    Headed up the the Boundary Waters Canoe Area for a couple night 22 mile promenade on the Kekekabic Trail to Disappointment Trail. Just a slight reprieve from life. High winds and on and off rain put a mood on the walk.

    For me retirement has not been easy. I let work be my purpose in life. After a completely unexpected quintuple by-pass a year ago at age 57 you realize how short your time on this beautiful rock is. You also find out who your friends aren’t, kind of an awakening. We decided I would retire so we could do the things we had planned to do later in life now. You just never know what life has in store for you. We bought a 5th wheel and spend as much time camping as we can.

      Both my parents passed two years ago and I just had a knee replaced at 52, those two things really have me thinking about using the rest of my time wisely. One of the last wise things my mother told me as her life was slipping away was, “ whatever your going to do you better get busy doing it.” That rings in my head like a bell. Happy camping!

    Shug, been watching you do these since 2013, never a disappointment. I can relate to your recent circumstances, at the end of my military career I had spent the last portion with JSOC and the let down from all that was huge. Your videos have really helped me get out there, despite injuries, and enjoy it.
    Thanks Sean.

    I came out from a BW canoe trip on Sept 2 -- 3 days earlier than planned -- because I knew from the weather radio that those high winds were coming. The night of the 1st (last night of my trip), a thunderstorm rolled through. Heavy rain, lots of lightning. I didn't think it was all that windy and was more worried about the lightning and possibility of a fire with the dry conditions as I huddled in my sleeping bag in my tent. The tent pad I'd set up on was surrounded by healthy looking young spruce trees. Not a "widow-maker" in sight. As I huddled there, I heard a "crack" and the sound of a tree falling. Next morning, when I got up, there was a tree across the latrine trail, only a few yards from my tent. This tree was identical to those "healthy" looking young spruce trees that surrounded my tent. Just goes to show that it's not just those gnarly old dead trees that come down in the storms. Not sure if that tree would have been heavy enough to be an actual widow maker but it definitely could have done some damage. This was my 74th BW canoe trip (I'm 67 years young, btw) -- and, I learned something new that night.

It's just getting the first foot into the car and going that always seems to be the hardest part. Seeing this video reminded me again of why I want to go out there and be in the woods and nature and all of that. so Thank you Shug again for this.

    Critters, rain and wind gusts oh my! That chipmunk wins on being fully confident. At least he was nicer than the canoe k-9.
    I love the trips where mother nature throws us a curve ball. That's the stuff memories are made from. Good soliloquy on pack weight. Agreed about "whatever gets you outside" and that it's always adjusting. I take it all trip by trip. Went on a day hike yesterday with the whole crew to a waterfall. My day pack weight was heavier than what I normally carry on a weekend trip.

    I got to watch this on a nice cool, breezy night laying in my hammock!
    I got my Wooki wet today (haha - I can say things that sound dirty too). I was pleased to find that even in 100% humidity at about 55°F it dried out just from laying in it. I'm car camping, and I'm glad to have learned this when there's no safety risk. I would have been somewhat worried if it was a little colder and I was out hiking and it got wet. Now I know I can just lay in it and it will dry out. A little splashing isn't dangerous, but certainly something to be avoided.
    I'm still perfecting my new tarp setup and my doors ended up being too close to the quilt and splashing rain was getting up underneath. I figured out how to get the doors closed further away using just the four main stakes.
    It's fun learning new equipment, it's even more fun when it's dialed in!
    Whooo Buddy! All secure and dry in this sector!

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  4 роки тому

      If you spread the tarp a little wider it really helps with rain splash in most cases. So does soft ground. Whoooooo Buddy)))))
