Agree that being in the wilderness makes me appreciate all that is good in life. Another thing that makes me appreciate the good? Watching Shug's videos. Thanks.
Man, looks like fun. I hope someday I will have a prosthetic knee good enough to make hikes like that. Till then I live vicariously through you Shug, thanks for the great videos.
Thank you Shug for your videos and for reminding everyone that life is still good. This winter has been almost too much for us in the Northeast but it's good to hear your praise. Your videos mean more than you know!
Great Lakes = Great Place. Peace & Solitude. No Law & Vegrants Stumbling Across the Hammock! Thanks for modeling the good gear & excellent setup Shug! [Big fan here. Inspired. Learning camera work & hope to put it out there too! Learning lot's of work it is--so a big thanks!] And thanks to all who broadcast the good news!
Shug, thanks for the "push for positive" at the end. People or generally good and decent and we just need reminded by a little adventure, a little tom-foolery, and mother nature, now more than ever. I've been hammock camping with you (through your videos) for almost 10 years now and you feel like a friend. yep Whoa Buddy.
I've been watching you for 4 years and thank you for getting me into hammock camping. It's the best. I'm not far from Linville Gorge and can appreciate you and Hickory's adventures there. Long live the Maple King!! I like seeing you in the colder temps, getting some good pointers on how to stay warm in the colder temps. It gets cold (16 degrees)here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Keep the videos coming. They are much appreciated and enjoyed. Thanks for your work in publishing these videos.
widowmaker , hahaha. i have seen more than a dozen of ,,survivors, hammockers, nature-enthusiasts,, and how ever u wanna call these kind of guys ( and girls), but SHUG is UNBEATABLE THE BEST ! ! ! KEEP MAKING ME SMILE AND FEEL HAPPY, SHUG,- THANK U SOOOOOO MUCHO.
Shug, you're truly an inspiring individual. Can't tell you how much your videos helped me reconnect with my love of camping, which then helped me reconnect with friends I was starting to lose touch with. Life is way too short to waste on the daily grind with no fun in between, and without any time spent out among the trees and rocks that will be here long after we're gone. Thanks from me, and many others!
Just moved out across the country and was missing the ole piney woods of my home. Watched me some Shug and felt much better. Thanks always for yer goofy self Shug!
Great outing Shug! My back is out but my spirits are high. I see the doctor on Thursday and maybe he can work some magic to get me moving again. Had my coffee and watched the sun rise into the clouds, great start to the day. Television and the news are too negative for me, we are so lucky to have UA-cam with great videos like yours. Thank you! Sincerely, Ossie
Looked like a fun trip Shugg. My 6yo daughter loves watching your videos with me. Every time she sees you she says shug shug shugity shug shug. Keep the videos coming you are an inspiration to hangers everywhere.
This past memorial day weekend I did my first overnight in a hammock. It was a blast! I've been watching your videos since March of this year, and I've learned a ton. Thanks for the information and the entertainment. I think I'm going to be a permanent hammock convert. Thanks Shug!
That ULA catalyst holds more than I thought. All that gear and a soap box! Great vid Shug, getting out in nature just seems to get me centered and more at peace. Thanks for taking the time to show your setup too. Eric
Good editorial Shug. I'm dying of kidney failure but always find the outdoors refreshing and a step out of the daily routines of drugs and being hooked up to a machine that keeps me alive. I had planned on doing the Appalachian Trail before I got sick but that probably won't happen now. Regardless, being outside changes your worries and reminds you of how awesome Earth really is.
Thank you very much for all of your videos, your humor is awesome and so much energy. I have been looking in to a hammock for backpacking and you have given me so many ideas. Thanks again✌️
Shug, It was nice to see a clear sky above you. It beats that "Chemtrail" clouds in many other UA-cam videos. Always glad to share your positive view of the world. Kudos, Mate!
I do like your outdoors videos. We all, including myself need to get out in the wilderness more. There is nothing like the calm & peace you get from it. I call my woods, my Fortress of Solitude. Take care Shug.
Watching this again....always see things I've missed....I missed first time around that you use your Reflexiit as a little flat table to lay your breakfast food out on to keep it off the snow.......great idea.
Thats some beautiful country out there. Your right, to be out in the wilderness just brings everything into perspective. Thanks for sharing Shug atb Si
Great video Shug!! It's just about impossible to be negative when your out in beautiful nature. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. Be blessed my friend. John
Taking us back to basics, nicely done sir! Generally most people bail on me so 90% of my trips are solo. When soloing I also tend to be more careful when traversing terrain. I read a quote the other day way people do this sort of thing, "To be able to breathe freedom".
Finally have my order in with HG. Getting a top quilt. Whoo buddy. Super cool. Camo extra wide. Have had the the warbonnet up doing testing with rig held up great through wind rain dry as a bone can't get over how much more comfortable this system is compared to my own bed, which seems primitive at this point. Absolutely hands down best comfort zone to date. I relayed this information to the iss space station as well AstroSamantha. Lol thanks Shug. Happy sleeping
Awesome video, sure did like your words,so true. I am also looking forward to getting a hammock and tarp and going one night cold weather camping. It wont be long.....saved the most expensive things for last. Thanks for the smiles!!!
Love your videos. Many years ago when my son was in Cub Scouts (he's 29 now) I asked him if he liked camping and he replied "You bet dad!" "What do you like the best?" He quickly replied: "Sleeping and eating!" Yep, we never outgrow that. He earned his Eagle Scout and to this day we both stand by that statement. Oh yeah, my instant coffee of choice is now Medaglia D'Oro Coffee and for some reason I keep watching Sling Blade. Strange!
Shug I enjoy your videos hugely. Thanks so much for making it happen. You (and Tom Allen) inspired me to take a hammock on my last cycle tour of the Balkans. I'm glad I did mainly for the comfort. After cycling all day, being in the hammock feels like sleeping on air and is perfect for getting a decent length of sleep and properly resting your muscles. Down side was cold - it was a fair bit colder than I expected int the valleys of Montenegro in May where there was still snow on the ground. Also sometimes it was a real effort to find trees to hang from. Not that there weren't trees, the Balkans are an incredible wilderness but the trees are in many cases small, slopes are very steep and the forests impossible to penetrate. On balance a tent would have been easier, but the hammock was a joy to sleep in so it was worth the effort. Anyway, thanks again :)
Man, Shug, you crack me up! I'm a big fan already, but when you mentioned Lonesome Dove......you really pulled my heart strings! Keep up the good work my friend! If I ever get to Minnesota, I'd love to camp with ya and share some stories!!
Some free LifeCoaching too.........WHOOOOOOO. That's awesome. The sounds of the rushing waters and your ice shelf speech. Shit, I'm ready to take on the world mate....lol. Nice toilet in the middle of the woods there.
I started hammock camping one year ago this month. With friends, or solo, I love it. I need to try it in the snow now! Your video rocked man! Love your attitude!
Currently stationed overseas in South America. Have quite a variety of outdoors to pitch a hammock from mountain, jungle and coast.... still learning the best ways to stay dry, warm, cool....and not eaten up by insects. :)
Thanks for sharing your trip Shug. I agree with your editorial. We are not guaranteed each day, so we have to find the joy and inspiration in each one. I be headin' out next weekend, not sure where, but I will give a whoobuddy in your honor. Hike On!
you're awesome man, I find myself watching your videos all the time and you're always super inspiring and remind everyone to look for the good in everything, keep it up shug!
This is a really practical looking set-up, I think I'll copy you for most of mine. I like the way all the bags and snake skins are stored on the line, it makes everything really neat and tidy.
Awesome Awesome Video!!! Great sceneries, a lot's good information presented in really great and funny way. The best bushcraft/hiking/outdoor related video on the entire UA-cam, period!! I laughed that hard so I started crying!! Keep up the Superior work!! Best regards from Sweden Joakim
Shug you always crack me up... In a good way! Motivated me to head out and test some new gear and I too boiled water to make my dinn'ah... :) I can't wait until we get some warm weather!
Thanks for the info shug, starting on hammocks this year for bikepacking and this was good info on sort of gauging and setting up your tent using simple things like "sitting comfortably" this is a great gauge. I am in MN also born in Owatonna live in Minneapolis now. Got a lot of family in Cloquet.
Just found your videos and love them. I am more of a bush crafter now but have a background in backpacking. I appreciate you content, positivity, and frivolity. Keep it up man.
I was looking for pictures of Finland and found your wonderful video. Coming up to look at buying a little lodge and campground. I feel inspired now. Thank you so much
true legend... masters like shug made me to try hammocking not only in summer... so I slided my cheap nylon hammock into my old lightweight 750g sleeping bag (and here comes my invention: yes, two holes, then "sealed", maintains airgap even better than underquilt), added emergency foil as a heat reflector, and another light sleeping bag into (would work better under/over) for spring/autumn or heavy one for winter... works like charm, just lacking -40, so I'm always too warm, sleeping in base layer
woooo buddy! that's a nice overnighter. I want to come far enough north to see aurora borealis and hammock camp in that kind of weather. Thanks for sharing.
you made that refreshing video always watch your videos all the way thorough loved the Billie Bob talks was one of the greats. I've never been in a hammock to camp just bought my outfit with a sleep pad hope to have some fun this spring with it. thanks again.
Thanks for yet another great video Shug!!!! Great entertainment, and the end motivational was awesome! I am one of those with jobs that see plenty of negativity in the world. Keep the videos coming! I also appreciate the knowledge you share about gear and hammock techniques. Stay Safe Brother
This was great. Wish you would always show the rig set up and take down on future videos or at lease some of the set up/take down..... Beautiful snow country and ...your" talk about life".... toward the end....well...everyone should listen to it! You're right!! Thanks for going out and doing the video.
Using the boot claws is great advice. My son broke both bones in his forearm two years ago when he slipped and took the full weight of his pack on it. We went to the same place again this year but with the claws this time. He kept them on the entire weekend and didn't slip once.
Shug ... You're like the Robbin Williams of backpacking!! Your videos never disappoint! Keep up the work!
+Rich Ellis Allrighty......tough shoes to fill.
+Rich Ellis Absolutely. Well said.
Yeahhh hahaha that's true, he's kind of robin williams in the forrest

Shug I enjoy your videos hugely. Thanks so much for making it happen. You (and Tom Allen) inspired me to take a hammock on my last cycle tour of the Balkans. I'm glad I did mainly for the comfort. Using the boot claws is great advice. My son broke both bones in his forearm two years ago when he slipped and took the full weight of his pack on it. We went to the same place again this year but with the claws this time. He kept them on the entire weekend and didn't slip once.
