It's certainly would not be good if Sony failed to meet expectations when it came to console sales but they do have other lines of business to fall back on such as cameras. Nintendo does not. I've for a long time been a Nintendo+PC gamer, and what I've always observed is that this gives you the best access to titles, as virtually all of the good games are either exclusive to Nintendo, exclusive to PC, or will wind up eventually coming out on PC anyway, whether a direct port, a later rerelease, or the like. And for anything that doesn't, well, there's always the forbidden art of emulation.
So far I've been right, and I haven't regretted my decisions made in this vein. Because this 'evergreen' state has always been a thing for Nintendo, and IIRC some of the most rare, sought-after, and expensive retro titles on the secondhand market are from old Nintendo consoles. Like Earthbound for example.
However, I think there's proof that Nintendo at least considered it, in the case this didn't wind up being the case, come the era of the Switch. Which is understandable as they were still reeling from the market failure of the Wii U. Notice how easy it is to use the joycons -- or moreover, a Switch Pro controller -- on your PC? It was designed to be directly compatible with PC hardware out of the box as a standard Bluetooth controller, or wired through USB-C in the case of the pro controller. [EDIT: The following statement was in error -- I didn't realize I had third-party pro controllers] Hell, your PC will even recognize its pressure sensitive bumpers as an analog axis. I think they had a backup plan in mind, that if the Switch failed on them, they could pivot a lot of their stuff to the PC market, and making the controllers able to link up to the PC would let them still potentially sell the peripherals to PC gamers wanting to tap into such Nintendo titles. And with this, all they'd need to do is put out a driver or game-end code that would let the games make use of the controllers' gyro features. But that functionality remains locked (without advanced work) to my knowledge simply because Nintendo hasn't needed to employ this contingency plan.
I'd say it's not even a longshot that they took a note from Microsoft and how controllers for the Xbox line were able to become a very standard kind of PC controller that's about as plug and play as it gets.
It's shrewd and wise to have a backup plan. Credit is certainly due for this contingency thinking.

it is not the game quality or that Sony and MS games aren't as good, memorable or engaging. they developed a culture around their games and IP where the consumer knows these games won't ever go down in price (they will go up as a collection piece or memorabilia) and people grew to accept. MS and Sony's culture is that most of their games usually go down in price months after or end up on their services and people are patient enough to wait for that discount. Nintendo fans on the other hand are loyal and devoted consumers, they know these characters for a lifetime and will spend on these IPs day 1. for them and their families/friends. we all know that Super Mario party is laughably cut in content yet people still payed full for it even after horrifying reviews cause they know "Mario Party". everyone knows "Mario Party, Tennis, Kart, Golf, etc.."

The major differentiator here is that Nintendo’s games remain full price, but Nintendo continues to make new full price games of similar/better quality than previous releases, and said games don’t rely on microtransactions.
Meanwhile, Rockstar’s GTA 5 remains one of the largest video games ever produced. But they’ve rode on that one entry for 8 years, and have only made one other game since then. Instead of a GTA 6, GTA 5 is continuously receiving pieces of new content because of GTA Online and its microtransaction-flooded experience. And what sucks about that is that GTA Online is required to experience all post-release content, while GTA IV received 2 full story expansions that could be experienced in single-player in the 5 years between GTA IV and GTA V’s release. GTA Online, even if not too much of a paywall to access new content, is too much of a multiplayer timesink just to experience the new content
I prefer Nintendo’s way, as I can enjoy Super Mario Odyssey, then move on to Animal Crossing New Horizons, then move on to Metroid Dread, and soon move on to Kirby and the Forgotten Land; and all the while, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is my evergreen game I can enjoy in between each Nintendo game

@@kaptinbarfbeerd1317 I’ll admit that it was hyperbolic of me to say “the end of consoles”, no technology ever really stops getting use if it’s convenient enough to pop in a disc and play. What I should have said is that we could be at the end of the era where there are new consoles every gaming generation.
We’ve reached the point where hardware improvements in consoles have received severely diminishing returns; the Switch is the only modern console that has room for major hardware improvements, but it’s a crapshoot as to whether Nintendo will actually do it. These consoles will probably be supported for decades, and will perhaps have the longest lives in console history, but afterwards I don’t see any value for customers to buy another console. The last method of innovation for console gaming seems to be branching out to PC gaming, as games ported to PC have the added benefit of plasticity, from being able to edit the settings for high-end graphical effects not possible on a console to being able to use reshade or even mod the game. In summary, it’s not that we’re entering an era where consoles will used less, it’s more like we’re entering where PCs will be used more than they were previously.

@@johnclark926 I guess we'll see if future technology developments extend the lifecycle of current gen consoles. However, hardware developments have also slowed in regards to PC gaming too. PC hardware has always been superior to console but that never affected console sales then and I doubt it will in the future.
As idiotic as the console vs PC debate is, one advantage consoles have always had over PC is ease of use. As much as PC elitists hate it, there are always going to be people who value streamlined convenience over the options of PC gaming. There are also many gamers who play on both PC and console even double dipping on certain games even when piracy and emulation are options available to them.
Keep in mind, Nintendo has never cared about having the latest hardware for their consoles. Look at the original Game Boy, it had weaker hardware yet still beat out the competition because each Game Boy unit was cheaper, cheaper to operate (4 AA batteries for 16 hours as opposed the Sega Game Gear/ Atari Lynx 6 AA batteries for 4 hours), was very durable (no fragile back lit screen) and had a massive game library. Regarding them wanting to tightly couple the software with the hardware, honestly, their hardware tends to be rather underwhelming most of the times, and the console itself is just like any other unless it's also a gaming tablet (which isn't needed to actually play). Their _controllers_ on the other hand tend to be very unique and interesting, and it's the _controllers_ that the games are tightly coupled with. Where does this leave us? Well, _every single Nintendo controller since the Gamecube is usable on PC_ with the possible exception of the Wii U Gamepad, which could also be main to work. If Nintendo had a game like 1-2 Switch that absolutely depends on the Joy-Cons, it would still be playable on PC since you can directly connect the Joy-Con to your PC and use them exactly as you would on the Switch itself as long as you had a charging dock for them. Regarding Nintendo's desire for control, well... it's next to impossible to fully control the PC since there's so much freedom available, but they can't fully lockdown their own systems given the prevalence of homebrew. Aside from that, there's nothing saying they have to publish on a mainstream market like Steam. They could still keep their own E-shop which would become its own desktop application and be the only place to buy Nintendo games on PC. So it's actually very possible for Nintendo to release their games on PC without losing that much. Does this mean that they'll actually do so? No, and they probably still won't, but it's interesting to note if you ask me.

And without being in the gaming industry, I think that's where the biggest money is made.
I assume that for a launch title about 50% is what the game actually costs in development, 20% is what the developer actually earns in profit and 30% is what the publisher gets.
Which is why after the game has launched, they can afford to discount the game below 50%, because they already made the money.
So not enough is a bit of a weird statement here, in my opinion. It was enough, but they know they can milk it for more profit.

Nintendo was never dominant here like it is in the US or Japan. I know very, very few people who own a Switch and PlayStation completely dominates gaming here. As an european, if you didn't know things were different elsewhere, you'd be forgiven for thinking Switch games just don't sell.
Also, Nintendo games keep selling not because they're better than the competition. Some are, some aren't. They sell because Nintendo fans already know the price won't ever come down so they just buy the game whenever. Sony and Microsoft *will* mark down their games, just like everyone else does, so if people are not happy with the price, they wait. Nintendo managed to operate in a different way and they totally capitalise on this idea to keep selling 5 year old games at full price. Perception is everything.

What this translates to is "Nintendo fans won't buy our consoles if our exclusives are also on PC." And what that tells me is that Nintendo is scared it might go the way of Sega if they released their games on PC. If they lose their first party titles, they lose the biggest pillar keeping them up as a 1st party publisher and games console manufacturer (because unlike Microsoft, they can't just buy out new IPs on a regular basis, they're not anywhere near as big as Microsoft).
Nintendo knows their consoles are basically a decade behind in terms of performance (to the point where the Steam Deck is set to blow them out of the water and usher in a new era of Linux gaming), and the only things they can really rely on are their 1st parties. On top of this, a LOT of their first-party games are geared towards everyone, but mostly children. Sony and Microsoft are often geared towards being "adult gaming consoles" so to speak, whereas Nintendo has marketed themselves as being the kid-friendly company (even though they're honestly just as slimy as Microsoft or Sony, if not more so).
These two factors, i think, are probably the biggest reason as to why people haven't given up on Nintendo entirely, because they have a lock on a specific market that Sony and Microsoft just haven't managed to really compete with. And when they try to, they often get ridiculed by their base demographic because a lot of people in fandoms are elitist gatekeeping assholes.

Oh you're beyond right. I've noticed that too over the years but, you know, how *dare* you try to point that out! ;P
Seriously though, I don't think it's because Sony makes games that are worse. I just think that that Sony games just aren't "Evergreen" like Nintendo's are so, they just age differently.
Sony goes for plot. They want to create an experience and, they're good at it- do not get me wrong. But... the result is that game play just isn't as fun as a result. It's serviceable-- meaning that it doesn't outright *suck* or anything but, it's really just a means to an end because for Sony that end is the story.
Nintendo goes at it from *literally* the opposite side of the spectrum: for them, "plot" (when there even *is* one) is just an excuse to pick up the controller. It's the game play that's the star of the show for them. Everything else is secondary.
So. You're getting two different types of games that age two completely different ways.
With Sony, once you've seen the story, unless you're seriously a fan of that particular universe... there's just not much incentive to go back. So, yeah. Of *course* the price is going to go down as time and players move on.
It's a Summer Blockbuster philosophy which can indeed earn billions in that first week but, you're paying off on longevity because that summer blockbuster may sell out everywhere during that summer but otoh, it's going to inevitably get replaced by the next blockbuster to come along.
Nintendo games otoh may have boring "plot" but, the game play is *always* enjoyable on the bet that, if it's always enjoyable, then it's always going to be worth going back to. They're not looking to sell out at the box office, they're looking to make that movie that every fan of that genera will buy and keep a copy of on their shelf and pull out and rave over for the next 20-30 years.
It's a Cult Classic philosophy which may not sell out theaters on release night but, otoh, it's fan base (and paying audience members) are only going to grow over time. You're foregoing that #1 Ticket sales that first week or month on the bet that you're going to see more of a return as the years go on than you would trying to duke it out at the box office for a week at #1.
      Does either philosophy suck?
      No.
      Is either philosophy wrong?
      Not even close.
Are there pros and cons to each of them?
      You betcha.
Either way though, yeah, I honestly think that that's the difference between Sony and Nintendo that I've noticed over the years and why their games act the way that they do when it comes to sales prices and sales numbers. Blockbuster vs Cult Classic. You *have* to go for one or the other because you can't go for both. And, somehow or another, they both wound up on opposite sides of that spectrum and have been on those opposing sides for... well, about as long as I can remember tbh.
*Both* fans *haaaaaate* it when you point that out though but, that's still what I've noticed. LOL.

A big reason they don't port to PC mainly because they are staunchly against piracy and the PC platform is the easiest way to pirate games. It's the reason why they stuck with the cartridge format for the N64 (yes you there were cartridge copying devices but they were expensive and not readily available) and the reason why they used the proprietary DOL-006
    Gamecube game disk.

Without even watching the video, Nintendo systems since the N64 have always infamously been underpowered/were less than ideal for game development compared to the competing systems (N64 cartridges vs Sega Saturn/PS1 CDs, GameCube mini discs vs Sega DC/Xbox/PS2 DVDs, Wii, Wii U, & switch being underpowered compared to the competing Xbox 360 - series x|s and ps3 - 5). If not for their first party games and exclusives, their systems would not sell NEARLY as well as they do, hence the main reason u can't play Mario, Zelda, Pokemon on other systems officially (i.e. why they don't go 3rd party).

Stupid idea for those 2 companies. Lol Nintendo don't want to ruin exclusively. The point of exclusive games is to be on 1 single platform only. Porting them to PC just ruins the exclusive thing
