    Back in the late 70's while in the Navy I started looking into Dobermans and the first kennel I found was Kimbertal in PA, they had some impressive large Dobe's. We finally got our first in 1990, through a breeder in NC, Scudamore Kennels. Rachael was a beautiful black and rust and super smart and protective of my wife when I was away travelling. She had a litter of 11 pups in 1993 and we kept the only red male, Thor who was so much different than Rachael. He was 28" and usually weighed around 92 lbs and he lived to a good age of 13 1/2 years. My avatar is a picture of Thor when he was around 5 or 6 years old.
    We do miss our Dobe's, the are the best breed ever!!!

    Doberman's in my opinion are in a class all their own. What great companions and so smart. I had two and both died much to young of cardiomyopathy. One sudden death the other more prolonged but had some quality time after putting him on heart meds. My last dog Zeus was the epitome of a Dobie. I couldn't possibly replace him and didn't even try. I miss him everyday.

    OMG I live in Greenville SC!!! To think that it happened here amazes me. Have never heard about that before. I am glad you addressed the "warlock" issue. Same thing applies to "teacup" poodles. I imagine the "warlocks" have the multitude of health problems that any breed has from being bred down to a tiny size. I know people that have gone out of their way and paid more for the smaller sized pet. Then the vet bill normally start rolling in at some point. You CAN NOT explain this to someone who has already decided this is going to be what they do. I feel like people need to beware of ANYONE that ships their puppies also. If you love the breed then you want your puppies to take precedent over money from selling them. Lost a long time client when I tried to explain this to her when she had already decided that was what she was going to do. Every single client I have had that bought a dog on-line and had it shipped ended up with a dog with life long health problems. That particular client had done the same thing with 2 Shar Peis. I loved the client and didn't want her to go through same expenses and heartbreak. Instead I made her mad and she dumped me. Plus, she asked me what I thought. I only replied to her questions otherwise I probably would have kept my thoughts to myself since it wasn't my business. Buyer BEWARE and do some homework about such big decisions.

    I had a Doberman female that weighed around 115 lbs. She lived almost 14 years. There were many so called warlocks in her line. Her brothers weighed closer to 130 to 140 lbs. She did develop hip dysplacia. The first time I took her to her last vet, he had a male Doberman there that was average weight. She dwarfed him. The vet was just so impressed with her .

And for the first few generations you can see that there muzzle is boxed shape more and their eyes are smaller but after about ten or I’m sure less they start to look like a big Doberman. I’m not a breaded or a vet. I’m just passing on info I have learned from my breader and my vet
      I’m sure that that was very impressive though. My last one was 100 lbs when he passed and he was very agile as well

    Great video! I can't believe people would still be using warlock to market their dogs. I was working for a veterinarian in the mid 80s who showed and bred dobermans. He was known for being fantastic at ear cropping. Back then, everyone cropped their doberman's ears. So show breeders of dobies came from several hours away to have him crop their puppies' ears. Back then I learned from show breeders that while the original warlock was just a bloodline, by the 70s and 80s they were mixing great danes in the genepool and so Warlock meant overized doberman just as you said. Though no breeder would admit their dogs were mixed. They just claimed to have oversized dobies. Now with dog DNA tests available to the public, it's easy to see when a dog has some kind of mix in their bloodline. Had DNA been available back then, owners of warlock dobies would have seen great danes in their mix, likely a great grandparent.
    There is always so much controversy around different lines or types of dog of any breed. And there will always be people who claim a bloodline when their dog may have none. A breeder can say their puppies are of X bloodline, when you'd have to go back generations to actually see it, if it's even there. Kind of like a person saying they are related to George Washington, lol. A doberman is a working dog, so when you are getting over 100lbs you are going to get a dog that is more cumbersome plus prone to the health problems and shorter lifespans of giant breeds. I don't know why anyone would want that.

  • @jockwoodsman
    @jockwoodsman 2 роки тому +1

    I'm glad that you are educating people about the fact that Dobermans these dangerous animals that people should fear. They are beautiful gentle animals that need to be raised properly just like any dog and they will act accordingly. Myself and other Doberman owners have no behavioral issues that would be a concern. Place's that ban the breed outright are just misinformed. They are just like any other breed. If they are raised well they are a great addition to one's family

    My mother had a "warlock" Doberman(AKC) back in the early 80s named Midnight Black Satin. These Dobermans have also been known to have a lot of European in their genetics. Several years ago, she bought her 2nd Dobie(AKC) and he topped out at 126lbs. I have never seen a more beautiful dog in my life. I am currently heading to hopefully put a deposit down on a red Dobie puppy. I'm super stoked!!! These puppies have an "X" in their lineage as well which means European 🇪🇺. This is very interesting! This is the first I've seen this video and the first I've ever heard of a "Warlock" Doberman. However, when I was a Navy SEAL in the late 1970s, I adopted an 11 day old Dobie from a guy who fed his pregnant bitch raw pork causing her to contract worms, thus, giving them to her puppies, and the only way I could figure saving at least one of them was to take him ASAP!!! So I did. Unfortunately, he became very sick within the first couple days, so I took him to the vet and he said his outlook was very grim and that the next 48 hours would tell the story. On the way home from the vet's, as I drove, my then girlfriend was holding him and as I drove I kept watching him and he looked weaker and weaker with every passing moment until soon his head drooped and he went completely limp. I was sure he was dead. I, a Navy SEAL, started crying and pulled the car over and took him in my arms and stroked him until I found the life in him return. My girlfriend drove the rest of the way home with me constantly stroking and kissing him and we got him home still barely living. I called into my team and took a weeks leave immediately to care for him. I stayed up all that night laying with him in bed with us and watched him sleep. I guess I eventually dropped of and when I awoke, the little guy was licking my face, cuddled under my chin. He just kept getting stronger from then on. That day I gave him a name "Warlock," for I felt it magic that he had recovered so quickly. He grew to be about 76 pounds (small for a male Dobie) and, unfortunately had hip dysplasia due to the worms infestation, but other than that, he never had a major medical issue and lived to be 11 years old and had to be put to sleep because he could not stand, for his back legs gave out. He was the greatest of the five Dobies I've raised in my lifetime, gentle, athletic for more than half of his life, running and swimming with me regularly. I now live in South Korea as an English professor and current have a 6 month old Dobie I rescued from a idiot Korean who kept the sire and bitch in the back of battery and tire shop (the grounds filthy and littered with waste from the shop). I named my boy "Guinness" because I always wanted to since moving to Korea and discovering I love the stout, Guinness, and since Dobermans have the coloring of a freshly poured Guinness, what the hell!!!

    from what i have found the original "warlock" doberman was a doberman bred with a black great dane to give the dobermans a larger size. from there the first breeders began breeding the larger dobermans in the litters to create a specific line of doberman dane crosses and called them "warlock" dobermans. not that there is anything wrong with that other than they are not truly full dobermans. both dogs are great family dogs, great guard dogs( my doberman guards her couch and kennel at all cost, especially her couch) and are intelligent. still these dogs can be high drive and defense and are really not meant for first time dog owners. research any dog breed or mix of dog breed before you adopt or purchase a pup. it can save you a world of headaches and heartbreaks.

    Ahhhh! This reminded me that the registered name of my first Dobie was Warlock Vom Artel or something. He was born January 1980. I’d never thought of his “real” name prior to watching this video. He was black and red/rust. Very striking fella with a deep chest but quite large for a Doberman and tall weighing in his prime between 100 and 110 lbs - and that may have been partly because we may have been a little over generous with treats. One breeder ascertained it was because we fed liver a fair bit. Who knows? He was the recipient of treats often too. And, heck, we have no kids so the dogs and cat joined us at the table. I once counted he helped himself to no fewer than 13 apples one evening. Didn’t harm him any though. Probably shouldn’t have let him have that many. Or ditto on the roast he was carrying when he met me at the front door as I returned from work.

      @@DobermanPlanet : sadly he passed away at only 7 of cancer. My female was as 2 days shy of her 15 birthday and my little blue male (90 lbs) died in my arms at 12. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of them even now. We planned to build on a larger property where I could keep my horses and buried Amie on that property. We just never got around to building there and had an offer for the land which we sold. My husband brought her coffin back here and she’s under the apple tree with the rest of the gang. I think we are now likely too old to adopt a pup as we have no one to step in to care for him/her should something happen to us in these chaotic times.
      More on Amie: she was amazingly smart to the point her vets wanted he sent to a veterinary facility in Guelph, ON to have her brain waves tested. She was able to reason solutions to problems. Not just being a proud parent here. Loved them all but the boys weren’t destined to be world leaders. Amie even had the cat trained so by the time she became unable to get to the upper cupboards (to reach the butter stored there), the cat was able to get it for her.

    Wilt Chamberlain can’t keep up with that. Lol I got the FI Series 3 and I love it my pup is 8 1/2 months old and in the past 18 days I’ve had him measured against all FI dogs Dobermans and dogs from PA and he breaks records every day as of two days ago he had rose to the top 9% of all the FI dogs. He’s a very beautiful red male and I’ve been raising Dobermans for about 30 years and my first was a black & rust but only red males since.

    hey john!!! how are you doing ? hope you are doing good
    I had a few question in my mind that is
    1] how can we identify that our dog is motivated by treats or attention or anything else?
    2] also how can we identify our dog's favourite toy ?
    i hope you reply :]

    • @vanessabennett7922
      @vanessabennett7922 3 роки тому +1

      I noticed with my doberman that out of all the toys, she prefers a ball on a rope, or any ball for that matter. You can figure it out by testing a variety of toys from soft toys to hard kongs. Does your dog like to chew or chase? You learn just by playing with your dog and testing different toys.
      And with food motivation, is your dog willing to work for food or is your dog more picky and can less about food? I recommend not free feeding your dog and have your dog on scheduled feeding routine. It'll help with food motivation. And you can figure out what your dog is willing to work for by testing different foods. Anything from kibble to string cheese or chunks of chicken.
      You just need to test everything to figure out what works for your dog. Hope that helps.

      Hi, Pratyush! Great question! For the toys, lay them all out in a row. Whichever one he or she continually goes to is the favorite! :) As for treats vs. toys, when your dog does a command correctly, you can hold one in each hand as a reward and see which one he or she chooses first! We'd recommend always giving lots of love and attention either way! Some dogs respond more to praise than treats or toys, but most just like it all!

    My Doberman boy in his prime was 120lbs, very muscular and tall (never measured his height exactly). He had a good AKC pedigree/bloodline, never any hip issues related to size and very fast. I wouldn’t consider 120lbs to be oversized by any means, 140-150lbs however I could see being very cumbersome for a Doberman.

    I understand why some people would like to buy a big Doberman. I would like to promote to stick with the American standard or the German standard because there is a reason why it became a Dobermann/Doberman. Looking at the Dobermann’s from Eastern Europe (show dogs) they are according to me too big chested and some have too big of heads. I wish they would look more athletic and fit so they have the ability to work as hard as they were meant to do. I have recently seen some beautiful once in the UK and Denmark. I can also say that Nordenstamm back in the days had Dobermann’s that looked powerful and fit. I sure don’t want them to start to look like a different breed.
    I had a German Dobermann in the 90’s and he was square, fit and powerful. He first started in schutzhund and later became a professional mildew scent detective. He had to work hard without getting tired. I don’t think he would be as good if he was too big.
    I would love to hear from any of you with a big working Dobermann. How many km can they run?
    Thanks... Have a good day with your dog.

    Plenty of full blooded Dobermans weigh 120 or 125 pounds and stand 29 or 30 inches at the withers. I had a pure bred Dobe who was that large and even fit as hell he stood 30 inches and weighed 120-125.. He was just a large dog and he could trace back to Euro parents. He was also incredibly strong. My other Dobes have all been large but all between 90 and 100 pounds. I loved them all and love the one I still have, and I have also owned other working breeds.

I wanted smaller than that. Are they barkers? Shepherd’s drove me crazy, with the high pitched bark. My last dog was actually a Shepkita and he rarely barked. When he did, it was low and quite intimidating! He was perfect, but Akita’s are aggressive and I’m finished with that. Any info is appreciated!

Recently, my dog's been jumping up a lot on me, I've tried to use the sit command but the moment he realises that I have run out of treats, he jumps up on me. Also, whenever I try to run alongside him, he kind of goes in between my legs and he bites my hand. Also, when my dad tries to pet him, jumps and he tries to bite him and lick his face. He's very aggresive the moment we take away the food or treats that we feed him. Is there anyway, to stop that?
