- How to Start a Regenerative Farm from Scratch
⭐️ Have you ever wanted to start a regenerative farm from scratch? ⭐️
In this video, the Heifer USA team travelled to North Carolina to visit Grass Grazed Farm, a regenerative farm where founders Derrick and Paige Jackson have established and grown a successful business in just two years. In the community of Rougemont, just outside Durham, Grass Grazed Farm raises pastured poultry, forested pork, grass fed beef, grass fed dairy, and laying hens following regenerative agriculture practices.
We interviewed the Jacksons about the process of starting their farm - and now, we're sharing their advice with you! Keep watching to learn every step the Jacksons took to build Grass Grazed Farm.

I'm in tears of joy. I love the way this couple serve, grow and regenerate this farm. This gave me the go ahead to start my farm. Thank you... yes I'm in tears... much love
We're so grateful to have inspired you and played a role in your journey to regenerative farming!
Thank you!
@@grassgrazed thanking for the info i am thinking about doing this is TX in about 2 to 3 years. I hope i can pick your brains 🧠 one day
Me tooooooooo 📯🛐🌷
Most of our customers started like you. They got inspired and bought vacant land from us. Now, they have developed their properties into farms and started homesteading. Truly an inspiration.
We did the same thing...we wanted to be self sufficient. My wife has lupus so what we eat is critically important! We knew the economy was going crumble in 2008. We bought 57 acres, started raising our own chickens with natural ingredients like wild flowers seeds and sunflower seeds, etc. We raised rabbits, ducks, guineas (they eat ticks!) and turkeys too. We grow our own food also!
Guineas are I sanely loud though, my goodness!
@@h.s.6269 They definitely let you know when something isn't right!!
Awesome to hear! best of luck!
What a happy story. :)
How's it your wife doing now?
These guys give me strength. Born and raised in West Africa, after 23 years in the US, I'm playing to go back and started a sheep and cow business
Guess you are from Nigeria. You are always welcome back home brother
I watched a video were the man raised rabbits for meat and collected their urine to sell as fertilizer, low over head and very good income
Thanks for watching! Best of luck!
I hope that works out for you soon
Good for you
I loved every minute of this. In another lifetime I'd love to be a farmer feeding my community. I also love seeing Black farmers thrive and prosper.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching, Jamal!
@@grassgrazed Keep up the good work.
In this lifetime 😤
If you desire to be a farmer, make it happen! Nothing better than to see what you put into the soil, grow, raise from a baby mature to something productive and sustainable. I hope you chase after your dreams!
Love seeing people coming back to nature and leaving the big super markets behind. We need more home farmers. 🏡
Definitely!
94% of farmers on this planet are small, homegrown farms. The issue is that the small 6 percent of factory farms in this world take up 45 percent of agricultural land on this planet... we don't need more farmers, we need people to stop being so scared of farming anything more than 10 acres. I can not tell you how many hundreds of people I've met who claim to be farmers and only do so on one acre, or even a quarter of an acre... its pathetic, they think that if they can keep their land small, they won't have as much work... if you're going into agriculture to not work, you're going in for ALL the wrong reasons, and you shouldn't even be considering it.
@@facelessdrone..... yeah....challenges are there in every business but as I'm here I know if you're committed to farming like make it your full time job I believe you can't face many of them apart from disease outbreaks. But in most cases when you're on the ground you can still fight this.
I already have 15 acres waiting and with this passion already....hha... i can't wait getting income n get on ground as soon as possible but whatever it is I have to make my dreams come true..... we need to be producers of natural products
Being close to nature is the best.... trust me. The best gift ever.......
I'm a retired dairy grazier, who farmed in southern Ohio. It is so great to see young farmers bringing new energy and ideas to farming, especially people of color. America needs more young farmers who are willing to challenge the old ways, and rural areas need a lot more diversity. "Farm to fork" is brilliant. I wish you all the best of luck and the determination to persevere. God bless and God speed.
We completely agree! We hope to do our part in encouraging young people to take up regenerative farming as a career, especially when they're as clever and determined as Paige and Derrick are!
@@HeiferUSA please am looking for a work
@@HeiferUSA how does one become a farmer? do you have to go to college?
@@blank15053 skill, intelligence, creativity, and wit... after that. Research as much as possible, and buy some land. You dont need a degree.... thats ridiculous, you just need to make sure your ignorance is completely sponged. And I mean ALL of it, if you even think about treating an animal wrong... You aren't one for the job.
@@facelessdrone i would never treat an animal wrong, where did you get that?
I’ll be playing this video for my agriculture students. Absolutely love how this shows the process and struggles of starting a regenerative agriculture operation. Hats off to Derek and Paige!
We're so glad you enjoyed it! We're happy to provide teaching tools for future (and current) farmers!
Hugely inspiring even more so seeing black farmers and the support the community, their own intelligence and Heifer offered.
Thanks for the support, Chirstopher!
Why is the word black here. Why bring ethnicity to everything smh
@@sprig3432 perhaps you should use the UA-cam search engine and look up the plight of black farmers from reconstruction until now. This video is important.
@@sprig3432 It would be great if we lived in a utopia where race didn’t matter but that’s just not the world we live in and for me it’s refreshing to see any positive representations for black people especially a healthy couple that’s doing this together and are united. I was not a fan of Obama but what I did like is that his winning the presidency inspired many black people and seeing this couple do this makes me think maybe I can do it to. If you see many positive representations of yourself it might be hard to see why this would matter to others.
@@sprig3432 "This is America."
I love the term “learning farmer”. It is exactly where we are now on our journey to regenerate farming.
It's such a wonderful way to look at the learning/farming process - there's always something new to learn, especially with regenerative farming. We should all be learning farmers!
You never stop learning. Nature changes all of the time.
What a blessing to see this. My husband I purchased 33.5 acres in Franklin county not too far from where this couple lives. We’re deciding what to do with our land and this is very inspiring. Thank you
That is awesome! You can do it!
Hurry up because Jesus is coming!!!
We just bought 12 in Springfield
@@TriciaRP He's gonna stop all the farming?
This is so COOL! I grow up on a farm as a child. Famers are the backbone of America. Unfortunately, there need to be MORE Black farmers. They have been discriminated against by the U.S. Government, which is totally shameful!
We are so glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching.
I absolutely love this, I wish more black folks we get back into this..
So glad you enjoyed it!
Lots of black farmers but they’re disproportionately discriminated against, denied loans to sustain their farms from the US Dept of Agriculture (even during COVID), and pushed out of their farms in large numbers. Look up the black farmers association
@@MiniM69 You will be surprised how many blacks are already doing this but on smaller scale. It's our calling we are connected to nature, our ancestors were masters of agriculture.

Historically, farming was the mainstay … but, that lifestyle was not appreciated until recently.
@@macanoe5335 no its not.
This was very enjoyable and inspirational. I realized that even a "hobby farm" can be profitable on a smaller scale. My hobby is beekeeping and now I am ready to sell my honey. I like your comment, "Just grow something" . . . I would add, "Grow what you love; love what you grow"!
That's a great addition! With the right infrastructure and market, even a hobby farm can be profitable and beneficial for your community. Best of luck with beekeeping!
Nice! Congratulations!
Love what you say -- 'grow what you love; love what you grow."
I want to start beekeeping myself 💯🙌
@@jpage1331 Judy, I would encourage you to get started and get yourself a mentor through a "Bee Club" in your area. Check with your County Extension Office....have fun!

I served with Derrick. I’m not surprised of his success. He works hard at everything he does.

Hysterical! When I said we're getting chickens, my wife thought I was joking too. There's a lot to relate to here... lol

I love seeing our people do their thing
Isn't it wonderful to see regenerative farmers thriving?
"How can a chicken farmer run out of chickens?"
I used to ask myself questions like that on a wide variety of subjects! Now, I just shake my head! I can so relate!
Exactly!
I was grinning the whole vid, so proud of seeing peeps like us succeeding.
When I was young(er) I used to laugh at my now husband when he & his sister used to tie-out their goats & cows. Now that we’re older with kids & living in Japan, we’re currently discussing how to start a farm. Full circle. God blessing on your family & business
Thanks for watching! Subscribe for new vids every week :) !
why not proud of everyone succeeding?
@@ahmedkhalid8937 With a name like yours I’m baffled by your question Khalid.
When the system wasn’t built for you but against you, and you succeed, it needs notification. That’s why we still celebrate the ‘the first bla bla bla’. I suggest you go read-up on history.
Those who work hard will succeed. System is not designed against anyone. Chinese are doing great, indians and japanese and many other asian countries too. It is a mind set no one is holding back anyone. Those countries didn't build themselves in one night. There is collective effort of the whole community.
That's inspirational! As a fellow Veteran I KNOW HOW HARD it is to GET Start Up business funding...especially in agriculture/farming! Everything we've done... has been out of our own pockets! I'm SUPER happy for them!!
Thanks for the support, T!
Sometimes when u get involved with givt they want to control you. I went to my ag extn. Lady said a lot of farmers were on board, then in the 90s they quit en masse so u know the govt tried to get too much control
Thank you for your support.
I wish they allowed me to use my VA loan to starta business instead of for buying a house. Veterans make great Farmers and is good help with PTSD. I am in Colorado and just starting out with an acre and a half. I have 35 Chickens, 3 Turkeys, 2 Ducks and working a day job to get my Farm started. It does not seem like work taking care of the animals and my health is improving immensely keeping up with them. Joel Salatin was the first person I saw on UA-cam doing regenerative farming and found many others to share information with.
Having read through the comments it is plain to see you are an inspiration to those who title you as, "Their people." Just wanted you to know, you're both an inspiration to "People." I love what you're doing and the idea you're allowing us all to find inspiration in such a beautiful family. Ty for your service fellow soldier.

Great dreams you have! Farming and big families are two of God’s many blessing for us in this life (plus they go together well)
Seeing those beautiful little children sit around the table filling their little stomachs with food from the hard work of what this man and his wife have prepared. As a man, this touched me deeply. Sometimes what you do to provide, nobody will know, and nobody will say thank you. But just seeing them eat up and put that fried chicken in their little mouths. Man. This is what life is about

Growing your own food is a great way to connect to the land and the people and animals who have inhabited it before us. And when growing food regeneratively, we can ensure that the land remains healthy enough to provide for the generations to come! Thanks for watching!
@Life with Lex, as a African American who just got started into gardening, i can attest there is something rejuvenating to the spirit when you get your hands in soil, so I fully know how you feel and to think these people are doing it and making a modest living doing it and seeing the joy in their face is priceless. How they are working with one another instead of against one another is also spirit building, MAAT.
I am really happy that younger generations are moving out of the city and start farming. True independence. I fully believe big cities remove our sense of community and drive use to insanity. Everyone should watch mouse utopia. Reminds me of the decay of our big cities in the US.

Derek and Paige are awesome! I love you guys 😃
Love these folks.
This is great. They're talking about 400 hens for laying and I want 12 lol. Starting is the hard part for sure. We've been saving for the building rinse, wash, and repeat for lack of better terms. That's also a possible way to do things for folks who don't have a ton of capital. We set a five year goal to build, so long term. We had the cash to shop for land when we set the goal. We found land paid cash. Saved for three years got the well. Saved another year put in the foundation and built a good shed. Next build the house. I won't lie, it's SO MUCH WORK! But nothing in life is easy. Good on these folks for working to achieve their goals. I think in my personal opinion of course that if more folks worked towards a positive goal we'd have way less issues to deal with. Mostly cause we'd all be too busy for messing around with nonsensical matters!!
