I think what I love about BN5 is how the "tanky bois" for both versions (Magnet Man and Knightman) were not only former adversaries, but, get to stand out as some of the *BEST* navis in this game. Magnet Man hits like a bus, while Knightman is, unironically, the clutch clear king. It's both tragic, and totally understandable why we can't have BOTH of them on the same team. But it was also really nice to give these villains from BN 2 (a game I know a LOT of people skipped) some love.
True. I like Princess Pride's redemption arc in Team Colonel and change of her personality from a sassy European monarch to a "servant of her people" type of leader.

Double Team DS being a "compilation" game was such a massive misoppurtunity its unreal. Star Force 2 isn't that bad. It's not GREAT, but it's not Battle Network 4 bad. It's a middle-ground title at worst. For as much bad as there is, it's balanced out by a fair amount of good.
Given that the GBA and DS translations of BN5 are different, it's possible that particular mistranslation was only in the version he didn't play. I've forgotten myself... it's been a while.
I played Team Protoman back in the day, and I'm pretty sure I remember the Houdini of the Beach scene having extra lines explaining it. They go into detail about how the technique will stretch fabric to its limit and likely cause a rip while staying in overly-dramatic character the whole time. Every line was also weirdly specific about exactly how it happens. It was at least 50% more awkward and no, I also will not Google it to check if I am remembering it correctly.

The amount of work put into this series is amazing! Battle Network was a series I loved as a kid, although I struggled through most of them because I had no idea program advances were a thing. I really hope Capcom does something with the series in future!
I’m gonna save all my thoughts about BN5 for part 2 but while i’m here, I really have to say, i know why this video took so long to make now. The editing here is so slick man! So many cool moments here, it’s super impressive to see! Really nice work with the video man!

Ah, Mega Man Battle Network 5: the game where characters learn how to emote with their faces (outside of Megaman’s emotion window) and actually talk with voices. If only they kept that with Battle Network 6. Seriously, why didn’t 6 get a DS rerelease?!

Really enjoyed the video John! MMBN5 DS is my favorite in the series, even moreso than the third game. Very excited to see your thoughts on the endgame in part two. ^^ Take care of yourself buddy! PS: That ShadowMan 'walking on air' joke damn nearly killed me. Brilliant.

This game's soundtrack is godlike and I love how connecting other BN cartridges allowed the in game battle music to matchup with whatever version of the game that was used
19:19 I’m not 100% certain if the misspelling of “mission” was intentional or unintentional. But if the former case is true, I can’t help but feel the goal was to follow the theme of occasional typos appearing throughout the Battle Network games. Especially with just coming off of BN4, which might as well have been the “Mega Man X6” (to an extent) of the Battle Network Series, in terms of its prevalence of spelling and grammatical errors.
Oh One thing about colonels first fight. He actually can use his troop attack, but he's coded not to summon cubes to use it. If you place some, he'll take advantage and use those.
Been waiting for this. The way you pushed yourself through the painful BN4, and some sidegames recently. BN5 is one of my favorites, i know it so well. And the DS version was quite clever the way it utilised the GBA slot. Butttttt....they made me replay the game ive already replayed multiple times. You can really see how there were elements of BN4 that had some potential but fell flat on multiple occasions. BN5 really iterated on these ideas. I loved the use of Souls/Actual controlling the navis in the liberation missions. Gave me pokemon vibes! I did like the idea of building whole folders around particular souls which i thought didn't work out too well on BN4. The further plot of the darkchips and darksouls was great. The part with where you temporarily obtain Protoman was a nice sidepart too. The story is simultaneously ....awful/simple plottwists with over expositions / conveneniences..... whilst also having some plot twists that blew my mind, made so much sense...and some dark /messed up moments....and also some heartfelt ones.
The DS voice acting clips every few minutes kept me on the edge of my seat. I know 'cringe' is a very overused term but it had me physically wincing in my chair. True, non-hyperbolic cringe. Beautiful.
@SuperSentaiFanBoy there are some good soundtracks for the ds version of mmbn 5, but most of the songs use samples of the original GBA which distorts when reuploaded so the sound quality lowers
I love that I just happened to remember about battle network and decided to play it on my phone, and this video was actually recently released. Most other battle network videos are like 7-10 years old
If you liked the Houdini of the beach thing, get ready for it's return in about 5-10 years time. Also I'm super happy that the joke made with the door blocking your path in acdc area was made, but I'm kinda bummed out that the chat wasn't shown for that.......(because I was there)
Both Bass and Sol cross are available on GBA. Bass cross is obtained through e-reader, and Sol cross is obtained by linking with another gba with Boktai.
I actually loved the MMBN GBA music. Capcom did some major witchcraft to make it sound _so good_ even with the GBA's chiptune restrictions. I love the GBA versions' music even more than the DS version.
You’re like one of my favorite creators on this hellscape now because of your videos. I crack the hell up each time. I was disappointed though that you didn’t make a Chris Redfield Boulder.wav joke when Mega Man punched the rocks lmao.
Continuity in Battle Network?! As to continue a running joke from a certain stream "We remembered it Lan Hikari!" Also surprised the reused content bin is still able to work after BN4 new game + (minus tallying the proper number after that)
Yes been waiting for this series for so long! Loved the first part, looking forward to the next. Glad it’s we you playing PM on stream, I’ll hop on by for sure.
35:14 "Lan gets a message form Dex that they're alright". Wait. At the start of the game with mom's recipe we learned that messages have to be delivered by hand by a navi. How did Dex send this message?
So for any UA-cam viewers who didn't show up to the streams, John got 1-turns, EVERY TIME he used Order Points, or atleast nearly every time. Also it wasn't just Baryl who told him about the image data, every half hour or something, Chat would scream at John to remember the navis behind him were just shells.
Great Video, as always. When it comes to the GBA's sound chip, it seems to have a bad reputation. I can see how it really could get on people's nerves, and I am completely aware of the fact that nostalgia mostly clouds my judgement, but I loved it. I would like to offer a reason why the GBA's sound chip actually fit BN. I agree it didn't work for most things, but it worked for BN. The music created for the BN games through the GBA's sound chip sounds (at least, to me) like it has this "computery" theme. This kind of soundtrack actually fits the theme of BN: It's about computers. Like, rudimentary computer technology that might still have those kinds of beeps and screeches. These games WERE made at a time when computing technology wasn't so refined like it is now. On the contrary, Double Team's remixed soundtrack sounded a little too "fine," like all the wrinkles that fit the series had been removed.
Another great video! The only thing I noticed you didn't mention is the ability to switch to the other game's navis during liberation missions. You can only change one per liberation mission, but it really helps out a ton when playing Team Protoman to get access to Knightman (since Magnetman's charge shot and special chip both suck)
You bastard how dare you use the to be continued thing from Jojo in an actual good way! You got me way too excited for this especially since you're talking about the DS version rather than the GBA version that every single person always brings up. Definitely going to enjoy part 2!
Heck yeah, BN5 is a classic to me, and Be Somewhere (from the Stream season of the anime and the Japanese version of Double Team intro) is such a nostalgic song. I love the squad aspect of TP/TC and at this point Lan's friends are a liability and cannot be separated anyways so it's welcome. Not sure if they changed some things, but the drill comp is even harder in the DS version for some reason. Also your voice reminds me of a certain Yakuza reviewer, which is nice to listen to while multitasking.
Looking forward to the next 2 parts of this review... I imagine it is near hell on earth for the amount of time necessary to properly analyze this game... I suppose 6 as mentioned in the video is the scorched and freezing portions of hell. Hmm. I am curious if you'll do Command Mission as well at some point as I await the uploads on the LP/edited streams channel. Your editing and timing of jokes have gotten significantly better. Nearly choked on my drink laughing at the Shadowman bit surfing on the clouds.
This video was recommended to me so this was my first view for your Channel but I love your review and knowledge of battle network in general! Instant subscribe!
Team Protoman was the first BN game I have ever played. The only reason I got it because it was in a bargain bin at a costco and it was the best looking gba game in there. But I have enjoyed the BN and SF series since then. Watching your other videos have been a nostalgic trip. Thanks man.

"a whole society relying on a semi-literate 11 year old and his haunted Motorola razer deserves to collapse"
Had me dying to how accurate that is. I'm so glad I found your vids, John. So many "good" memories of these games
So hyped that you announced you'll be covering Star Force!! MMBN5 is my favorite in the series since liberation missions were so new and fun for me, excited for your next part of this review! Thanks again for everything you do for our MegaMan community
Double Team DS being a "compilation" game was such a massive misoppurtunity its unreal. I mean imagine how cool would it be if we could chose which team members to add to the team and be a leader of a custom one. For example we could chose Colonel as a leader but all the team members would be from Team Protoman.
if you use transport chips you can swap a member for the opposite game's member during the liberation missions.
It would be amazing if it let us have all 12 Soul Unisons or at least let us decide which 6 do we want. I am with Team Colonel but I would gladly trade Shadow, Number, and Colonel ones away
@@Zmeeed01only problem I see with that is that you can put number and search soul in the same list. The games never allow for more than one cust buffing soul to exist in one version
I actually prefer some of the GBA tracks to the DS version.
The battle themes specifically have a different vibe to them
Same, though to be fair, that's probably the nostalgia hitting us.
@@orangegalen Not everything should be considered a nostalgia bias. I agree with you. If anything I feel like disliking the GBA soundtrack is pretty rare and him thinking it's not good is fine but the fact that he is annoyed by it is weird to me but hey to each there own.
Really appreciate the extra editing that went into this. Specifically during the character introductions.
46:07 A trick some have found success with is using the game's pause function (the Select button) to pause mid-battle and confirm; if green, unpause with the button still held down; if purple, unpause without the button.
I kinda wanna see if Tony Sampson, the Voice actor for Dex, is on Cameo. We NEED a dramatic reading of Houdini of the Beach. Or an ASMR Reading. Either way, Houdini of the Beach needs to be properly memorialized.
There’s a fan reading of the scene. ua-cam.com/video/qhVoYRPfIGw/v-deo.html
I love how Magnetman uses a shield, while Knightman just blocks it with his THICC body.
Another fun fact about the battle system is that they changed a bug that was present in full synch in exe 4
The emotion counter when at full synch is 255 when doing a counter and normally attacking an enemy will bring it up from the base 120 and getting hit lowers it to eventual anxious or anger states
But for whatever reason in exe 4 the number wasn't capped so by spamming chips like air hockey you can get constant full synch without counters
In exe 5 it is now capped at 254 so only a counter can get you 255
That's strange. I thought that was an intended function due to how quickly people can get full-synchro in Bn4.
@@xanaguythelegend7770 Same. I thought it's the compensation for the fact that you're not using the absolutely bonkers DarkChips and the chips that need tainted karma and/or bugs in order to work
Can’t fucking wait for StarForce but thanks again KNIJohn for going through these Megaman games and bringing us back to a simpler time
The one redeeming quality of Team Protoman is a full explanation of Houdini of the Beach
wait, really?
Wait what?
I kinda wish we got team protoman and just went oh yeah colonel happened for Bn6
Even though team protoman not Cannon the version I have don't get me wrong team colonel alright when I first played Battle Network Network 6 who colonel?
@@foxdragon4261 yeah but it's a palette swap rival
@@JetblackJay everybody has a different point of view of the characters is a colonel cool character I prefer protoman it's just my opinion okay if you prefer Colonel more power to you everybody has a favorite character
Based and Proto-soul pilled
Meddy is the only reason to play team protoman
Did you just say you're going to review the starforce games as well? That's great! I love the starforce series but playing SF2 is something I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemies.
Still rather play SF2 then any version of BN4...but yeah, watching another UA-camr play through that game reminded me how...anti-fun it can be most times.
Star Force 2 isn't that bad. It's not GREAT, but it's not Battle Network 4 bad. It's a middle-ground title at worst. For as much bad as there is, it's balanced out by a fair amount of good.
SF2 being my first SF game, I loved it, going online and seeing it's hated universally is so weird
Makes me scared to replay it though
I wonder if he'll be playing just base SF1 or SFDX when the time comes
@@JusaWanderer BN4 is an Matt McMuscles wha happun? worthy video.
He completely overlooked Megaman screaming "It's phone!"
But then again, BN's localization is such a mess, you get used to it.
No, you're right. Also a GBA enjoyed, and how can I forget Houdini of the Beach?
I like that Yai portrait change where they were stuck in that room. Herr 5head is cute, didnt know it existed lol
26:42 John are you *sure* you get it? Just in case, I just wanted to remind you the navis are *shells* not the real navi, the real Colonel is with Lan's mo- I mean Baryl
Also, they are blessed with invulnerability against all harm, physical or magical.
really a shame the views have gone down. This is as impeccable as ever. thanks for reinvigorating this franchise for the common people. Maybe this will get people into the series. thanks again john !
these vids definitely get me through work
RIGHT WHEN I GET HOME FROM CLASS, THE PERFECT TIMING LETS GOOOOOOOOO
Same but replace class with work
Straight up made my night
SloGauge is a very useful Battlechip in Liberation Mission, because it gives more time to do a 1-turn liberation.
back as a kid, i thought slo gauge chip was stupid..little that i know it was useful in liberation mission
Bro I never thought about that still learning new things
I need to see the MMBN series remastered! This series was a huge part of my childhood.
25:48 I like that subtle Homestar Runner reference
The amount of work put into this series is amazing! Battle Network was a series I loved as a kid, although I struggled through most of them because I had no idea program advances were a thing. I really hope Capcom does something with the series in future!
Using that intro made the introduction cooler than it needed to be and you have my props for that.
41:10 Knight Man: "I'm not locked in here with you. You are locked in here with me!"
I’m gonna save all my thoughts about BN5 for part 2 but while i’m here, I really have to say, i know why this video took so long to make now. The editing here is so slick man! So many cool moments here, it’s super impressive to see! Really nice work with the video man!
34:49 can we just take a second and appreciate how badass colonel was while he was just using his cape to block the bullets like a absolute mad lad
Ahh yes, my ears autotuned the Knightman statements to "Knightman's thicc girth makes him the go-to guy for dark holes"
Not only did Cloudman make a Wamuu reference being a wind character but also saying things about divinity in regards to his attacks. Then you brought it home with the JJBA ending with Mega Man’s capture. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
So that's who CloudMan was reminding me of!
Ok dood, so far the best review yet. Best edits, best jokes, best pacing, continuity.
And your BN4 review was already pretty darn amazing.
Ah, Mega Man Battle Network 5: the game where characters learn how to emote with their faces (outside of Megaman’s emotion window) and actually talk with voices.
If only they kept that with Battle Network 6. Seriously, why didn’t 6 get a DS rerelease?!
Bad sales I think
@@Raderph And yet compared to the rest, 6 was not only the best of the series but a masterpiece of actual localization and writing that was less off the wall. If they hadn't shit the bed so hard with 4, 6 might have gotten the release it really should have on the DS.
Here's hoping for a legacy compilation where they make all the battle network games DS quality
Brilliant.
50:44 funny thing is Shadowman is wearing shoesfor the "Mizugumo No Jutsu" skill for walking on water (a ninja art is not that famous and based on weight and balance from what i can understand)
Didn't the mythbuster bust that theory
@@joshhallam6342 apperently is based on weight and there are photos of the skill in action.
I've played so much of these games and this series is still teaching me things.
You got my sub with your BN4 review, which made me go back and watch some of your other reviews as well, but hearing you plan to cover the Starforce games too? Good man you've got yourself a long-time viewer. :D
This game's soundtrack is godlike and I love how connecting other BN cartridges allowed the in game battle music to matchup with whatever version of the game that was used
19:19
I’m not 100% certain if the misspelling of “mission” was intentional or unintentional.
Beautiful.
As a kid literally made it unplayable because now lan and megaman sound completed different than the one in my head
Great job on these reviews man. Delivery is so solid I find myself watching these in one sitting sometimes
Can’t wait for you to cover Starforce
I VASTLY prefer the GBA ost. Im serious.
Truuuueee
@SuperSentaiFanBoy there are some good soundtracks for the ds version of mmbn 5, but most of the songs use samples of the original GBA which distorts when reuploaded so the sound quality lowers
Same
It’s good and loud. Much better version.
Gba sound is better but ds is good too 😊😊
52:35
I really like that. These things significantly increase the skill ceiling and Shadowman is a good navy even without it.
Lan: What am I doing here?
Lan is asking Life's most difficult question.
Haven't finished the video yet, but I watched all your streams of the game, so I know this is gonna be an amazing review as always!
Good thing I chose to stay up tonight! Excited for these next parts for BN5, my favorite of the series.
Played blue moon, protoman, then gregar and was so confused on the plot of part 6, thanks for the mix up being cleared out
Continuity in Battle Network?!
The soundtrack of the DS version is what an extremely over-compressed jpeg sounds like lol
Yes, I did repress that memory. Thanks for dredging it up!
The format of this video and yourself made me watch this whole thing. Keep it up bro. 💪🏽
35:14 "Lan gets a message form Dex that they're alright". Wait. At the start of the game with mom's recipe we learned that messages have to be delivered by hand by a navi. How did Dex send this message?
Then the mail function shouldn't exist unless navis can snoop in other people's PET
Best guess mr. prog.
So for any UA-cam viewers who didn't show up to the streams, John got 1-turns, EVERY TIME he used Order Points, or atleast nearly every time.
Also it wasn't just Baryl who told him about the image data, every half hour or something, Chat would scream at John to remember the navis behind him were just shells.
now now. it wasn't just Twitch chat. we also reminded him on Discord, and I reminded him on Twitter once.
@@krvys7226 It was mostly twitch chat though.

I really like this chapter as it shows an actual extended scene of Lan interacting with his friends.
I know the quality of gba music isn’t the best but it’s a favorite of mine with its synthy sounds and lofi kind of blend.
Welcome back, king. Something nice to wake up to and prepare dinner for.
Great video, literaly. Probably the best channel to cover these games. I know it's hard, but keep it up.
I remember crying playing this game i loved it so much.
Colonel: my job is done.
Everyone who played team protoman: but you barely did anything.
Glad you took your time on this review. It's great so far.
Oh so you WILL do star force!
If I recall correctly the Houdini of the bwach makes a re-appearance in starforce 3. You're welcome.
May be late, but this is an awesome video to have come out on my birthday. Keep up these vids man, love 'em!
Commenting for the algorithm and that sweet, sweet nostalgia.
I'd say the Battle Network games make some of the best use of the GBA sound.
Thanks for making this, can't wait for your next review!

I didn't see a "part 1" on the video so I thought the entire second half was going to be reviewed in 10 minutes. I was duped.

Blizzardman:hey come on!
Oh, man. I can't wait to see what part 2's gonna bring us in terms of humor and facts.
Team Protoman was the first BN game I have ever played. The only reason I got it because it was in a bargain bin at a costco and it was the best looking gba game in there. But I have enjoyed the BN and SF series since then. Watching your other videos have been a nostalgic trip. Thanks man.
