Best episode. Can’t believe Sam and Henry were only on one episode. Yet they handled it really well.
They were in the previous episode 2 for like 5 seconds l lol
yeah i was worried about that and they did a masterpiece in just one episode, the pace is so great.
@@Bubba_1776 Bruh didn’t notice them
I’d say it’s appropriate. In the game you can pick up these notes that kinda tell a mini story about someone who died or something. Henry and Sam’s story always felt like one of those stories but Joel just happened to be there as well. It’s like Bill and Frank. A story about people. The Last Of Us.
@@Bubba_1776 Oh well, that's different then.
I like that Kathleen got killed by a mushroom child, after what she said about kids dying all the time. Divine Justice
100%!
She'll rise up later and become a sprinting karen.
@@mannylugz5872 lmao
@@mannylugz5872 Man, these Karens be following you to the end of the world, Goddamn.
@@mannylugz5872 The Last of Karen
There's something unsettling in realizing that Sam was just sitting there because he's deaf. An infected listens for their prey. Even if he ever went to go full on clicker he couldn't. Ellie broke her promise and fell asleep, so he was just sitting there. Waiting, screaming from the inside. As his brain was slowly eaten away. And until someone touched him, or came in his view, he would sit there forever.
And when Ellie touched him, Sam saw his own body attack her. Instead of becoming the superhero he always wanted to be. He became a monster, crying for his brother to help. He didn't even hear the shot. Just his vision slowly fading to black. He spent all night trying not to fall asleep. Then suddenly his eyes were slowly closing, afraid of what would happen once he woke up, but he never did.
Bill and Frank's story was sad, in a stoic kind of way, but just like Bill said at the end, it wasn't tragic. They'd lived a full life. Here Sam and Henry had hope, a chance, and a whole life ahead of them. Henry was so good that he protected Ellie before even realizing what he was doing. It was instinctual. That comes from deep inside.
But a little like Kathleen said, this kind of goodness, makes it hard to live in such a tragic world.
Yeah you just made this episode 2x more emotional, well said
bro chill
being kind and generous doesn't get you far in that world. joel isn't such an innocent protagonist as people might perceive him to be
And its ironic that Kathleen's cruelty is what killed her and her people.
Damn, How wonderfully said
Ellie's cry-sigh when Henry shot himself is just heartbreaking.
Am I the only one who got Battle of The Bastards vibes from that swarm scene?
Also we all know Bella is incredible as Ellie but that reaction to Henry ending things was elite acting level. What a career does this girl have in front of her!!
When the clickers behind Ellie got run down by the car, immediately made me think of Jon on foot when the cavalry charges meet.
@@ABCD24242424 exactly!!
Right? Her acting in this scene was on par with Kaitlyn Dever and Elisabeth Moss but she shot this at 17?
Haha more like Hardhome
@@AL-fl4jk Hahaha well just because of the infected both episodes have in common. But I mean from a cinematography standpoint..it’s much more like BOTB
Sam & Henry absolutely broke all of my grown ass into a crumb
This episode was so economical in its storytelling. It had one episode to get us connected to Henry and Sam then kill them, and it pulled it off beautifully. Lamar Johnson and Keivon Woodward had such an instant, magnetic relationship that got you immediately attached to them.
It was such a smart choice to have Ellie try to save Sam with her blood. That is very impactful for her internal struggle moving forward. And it paid off just how much Sam and Ellie had bonded. That line where Joel said that it’s easier for kids as they don’t have anyone that depends on them only for Ellie to lose Sam who depended on her. Such a great way of handling character with such small character work. The entire mirroring of Henry and Sam to Joel and Ellie serves to continue the narrative drive to the ending in such a deft way. Another banger episode.
Also the Savage Starlight, Joel working his way through the street to get to the sniper, and the Bloater kill being just like the game was chef’s kiss. The Infected were truly terrifying in this episode. The clicker kid was so creepy.
This is what happens when you get a decade AFTER the original story to think about improvements.
"That line where Joel said that it’s easier for kids as they don’t have anyone that depends on them only for Ellie to lose Sam who depended on her." I would even say that Ellie feels like that every human on the planet depends on her. Having played the games you know how much Ellie struggles with her immunity and how it seems to not having a meaning at all. It's amazingly heartbreaking!
I think it makes me appreciate just how strong and universal the first game's story truly is, and how much of it took a community to make that into the gem it turned out to be (Neil Druckmann may have wrote the story, but Bruce Straley and Naughty Dog's writers' group really helped shape the game from beginning to end of development in not just gameplay but narratively too). Which makes me excited to see what Craig Mazin can improve upon and change for TLOU2 (as many of the narrative/character writing and directional problems are on Druckmann solely).
@@theprowler18
I also think the show can iron out more of the structural/execution problems of The Last of Hs Part II. There is so much that works about that game, but there are some cracks in the armor that I think can be heavily improved for the show. Especially since they know the story and have the ability to learn from what worked and what didn’t.
Bruh are you going around different reactors’ videos and doing a copypasta? 😂
I loved the moment when Ellie thinks she can heal him; it's very sad because we (the audience) knew it wouldn't work, but it's also a reminder that despite what she's been through, she still has a childlike view of the world (maybe she also regrets not being able to save Tess in some way, or at least not trying to save her). Why is she different if she can't save the people she loves? Is she doomed to survive alone and see everyone she loves turn into monsters (cf. the fear she expressed)?
There is also a double dialogue about Henry being a bad man because he did bad things but it was OK because he was doing it for Sam - once Sam is gone, in is own mind he's just a bad man.
I like to think she knew there was a great chance it wouldn’t work but felt she had to at least try. She was mostly trying to make him feel better and less scared.
@@DatBoyPacker65 Just my opinion but I don't think you would fall asleep if you did not believe it worked.
I dont wanna spoil anything, but I don't think the feeling developed coz she failed to save tess. It might be also a part, but there is a major reason in her past why she was desperate to try whatever to save this new kid friend she just made.
There is also the irony of Kathleen being so focused on chasing after Henry who was ultimately no real threat and actually ignoring the real threat with the infected. We saw last episode when Perry showed here the slight rumbling underground. She knew the danger but decided her revenge was more important than protecting her people, and now her people will suffer for that. If she had dealt with the threat first, it’s entirely possible that she and her people might have had a chance. Everyone might have had a chance, including Sam. Kathleen’s revenge inevitably doomed everyone.
If she had followed her brothers advice about FORGIVING everyone in Kansas City would still be alive but nope you’re right she doomed everyone lol
Yep, well said. Great little sub-plot. My favorite thing about post-apocalyptic fiction is its effectiveness in telling these types of "human folly" stories.
Yeah, Kansas City is now gone. I mean some might be able to find refuge somewhere but not long with that many infected around and most if not all the fighters gone
She's a real karen. Even with all her allies getting butchered including her right hand man, she still chose to hunt Henry instead of running.
"Anger clouds your judgement" kinda thing
Yo the bloater was terrifying but seeing a horde of clickers still pouring out that hole was insane.
Yeah, no more resistance people left in the city after that...
@@matias. capital clicker city now
And the thought that all those We The People rebels celebrating their victory will all become zombies when they got overrun.
@@mannylugz5872 they need to be called the Kansas city clickers now hahaha
Me: how much infected do you want?
Hbo: yes
I’ve played the game, knew it was coming, but this is no mistake. For me, this episode hit harder than the game, it’s as if I’m witnessing the story for the first time.
The fact that we had a massacre this episode with a massive infected swarm and that (awesome looking) Bloater, but that *still* wasn't the most brutal thing to happen this episode... 💔
Ellie's cry when she watches Henry... gets me every time 😭
This show keeps doing what I genuinely thought was impossible. They’re taking entire chapters of the game and somehow condensing them into hour long episodes and they DON’T FEEL RUSHED! We got the backstory of Henry and Sam, and Sam being deaf was an idea Craig Mazin had that Neil Druckman loved so much that he said that it made him angry (in a good way) he didn’t originally put it in the game. We also saw the tunnel community which is one of my favorite levels in gaming history because it tells an entire story just from looking at your surroundings, plus it was great to see Ellie and Sam just be kids and forget the troubles of the world. And finally we got to see not just a horde of infected but our first *BLOATER* and it was even mor terrifying than the game.
This episode was absolutely a 10/10
It also gives greater context with the Infected horde attack for Sam to get infected and allow a different but similar tragic impact to hit with Sam and Henry's fate overall. This gives me some genuine excitement to see how he can change and improve TLOU2's narrative overall.
The fact that they can vary episode length based on how much they want to cover has elevated TV so much
i was hoping beyond belief there was some way Ellie's blood could be the magical medicinal solution we needed. begging the show like 'please be how it works i know it isn't but please be how it works please for the love of god'
Of course it wasn't and now I am inconsolable.
The show gave me a bit of hope that Ellie could actually heal bites in this version, and then it ripped that hope away immediately
The lesson to take back from the show is, "Don't get attached to any of the characters."
If it worked like that, it kinda negates the ending of the game and would have changed everything going forward.
@@futurekingjay not really. It would be exactly the same
@@rockycuro7737 Spoilers for people who haven't played the game. If her blood can heal bites, she doesn't need to die for them to make a cure. Hence, the fireflies won't decide to perform fatal surgery on her. Joel wouldn't need to kill them to save her. Joel wouldn't lie to her. Ellie wouldn't resent Joel. Why kill her when you can keep her alive and steadily draw blood from her to cure people. She'd be an infinite supply. Also, why didn't she bring that idea up with Tess? There was plenty of time for Ellie to cut in on the conversation and go "Wait, maybe I can heal Tess with my blood". But if you mean her blood only heals bites before people turn, I still don't see them reaching the fireflies only for them to still want to make a cure. A cure for who? The people who have already turned? They're too far gone. Cordyceps starts replacing their organs and shit. You cross that line, I'm pretty sure it's straight up a point of no return.
There just something about Ellie having hope and thinking her blood would heal Sam and it not working out, just broke me. It’s like her hope was gone…
The cure is not in her blood. Its probably inside her brain because the fungus creeps to the victim's brain to control them.
Love y’all’s channel guys, keep up the good work. Having Sam deaf and younger was a perfect way of making it more emotional. The kid that played Sam gets an A+.
Also to see Ellie as a protective big sister. Great choices on Sam.
Y'ALL, Y'ALL, Y'ALL
Kathleen had the vibes of a strict soccer mom than a leader of the resistant. IMO it's good because who would have guess that this kind of person would be the one who led the entire army. She gave the 'never meant to be' kind of villain.
She went from a Kathleen to a Karen
@Christopher P. Braxton In a way, yes, since the reason her followers are so loyal to her is because she's the sister of their previous leader, who from Henry's description sounds like they damn near worshipped.
I really like her character, not just because Melanie Lynskey is a plus in everything she's in, but because she's an example of how the unlikeliest person can be shaped by tragedy and outside events to become a monster.
@Christopher P. Braxton Another reason Lynskey was so effective; she's got this naturally warm and pleasant "suburban mom" air about her and then you see her order a mass killing the same way you'd expect her to conduct a PTA meeting. It's not that dissimilar to her "Yellowjackets" character.
She made a good enforcer. But she was such a bad leader motivated by her hatred towards everybody connected with FEDRA and bloodlust towards Henry. So much she choose to ignore the great danger starting to manifest in the city and even when the zombies butchered all her soldiers, she still decided to go after Henry instead of running.
@@mannylugz5872 yeah, if she would’ve listened to her brother that she’s doing everything to get revenge in and forgive and let it go, then she and her people would still be alive
At one point Joel says its easier for the kids because they don't have anyone else relying on them, but here we see Ellie taking on the caregiver role for Sam and failing. In a way she carries the weight of all of humanity relying on her.
7:00 Every single reactor I have seen they think it’s because she is exited, why would she be exited? I took it as that Joel told her to put the gun in her backpack and she didn’t listen so when she saw Joel reaction to her having it on her jacket she smiled because she got caught.
@Carlie McCoy Yes! I edited my comment and added your part of “getting caught” because that’s exactly what it was. I don’t know why so many people think she got exited…it doesn’t make sense.
Yeah I don’t know how pretty miss that… considering how everyone gets mad at Ellie for not listening and putting it in her pocket, that was clearly a smile or ‘yeah oops I did it anyway’ you can even tell by Joel’s face when he saw that is that he’s annoyed but not surprised
Everyone (including myself) assumed the sniper was trying to kill Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam and was just a terrible shot. But he was really just trying to keep them in the area until Kathleen and the others got there.
It’s been a while since an episode of tv made me cry…
You keep saying that each week
@vikramprasanna8908 maybe his a bot
By hbo 🤣
@@vikramprasanna8908maybe he thinks 1 week is “a while” :)
I didn't even shed a tear, It just didn't hit me hard enough
There are so many sublte acting pieces in this show that are so easy to miss. In the scene where Joel tells Ellie to get out her gun, everyone notices her excited look but most skip over Joels very simple "really?" stare when she pulls the gun from her coat instead of her backpack where he told her to put it.
Such a great acted show. This episode is my favorite so far.
Sam wasn't deaf in the game, and he was like 4 years older. It was more of a Boy crush on Girl relationship where here it was more of a Big sister. It was so much more impactful in the show, even knowing what was coming. They did such a good job.
I noticed the stare Joel gave her for where the gun was. Lol I thought he was actually going to say something about it
Joel didn't hear them because he's sleep-deprived, exhausted from all the stairs, and slept on the side his bad ear. Henry lucked out sneaking on them
Bill and Franks episode was sad but beautiful and I didn’t cry for that. But this one got to me. Henry’s sudden guilt as to what he just did to his little brother was just so sudden and so horrible. This episode was very well done 😢
I think this did it better than the game. Joel and Henry waking up to that going from 0 -100 instantly.
Henry still in shock when he pulled the trigger and what a choice focusing on Ellie's face in that scene.
Incredible performance from Bella
It's not just killing his brother, it's also the realization that all he did to save him, including causing the death of Kathleen's brother who he considered a great man, was for nothing. Everything came crashing down on him at once and at that point, he saw death as the only solution.
@@mst3KGf you’re right. Henry was not ready to take a life himself.. especially not his little brother, who he tried to protect the best he could :’(
@@lovecrime13 and what is there to live for after that, when what kept you going was your little supersam
This series....wow, every episode is intense and emotional, bravo!
The money shots in this episode were phenomenal, the performances next level
I think the casting of Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen is to have a very different villain then the one we will be seeing at some point.
Kathleen is the Karen that has finally able to talk the manager
She served her purpose in being a foundation for the thematic conflict of Part 2 (being covered in season 2/3).
This episode also gave an explanation for why someone as outwardly unlikely as her is the leader of the revolution; it was originally her brother who was in charge and he sounds like the kind of person who's followers damn near worshipped him, so when he was killed, they transferred that loyalty to his sister.
@@mst3KGf To paraphrase a villain in another well done show: "Power does not come to whoever is stronger, faster, or smarter. True power comes to those willing to do ANYTHING to achieve it." Jerry pointed out that everyone loved and respected Kathleen's brother, but it was her (ruthlessness) that finally got things done. It ultimately ended up being her failing, but it goes a long way to explain why others got behind her.
Wonder how they'll portray David later on, if he's very similar to the game or not
even though the character of 'Kathleen' isn't suppose to be likable, i think they did a great job with that character and making her 3 dimensional - she's morally flawed and ruthless. i'm glad you pointed out that she wasn't ever meant to be the leader - rather that responsibility was thrusted upon her. also, she has the loyalty of Jeffrey Pierce's character who's a loyal soldier and the people follow kathleen because they see that this alpha soldier follows her. this is just a great show, excellent writing and acting
Exactly, it seems like everyone respected her brother a lot ans he was adored and he was the past leader. Her brothers death really made her step into that role and her anger and thirst for revenge was the thing that powered them to actually take down Fedra, so her leadership actually got them somewhere. I think people don’t realise that it’s not the voice, or looks or even just the strength that makes you a leader. In this situation it’s the willingness to do everything and anything to get there and you can tell that she wouldn’t have been like this before the outbreak but she’s completely gone with grief and anger now
15:40. Not even 2 weeks ago, Kathleen's Militia killed all of FEDRA in Kansas City for the freedom of the people. But, her quest for revenge against Henry for getting her brother killed resulted in her, Perry, & most of her militia getting killed by this Horde of Infected. So, now there is hardly anyone left to defend the city as the Horde makes its way towards it. This reminds me of how in Part 2 of the games a person's quest for revenge for someone they love can result in losing everything.
Achara: How many?
Infected:yes
Part of the reason why episode 3 was so great is that by changing the story so much they were able to give such an emotional impactful scene to not only the new viewers, but also the gamers. This episode was amazing to those of us that didn't play the game. And they change it up enough that this is still a heartbreaking moment for the gamers. But it does highlight how those that complained about episode 3 isn't something I agree with. It gives more reasons for the gamers to watch than to just see the game come to life. Because episode 3 came out of nowhere, whereas this twist I saw coming. Episode 3 gave me some hope that her blood would've worked even thought I know it just can't.
What gave you hope in episode three that her blood could work?
Achara made me laugh when she said "check for bites" when Ellie saved Sam and Henry from under the car. No time to stop and check for bites at that moment girl! Love the channel, keep it up, you guys are awesome!
Respect for both of yall crying. Such a powerful episode. Keep it up yall. Awesome awesome awesome reaction .
All I wanna say is ,it does not make it any easier knowing what's coming ,and on we go looking forward ,many more heart breaks to come.
winter season soon 👀
This might be one of my top 10 episodes in television history 🏆
It really is that good.
Nah
I imagine a world where Sam is a famous comic book artist who is excited about James gunn taking over the DCEU ❤️
Henry and Sam were cast so well. They really held this episode up. Sam having a disability was an interesting twist. The Kathleen addition was choppy at best. They tried to give her purpose by telling the audience not showing, which I didn't like at all. Her fate and that of her crew was perfect. It's what revenge filled leaders and their dumb henchman deserved.
Henry’s first kill is sam, just wow
That ending scene was like a gunshot to the heart.
Great timing! I was just checking one last time for an excuse to procrastinate sleeping
“Tissues are to the left”. I felt so seen. Achara Sam melted my heart instantly
The best episode so far. Phenomenal. Loved every minute.
13:15 "Oh, how many?"
All of it. The answer is all of the many.
Just when I finally managed to settle down my overwhelming emotions of this episode, watching both of you pour heartbreaking tears got me to cry all over again...😭
Given Keivonn & fellow Torontonian (Canadian) Lamar's limited appearance on TLOU, I was so impressed with their outstanding performance! And from the outcome of their praise-worthy performances, I hope to see them in other future projects, hopefully soon! 👏👍👍👏
Awesome reaction guys!
If you are interested in the name of the big guy, and the other names for the different stages of the Infected (based on the game), read on:
Stage: (All true to their namesake)
1 - Runners: Most we've seen up to this episode. Little outward signs of infection, relatively dumb.
2 - Stalkers: Haven't seen so far. A little smarter, they hide and pop out when a victim is near.
3 - Clickers: Encountered in the museum in episode two and this episode quite a lot. Completely blind but use echolocation and have VERY sensitive hearing. Extra vicious.
4 - BLOATERS: The "big guy" we encountered in this episode. Heavy armor from fungal plating and incredibly strong. The ones Joel was referring to in episode two when he said some Infected have been around as long as twenty years.
If anyone watched the Strain they'll remember the Feelers who are reminiscent of the Kid Seekers in their acrobatics.
The way this was shot reminds me of how Black Summer was shot. Like different characters' perspectives would be shown for the same timeline and they would converge at some point.
Insane episode!!! Can't wait to see what they do with David the cannibal
I've never played the games, so this is just a guess, but logically speaking, Ellie's blood isn't the cure. If it was, the scanners wouldn't show red, indicating the presence of the fungus. That means that the Cordyceps is in her blood but, for some reason, it's not taking root or however you want to put it. If anything, her blood might actually infect someone. She's a carrier.
Cordyceps take root in the brain. In the game they didn't really show if her blood can infect someone. They only said it spreads through a bite.
Jaby trying hard to give a face for the thumbnail when the dead get introduced 😂🥂 #goated acting
This setup looks so good
I love how all the infected of Runners ... Stalkers ... Clickers cme out n an awesome entry of Bloaters from underground... Jst waiting for Joel and ellie to encounter in the series to kill Bloaters ...
26:15 because it wasn't Joel's bullets, the old guy probably had a big stock of ammo
In Sam's Super Sam drawings, he's fighting FEDRA guys. Shows you how much of a "collaborator" Henry was.
Every episode has been great but this is one is my favorite. The characters and performances made it shine
How you didn't see that child clicker ? "New gymnast clicker"😂
Great reaction and review guys. Yeah, when I get to Henry and Sam I skip that cinematic on replay. Just so gutting.
my fav scene is the moment joel shaking telling us all

18:18 The Gasp 👍👌
I agree, it felt worse knowing because they added hope to the scene with Ellie and Sam. Hope that her blood was somehow the cure but gamers know that's not how it works. It really broke me and Henry and Sam's actors performances were great.
Funny that Neil said they made that scene to answer people who wonder a out it when the game released
Favorite episode so far for me.
Great call Achara! I’m pretty sure that was a gymnast
the music when ellie and joel walking away at the end of the episode it kinda reminds me of world war Z
Henry in the last scene, if only eyes could talk 🥺
It was necessary to wait for episode 5 to find the tension of THE LAST OF US the Clicks which come out of the ground the Colossus an explosive finale.
The best episode. I reccomend to play intro music immediately episode ends. Instant goosebumps for gamers
With the game, you have the illusion of control, but here with a tv show, you have no control at all, plus you can just relax and pay attention to every detail, so it hits different.
14:16 Those big guys, in case you’re wondering, they’re called bloaters. They’ve been infected for over a decade.
Welpp...there goes "No Infected" in Kansas city.. Henry and Sam was great this episode..
Yes i know what is gonna happen and how it will end also for the second season but i dont care its still amazing this series.
I enjoyed this episode, I think the naivety of a child thinking that rubbing her blood on his wound would heal him covers one of the issues I had with the game with Sam not telling anyone. At least here they have hope as the reason. Part of the issue I had with episode 3 is now everyone that we have meet besides the main characters has basically only lasted 1 episode. At least in the game Bill lived past his encounter with them.
15:21 this scene right here just reminds me of the battle of the bastards in game of thrones
"tissues are to the left! OMG LOL
I can confirm it’s worse knowing what’s coming.
Achara: “Why would you keep rats alive”
😦 *Jesus Christ*
Man when this game came out it was like movie and game in one now . Now I can see the third dimension that game almost showed when playing and finishing.
This definitely my favorite episode
for this ep I think the game version gave me more impact with how deep was the conversation between Sam and Ellie, and how shocked when Sam turning in the morning without anybody knew. The expression and regret from Henry was much more terrifiying in the game after killed sam.."That my fucking brother!" broke my heart in the game..
I never played the games but this series is going great so far. Im on the edge of my seat every episode and im enthralled by the dialogue. I heard some complaints about how they changed the Bill storyline from the game. Im curious how the game fans feel about this episode. Because it blew me away and broke my heart at the same time. Just WOW
Making Sam deaf made it more sad. 💔
They must have left Anthony up there in that space with a garbage can full of bullets! Lol
True to the game, Joel has infinite bullets at the sniper scene.
That old guy had infinite bullet as well
Jaby really said “tissues are to the left”
The famous words of achara, check for bites
I said it in “All Of Us Are Dead” and I’m going to continue to say it in every single show like this - check for bites!! 😂

@@Achara 🙏🏾
"oh how many...?" all of them.
Damn it was heartbreaking…even after knowing Wat was gonna happen…I’m already shaking about the thought of Wat if the series replicates the same story of the 2nd game…I went in to a trauma when it happened that I couldn’t touch the joystick for a week and the 2nd game is an emotional ride and it took a huge toll on me after completing it
I hate when people just run straight instead of, u know... just going to the side...
If every episode keeps punching me in the heart like this, i'd be dead in the last season
"check for bites!" lol what.
Man the Bloater was sick should have gotten more screen time 🤣🤣
I think it would be cool, especially for Achara (maybe after the show ends) reacting to the game cut scenes so you can see the game vs show. In all honesty I feel the game did Henry shooting Sam and his reaction better but... I feel the show making Sam deaf and the interaction with Ellie was done better. Both show and game have their merits.
Joel keeps finding rifles that jam on him!
Keep your firearms CLEAN, guys!
Putting it on Sam's face to give him joy in the dark times
Even though I already know but again tears 😭😭😭
I love this woman! She’s sharp and classy. Thanks for the reaction guys!
Shout out to Skye, the little girl that played the child clicker! 👏👏👏👏
