As a youth coach... when I notice the other team has a very strong driver... I get my defender to shut down his right side and open up the left side drive. 8/10 times, the best drives have weak left sided drives and are easier to strip or will likely dish it away. Same goes for taking a charge... a lot of players are heads-down bull drivers... get to the lane early and take the charge and shut it down.
Is it possible to consistently steal the ball from an offensive scorer right as he is driving? And really tip the ball off his hands instead of just trying to make him miss his shot? Or is that not realistically possible?
Defense is mental as well. I like getting in the head of the offense especially if they are my close homies. As long as I’m blocking their shots, getting steals, making them over dribble I talk shit and get in their head 😂
as an asian player with average height of 5’8” what i usually do is hard defense. never let them drive comfortably, never let them shoot comfortably, never let them rebound comfortably. Mess up your opponents mind dont let them get comfortable being around defender like me.
Mixed here and also 5,8 freshman. I have a long wingspan so I get easy tips. If you have short arms stay in reach but don't be to close. My brother has shorter arms than me but he is stronger so he is physical but he is fast so he basically whips me sometimes. But footwork and movement is your best friend. Look at how they dribble and find out there favorite moves. Then look at there hips and eyes and then predict there next move. Tbh I rather not foul but if it's to prevent a basket in a close game foul. I'm not the best defender in the world but incredible defense is supposed to prevent buckets
I remember in high school, I was a good defender and thought that would never change...went to JUCO College and it turns out, the people I was guarding in high school especially as a senior, were just not good at basketball and did predictable stuff like dribbling too much and what not...Im in JUCO and its people that are just as fast as me, I was actually really fast in high school as well like faster than A LOT of people lol...but when i got to college holy shit it REALLY felt like I was the worst defender...I got tired so easily it was unbelievable I never been so tired before...im still trying to improve on defense til this day and my coach makes us slide as well and he makes us do this 1v1 close out drill and we cant let them get in the lane or to the middle which is hard like that sliding stuff made me so vulnerable to fakes and now its even harder to react to jabs and stuff...so now i just look at their chest now, my teammate also told me about angles and stuff
@@christophercharles6671 its a certain you have to guard someone depending on where the ball is at like of they are dribbling to the right u sort of look like you are forcing then that way while also protecting the paint by cutting them off
The see ball and man technique is great. It made me think about how I play defense during pick up games. A lot of times, once my man is out of my sight, he becomes out of mind until he scores a basket. I will start applying this immediately.
Let’s clarify, sliding for practice is still insanely important, it helps with explosiveness out of your step. And if you are good enough and predictive, you can cut them off and potentially draw a charge. Being able to turn the legs and take strides is also important, but side jumps/slides are still important to develop skills
As someone who is a liability in defense because i can't dribble i want to focus on my defensive end so my offensive liability wouldn't be that much due to what i bring to defense thanks for these tips
Dude today, I had quick-paced matches in school. I had about 10 to 15 matches each 5 - 10 mins and I only won once. I thought the opponents defence was just to good to pass. But now I realised, find those gaps then move them further away from the goal then score. I only did this once. But I didn't even use that as an advantage so now I will use these new strategies and win.
Also, if you're guarding the ball against a player who can dribble, shoot, finish, and pass, if you can find a way to also be aware of the other 8 players on the court, that's a plus. Good players know how to attack the gaps in the defense, so if you keep your player away from the gaps and in the vicinity of other players, build a wall around him using the out of bounds, position of other players, and even more helpful if you know his favorite spots to keep him out of. This is how great defenses keep the James Hardens, the Damien Lillards, the Paul George's in check. No player is unstoppable
@@walterwhite4969 do you know the phrase “all is fair in love and war”? Well I would like to add basketball to that list. Try and think outside of the box when guarding players that have a certain power over you. Utilize your environment, your teammates, don’t let him get to his spot. Use your speed to get around him and steal the ball. Pull the chair on him. Make him shoot a left handed layup because you know he never makes those. Foul him, even better if you can foul him without getting a call. You never lose until you say there’s nothing you can do about it
@@walterwhite4969 you could probably think of something better than what I listed. What separates a great defender from an average defender is that a great defender knows their limitations and is willing to play outside of the rules

Can you make a video about how far away the ball should be from your body when bringing it up from the shot pocket? I keep hitting myself in the head when I bring the ball up ready to shoot
When I play in an unfamillar gym this is what I do I give my man space to take the shot when he first recieves the ball. Most of the time what he'll do is: 1. Confidently takes the shot. Stick to these guys cause they'll keep shooting the ball when open. Most of the time these guys can't drive by good defense 2. Looks for an open man to pass. If there are none he'll either take the shot or create a play. This guys are hard to guard cause you don't know if they can shoot or only drive until later in game so you can't shut them down early. 3. Immediatley tries to drive by you. You don't need to worry if you leave this guys open far from the basket since they won't be draining thier shots just keep them away from the basket and you're good.
I was guarding my friend and for the record I don’t play and have never played basketball, but I have really good agility and I’m not afraid to pressure my opponent when I play with friends. I got really tired but he wasn’t so while guarding, my body literally just gave out and my feet just dropped in place while I was trying to get to him
Btw if u are a bigger player on defence, keep sliding and don’t do the run and cut off thing, because as soon as a player sees you change directions, they will probably do a snatch back and have either, an open shot or your ankles break from the fast direction change
You don’t slide your feet standing up high, your supposed to get lower then the person with the ball. You’re supposed direct the offensive player where you want them to go.
Suggestion on future video: tons of shooting videos on UA-cam, but can make a shooting video focused on the shooting hand wrist? (how far back the wrist should be at the start of the shot, and how hard you are flicking your wrist, and then the wrist position after the shot). Thanks!

Bro that first tip will get you crossed, the moment I see I get my opponent’s hips to turn and run with me I step back and take ankles. That’s lowkey bad advice, let’s be honest if you’re a skilled offensive player who has a quick first step you’re unguardable. It’s all a guessing game really. You attack their foot and it’s over. The second tip is ehh I purposely sell my move with the ball throwing it out to make them think I’m going that way or to get them to reach and then counter that. The third is legit the only way to guard somebody, bc on pickup it i rek. My brother the only one who can barely guard me.
JChaos Gaming you will get got from time to time, but better than giving up a wide open lane for a layup 👍🏼 But you’re right, a good offensive player will realize this... But most players aren’t that good haha.

People now do not understand, you have to use your peripheral vision too. See your man, see the ball. Don't focus on your man, focus on the center(between your man and the ball). If your man moves, you beat him to the spot to disrupt him from whatever he's planning. That's just defense 101 off ball. 1 on 1, you try to explore your man to find his weakness, is he explosive to his right side or left side, close that door or you can make him think he can dribble on his right then beat him to position, make him dribble to his left, you can easily... Eaaaaasily steal that ball once you clip that right arm. If you're going to face a youtuber/wannabe and1, use the jordan defense, 1 hand free movement, 1 hand between the legs. Clipping them pisses them off alot, like seriously they would throw that ball to your head but make sure you if it's your turn, baseball pitch it to his face right after he does it. 😂😂😂

There's this tall guy that I really want to block but can't. Then I noticed that he always hold the ball low when he's driving to the bucket. So Instead of trying to block him from above, I'll just smack the ball from his hands before he can bring it up
if youre too active you need even more calories because especially running based sports burn a lot of calories thus making you unable to gain weight so EAT even more
See ball and man a all times. This type of basketball IQ also works on staying in front of the ball handler. I use to play for Earl Barrier back in the early 90's and he would run the shit out of us if he saw on film that we could have taken the ball away off the dribble
My defense used to be really smart and good but no one noticed and now a year later you have to defend like the coach told you and you need to be fast for that tactic so I'm basically doomed

For the turn run and cut off what about if they step back or do a behind the back like I’m fast enough to get to the cut off but I seem to run into people who counter
Stay on ya toes. After you stop most ppl a few times they won’t keep attacking you
As a learner can you show me some basic guide on how to defence and dribble?
thank you for the info

Anyone got any tips for a left handed shooter? Ik a little bit ab basketball but I'm not that deep into it yet
thx coach ❗️ love your videos ima really good player because of you
When I played youth basketball, my team had the 2 best shooters in the area. So with that, I had to do all the defensive work just to earn my minutes.
So I’m looking for a video that teach you how to keep the ball away the other person because I have basketball practice at November 1
Can you make a donovan mitchell video
Thank u!!
Nice job
Follow the Basketball and the man, when your player is too fast, dont slide, turn around, run, and cut them off.
Defensive IQ
Scout. Realize the tendencies and habits that other players have, use that knowledge to make them predictable.
So helpful
Turn, then the offensive player steps back. Boom!
thanks coach
His tips go me crossed

We do see man ball I suck and I need to get better
There's this tall guy that I really want to block but can't. Then I noticed that he always hold the ball low when he's driving to the bucket. So Instead of trying to block him from above, I'll just smack the ball from his hands before he can bring it up
When I heard “turn”, Flight the Goat came to my mind
I want to improve my basketball defense and offense
I’m 14 and I’m 6’1 145lbs how long until you think i gain some wieght I eat, workout, play football baseball basketball everyday
if youre too active you need even more calories because especially running based sports burn a lot of calories thus making you unable to gain weight so EAT even more
See ball and man a all times. This type of basketball IQ also works on staying in front of the ball handler. I use to play for Earl Barrier back in the early 90's and he would run the shit out of us if he saw on film that we could have taken the ball away off the dribble
5”5, 5”11 Wingspan
My defense used to be really smart and good but no one noticed and now a year later you have to defend like the coach told you and you need to be fast for that tactic so I'm basically doomed
1:16 simple crossover ur getting put put on that highlight reel
FIRST!!
He’s asking for broken ankles with that turn and run stuff
Real but what he means is like not like actually run just like cut them off so basically if the blow passed you in like the high post you can jog/ run and cut them off so you don’t get the foul if you don’t have help
