  • Welcome! Watch as we use a Bafang programing cable to tune the settings on Alvin's BBSHD! Do you think it's worth it? Let us know in the comments!
    ⚡DISCLAIMER⚡: For the "Low Battery Protection" voltage setting, we set our 52V battery to 39V protection. It is recommended to have it set at 42.5V - 43V on a 52V battery. Like anything in the modifying world, please 🙏 do your research!

    Now that I have done a ton of homework on batteries. The lowest recommendation on the jumbo shark per cell (min. discharge) is 2.75V. From what I found online these batteries are run down to the min. number between 500 and a 1000 times. I am figuring that is if every battery cell is performing optimumly. The jumbo shark is a 14s by 5p set up. We can multiply the min. 2.75 x 14 which gives us 38.5v as the minimum voltage. Now I can be wrong and plan to do some more research. I found most people like the min volts at 3.03 volts on lower quality batteries to be on the safe side. I kinda want to run it at the minimum 39v and see if I run into any issues. Thanks for the feedback. I would have never jumped down the rabbit hole if you guys didn't say anything. I will keep you guys in the loop on this. If anyone is reading this keep your cutoff voltage between 42 and 43 on a 52v battery. I am by no means a battery expert. Love the comments. Thanks again.

      I think it's more about what the cutoff by the BMS is, which is independent from what the controller does. I once ran my 52 volt battery down to 47 volts and the BMS cut it off.
      I now have a new custom built battery using the Tesla 21800 cells, it has 20 amp hours and puts out about 36 amps. My friend who built the battery told me that it is wise to have "head room". My controller probably only allows 28 amps max for my BBSHD.
      Unfortunately my frame is such that I cant fit a bigger battery in my triangle, and I don't want to sport a battery on my rear rack, I use the rear rack for beverages and ice only, I don't sport a back back. If I could fit a 60 or 72 volt battery, I would get a Ludi controller. My friend has one to sell me, but he said I really need a bigger battery for the Ludi, otherwise I might blow out the BMS or the battery pack, a Ludi controller can handle 50 up to 60 amps @ 72 volts, about 4,320 watts, more power than I need.

    Low voltage cut off for a 52 V battery shouldn’t be any lower than 43 V. At that point the battery cells are considered 0% charged and you are now into damage territory for the cells. The amount of extra time you’ll get out of them is very small, the amount of damage you can do to the batteries is very large.
    The two worst things you can do to lithium ion batteries is over discharging them, and leaving them at a high state of charge for a long time.

    • @FirstTimersCycling
      @FirstTimersCycling  2 роки тому

      We ran with it a couple times. Didn't see a noticeable difference so we moved it back to 43v. Thanks for the feedback though!

    • @sal98
      @sal98 2 роки тому +3

      Yes lithium cells should not really go down pass 3 to 3.1 volts per cell. Which would be 3volts x 14cells for a 52 volt pack =42 to 43 volts.

      Yup if you want your battery to last a normal life span. Yes you get a extra battery life with lower voltage cutoff but end up shoretning the life span of battery so its a bad rookie move for sure.

    If I wanted an extra 5kms range from my 36v battery and the Low Battery Protection is set to 41v, could I safely lower that to 40v?

      When we changed our "Low Battery Protection" we ended up moving it back to the recommended voltage. We don't advise messing with that setting. Too many articles and reviews stating you may hurt your battery by lowering the Low Battery Protection.

    Thank you for this very informative video. I have a Bafang 250w m400 motor. When I pedal I have a feeling that the engine only helps up to a certain point. Than I have to switch into a higher gear ( cassette gear ) and then it helps again. Do you know if there is a setting where I can prolong this help limit? I don't have a throttle, only pedal assist.

    • @FirstTimersCycling
      @FirstTimersCycling  10 місяців тому +2

      Hello and thank you for your question! What you feel is how we feel with the BBSHD 1000w Bafang setup. From PA1-PA9 after a certain mph/kph pedal assist will stop until you switch to the next gear. What we think is the motor may be load sensing or rpm sensing so it can detect when to shut off assist to conserve power. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a setting we can change. Might have to direct this question to Bafang tuners out there. I only know of one called Golden Motor where we use their Bafang tunes to up the power delivery on the motor. I hope this helps!

      Can't say for sure but it wouldn't do any harm to try to connect and make a simple change like PA1 assist to level 20% instead of 10% or wherever it's at. If you receive any errors when trying to connect, then you'll know it won't work.
