This scene was amazing, the way Kiku moved so that Blackthorne was looking at Mariko. And the way Mariko started the translation saying ‘she’ but started saying ‘I’ as she realised her desires. The subtlety in this show is top tier. Kiku’s talent seems to be that she knows what others want, she knew that Yabushige liked to watch and she figured out that Mariko and Blackthorne had feelings for each other and needed that moment together. Excellently filmed.

I love how this show has both subtitles and the translation. There’s a lot of subtle characterization going on for Mariko. Of course she translates diplomatically (usually drops the translation when Anjin says something rude or uncooth) or when she protects her catholic faith, but in this scene and the scene where he thanks Kiku and bids farewell. This whole convo she drops nearly every compliment he gives Kiku and notably doesn’t translate when she invites him to visit (“I’ll be counting the moments..) it really was kinda cute lol she was protecting HER man.

"Presence is felt most keenly in absence."
    That's a wonderfully simple truth!

A more direct hint that Kiku suspects Anjin prefers Mariko and her absence will be keenly felt by him. Similarly, for Mariko, having spent so much time with Anjin, she too will feel his absence, especially knowing that he will be experiencing physical pleasure with Kiku.

Mariko when it comes to Global Politics: "I will make sure that my translation is as accurate as possible and as if my life depends on it"
Mariko in the Geisha House: "He seems to prefer his homeland"

This scene is a masterclass in direction and writing. So many layers to what's going on. Kiku moving to the side so that the conversation becomes an intimate moment between just Mariko and John works perfectly both as an in-universe choice from Kiku who knows those two are in love and gives them that moment, and from a technical scene-making standpoint that makes the translation so much more engaging for viewers by putting the audience right into the intimacy with the way the camera moves. You can viscerally feel the rising tension and desire erupting from the screen. This is how you write romance. It's sensual, hot, painful, heartbreaking. All without the characters jumping on each other. All done with subtlety and nuance. I think this is the best scene in whole show.

I thought it was terrible. Kiku wouldn't be so stupid to make suggestions or hints like that to a client. She would only dishonor her client but also her employer. She is supposed to help ease her clients to relax and have a nice evening. That's what she was hired to do. Yes Kiku knew there was something going on between Mariko and John but she wasn't sly or stiff. In fact she was sympathetic because of her situation with Omi. Also I disliked how John was written like an idiot here. He had spent enough time with Mariko and Fuji not to be too ill at ease. In fact John had seen Kiku previously and was a gentleman.

Maybe i'm wrong or just over analyzing but i can't shake the feeling that Kiku secretly knows or understands some Portuguese, when Anjin says "You pour very well". She immediately smiles with delight instead of looking over to Mariko for a translation.

The emotional complexion to this scene is deep if you read into it and look a bit deeper. She has an 8 fold fence being broken down against her will and she is becoming in conflict with her beliefs and her past in the same way blackthorn is.

A wonderful scene. And it is really funny how obviously jealous Mariko is, working in skewed translations: "He seems to prefer his homeland" 🤣
Well, but if i had been Blackthorne, i would have fallen in love with Mariko, too...

    • @victorpradha9946

I think the director knew and designed for the audience to fall in love with Mariko, giving her both vulnerability and poise but a kind if defiance and courage that makes us want to see her prevail. THIS is what is so heartbreaking when we know she will not leave Osaka alive. Right there within her reach, but exceeding her grasp, is a chance at her OWN chosen happiness, having connected with Blackthorne who truly sees Mariko for herself, and not what she represents--a translator, a dutiful wife, a vassal of Lord Toranaga, an emissary, a liaison between the Portuguese and Toranaga, and in the end, a martyr. And yet, her drive for personal vengeance against all the noble and prominent Houses, the Regents of the Council and even to stick it to Lady Ochiba No Kata, Mariko chooses death. All of them held their titles, their nobility, their status and prestige. They too had benefited from the removal of Kuroda was leader. Lady Ochiba, daughter of Kuroda, herself married Taiko, the man replacing her father. The blame was all laid on Mariko's father. And for that, she would NOT forgive them and wanted to visit disgrace upon them all. Lady Ochiba shamed by Mariko's sacrifice and realizing Ishido and the Council's weakness and persuaded by Mariko's loyalty to Toranaga, switches her allegiance.
Mariko had two paths ahead of her. Join Blackthorne, leave Japan and perhaps the two can make a life for themselves somewhere. Alternatively, Mariko could press her suit against the Council of Regents and the noble Houses of Osaka. She chose to do the later because of her sense of duty but also because in death she could accomplish more than she could in life.

I was so confused cuz I was like so why is it called Willow world Kiku!!! now I get what she means.. not a good english translation..

I'm not crazy about this scene. It made Blackthorne look like an idiot. He was supposed to be intelligent and a gentleman with Kiku. Mariko was bit patronizing and Kiku sounded offended. The male bashing was uncalled for. I get they wanted to highlight the sexual tension between Blackthorne and Mariko but Kiku being an adept Lady of The Willow World wouldn't hint or make subtle suggestions to her clients because that will only ruin her chances of moving up in life.
