Thank you Shug, for all your work, personality and attitude that you give so naturally! You are an inspiration and a wonderful encouragement. Big love from Quebec Canada! Thanks again for sharing, you are a gift!
Hi Shug, just started hammocking this year after several years on the ground...50 now, and definitely like the air. You deserve some kind of reward my man for all the amazing content you have here. Thanks for making things easier for me (and what looks like 60k or so others lol). Just subscribed today, thanks for all that you do!
Thanks for all of your videos. I watch, learn, and can't wait for the snowpack to get down a little in the Sierras so my daughter and I can try our 1st overnight in the snow. Thanks again!
I camp with my truck now days I can't hike any more but I still love getting out so I bring all kinds of stuff with me me and the grandkids are working on a cabin out in the woods we enjoy it it's fun to have them with me I appreciate you sharing with us you take care until next time
What I really like to do is put in a half sandwich size baggie is dehydrated hummus. Sometimes it's hard to find but Winco on the west coast has it in bulk or sometimes on Amazon. I put just enough in for 2 tortillas. I add water to the baggie (NOT TOO MUCH!), squish it around, cut or tear the corner with your teeth and you can squeeze the hummus on the tortilla. Occasionally I'll add dehydrated tomatoes (not to much! ass burn, as they say) or some olives that come in a foil packet. Great first or second lunch!! ~Dos
On my thru hike I had a few care packages 📦 that were sent to me on the trail with well cooked bacon and sausage vacuum sealed. Worked out great! 😀👍🌳🔥⛺️ right on Shug! Woo buddy! Yer food bag sure does look good with mustard hmmm hmmm 😀
I second that, I too am heading out this weekend, Louisville Swamp for an overnighter and would love to know how the pancakes go. pancakes from the hammock, may be too good to be true.
Took your advice on the Packit Gourmet items and they were amazing. Wife and I did some trail magic handing out some varieties when on the AT a couple of weeks ago. Chicken and Dumplings and State Fair Chili were big hits. We will be packing some on our first ever SHT hike in early October, Onion River to Temperance River. Thanks for all the advice and videos!!!
I love your humor love the deliverance of your presentation your facial.expressions and animated voices and info in general ......the music tbe unicycl all part and partial to great times and back yard hanging out or the hikes and camping great stuff from dundas ontaruo farthest wezt end of lake ontario
Down here in Iowa....as the snow fell I told my wife "I bet there's some folks heading out to Yellow River State Forest tonight to hang their hammocks"!......and with the same thought, I knew this weather would be too good for you to resist, haha. Thanks for the tips, I'm heading to the Boundary Waters in September, and I just want to say thank you for rekindling my interest in wilderness adventures, your videos have really helped me find that confidence again:-).
Thanks, Shug! I just found Justin's maple & almond butter packets in my local Safeway store. My goodness those are addicting....I've listened to you talk about how good those Justin peanut butter packets are for an easy snack while hiking. Had to try for myself....whoa...so good!
This is a great and simple for food planning my boyscout troop is planning our first backpacking weekend will be showing them ''tis so the can see how simple it is thanks again for the good info
You gonna take that Circuit out for a spin Shug? Hope you have a safe trip. I'll be in your pocket for most of the trip. Hope to be on a ramble myself in a few days. Finally got a few days of cold in the South. Keep Sector Seven secure.
Very similar food styles. My favorite first breakfast is eggs in a bag. At home break 2-4 eggs into a heavy duty quart zip top bag. In second zip top bag put omelet stuff you like, for me its crumbled up bacon, shredded cheese, chives and a packet of hot sauce. Put egg bag in the other bag and pack. The next AM pour 1 bag into the other, squish up everything to mix it, then pop it into boiling H20. After the egg has formed a skin, pull the bag out and apply pressure to it to pop the egg like a zit, then back into the H20 to finish cooking what came out.... Very yummy and it'll keep for a day or two before cooking.
I have a couple of ursacks. Love them for my canoeing trips where I feel they rock.. I've brought one on my multi-day hikes and think it's okay - but a weight penalty. I like the Zpacks food bag better for hiking - but that's just me. YMMV.
shugemery unless you don't hang it. I never hang. i just tie it to a tree like I do the ursack. Never had an issue. I.am more concerned with mice, squirrels and pine martens than I am with bears.
Nothing wrong with that menu at all. It's refreshing how down to earth you are. Too many people online that tell us there's only one way to do things..lol.
YOU ROCK! I just found your channel. I'm not a backpacker, but I'm going to do some minimalist motorcycle trips (1-3 days). I am considering Hammock sleeping. But have never slept in a hammock. I'm going to do a Back Yard trial, your Hammock vids are the bomb, and you have some great ideas, very helpful, thanks! And you're funny! (But looks aren't everything! HAHA!). Cheers from Michigan!
UPDATE: I've been hammock camping since I originally replied to this post (over a year ago). I love it. I even keep a cheapo hammock with those quick-straps in my motorcycle bag at all times! I stop and toss it up for a nap from time to time. Even at a rest stop once. - The attendant came and told me "there is no camping at the rest area". HA! I'm just taking a short break, I told him. Also, Pancakes. in a bag, GREAT IDEA! I used my vacuum sealer, it worked out pretty well! Thanks Sean!
Look into getting a vacuum sealer thingy. They work well to make these pouches you can heat submerged in hot water. You can even do a sort of "canning" procedure with them. It should make little difference whether or not you use glass mason jars or a plastic food safe bag to cook, sterilize or in the end heat the food up. I use a vacuum sealer and some slightly heavier duty plastic food safe cooking bags to cook some things sous vide (look that one up while you are at it...you won't regret it..) Also a dehydrator could work well for preparing meal pouches. You could dry the ingredients (veggies and even meats) and cook/rehydrate them on the trail. Could be done if factory made pouches work...
Another great one, shug! Love the vids, especially when it's been months since I've been out camping myself. I'm envious of the 'breakfast in the hammock' idea. I'm way too much of a slob, too worried about spilling on myself. That of course requires that I get out, get dressed, get COLD, and then make breaky!
Hey Shug, Have you tried the breakfast biscuits called belVita? They're in the cookie section of the grocery stores. They have a peanut butter sandwich one that's pretty good. Thanks for sharing with us and have a safe and fun trip my friend. Lookin forward to da overnighta wit da hammuk man! LOL...
Dollar Tree sells Bacon Jerky, basically pre cooked bits of bacon in small resealable pouches. One bag will provide enough for two small omelettes, or add to grits, dehydrated mashed potatoes, or make one decent sandwich. Not slices, but small pieces. Big Lots has individual slice of Spam in a foil pouch. I pack small tortilla shells instead of bread. Nice vids!
Yup Packet Gourmet has some good choices for chow. Ive been using them and some others and mix them up to make a very nice dinner and desert combo. Good to go, Omeals( which are like MTRE's except taste way better), Paleo Meals just to name a few have different meal choices and really set you up for success for the next day with all the nutrients you need. And for those who don't know, The Ursack is not approved for all areas as a Bear proof container. Check you local Ranger for more info. Thanks Shug, I really enjoyed that vid.
Enjoy your stroll, we are in the middle of a 20" snow event here in the keystone state. No hiking for me today. This storm will put Dutch a day behind in Chameleon production! LOL
Great video dude! Gave me some new ideas! Also, have you tried the Knorr rice and pasta packs from the grocery store? They're about a $1.50 each, and all you do is open the top of the bag, add around 10oz of boiling water, stir it up, fold the top down and let sit about 7 minutes, that's all! Knorr makes for a great handwarmer too, when you're sitting around camp on a cold night! Raman noodles are also a good one when you need a quick snack on the go. The Great White North reference was hilarious btw!
It is nice to see you so excited about your upcoming trip!!! can wait to see the video from it. By the way you should try some lingonberry jam with those pancakes and bacon, really tasty. Cheers from Sweden
I'm just getting into backpacking/hiking/camping and I actually found this video to be really encouraging! Thank you! Now I'll feel no shame over bringing my Norwegian version of Mountain House and a large bar of chocolate and all the coffee I can muster :D
Shugemery, I have been watching hours upon hours of backpacking related topics from all different youtube channels and just stumbled upon yours. I must say you have more personality than the whole lot of them combined. You are funny as all get out. These younger youtubists can't hold a candle to you.
I had an idea on what to use as a boil in bag=a crockpot liner. Tie the corner up like your coffee and drop into the water. Plus the bag is big enough to do this twice. Crockpot liner withstands a boil and high heat just not an open flame.
Thanks Shug! kids are off next week and we're hitting the SHT! 2 nighter. Because I am now the proud owner of a ULA Ohm!! Whoo buddy! And we will be trying some of those pancakes! Great idea!
Hey Shug, love the video. I finally broke down and found some Madeglia d'oro instant espresso coffee. After hearing you say it for years, I had to try it! It is very good! Thanks for the videos.
Yeah, I should not have had a cup of this a couple hours before bed! It was worth the drive (30+ miles) to find at a Target store. Thanks again for the great videos!
I suppose I'll ask the question on everyone's mind; if given the opportunity, would you be willing to be the first person to hammock on Mars? Love the simplicity you role with. Growing up a tent camper, meals usually required a Coleman two-burner stove. I look forward to the trip, Shug! Happy hiking, stay safe!
Hey shug, speaking of pancakes, there's company named Bridgford I think the name is and they have a product that's a mix between a poptart and French toast. Each pack has 2 individualy sealed bags, kinda like mre bread. There's syrup all throughout the inside, kinda like a McDonald's mcgriddle and the outside is the so called French toast. Its actually pretty good. It can be eaten cold or boiled like you do your pancakes. You can get them direct from bridgfords website but my Walmart usually has them in the camping section. They also make a sloppy Joe like BBQ in the same fashion. I didn't care much for it though. My 4yo daughter LOVES the French toast though, so much so that when I get them for a trip I have to buy here a pack. Give em a try!!
Really enjoyed this video, and I especially like the way you talk. Mmmhmm. The line "There's an ear in there and a snoot and a snout" literally had me laughing to tears. Thank you!
I am a cyclist and I’ve always wanted to find a way to take extra servings of my electrolyte powder on my 100mi races. Thanks to you, Shug, I have found a simple solution to that problem!! Your Me-da-glee-ah-do-ro method has more applications than you think 😜
They sell crepes (thin pancakes) in the produce section at my grocery store. And I can get maple flakes (solid syrup). That and butter and you're ready to go for breakfast. I haven't done this yet, but it should work.... how to heat... maybe wrap one around your coffee cup and inside your cup cozy for a bit?
For holding your coffee, check into tupperware at 2nd hand stores. I got several 1 ounce lidded containers for holding my tea and coffee. less plastic baggies, less chance of it getting ripped and waste and the tupperware if it gets mangled, Tupperware replaces it free of charge.
I know this is an older video but I just watched it. After hearing Shug sing the praises of Madaglia D'Oro I just bought some for my next trip...I bet it's going to be Shugilicious!
Great stuff, Shug. For me it's Tea..Porridge . Hammock nap then coffee and a CO CO bar of my choice like the magnum peanut butter bars right now Mmmmm MMM
I love me some Mountain House Breakfast Skillet in the morning. I will bring tortillas and crispy precooked bacon which I have also been known to keep in the pack for a few days. I also will bring hot sauce. Whooooo buddy! Only prep is to boil water. You can heat the tortillas over a fire or not.
Like your earth sack.! The last group backpack trip the weekend after thanksgiving 2018 was freezing rain. Two others hung their food in a tree, and in the morning, couldn't get it down because the rope froze to the tree. If it wasn't for the skid of left over lumber for the shelter at the tree, they would of never gotten their breakfast down. ROFL. THinking back, a bear would of used the wood pile to get their food too. ;-)
Definitely think someone should get on that pancake idea. Sounds like a good one an probley a money maker. Ild definitely buy such an item. Going to also have to try the spam spread. The slice singles always been my go to. More due to I font tend to eat it unless I fry up that little slice some. Just don’t seem an good unfried
I've been pre-making some pancakes at home and bringing them from time to time. I add bacon to them. They are OK. I guess you could bring those store bought frozen ones but I never found them that good. Maybe they taste better in the woods though....
Been followin you for over 7 years and missed you one OCT 2010. I was the gy who recommended your hat change. lol. So happy you are still doin the grind! Hickory/EMS BUDDY, cracks me up. Sorry I missed ya on that trip. As a request, think we would all like a daily vlog for a week if you could, would?
my bear keg arrives tomorrow hopefully... im thru hiking the AT and you are require in 3 areas to have a bear canister now. never tried one before so it will be an experience. figure it is a chair and wash tub for clothes and other uses as well...
Awsum vid I'll haft to get a couple of those bags for my son and I we love hammock Camping. I took my son out and got him a hammock and now he never leaves home without it he take to school and on his lunch he sets it up and has his lunch and chills in his hammock.
This guy needs to be recognized as a national hero.
Shug, you rock. Thank you for sharing.
Correction: INTERNATIONAL hero.
Correction: INTER-GALACTIC Hero. Thanks Shug!
Thank you Shug, for all your work, personality and attitude that you give so naturally! You are an inspiration and a wonderful encouragement. Big love from Quebec Canada! Thanks again for sharing, you are a gift!
Salut!
I freaking love your "Slingblade" impressions!
Yess'm. We done made friends....uhmhmmm
Never get tired of hearing you say "Me-da-glee-ah-do-ro"
I like saying "Me-da-glee-ah-do-ro".
Weekend Wanderer ditto!
or cocoa
Great video! Do you eat out of your pot or do the freezer bag cooking? Also, you should try the Cafe Bustello coffee singles. They're pretty good too.
I eat out of my pot. Cafe Bustello is my second choice brew...Medaglia D'oro is my first choice. Both fun to say though.

Thanks, Shug! I just found Justin's maple & almond butter packets in my local Safeway store. My goodness those are addicting....I've listened to you talk about how good those Justin peanut butter packets are for an easy snack while hiking. Had to try for myself....whoa...so good!
Nice to keep one in your pocket for a quick boost.
Seemed simple enough for me. I love pack it gourmet.
Thanks for the video
Yessir.
Love all those things but I have to carry a buffet of Clif bars. Have a great trip!
They are a meal in themselves.
Thank you for the video.
I will try out some PackitGourmet this spring.
Tell them Shug sent you.
Great system shug. Packed many meals in similar fashion. My camping friends used to say he won't stave to death laughing at the size of my meal pack.
Why be hungry...right?
Shug. Your the good kind of nut. Enjoying life and having fun with it.
Righto!
Thanks for sharing. You are always successful in getting a laugh.
Thank you.
Recommend polenta grits (1/4cup) and 3/4 cups of water. I add bacon bits and red peppers to the dry grits and vacuum seal. Great stuff
Yum!
Shug, always informative, and of course entertaining; thank you for what you do 👍👍
Y'elcome and thankee.

Captain K-man using freeze dried egg might work well, also. I'm going to try it both ways. good suggested method.

I agree! Had some really amazing coffee from the hammock this morning. No brrreakfast from the hammock, unfortunately, as my oatmeal failed... #noob

Hmmmmm......very interesting looking. May have to investigate.
Really enjoyed this video, and I especially like the way you talk. Mmmhmm. The line "There's an ear in there and a snoot and a snout" literally had me laughing to tears. Thank you!
Yessir....thankee then.
“They weave dreams into it”. Lol. You are now my favorite UA-camr.
Whooooooo Buddy)))))
great sling blade impersonation! love ya man, watch all your videos!
Thankee.
I am a cyclist and I’ve always wanted to find a way to take extra servings of my electrolyte powder on my 100mi races. Thanks to you, Shug, I have found a simple solution to that problem!! Your Me-da-glee-ah-do-ro method has more applications than you think 😜
I feel ya!!!! nod wink.
Lemme know how it goes.
Thanks for the food bag tour!! Excellent!
Y'elcome
Shug, I love your videos. Very informative, entertaining. You are very knowledgeable. I am subscribing.
Glad I can help a bit. Whooooo Buddy)))))
Enjoying your tips, lots of really useful info
Y'elcome and thankee.
For holding your coffee, check into tupperware at 2nd hand stores. I got several 1 ounce lidded containers for holding my tea and coffee. less plastic baggies, less chance of it getting ripped and waste and the tupperware if it gets mangled, Tupperware replaces it free of charge.
Thankee. The plus to the wee baggies are they don't take up much room in my morning breakfast pack.
Ecologically...great idea.
Shug, I bought your shirt and hope to run into you wearing it around, let's say, LLC. Much love. Whoo Buddy!
I thankee for that.
You should do one about the instant coffees , always great to see your view on things you do crack me up !

Great Video! I love the ursack. I got one to cause I was tired of trying to find the right spot to hang my food. Can't wait for the trip report!
Me too.
I love the playing at the end. Thanks for the vid
That feller. Love that tune. Working at it a while.
Great stuff, Shug. For me it's Tea..Porridge . Hammock nap then coffee and a CO CO bar of my choice like the magnum peanut butter bars right now Mmmmm MMM
Sounds very good.
Easy stuff good stuff.
ROFL. THinking back, a bear would of used the wood pile to get their food too. ;-)
So far so good with the ursack. I could see that line freezing like that.
Have a great trip. Thanks for the laugh when you were talking about the spam spread.. Made me LOL Hilarious.
Thank you.
Something about the way you say "Big Fat Ounce" makes me smile.
I was a child of the 70s~~~~;-)
Good thoughts on prepping your food! I like the precooked bacon idea! Cheers, Marc
Easy and good.

Right good stuff.
When I went to Philmont, they had spam in a pouch like the tuna. Might be nice to not have to carry the can.
I like the taste of the Spam in the can...spicier somehow,
