At age 63, I bought a five-acre piece of land that was an abandoned farmstead that hadn't been plowed in over 65 years. This year will be the first summer that I will be re-establishing this farm. I am the first person in three generations to operate a farm in my family. My only regret is that I haven't done this sooner in my life.
The music and the old man's voice is making me emotional...when he said "it's the closest thing to God" he just touched my heart.... I needed to hear that! The struggles, the uncertainties, the emotions...it really has to be something that you love!
I was told at 12 years old, "farming is a great existance, but that is all it is or ever will be. You'll never get rich but you'll enjoy every day regardless of the pain and strife."
I wanted to farm when I was young but dad lost the farm in the early 1980's. Now I've got a 1 acre garden on my daughters place, growing lots of vegetables, especially dry beans. I can get evangelical about beans 'cause they're great sources of protein and fiber and they improve the soil! I am in heaven!
I started farming in 1985. I was age 27. My father told me Id never make it. I was sure of myself....and went ahead. Bought 160 acres. We started milking 30 cows ..... In 1988 we had a drought. Bought everything off of a semi. In 1989 all my seeding froze out. Another year.....bought all the hay off of a semi. Finally.......after that..things went great ! But...... with that all being said........ From age 15.......I saved every penny that fell into my hands. Never went out......never had a drivers license until age 19. Never owned a car / truck until age 25. I helped milk cows and farm on my fathers farm......saved everything I could. Never went to dances...... bars........dated girls......nothing. In the end.....it worked out ! Most people that want to be farmers are not that dedicated. Farming is staying at home.......doing the work. Theres plenty of work to be done !
I have such deep love and respect for farmers now. God opened my eyes to see more His heart for them and what they are doing. And this old man just fits right into that.
I am 44 now and I always had deep respect for farmers. And I rarely watch movies or TV ( reality shows and documentary ) . Lot of people watch fictions and push themselves away from reality only to end up with stress and psychological problems. In fact, I am looking for a small piece of land to fulfil my dream of becoming 80 percent self sufficient.
Ive lived in new orleans my whole life. Never even been on a farm. Last few years ive wanted to start my own farm just to grow my own crops and cattle not even to sell. The way this country has changed and the stuff they put in our food will actually kill. This has made me want to grow my own food and be more in touch with nature.
my parents (in their late 50s) just started farming for the first time in their life! (they're starting a vineyard) I'm proud of them for trying something completely different (they used to own different businesses over the decades).
Wow...I started tearing up when you said "Closest thing to G_d." Wow. 30 year old, noob Farmer here. Just moved out of Orlando City, Florida up to Zanesville, Ohio on a huge property. Ready to create my own life. I am so inspired. Grow, grow, grow!
I farmed for years, followed my dad when was young and was the only thing I really ever wanted to do since I can remember. I had to quit because of physical and financial reasons in 1995. I can tell you I've missed every single day since. I'm 68 now not in good physical shape but would give anything to go back and start over
I inherited a farm and have a tractor & mower, but no crop equipment. I don't know what is a first good crop to plant. That doesn't need 10 attachments

My grandparents both are farmers sometimes I help around but when I was younger I was basically my grandpa’s shadow now I’ve slowly been getting into it again so yeah I hope I can start my own farm when I’m older
I often come back to this video for inspiration. This quiet tenacity, dedication, love and most importantly God is what so many have gotten off track from, as he suggests. This video sums up how to be happy and successful in life in every way imaginable. You just have to imagine. I would suggest anyone, whom may be going thru trying times, don’t know what direction to turn, or what to do, I urge you to revisit this video and apply its principles. You will most certainly be as successful as you desire. Remember, slow motion is better than no motion.
I like how that farmer explained it. I live in a village but i lived mostly in the city. My family used to have a small farm a long time ago but we all abandoned it. Now that im older i miss those times and think about them....
I have quite a story or our family farm but the long and short of it is it’s getting extremely hard for the small family farm to exist. It just isn’t your world any longer. This is dangerous for humanity I’ve made a decision to return to simplistic healthy living for what is under my control. We rent the land out now however I have sown my share of seeds and harvested many many bushels commercially. I’ve done it , lived it,so did my grandfather whom had the largest impression on me. I was lucky enough to be here and be able to do it.
The local farmers markets are the only way you can survive in a small farm these days. To be successful, you have to eat it, drink it, sleep it and live it, seven days a week, all year long.
Nobody seems to get what he said that he'd rather have a few acres at 10 to 15 grand an acre than the 400 he's got. Then he chuckles. That's the reality of what farming is today. The farmers are hard-working folks. But their blood sweat and tears is being overshadowed for the price they pay today. My daughter of 15 wants to get into agriculture. So I've been looking into farming again. It's not what everyone thinks. The family farm of years ago has been abolished by industrialized farming.
Well said. I am also looking for 10 acres, but, the cost of the land is too high. And I see few millionaires who hold 1000 acres land and do nothing but wait till it appreciates.
Full time job on the side and retirement plan and cow calf on side I seen many people do it that way. I did that way 40 acres for 18 yrs no debt for 2 yrs bachelor helps bought land for 8.8 interest went down some then went back up paid off everyday think about it if you so desire. Hard to find land to rent
That might explain why Eustace Bagge(the farmer from "Courage the Cowardly Dog") is so grumpy because he spent decades working hard with low pay to feed the urban and suburban people.
I'm currently in the middle of building up a relationship with Jesus Christ and our Father and I thought becoming a farmer would really make me humble and appreciate what God has given to us. Are you guys by any chance looking for young guys who are willing to work the fields? I have no experience at all but i just want to learn and grow as a human being. I've always thought how cool it would be to be a farmer.
Idk what its like to farm but I've always wanted to try it. To me i rather be a farmer then a construction worker! But overall this video is great advice to me.
The one thing everyone wants to do as a fad, but not commit or apply the logic and hard lifestyle to do. Nothing good or fulfilling comes easy, or is giving to oneself. The fulfilment and rewards come from the logic passed on, the fulfilment of others receiving the bounty and harvest is joy for them. That is the silent joy of a true farmer.

It’s great inspiration for those that are inheriting a farm and have passion, but for most of us young folks, it’s a dream that we will work for with little financial return. Margins have mostly been decreasing across the board for the past 30 years, people are retreating to the “countryside” with COVID allowing work from anywhere which has driven up land prices, and most banks won’t lend more than a tractor loan and 20 acres to a beginning farmer without a guarantor. Coming from an ag lender’s perspective...
I don't think you get into farming to get wealthy, I didn't get into driving trucks to get wealthy, I did it so I can get by and raise a family. Maybe someone doesn't need to clock in, they could spend all day with their family working the land, reaping what you sow, imagine going whole months with spending money only on bills. That's my dream.
