerely worried that you left youtube, glad to see thaat that's not the case.

Heard his name all over the place. First time watching him. This was a very entertaining, and helpful video. Cant wait to see whats next
31:37 😍 excellent music choice. unreal tournament was awesome.
This week was average, now it's awesome. Welcome back.
WhereTF have you been! Damn bro! You have been VERY much missed my friend!

That Dreamcast is almost as dirty and your 'lonely time' pet sock that lives under your bed! Welcome back, you were missed!
Where are all the Christmas tree LED light strips on the inside?
I like that CR2032 battery mod. First I have seen a modification in order to use normal non-rechargeable CR2032 coin cells. Thanks for sharing this.
Watching your video makes me feel confident in trying to do this mod myself now, just got to wait for the parts to restock.
It's a Christmas miracle! In June too!
Seeing all that bad kind of nasty on the power supply makes me want to clean up and re cap my Dreamcast.
I had the urge to just incinerate that shell when I saw the inside of it. lol
Welcome back. You are the reason I am getting into retro console repairs.
Welcome back, dawg. YT wasn't the same without you, missed that sweet, sweet soldering.
Now I can furiously catch froggie in glorious HDMI. Welcome back LV!
Voultar is back! In POG form! Now I need to mod a Dreamcast....
Absolutely happy for this. Thank you as well for the ps1 projects. It really helped me so much. I still have my og fat girl from February of 95.
Quality speaks for itself, you can't keep a good dog down.
This is my fav system of all time. I have most of these mods planned out for my own dc already. Nice to see the whole thing done top to bottom.
I was consoling myself watching My Mechanics restore 100 year old coffee grinders ridiculously well, but feels good to strap on again. LOL
CHECK THE VIDEO DESCRIPTION! Links to the DC Case, DCHDMI, batteries, my soldering equipment, etc. will be found there!

Good to have you back Voultar.
Voultar is back... And what a triumphant return it is too!
