  • Apple tree cross pollination. Are your blooms open at the same time? In this video I show 12 different apple trees about to bloom. I talk about which varieties are furthest along and which varieties are furthest behind. Apple trees are not self pollinating which means they are sterile to their own pollen .Most apple trees need cross pollination from another variety. There are some varieties like Gala and Fuji that claim to be partial self pollinating but I have learned that you get very few apples when not crossed with another variety. This is why its so important to have trees that bloom at the same time. There are 5 different flowering groups for apples 1-5. One being the earliest to bloom and 5 being the last to bloom. Do not expect apples more then 2 bloom groups apart to flower at the same time. For an example in this video I show a Macintosh which is in group 2 and a Red Delicious in group 4. Their blooms are very far apart in development. Its mid April here ‪@UncleClaysOrchard‬ zone 7a southeastern Pennsylvania and all the apples are starting to bloom. The Pink Lady, Gold Rush and Macintosh are the furthest along. The Fuji, Winesap, Arkansas Black are furthest behind. Then in the middle of the pack we have Granny Smith, Gala, Yellow Delicious, Honey crisp, Crimson Crisp. #fruit #garden #gardening #apples #appletrees #orchard #fruittrees #flowers

    Beautiful set up Unc!! Love how all your trees are protected, where it needs it you got them staked, they are all properly pruned, properly braced. Very nice!!

    This brings back memories of going from tree to tree at LNC trying different apples. I'm not certain but I believe my favorite was the golden delicious. It was definitely a bright yellow apple with a very crunchy sweet bite and soft outer skin!

    Wow. You're on a roll! Great job!
    By the way, are you at a publicly accessible commercial orchard?

    Nice video! Fan of your channel! Have a Golden Delicious and a Honey Crisp both semi dwarf on the way. Both seem to flower at the same time from your video. How far away do you think they can be planted in order to get adequate cross pollination? I'm thinking about planting one in my backyard and one in my front yard. ~50Ft apart. Have you ever used Kaolin Clay to protect the fruit?

      50ft apart is fine, it would be honestly be better if they were next to each other but front yard back yard should be fine. I havnt becuase i heard it washes off in the rain. And where i live it rains so much! like 2-3 times a week in the spring time. Which means i would need to spray atleast twice a week. Which for me is time consuming because of the amount of trees.

    I noticed that this spring. My red haven peach tree is full of blossoms but i haven't seen not 1 pollinator on it. Actually i took a tiny brush and went around it myself trying to pollinate it as much as i can.

      luckily it blooms for a pretty
      long time, one of these warm sunny days you will see it covered in pollinators

    Im in 7B. Massachusetts. My Gala & Braeburn are first. My Honrycrisp & red McIntosh are 2nd with Fuji. None of my apple trees have open flowers yet. Just starting to now.

      @UncleClaysOrchard I feel Braeburn is the easiest to grow but my favorite so far is the Honeycrisp.

    Hi Clay, how far apart are your trees? Maybe just the angle but seem close. I’m new at this. Want to keep my trees small.

      All depends if your buying dwarf, semi dwarf or full size trees. Dwarf trees you can plant very close together

    Can't bloom time be controlled/induced by things such as watering and pruning schedules?

    • @UncleClaysOrchard
      @UncleClaysOrchard  24 дні тому

      maybe induced but not delayed…. you want the trees to bloom as late as possible

      oh i just noticed what video this comment is under. The trees would ideally all be pruned already in the winter weeks in advance. And it rains so much in the spring time i’m not sure how more water would change anything
