- Hey guys. If you are looking for advice on beginning a farming operation or are a young farmer, then this video is for you. I am a beginning farmer that did not grow up farming. This is part one of a two part series on beginning farmers. I talk about my story and some of the steps I took to get here. Don’t forget part 2 as I go into more detail. Thanks for watching! To have a farm that's been in your family since the Revolution - and not only that, but for it to have been payment for service in our war for independence - is one of the most beautiful things I think I've ever heard. There is no money in the world that can buy something like that. That's a real inheritance.
Wow! My dad also left the family farm to be a pastor.
Makes me sad though because he disinherited everything.
My husband and I are purchasing our own farm soon. We are going to make an offer this month. Pray for us 😊
How'd it go??
What size of land and how much capital do you need to start a farm?
Update?
Just saw there were replies to my comment 🙂
We purchased the farm! It is around 105 acres.
We have chickens, two dairy cows and we are currently planting over 100lbs of five varieties of garlic.
I am also starting a flower farm.
We went with an FSA loan instead of a bank due to the advantages for farmers...
Locked in interest rate with the option to lower it and we are paid a co-op patronage check yearly which typically covers one month payment or helps with other farming expenses.
@@rebeccapem5550 that's amazing! God is good. I dream to start a farm one day with my future husband
Today I will be sharing my story to. I am a 16 year old Mexican and I am currently living in a double wide with 15 others. I have always inspired to be a farmer just like my dad. I am not sure if farming on my ps4 counts but that’s my experience. I was told that there was a height limit to ride a tractor and that I was to small. So i turned my interest to soccer but then became a disappointment to my family when I was cut 4times (7th8th9th10th) so then I remembered that I could play on my ps4.
Sincerely, mumbles
Good for you! You'll
Make it... I'm a ;4th gen. Farmer!! But I'm in my 60s !! Been at it all my adult life....
Thanks for sharing that! I always enjoy hearing your experiences, you're a great story teller.
I’m glad, I rewatch the videos after edit and I bore myself!
Thanks for sharing your story. I enjoyed listening to it. I was born and raised on a farm until I was 9 or 10. My father was the manager of the PA state farm which was created to feed the patients of the Allentown State Hospital. If I recall correctly, we farmed 5000 acres. We had dairy cows, pigs, chickens etc.....I have very fond memories of the farm even at a young age. When my father returned from Korea, he married my mother and started the farm life. Unfortunately the state closed the farm in the early 80s. Had it still been in operation I know I would be farming to this day. I have a lot of interest in farming and watching your videos helps me to quench that thirst a little lol. Thanks again
Thanks, yea I remember when I wanted to farm and couldn’t. Watching UA-cam and helping my neighbors definitely helped.
Not sure where to even start not to mention the ones who think I'm crazy
What about now what point are u at
@Christian V animals for me
Great story, i like hearing about farmers/people family histories
Hey PA farmer, my Grandparents farmed just outside Williamsport and my cousin has since purchased the farm and raises polled Hereford cattle.Grandpap started farming in 1911 with Belgian horses and then farmed with a Farmall Super C, and a Farmall M until passing away in 2007.I ended up in Indiana when my dad was recruited to work in the Steel Mills on the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
kinfam1 thanks for watching. I'm about an hour and a half from the Williamsport area.
exact same story as me as in my grandparents farmed and my uncle took that farm over and farms it now but an hour away from me and my parents didn't have any interest in farming but i do so same story pretty much of it skipping a generation and the next generation starting up a totally new generation farmand i am trying!!
I'm rather a new subscriber and I thought I would watch the rest of your videos. My great grandfather had to sell our family farm in about 1982 and he quit farming shortly after. I recently bought one of his original tractors last summer and just recently started farming on my own. Thanks for the great videos and keep it up!
Welcome to the channel. Glad to hear you started farming. My part 2 Video of advice for beginning farmers, I go into more detail on how to start.
After I finish paying off my truck payment in 2 years time I want to find myself a small run down farm in Franklin County Pennsylvania with woods to be able to sell off all lumber harvested to help with a chunk of the loan payments for a farm when I'd go to buy one
I’d love to continue farming on our families farm, that’s been in the family since 1869, they sold the fields in the 90s, but I’d love to continue, it’s quite the fickle thing
Instresting story very good.
I use to watch my grandfather on his farm and I helped my grandfather on his farm for 20 and another farmer for one season i wish it was longer but it wasnt ive been wanting to start farming for a long time and my grandfather had red power his first diesel tractor was an international 806 then a drunk T bone his and the took off the front end so the tractor was sitting on the ground after that he got an international 856 with 100 horsepower the 806 had 94 horsepower then he an farmall H and a international 460 he only had a three tractors all together and those were the three tractors that my grandfather had since i was a kid because i drove international tractor's for a while and they are the best tractors 👍👍👍
I’m only 16 and I have mostly experience with chickens and soon getting goats but my family only has 1 acre of land so can’t really do to much with that and I just wanna start my own farm when I’m much older and moved out but idk how or where to start Idk how to come up with the money for 15+ acres of land I’m very non experienced with financial stuff but I’ll learn as I go
Really enjoyed watching your videos I'm a new subscriber your story is quit similar to my own. keep up the good work!
Josh Timer thanks for watching and subscribing.
Great story....thanks for sharing that with us.
enjoyed your story about the history of your family and how you got a job working on a dairy where you learned more. thanks for sharing.
I love combined harvester so much
My mothers grand mother owned a farm. Other than that only my uncle works on a farm. I absolutely love farming and even though im 14 farming is my dream job and to own a farm is a dream. I have 1-2 acres of my own land and a farmer has a unused 7 acre field which i am going to rent to have a few calves on it and try grow it up to a herd and shed for limousines. But I’m 14 and i can only dream
I want to be an architect for the first 2 years after I graduate highschool and then I want to start my own farm
Buy farmland at a young age, if you can get a loan. Then you have lots of time to pay it off while making an income from it, and it will keep appreciating. By doing this you build equity, with which you can buy more land and expand your operation. Can’t go wrong buying land really, can always sell it again if necessary.
My own PA farm family story is short and disappointing
My grandad and grandma had a farm in Orwigsburg. My dad, aunt, and two uncle's all worked it and it was a smallish farm. Crops and a few animals along with the legendary pony that bites (apperently it was untamable). Well, at some point my grandad divorces my grandmother, sells the farm, and fucks off to north Carolina to pursue house flipping leaving the rest of the clan high and dry. My dad is still mad about it decades later because the thing that kept him going back then was "all this work will pay off, this will all be mine one day so I should care for it now"
I'm going to pursue farming to try and reclaim the family farm. I think my dad would be really happy if I did plus it's more in line with what I enjoy. Hopefully in the next few years I can get some land and start :)
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
Ive always wanted to be a farmer!!!!!
Same here but I am afraid of my Parents they want to me to do a white shirt job but Im not intelligent enough I think I belong to farming.
It would have been nice to have seen your farm, instead of just looking at it through the barn door.
Nice story but you need to change the title. I watched this thinking there would be advice about farming. I hope the second video has valid farming info in it. Not knocking the story. It was a great story
Im just a 22 year old, city boy. But I want this lifestyle. I want to be a rancher with a herd of cattle or bison or even beefalo; and have commercial greenhouses for vegetables.
I want to start farming very badly. Even on a hobby level. I started doing a food plot size piece on my property this year. Hopefully get more acreage someday.
Benjamin Turner thanks for the view. In part 2 of this I try to give some more advice as to how I got here.
What I basically learnt was your family story, and not sure what that relate as advice to beginning farmers!
Part 2 goes into more of that if you are interested

Sounds like a similar story here. It’s amazing how land can change hands over time
Happy 4th and interesting story from a fellow Pennsylvanian !
Jennifer31741 thanks for watching!
If you are actually from Pennsylvania howdy the next time your in west sunbarry
How much land and how much money should one save to actually start a farm?
Lease land first, don't go too big, you don't need a lot of money to start if you have knowledge and ideas
Love your videos, authenticity, and skills. Any chance you do contract work for other farmers as it relates to IH1086 repair? Would love to give you some additional UA-cam content that’d be relevant for plenty of your followers. Messages me.
How old are you have to you working on the farm
Great story! 👍🏼
Thanks
I’m starting at 9 years old
Get off that gay ass fortnite boy
What happened at the end? Did a snake fall on your head or something? Curious lol

Chad McGroyperstein it’s going good. Just keep upgrading my equipment. Went from 10 acres to 140 in a year and a half.

Yea part 2 was the advice portion. Part 1 I was just trying to let everyone know how I got to this point. This was one of my early videos, I was thinking of revisiting this subject
