We did the same thing...we wanted to be self sufficient. My wife has lupus so what we eat is critically important! We knew the economy was going crumble in 2008. We bought 57 acres, started raising our own chickens with natural ingredients like wild flowers seeds and sunflower seeds, etc. We raised rabbits, ducks, guineas (they eat ticks!) and turkeys too. We grow our own food also!

I'm a retired dairy grazier, who farmed in southern Ohio. It is so great to see young farmers bringing new energy and ideas to farming, especially people of color. America needs more young farmers who are willing to challenge the old ways, and rural areas need a lot more diversity. "Farm to fork" is brilliant. I wish you all the best of luck and the determination to persevere. God bless and God speed.

94% of farmers on this planet are small, homegrown farms. The issue is that the small 6 percent of factory farms in this world take up 45 percent of agricultural land on this planet... we don't need more farmers, we need people to stop being so scared of farming anything more than 10 acres. I can not tell you how many hundreds of people I've met who claim to be farmers and only do so on one acre, or even a quarter of an acre... its pathetic, they think that if they can keep their land small, they won't have as much work... if you're going into agriculture to not work, you're going in for ALL the wrong reasons, and you shouldn't even be considering it.

Farming is extremely hard work. People have this vision of some dude in overalls feeding chickens. Nope. I had lots of friends that were farmers. During harvest they would work from 4 am to 9 pm of hard labor. You have to be born into it to really do it well and make it profitable. I have the most respect for farmers. It’s work I couldn’t do. If these people can do it God bless them and I hope they really succeed and thrive.

I so applaud this family not just for doing this, but how they are doing this. Not only are the rejuvenating the land but they are also by example of who they are personally showing that going back to the land is also rejuvenating the spirit. For many African Americans ( I am one) farming can be seen as a negative giving the history of agriculture where it pertains to African Americans, they are showing that yeah you can do it for yourself and make a modest living and be happy doing it, PROPS UP TO THEM!!! I know many people wont understand the last portion of my comments and that is okay, but it is all factual. To Heifer USA, thank you for presenting this video, to many people in the USA have bought into the notion that we have to have large scale agriculture in the USA, and that because we have large scale agriculture food is cheap. Never once do they think about how our food system is controlled by 6 large corporations and that we are beholden to them for food prices, my opinion if states would mandate no more suburban sprawl we could get a lot more small farmers in the country.
