What a great trip. The best part for me what the smile on the young mans face when he met you. That’s pretty cool that you have touched and been a positive influence on his young life that he’ll remember. Well done sir! So glad you’re back out in the woods. Happy trails Shug!
SHUG, got and suggestion. I've been drinking Turkish coffee for 25 years. 10 years ago I started using it as instant coffee. If you have the super fine coffee, 2 teaspoons in a mug and pour boiling water, stir for a little longer than you'd think, wait for the grounds to settle and voila. Experiment with the strength of coffee you enjoy. 2 teaspoons is just my preference. Enjoy
@@shugemery No waiting involved. Try it. The stirring is for the grounds to absorb the water and sink. My cup takes less than 5 seconds. Thanks for keep your eyes on the comments. You've been an inspiration. For camping and life :)

Great video and wonderful location. I always think how lucky people are to have these sorts of places right in their backyards, but then you mentioned a 5hr drive, so it's kind of reassuring to hear that others have to do a bit of a mission to get these beauty spots as well.
Skimmed into this & already love the hammock concepts & good characters; I'll pop back in a bit & take it all in. The ideas that you do not need, nor do main-stream hammocks & tarps necessarily prevail: there is always room to innovate. I love having the pad & ground options: more positions, inflate on train exhibition car at night to sleep, easy sleep at a bus layover or airport, and comfortable stracture-sleep-number hammock bed. Waiting on two of those Wilderness Innovations Hammock-Shelter-ponchos.
We were there too. We went to Whiskey Jack looking for you. I guess we missed you. Maybe next time. It was a pleasure sharing the woods with you though
It's funny you mentioned the spot where something felt off. Theres a state forest near me here in Wisconsin that this one spot I go to, feels off and I am uneasy about it every time I'm there. I even tried to do a dispersed camp there once and I bailed. I think we have remanences of a sense from a time when we were more wild. A sense that helps to keep us safe in the woods.
Not a Chanterelle! The mushroom you showed at the beginning had true gills. Chanterelles have veins that run halfway down the stem. All chanterelles have veins including Black trumpets, and Cinnabar Chanterelle.
I second that diagnosis Timothy. I found gobs of those false chanterelles, got home and did the search, whaa. The gills on them flex like paper. Chowed down on the black trumpets and chicken of the woods though.

Really cool kick off to the primo camping season soon to be upon us. I'm glad you guys got to meet up. Might make ole "Hickery" jealous! 😂 Enjoyed as always brother!
Shug and Bill Withers and nature. That’s some good stuff! The singing made me think of one of my favorite songs you do, “Brown Mountain Lights.” Hunting for Lloyd…maybe you and Hickery need to track down some ghost lights. And eat some BBQ, of course. A pleasure as always!
Shug ,you did it again out of the park. The missing people stuff is all over the USA. It's not fun to think that can't happen to me .... Anyway how is the wifey she mending OK we hope. Snowing today thats Wyoming.
That might well have been a chanterelle - next time note if the "gills" are more ridges or folds instead of true gills. Meaning they aren't easily damaged if you run your finger across them. Also chanterelles won't usually be in stacked clumps like the poisonous jack o' lantern mushroom which its sometimes confused with. They'll instead be a bunch growing out of the ground separately.
Currently watching this in a Haven Tent! Just got it in the mail today, so of course I'm sleeping in it tonight at my house. So far, I'm impressed! Definitely heavier than I'd like, but for weekend trips I think it'll do just fine.
Hey shug, don't know if you've ever had any but "no bake cookies" are great for camping. Chocolate peanut butter oat cookies. Make em as big or small as you wanna I always have a bag to snack on when I'm hiking in and around Caledonia state park! They're great
Definitely NOT a chanterelle, lol. The give-away is the free-standing, easily-broken gills rather than folds and bridges like you see in chants. Probably a Russula. Edibility would depend on whether or not it's acrid/hot to the taste when nibbled (don't eat the hot ones - they won't kill you, but they might make you wish it for a bit). That second yellow one is an unrelated species, I think.
I just hiked the Smokies with my Haven. It's a bit heavy but I sleep so well in it I don't care! The cross bars are great for airing out your undies and socks.
Thanks for bringing the XL along for another adventure. With some wise words about the wilderness too 🙏 Just spent a few days at Disney World and Universal Studios with the kids… 😯 quiet by the lake beats fun from a firehose any day 😂
It sure slept me well. We took our daughter to Disney World when she was 6 and stayed a week on Disney property. I think I had the best time as I live in a fantasy world.
I have a trip planned for a couple of weeks from now to do angleworm. And I have the regular haven. I have it rigged up with dutch straps and buckles, using it with a dutch extra light winter tarp.
Totally decreased some weight. It is a cool rig. And has it's place. Sometimes I think we worry about packweight too much. My pack in the 1970s.......crazy to think.
I’m sticking with my XLC Blackbird but that hammock looked like a super king sized bed in the penthouse at some swank, “SWANK” Los Vegas Casino Hotel. Good video. 👍🏕🇨🇱

Also chanterelles won't usually be in stacked clumps like the poisonous jack o' lantern mushroom which its sometimes confused with. They'll instead be a bunch growing out of the ground separately.
Thankee.
Awesome trip, awesome company. Woooo budeeehhh
Whooooooo Buddy)))))
Currently watching this in a Haven Tent! Just got it in the mail today, so of course I'm sleeping in it tonight at my house.
So far, I'm impressed! Definitely heavier than I'd like, but for weekend trips I think it'll do just fine.
I make it lighter by using a different tarp I own and different suspension and lighter biners. Once in the pack it is easy enough to tote.
You are very entertaining! Thank you for the video and the hammock review. 👍
A humble thanks.
Hey shug, don't know if you've ever had any but "no bake cookies" are great for camping. Chocolate peanut butter oat cookies. Make em as big or small as you wanna I always have a bag to snack on when I'm hiking in and around Caledonia state park! They're great
I do some no-bake snowshoe cookies for winter. Peanut butter, dates and chocolate. Good energy and tasty!!
Another great video! Thanks shug.
Glad you enjoyed it! Whoooooo Buddy)))))
Thankee for the chantarelle intel~~
Good to see another great video from ya Shug!
Whooooooo Buddy)))))
Thanks for the video shug!
Y'elcome and thankee.
It's funny how the day after I get back from hammocking in the woods I find myself watching Shug hammocking in the woods.
Hope you had a goodie.
What a lovely video, really glad you shared it with us.
Glad you enjoyed it....Whooooooo Buddy)))))
i thank its odd on the items from no where that we bring for camping with new friends
again Shugg a most awesome video
My thoughts exactly. They were a pleasure.
I just hiked the Smokies with my Haven. It's a bit heavy but I sleep so well in it I don't care! The cross bars are great for airing out your undies and socks.
Like some people we hang out with....worth the weight~~!
Thanks for bringing the XL along for another adventure. With some wise words about the wilderness too 🙏
Just spent a few days at Disney World and Universal Studios with the kids… 😯 quiet by the lake beats fun from a firehose any day 😂
It sure slept me well.
Nice hammock I will keep a look out for the XXXL version
That could be a XXXWait!
Also that there looks to be a chanterelle but is past it’s goodness, if it smells like apricots I’d be 90% sure! Looks like such a great trip
I keep getting a lot of different feedback on it. But I just enjoy looking at them. I got food in my pack to eat....
I am a good judge of people and those two are good people, they would be cool to hike and camp with.
They were. Good people
I’m sticking with my XLC Blackbird but that hammock looked like a super king sized bed in the penthouse at some swank, “SWANK” Los Vegas Casino Hotel. Good video. 👍🏕🇨🇱
Nice to have options.....
I was just thinking about you Saturday. I took my friend out for his first hammock camp. It was just a little overnighter here in northwest Missouri. He has been converted he is already asking to go again. You played a part I used your videos to convince him to go.
Whooooooo Buddy))))))
You got the Haven XL! im excited to watch!
It it nice. Has it's place in my collection.
@@shugemery i was looking at it in the spring but Derek told me to wait till fall :-) Whats the condensation like and also how warm is it with the inflatable pad?
@@youtube7076 Pad is an R-Value of 4 so around freezing or just below depending on you. I've had no condensation so far.
@@shugemery can you do a quick video using it with an underquilt or a second pad, if its at all even possible to fit either one?.. im over on the other side of the lakes and it gets really cold winter camping.
Just did some harmonizing on ain’t no sunshine with you shug, digging the acoustic whoo buddy!!!!!😎
Yeah Feller~~!
I was out there at the same time, stayed at the second site on the east side of the loop, the one right before whiskey jack. I was gonna belt out the loudest woooo buddy I could muster but decided I shouldn't shatter the ambiance for the other hikers but now I regret it haha pretty sure you would have heard it. Thanks for all the videos man it's been a huge help in lots of ways!
The site up on the hill looking down at the site across the lake? Voyeur site!
Beautiful, just lovely! Thank you so much
Whoooooo budddddyyyy)))))))))
Whoooooo Buddy)))) backatcha
