As someone whos spent the last 17 years in the Concrete and Asphalt worlds I long to become a first generation farmer. Making active steps towards that goal everyday but it always seems just out of reach. Thank you for your videos, they are an inspiration and a great resource for someone like me.
Hey from a 17yr veteran roofer who’s working on becoming a first generation farmer. You can do a lot if you keep low personal overheard and point your pretax business income toward the land. plus property values in a lot of rural areas connected to blue states are dropping pretty significantly, so even lower cash offers are going to be considered. I’m kinda in that situation and it’s looking like I could get a good chunk of farmable land a little sooner than I thought.
Stay focused, stay the course and it will happen. I've been in the medical field for over 35 years. I too, will be a first generation farmer and I am half-way there to pay cash down to purchase my homesteading acreage. I have been researching homesteading and watching land in several states for three years but I stay focused on the dream and the dream keeps you going. Don't give up!
I was in the Army for 12 years and have been a mechanic, manufacturing and retail in management positions. I keep dreaming about having my own small farm once kids are adults. Thanks for the video!
I always enjoy listening to Pete talk. I'm a helicopter pilot and started a farm a few months ago. I only have goats right now but am ready to add cattle. I spend most of my free time working on the farm or researching things for the farm. I have muscle cramps every night after working on the farm, but I am excited to get back to it every time.
I just ran across your videos today. I grew up farming, Grandfather had 180 acres, and couple cows, My Father had almost 3,000 acres, 150-200 head of cattle, farrowed and finished pigs so around 1200 head sometimes more. It was a lot of work. Grandpa passed away, And dad retired . I bought 20 acres and slowly getting back into farming over the last 6 years. It's a great life and would never give that up. And no I did not inherit anything from my family. Started a construction company and retired from that. Your videos are full of info to help people understand what it takes or what to expect beforehand. Great job !

Love your videos. I grew up on a small ranch I've already seen all the issues. A few years ago a big winter storm blew in I would work at the water department in the day feed cattle at night. One time I had ice my beard and my job called me to fix a water leak. I'm in the guard and every deployment I miss working the farm so after this deployment I'm gonna start my own ranch.
Love how candid this video is. Great info!!! Thank you for the honest content. We bought raw land in the southwestern tier of NY & are getting ready to embark on our farming expedition, at age 45
#3 & #4 are the most important. We farm 10 acres and it is working great. Just pick the right animal and fit it into your current schedule. Love the videos Pete. Your awesome!
Farming doesn’t have to be about $200,000 tractors and half million dollars combines. My biggest word of advice is don’t get in over your head. Keep track of spending and don’t get caught up with having to have the new and best equipment. At that point your working just to pay the equipment costs & you’ll never get ahead. We make do with what equipment we have nothing new just older well maintained equipment. Good luck and cheers 🍻 from Prairie Sunset Ranch !!
I just ordered your book. I'm inspired by your decision to go into farming and how you have a general plan and guiding principles and stick to it. I'm 64 and just worked through my life buying "stuff" and I'm still not very happy. I'll try to use your example as a guide. Thanks.
Hey Pete, Just found you! 10 months on our farm and so many truths. Year 1, we made decisions not to invest a lot of funds. So thankful we didn't, just keeping ahead of unexpected costs. Come August, year 1; we will start to invest in equipment and any animals, if any this year.(Now have a cat! A must!!) Starting slow is such wisdom. Totally agree with you. Thank you again!!
Good afternoon Peter. I'm in the corporate finance world right now and have a small farm but would love to jump in head first and leave the rat race behind. I found your channel while looking for advice on taking the next step. So far, I'm starting small and using what I know. Hopefully, I can make the move soon. I look forward to watching more of your videos and I'll definitely be checking out your book. Thanks for posting and good luck on your farm!
Extremely educational and I now continue to farm through you.Love your practical approach to living on the land while making a profit.Keepdoing what you feel in your heart and spirit.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I hope you continue to be a source of information for those of us interested in small time farming. The business part of it is very important. I'm planning on starting a similar venture and the farm will need to pay for itself if I'm to be able to do this. My hubby is okay with the rat race and with really young kids, we're already living on one income and able to save. So the info you're sharing is so, so valuable, crucial even. I grew up around cattle. My dad is now gone and can't share the business side of things with me. All I know are the daily chores lol. Thanks for stepping into those shoes for me. I can't voice my appreciation enough.
We have been enjoying your videos! At one point in this video you are in front of a glass bookcase. I think we have the same one! We have never seen one just like ours. It was my wife's great grandparents and has been handed down for years. Cheers.
I like his teaching, im thinking of doing something but I'm apprehensive because I'm 65 and feeling older, I have 20 acres mostly pasture but all over grown so do I want to do it, I don't have a tractor and I'm on a fixed income. So much to think about. But I have to do something to keep moving and enjoying the process,

Peter you are an amazing educator and creator, I recently have sold my business and have been debating on whether or not I want to really become a small scale farmer at 56 years old. Your channel along with alot of books that you also have in your collection have been really helpful to me. I am going to start with the gateway "drug" chickens and see if I really want it. I just ordered your book and look forward to hearing about your journey. Thanks for everything!
Thank you for this different perspective as I am looking to do this as a side gig. I currently have chickens, plan on pig pen and cattle before summer. Currently have HUGE garden, rows are 320 ft long. Also have a green house. Last fall I put up over 500lbs of potatoes up for fall harvest and didn't run out until January. Hopefully my spring Garden load will last till fall and fall last till spring harvest. Planting 1 extra row this year of them. Still have frozen and jarred vegetables from fall garden.
BS"D You are an amazing man/human being with beautiful and precious characteristics and I find myself learning from you not only farming BUT also living!!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us
Fellow architect in Albany, have considered forest management as my “next job”, your videos are inspiring. will stop at your stall at the Ithaca farmers market next time thru
I became a farm manager on a million dollar plus farm, that's not counting the animals. 6 broiler houses 2 herds of cattle (250 give or take and 300 give or take), 375 acres doing hay and it had 14 ponds but didn't harvest the fish (except for us). In one year we were ranked 9th in state, I loved it but it was a lot of work for me and the wife. I still want my own farm just not that big and demanding.
I'm very late probly but I'm new. And I'm glad you said books cause I'm always on the internet looking things up. I didn't think books had a such thing with farming and live stock. I know the struggles of not having money. I'm here right now at my lowest. But making some progress cause I just got a job a few days ago. So i gotta save up money for this. Wish me luck!
Do you know you can benefit from agricultural investment without owning a land? Agro farms creates opportunity for individuals to invest in their farms through their website and earn daily ROI without doing the farm work. It's a safe and profitable investment. ❤️

Pete, I'm a machinist outside of Rochester, Ny. I'm 35 and I've been at my company for 15 years. After watching you're videos I see this is possible and my soul is screaming to do it. I hate working for someone else. It's depressing. machining is a wonderful trade but I've lost my love for it and the routine of going to that place to work every day has become depressing. There's 130 acres of family land with a nice barn not being used for anything in Mansfield, Pa. I have a 2016 3/4 GMC, a 12k trailer, a Super M, a Super H, a '63 GMC 4000 dump truck and there's a '53 Ford Jubilee down there that my great grandfather bought new. I have a log splitter that I built, several Stihl saws (including my ported 044 that I'm in love with hehe). So I have a few pieces of equipment and some land to get started with. I'm gonna give this some serious consideration. Thanks for the inspiration, and I wish you and yours well. Happy farming!
I love your vids. I'm sure you have millions of views . Your a great man/wife combo. Yes Wedge tailed eagles take an occasional chicken. Or even a small kangaroo. But they are so rare now. I was spun out that you have a farm so close to New York. I'd swap jobs with you any day. Driving in Perth sucks. Everybody/almost breaks the law. Hi from Western Australia.
Excellent content! In a few years we expect to transform our long term rental property on 4 acres of tropical rainforest into a live on micro farm with a couple of eclectic ohana cottages open for vacation rental guests. In the process of researching our options...planning on developing permaculture type orchard areas considering ducks and other poultry along with a few Idaho pasture pigs or possibly dairy goats. These are the hard honest questions we find ourselves talking about. I am also a Joel Salatin fan. Aloha😃🌈🤙
I'm in the process of relocating to North Carolina, and I'm seriously considering starting a small herd of Black Angus cattle. Not for business, but because I've always found the presence of these beautiful animals to be incredibly therapeutic. There's something about watching them that's just soothing. How big is this beautiful herd? ❤ I'm curious, how many acres do you think would be the minimal requirement for a small herd of 25-30 Black Angus cattle? I want to ensure they have ample space and are well taken care of. Looking forward to your insights. Thanks for all your informative videos! Best regards,
Great message, very valuable perspective thanks. I am planning/hoping to move my family of five to a 10-20 acre homestead and spend 2-3 years raising some livestock for ourselves and friends and family. This will give me some firsthand experience and also some time to strategize scaling, which I would like to do at first on our land and then by leasing land in our area. I was raised and have worked for our family-owned business in the city, and started my own bookkeeping business in the last couple years. You’re exactly right when you say “you can’t fly blind.” I believe my 20+ years of experience in a small business-owning family as well as my accounting background will be a real asset when it comes to scaling and financial planning for a small farm. How old were you when you made the switch, if I may ask?
I enjoy your videos. I’d love to start a small homestead in a few years. My grandparents had about 160 acres in town before I was born. Would love to run it as a small family adventure and see how it goes?
I always looked into cattle farming because auto mechanic was a main job but I didn’t always want to focus on that. I have a HUGE goal, owning a shop and farming hobby. I really want my life to be surrounded by land and not buildings. Wish me luck
I’m relocating to NC next year. I find a herd of cattle to be therapeutically calming for me and I enjoy seeing them. So I would like a herd on my property. Can A Hobby Herd Pay for Themselves Say 30 Cattle or So? On this thought, I would like to know if it’s possible to get a small herd to at least pay their own way, that is at least break even on the cost of keeping them via the cattle themselves? Cattle Rancing for a Living My second thought is that if I could, I would really enjoy ranching beef cattle for a living. I would appreciate pointers on: Is it possible to do this with beef cattle alone, that is without getting into dairy? How to get started? How many cattle needed to earn a sustainable living? How many acres for said amount of cattle? (Carrying capacity) I’m serious about this desire and would appreciate some real kind supportive feedback. Thanks

#3 & #4 are the most important. We farm 10 acres and it is working great. Just pick the right animal and fit it into your current schedule. Love the videos Pete. Your awesome!
What animals do you have?
I will be ordering your book. I usually read only my check book so your video meant allot to me.
Ha ha! Thanks Sumner!
As soon I checked the video,I subscribed directly.
Thank you for your video! Yes, we went and brought the book to go with our 9 chicks!
Hallelujah Prairie Sunset Ranch! I love older equipment, and debt is a drag.
Just for letting you know.... Some people from Poland watching you 😉
Great job mate and good luck!
👍🇵🇱🇺🇸👍
But I have to do something to keep moving and enjoying the process,
@@jerrylansbury9558 interesting Jerry, I worked as a janitor all my career and now I'm retired and trying to keep busy around the house, I believe that war is coming soon like the end of September so I thought some animals and a large garden my sustain me and whoever . The Lords coming and ultimately he'll be my rock
Your videos have been so informative
Like you
Love farmalls
Watching again. We've sold our mountain home. Hoping for the best. Growing for ourselves.
yes
I'm glad you found happiness
You are the ultimate motivator in the world!
BS"D
You are an amazing man/human being with beautiful and precious characteristics and I find myself learning from you not only farming BUT also living!!!
Wise advice, yep subbed and following. I like the way you explain everything in detail.
I'm here in 2022 and the food market the way it is these types of farms are the future. And the market is supporting that.
Thanks fore taking you time to make vedioes ,wanda and
I made that same choice with two offspring over fourty years ago wenever looked back
All I can say is THANK YOU for your mentoring.
very informative thanks for the info m also thinking of raising cattle on my land ....ready to be patient
Excellent information. I am looking forward to be partially self sufficient on a 30 acre land. Thank you.
You're welcome Kumar A! Best of luck!
Love your video I live in Australia I was on a sheep farm for 40 years now I'm 84 years old
So to old to do much but look at your Videos Casey
Do you know you can benefit from agricultural investment without owning a land? Agro farms creates opportunity for individuals to invest in their farms through their website and earn daily ROI without doing the farm work. It's a safe and profitable investment. ❤️
Just found your channel. I'm 55 just made decision to make a life and career change. Bought 40+ acres and have always wanted to do something similar.. life is an adventure so next year will be starting a homestead farm for semi retirement. Great videos keep them coming 👏💪😉
Best of luck Ed!
@@JustaFewAcresFarm thank you..it will definitely be a adventure after living in Spain for many years and now planning for my return home..subscribed to your channel I see I have many videos to watch in the mean time 😉👍
Love all the Red Power! Best part of being a farmer.
Thank you Wils! I love old Farmalls!
I wish I have you as my friend
I always wanted a friend like you
best informative video ever watched on farming
Looking forward to following your journey!
Thank you Ernie!
Hi Dan, I hope everything works out for you. Farming is hard work but it's really rewarding. Best of luck!
@@JustaFewAcresFarm Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to more MD content. I've had my fingers crossed on that cylinder head for you.
Man, your videos are awesome and super helpful. Thank you for putting them together.
Thank you two for your honesty!
Aloha😃🌈🤙
Thank you Peter! This is helping us look into our dream.
I'm curious, how many acres do you think would be the minimal requirement for a small herd of 25-30 Black Angus cattle?
Hey, about to buy 40 acres and so happy :) I know I'm not to start a hard, happier life
Pet in New Bethlehem there is a park called Him Town park. On Fridays the local farmers and growers bring their good. That seems to work will
Loved this first video and can't wait to watch more! Thank you!!
I enjoy your videos. I’d love to start a small homestead in a few years. My grandparents had about 160 acres in town before I was born. Would love to run it as a small family adventure and see how it goes?
Just wanted to shout out! Amazingly informative sir!
I always looked into cattle farming because auto mechanic was a main job but I didn’t always want to focus on that. I have a HUGE goal, owning a shop and farming hobby. I really want my life to be surrounded by land and not buildings.
Wish me luck
Another great vlog, Pete
I’m relocating to NC next year. I find a herd of cattle to be therapeutically calming for me and I enjoy seeing them. So I would like a herd on my property.
Can A Hobby Herd Pay for Themselves
Say 30 Cattle or So?
On this thought, I would like to know if it’s possible to get a small herd to at least pay their own way, that is at least break even on the cost of keeping them via the cattle themselves?
Cattle Rancing for a Living
My second thought is that if I could, I would really enjoy ranching beef cattle for a living. I would appreciate pointers on:
Is it possible to do this with beef cattle alone, that is without getting into dairy?
How to get started?
How many cattle needed to earn a sustainable living?
How many acres for said amount of cattle? (Carrying capacity)
I’m serious about this desire and would appreciate some real kind supportive feedback.
Thanks
I just came across your channel and I''m a new subscriber. Great videos and very thorough thoughtful information! I want to say thank you for your time putting these videos together which is invaluable for people like me.
I enjoyed your video very much, very informative and motivate, and especially your honest to yourself, calm and down to earth approach.
Just purchased your book from amazon, and looking forward.
We are in the process of selling our safe cozy home in NYC, and in the market for a 100 acres farm, I’m about your age, and homeschooling 5 young kids 3 to 10 of age.
Lots of butterflies in my stomach, but have faith and courage.
Hopefully god is on our side:))
Thanks Keen Coyote! Best of luck with your new farm; it's a big leap to take.
pause it at 00:16 he really does not look happy in a suit. I'm glad he found his happy place and I'm happy to watch it on youtube.
Amazing insight. Thank you for this thoughtful episode.
Hey thank you this video really helped I am pretty young and everyone thinks I’m crazy but I don’t mind the hard work that goes into ranching and all of the other stuff with it and I have done so much research already so I definitely know it’s not all sunshine and rainbows that for sure
But my dream is really to become a rancher and your video just helped me to figure out what needs to be done will be reading your book too
I'm Satisfied ....You just earned a Subscriber... I love nature too
Love your video!
I am 17 and want to have a farm one day. I love animals and machinery and am willing to work.
Good job on your video and farm!
I like this video, I am thinking of doing the same. At the moment I work as a Software Engineer, but I dislike more and more just sitting behind the computer all day watching a screen. And every software issue the management wants us to make is always in a hurry. At the moment I am looking into the options of raising chickens and ducks and what I all need/costs.
Thank you sir
This was really helpful sir.... I really want to go into it
Such interesting.
I have only one goat.
But great hope I have achieved from you.
The confidence you took,wow!
I know I will make it one day ,Salute
Thanks for all the information about how to start. Im about to start my own livestock farm on meet chicken and eggs plus goats. Ive subscribed and really like the content in your videos! 🖤
Always great information Pete. You’re the best!
I will be following from here. I'm watching and learning.
Love and Respect for you brother!
Another great video. We started with cattle.
