They fell in love in a hopeless situation. Wrong time, wrong place... everything was against them. A really well-written love story that makes you suffer with them. Well done, Anna and Cosmo, for the portrayal that was absolutely fantastic and worthy of these characters. It's unforgettable.
She is the most powerful, compelling Actor I've experienced in years. Please, give her a Grammy, give her an Oscar, give her the world! Just get her back in front of us again, in a similar role, we crave more!
Well, she doesn't do J-Pop anymore, so a Grammy is out of the question. She's more apt to receive an Emmy. And the Oscars are only for Films, not TV Miniseries. That would be the Golden Globes. LOL
It broke ME when she died and it broke me again when John and Fuji were sitting alone and John said "No translator." Her presence was felt most in her absence.
"No translator." Yeah that broke me. That man loved her more than anything and she only got a moment of happiness with him compared to the negative that was her husband. "Life isn't fair for those who are true." - Ryhah Fukuora
If you think long and hard about Mariko’s journey, you will realize that, by being a pawn for Toranaga, she came out as the author of her fate and won in the end. Before the current time period of the show, thanks to her father’s actions, Mariko lost her honor and her identity as a samurai. She couldn’t even restore her honor by suicide because she was not permitted to die. She was reduced to Buntaro’s property. The abuse she faced from Buntaro and society may have compelled her to become a Christian, an identity to fill in for her robbed identity. When Toranaga put his plan into motion, it gave Mariko an opportunity to get back what she lost. From some viewers’ point of view, Toranaga used Mariko to achieve his victory over Ishida by sending her to Osaka. I like to think that by serving Toranaga, Mariko used her service to regain her honor and her identity as a samurai, even it meant death by her hand or someone else’s hand. When she attempted seppuku, Blackthorne volunteered to be her “second.” Perhaps, that is when Mariko truly fell in love with Blackthorne because the latter respected the former’s choice to die with honor as a samurai. Her affection for Blackthorne was much more than when he asked her to live for him. Unlike Buntaro, Blackthorne saw Mariko as a person whose choices should be respected as well as anyone else’s choices. During her last stand, Mariko gained back what she lost. She regained her honor and her identity. She may not have defeated a 100 enemies with a katana like what people see in Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, or Kill Bill but Mariko was a sobering and refreshing look at what it means to be a samurai.
Mariko was no PAWN being used by Toranaga. She had PURPOSE once again when she accepted has plan, knowing full well it could mean her death. She was a willing participant, not being used although her agreeing to take part in (be) Crimson Sky was mutually beneficial. She regained her purpose, she was able to serve her Lord, she would restore her family's honor, she could possibly gain her freedom from Buntaro and join her family through death if it came which would have been better than living knowing Buntaro would not allow her death or to be with Blackthorne through divorce. There was no way she couldn't come out a winner through agreeing to take part with Toranaga's plan.
All the women in this show, so principled and so strong. Loved how honorable and strong they made the female characters but not without vulnerabilities and insecurities and flaws.
Mariko Sama: "If I could use words / Like scattering flowers and falling leaves / What a bonfire my poems would make..." Me and Blackthorne: "Ashes left behind / Memories are all that's left" 😭😭😭😭😭
This is the only time i can remember since AGOT where i have wanted romance between two characters, they threatened to kill her off then save her just to kill her off. Just finished the series and i feel kinda empty
Enjoyed the show but as someone who read the book years ago and has re-read it again recently it’s shame how much of Mariko & Blackthorne relationship is left out.
yeah a lot of the Blackthorne/Mariko love story was left out that's why I like the 80s version a lot more than the new version I also like the 80s Blackthorne/Mariko more than the never version Blackthorne/Mariko
Man this was the saddest series have i ever seen..I am the only one who thinks that!I was so broken wathing this..Fuck i miss mariko. It breaks me into pieces thinking about how was john feeling after returning to the village..Man i fucking cried
I agree I enjoyed the 80s Shogun a lot more than the new Shogun because of the love story which was a big part in the novel. I liked the 80s Blackthorne/Mariko a lot more than the new Blackthorne/Mariko
I've seen them both and read the book. This version said more w/o actually having to say more. Their looks, their small gestures and making more of what little time they did share in this version was much more profound than showing as much as they did in the 80's version.
I really admire your work and I really enjoy watching videos with this style. I would like you to make a romantic music video with several scenes of the couple Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip from the series The Crown with the song "A Thousand Years" by singer Christina Perri and if possible, preferably try to leave the song subtitled with the translation into Brazilian Portuguese. But if you can't subtitle it in Portuguese, you can make the video clip without subtitles. What matters is the intention. I will be very happy if you can respond to my comment and also fulfill my request.
Sorry for his family who would never know his fate, but in his shoes, knowing you were never going to be allowed to return to your home country you would stay celibate? Highly unlikely. You either wither and die from the loneliness and let it consume you or you choose to live the best life you can while you still can. Keep in mind, his fate was sealed in Japan. Why not make the best of it.
William Adam's life story shows that he did send money back to his wife in England on Dutch trading ships. Hirado Island in Nagasaki Prefecture was where the trading mission was and William Adams also had a house there that still exists, now a Japanese sweet shop!

She won it😺😺
Broke my heart when she died
And you are not alone with that...
This show was so brutal. Made you genuinely care for its characters.
It broke ME when she died and it broke me again when John and Fuji were sitting alone and John said "No translator." Her presence was felt most in her absence.

Wow - thank you for this explanation- so helpful!!
I want 1,000 more episodes all about Mariko. 💔💔💔
I love how Anna Sawai is truly bilingual, and her British-sounding (??) accent is lovely; suits this film
I think she was born in New Zealand. Moved to Yokohama when she was 10 years old.
Fabulous series. Hope it will be remembered at Emmy Awards season. Most especially Anna and the rest of the cast. Truly a wonderful and touching story
Well it was, and then some....!!!
The affection was subtle
but so powerful
All the women in this show, so principled and so strong. Loved how honorable and strong they made the female characters but not without vulnerabilities and insecurities and flaws.

Still flabbergasted at how sad but beautiful this was....
I remember the heartbreaking love story of Anjin and Mariko that was torn apart by the times.
That was a beautiful work of edit. Thank you
The actors did a great job in this series, but i loved and appreciated the Love story in the 1980's version of the series so much more!
Why?
Love Anna. Such a wonderful and talented actor. Her death saddened me.
Thank you for this edit
Brilliant editing and music!
Loved the book!
read the book so long ago....and watched the series with Richard Chamberlain..so happy to see this
This is the only time i can remember since AGOT where i have wanted romance between two characters, they threatened to kill her off then save her just to kill her off. Just finished the series and i feel kinda empty
Starcrossed lovers. For never was there a story of more woe than this of Mariko and her Blackthorne.
This series will always be one of the best and most unforgettable for me, but I can't watch it again because its sadness always affects me.

Try cramming that to a 10 episode show 😂
I think she liked him from the first time she saw him ijs.....
i don't think she liked him at that time, but probably just curious and wants to know more about him tho.
@istiyantiafifahfadhilah5807 I met I think she was attracted to him
The white mans charm

They barely even touched on their relationship in this version, go watch the 80's version for the Love Story.......
What was different
@@sharklatto3244 Watch it, it was a huge part of the story in the first one.
That was done on purpose so that their love story doesn't overshadow the political themes of the show

Blackthorn and his actor are by far the weakest parts of the whole show
I hated this guy. Why did they cast him
Womp
They clearly felt he was brilliant in the role, and they were right imo. But to each their own.
he looked like a kid to me not a groen man😂
