No Bees, No Problem - How To Improve Pollination In Fruit Trees

- Hand pollination with duster can improve fruit set, if pollinating insects are deterred by cold weather, for example. Note - colors of this duster are accidental, had it for about 10 years, and the Dollar stores around me didn't have similar, lightweight dusters like this one, so I used it for my video. @backyardfigs
I bribe the neighborhood bees with sugar syrup in the spring. Once they get their pheromones on the dish, I move it around the yard and refill with more syrup to draw them in where I want them.
Bee bribe cheating 🐝. Awesome. I will try next year with dissolved honey. Thanks for the tip.
Nice!
I planted 30 fruit trees, mostly apples four years back and some are starting to flower now. Just realized the flower stalks are all dropping off like last year, so no fruit set! We do have plenty of bees when it warms up, but we live in a cold valley with regular late spring frost with little bee activity when it's cold. Next year I will be doing this. Traditionally, a rabbit's tail was used!
Rabbit's tail, ha, learning something new every day. I had this duster for over 10 years, and it did help me increase production on many years like this current one. We were lucky that two frosts after duster pollination were not too severe. Video on apple fruit set is coming, it was so successful, now thinning is needed. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I can see by the way you have your trees pruned that you are a pro grower
Thank you, I really appreciate your comments.
This might be a really silly and ignorant question but, can you buy pollen and spread it with this method? I’m just curious 😅
Not a silly question. Pollen is available for apple breeding on smaller scale (when crossing two different varieties). I am actually doing some crosses this season, video will be posted soon. For the whole tree polination, this is faster and easier method.
@@backyardfigs thanks for answering. Where can I buy it? I want to experiment with fruit trees in containers. I would love to get a crabapple tree.❤️
I'm in 6b in New Jersey my peaches pollinated a month ago and my apples pollinated 2 weeks ago.
Nice, you must be close to 7a. Do you have any fig trees in the ground?
@Backyard Figs I did a couple years ago, but all are potted now. I erected a greenhouse (8'x16') a couple weeks ago. So, I won't put them in the garage this year.
@@Ottomus1 Sounds good
