Agricultural revolution is required when their is shortage of food produced for the total number of people to be fed. Which is not the case; the food produced is surplus for the world's population. In India if for next two years farmers don't grow wheat then still the country's population can be fed through the buffer stock. So the problem is mismanagement of food. Food is in excess with some and they waste it. And many don't even have food to have a single meal a day. Another agricultural revolution might be required when world's population crosses 9 billion.
And if we ate more plants instead of meat, we would have more than enough food to feed even the population we will have beyond the year 2050! It's more about making our diets efficient rather than producing even more
I am a farmer. Really, if we want sustainable development, we must pay attention to farmers. Because the price of agricultural products that supermarkets buy has not changed compared to before. But they sell higher prices to consumers on the grounds of environmental protection.
Ted-Ed did what they do the best always! Use the power of animation and narration to promote a societal change to make our futures better! Keep up the good work!
I’m really impressed with how you explained 3:56 . Everything is so detailed and easy to understand, I’ve learned a lot. Thank you for sharing such valuable insights!
the animation part at 6:18 had me in awe. I love these videos, they are really inspiring and knowledgeable, whilst also being accessible and easy to understand.
I appreciate the notion that we can do this now! We need not wait for future technology - by using indigenous techniques, permaculture, and other agricultural innovations we can easily and resiliently produce affordable and regenerative food for everyone
We need to combination. Return to indigenous practices would cause a collapse killing billions. Need to learn from both. & indigenous agriculture is not perfect. Most of these people fail to produce enough food for themselves. We certainly have to learn from indigenous, but then improve the biological techniques 10 fold using material scientific understanding.
Imagine if our generation would spend their energy and time to implement innovations like these, instead of becoming professional protesters and blaming others. We would get there much faster without excluding the great advancements humanity achieved so far. Innovation, BEING the difference and entrepreneurship - that’s the way to go!
This is one of the reasons I'm studying bioengineering and data science. Many question me, telling that it's a bad mix, but understanding the environment and analyzing its data is one of the most improtant things for the future.
Hats off to people who has created such a amazing animated video ❤️👍 Indeed as population grows, there is will increase pressure to agricultural sector. Instead of putting money in developing chemical fertilizers and pesticides and thus destroying the land further, we use focus the ways the more yield is produced with very less damage. Most focus should be on making organic compost which will yield the nutrition of land. And for that better waste management can be implemented. So here we not only feeding hunger but also managing waste as well
@@Juan94766 it's possible. Like JFK once said "Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings." We really just need to find a way. I honestly believe that lots of progress is really going to be made when younger generations begin rising to power in politics. Since the upcoming generations have a different mindset and view of the world. Many of them lived in areas that are diverse meaning more acceptance to different cultures. I also already see many of the young generation protest against our government's method of handling several problems. So from what I see, the new generations are becoming more politically active and since there has been an increase of people going to college that also means that the will be more educationally aware. Of course we shouldn't wait for the younger generations and we should begin taking action now.

I think the 'perfect' farm would be one that uses every resource efficiently, is eco-friendly, and also supports local communities. We’re definitely seeing farms today that are taking huge strides towards this!
The most important part is to find an alternative to beef. 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions are due to the production of beef and cheese. Deforestation's #1 cause is creating pastures (look at the amazon or the boreal forest). A truly green world is one where we don't eat a lot of beef. Without that, all of this is simply not the full picture. Sincerely, a meat loving chemist.
@@nidohime6233 lmao I don't even remember writing this comment...the problem is volume. It is simply impossible to consume beef sustainably without some form of carbon-capture... especially as the population continues to increase. Idk I dont see it changing either.

There’s enough food for everybody - but our government literally incentivized growing less food to protect the monetary value of the food as a product.
@Jumpcut Jimmy In the U.S., the government subsidizes farmers to NOT grow corn on their farmland. In this instance, the government is paying famers not to produce food, which is my complaint. I don't have an issue with the government subsidizing farmers to actually grow food.
@Jumpcut Jimmy but also I think people would still opt not to subsistence farm in most cases, since buying food allows for a lot more diversity in foods with a lot less time, effort and land.
@@Echosinfireify that's because if farmers were allowed to produce even more corn, the price will drop too much. Big farm can handle it since with economy of scale, they will still profit. Small scale farm with just one tractor? Yeah, good luck selling those corn with those prices.

This is a great video, but I can’t help but feel like we’re only talking about the science, environmental impact, and technical aspects of this. What about the social dimensions of this second agricultural revolution? Like how can the concentration of resources into the hands of giant corporations like Monsanto affect the feasibility of a global initiative such as this?
Judy, they lost me at CATTLE. I am a farmer. Cattle are unsustainable. Beef makes no sense for our planet. Cattle eating "native grasses" are just cattle eating grass. A lot of it. And many gallons of water daily. Agreed with Monsanto, Bayer, etc. creating an UNSUSTAINABLE future. Ask the Amish or the indigenous central Americans who can no longer farm because of Monsanto.
Where are you from? Your name sounds Bengali. Yes we two have the same interest and perhaps the same nationality. Ok maybe not the same country but Bengali afterall.
Uhm hello Ted Ed,fellow indian here, just wanted to tell you that the map of India was actually wrong. It included pakistan which has been a seperate country for about 72 years now. I hope if you can fix it please.
A few things I would like to critique. The focus is to not find ways to feed 7+ billion people but how can we actually prevent total global collapse? Agriculture is a key factor to sustaining our livelihood but is it actually sustainable for many generations? This video criticized rice paddies for contributing methane but in fact beef production is the number one emission of methane. This sounds misleading and also biased. Either corn and soy lobbies are influencing this video or someone is. We have to ask hard questions and make real cultural changes. We have to adapt with time but we also have to be realistic about what is best for future generations. Food is the solution to our problems but can be the opposite. We can never solve our issues, we always trade for new issues.
You're right about cattle. Here's a different perspective from an Indian source (where they grow a lot of rice): "The amount of methane produced each year by wetlands, seas, and other natural phenomena is on average of 367 million tonnes (MT/Yr). But the rice cultivation is about 30 MT/Yr. At the same time, on average of 340 MT of methane is emitted each year due to other human interventions. Most of the methane is emitted from the industrial sector itself. The oil and gas sector emits an average of 84 MT/Yr, through coal mining 44 MT/Yr, from waste deposits 68 MT/ Yr and from dairy farms and meat production on average 115 MT/Yr. Approximately 60 percent of total global methane emissions come from these anthropogenic sources. (Source: UNEP)" TL/DR: Natural sources: 367 MT/yr cattle (dairy & meat): 115 MT/yr oil/gas industry: 84 MT/yr waste (landfills): 68 MT/yr coal mining: 44 MT/yr rice production: 30 MT/yr Some good news: feeding small amounts of seaweed to cows seems to reduce methane production considerably.
I agree wholeheartedly. This is biased and *weird.* I'm a small farmer. Anything that starts out with CATTLE and talks about SUSTAINABLE is baloney. AS IF "native grasses" aren't just as terribly destructive in cattle ranching! AS IF we should be "focusing on fertilizer" if you actually had a dynamic system!! The whole thing was nonsensical, the few examples were not BEST PRACTICES. Ok, let's make all the small farmers around the world farm rice WITH TRACTORS. I get it. Sooooo much "easier," FOR MONSANTO'S *Special Rice.* Destroying small farmers and tying them to destructive cycles of insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, diesel and expensive equipment, etc. Just one example. The high-tech stuff with drones is used NOW by GIANT agribusinesses. It's all about CHEMICALS. and Proprietary seeds. I am ANGRY.
i think it might come but only for a small priviliged percentage of the world's population maybe, as it seems to require advanced technology. Big companies will eventually come to the point where even they have to think about sustainability as they can't make money off of dead land and they will have the financial power to develope and afford those technologies. I do agree though that the companies will only have the profit in mind and not feeding the world population. I could imagine that food prices might fall due to the higher production rates we might get from this while food waste might grow in parallel and none of the food will reach the poorer countries' populations in which these foods might grow. Even today we would be able to feed the world's population but we don't because the big companies don't see the profit in it.

I hate that you're right. We will only see change when children begin to starve
And if we ate more plants instead of meat, we would have more than enough food to feed even the population we will have beyond the year 2050! It's more about making our diets efficient rather than producing even more
This revolution is mostly about environment and ecosystem services
@Bob Bob yeah and reasons being capitalism, mismanagement of food and other basic necessities
@@a2r2verma you're right, unfortunately we had to go so far down the rabbit hole to realise our food depends on the environment
I am a farmer. Really, if we want sustainable development, we must pay attention to farmers. Because the price of agricultural products that supermarkets buy has not changed compared to before. But they sell higher prices to consumers on the grounds of environmental protection.

the animation part at 6:18 had me in awe.

This is SO important. We watched this in class and I needed to boost it myself. Let's spread the message!
This is one of the reasons I'm studying bioengineering and data science. Many question me, telling that it's a bad mix, but understanding the environment and analyzing its data is one of the most improtant things for the future.

That's a great combination, IMO
I loved how along with being amazingly informative, the native people from countries were depicted with such attention to the details! Great job!
Hats off to people who has created such a amazing animated video ❤️👍
Indeed as population grows, there is will increase pressure to agricultural sector. Instead of putting money in developing chemical fertilizers and pesticides and thus destroying the land further, we use focus the ways the more yield is produced with very less damage.
Most focus should be on making organic compost which will yield the nutrition of land. And for that better waste management can be implemented.
So here we not only feeding hunger but also managing waste as well
ok but why is no one talking about the animation?? its perfectly done
The idea of a 'perfect' farm is so intriguing! It’s an exciting challenge for the future of farming!
"It will take unprecedented global cooperation"
So, it´s doomed to fail.
I know right, but there has to be a way to make this work
@@Juan94766 i hope so, i dont really think we are doomed, not yet :)
First step to doing something is thinking you can.
Splendid animation. The video was so engrossing and informative, i shared it to all of my friends. It is true that we must no longer degrade climate and soil and try to improve on the existing land. Escpecially because in the future, we will have about 11 billion humans.

Lol
It would be hard since people like beef after all. Maybe with better ways to raise cattle would help in the matter.
@@nidohime6233 lmao I don't even remember writing this comment...the problem is volume. It is simply impossible to consume beef sustainably without some form of carbon-capture... especially as the population continues to increase. Idk I dont see it changing either.
What about fresh meat.
Disappointed they didn't mention insect farming and indoor/vertical farming.
I don't really believe vertical farming is the future...
Vertical farming is cute but you'd need 5-10 cities of vertical farms to feed inhabitants of one 'real' city...
also, vertical farming depends on seeds from the field ...

We can create the perfect sustainable farm using Redstone and Slime technology.
There’s enough food for everybody - but our government literally incentivized growing less food to protect the monetary value of the food as a product.
@Jumpcut Jimmy Not completely. Farming in ancient egypt was very centralized.
Thats exactly why thing that are essential for human existence should NEVER be attached to monetary interest.
@@Echosinfireify that's because if farmers were allowed to produce even more corn, the price will drop too much. Big farm can handle it since with economy of scale, they will still profit.
Small scale farm with just one tractor? Yeah, good luck selling those corn with those prices.
This won't be achievable in an individualistic society

"When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers, therefore, are the founders of human civilization" anyone remember this quote from civ 5?

@@maxmcdonald7798 the quote was about human civilisation allowing for art. Which it didn't. We had technology and art long before settlement. The obsession over settlement is the reason nomadic indigenous people are mistreated and robbed.

Yeah, I thought so as well, then we can probably use biodegradable plastics and (or) recycle expiring drones.
We can't Robot our way out of this.
More emphasis on plant based diets please! It's more than an afterthought. We could end world hunger by choosing plant based and drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions too.
This is a great video, but I can’t help but feel like we’re only talking about the science, environmental impact, and technical aspects of this. What about the social dimensions of this second agricultural revolution? Like how can the concentration of resources into the hands of giant corporations like Monsanto affect the feasibility of a global initiative such as this?
nicely done
Judy, they lost me at CATTLE. I am a farmer. Cattle are unsustainable. Beef makes no sense for our planet. Cattle eating "native grasses" are just cattle eating grass. A lot of it. And many gallons of water daily. Agreed with Monsanto, Bayer, etc. creating an UNSUSTAINABLE future. Ask the Amish or the indigenous central Americans who can no longer farm because of Monsanto.
Love the visuals in this one!

Loved this!
(Source: UNEP)"
TL/DR:
Natural sources: 367 MT/yr
cattle (dairy & meat): 115 MT/yr
oil/gas industry: 84 MT/yr
waste (landfills): 68 MT/yr
coal mining: 44 MT/yr
rice production: 30 MT/yr
Some good news: feeding small amounts of seaweed to cows seems to reduce methane production considerably.
I am ANGRY.
You have shown the wrong Map of My India, Make sure don't repeat it again, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are Integral Part of India.❤❤
considering what most companies would do if they are promised money, i don't think this future will ever come
i think it might come but only for a small priviliged percentage of the world's population maybe, as it seems to require advanced technology.
This video should reach more people, this is important.
