Discussing the cost of a prost over tea but with a tension like they are waging war.
For this amount of money Im not suprised, beside its diferent culture, prostitutes had actual social status there, something unmaginable in western world :O
Truly japanese.
No wonder anime rise up there
@@IzabellaRequiem best kept that way.
It's actually "courtesan" not a mere prost. They're highly skilled artisans, who provide lots of different entertainment, that's why they're costly and regarded highly. The highest ranking of courtesans (Geisha) actually do not offer s*x.
@@JohnathanTrinity Ha. They fk your wallet instead.
Fujiko low-key sipping her tea like the “Ohhhhhhhhhh Cat” from Shrek when Mariko gets asked if she’ll be joining the Anjin and consort! 😆👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Time for a kitkat.
She literally did the Kermit the Frog meme of sipping his tea
That had me in stitches 🍵🐸
The brothel owner is so shrewd, she saw what Mariko really wanted and offered it on a silver platter for a price. Silence costs 300...
This is the way.
Still cheaper than marriage
@@oddish2253 You got that right brother.
@@oddish2253marriage is grand. Divorce is a hundred grand
And Mariko would be a fool to accept, or even to hint that her relationship with Anjin is anything but professional. Brothel owner would use that information for blackmail and extortion.
Lady Fuji was certainly enjoying the tennis match - best seat in the house. I wonder what her internal dialogue is like.
When fuji sips the tea - i knew exactly in her mind 😂
@@jd5179 Exactly. Thats the wonder of Moeka Hoshi (Fuji) she can convey so much with just her eyes and subtle facial expressions.....or with a pistol if need be.
"In the next 30 seconds, they will either agree a price, or murder eachother"? 😉
What I like about this show is the subtlety, the way they never spoon feed you things, like the way the mama-San places her cup and the way mariko response to it, it's the level of passive aggression you only know by growing up in a Japanese family or being married to a Japanese woman who's mother and aunts always frigging visits
LOL - Likewise the scene where they make the Anjin dive into the water over and over again as a way to get him to bathe - too subtle for Anjin to get worried about "the flux" but still got him cleaned up.
can you share what about the way she placed her cup and the intended meaning?
@@9razzler9She received it with care, thereby using two hands delicately. Then finding out it’s a low quality cup, placing it back down with one hand not so delicately. Then after that, realising it’s not the Lord booking Kiku, it’s the Anjin, she again places it down with one hand and makes a noise - it’s very rude lol. I’m Japanese and if I’m a visitor in someone’s house, I would definitely treat their lacquerware and cups very delicately.
So this is why it felt so uncomfortable without being able to point a finger at exactly what they were doing 😂
Fuji san sipping her tea like "dammnnnn girl"
lol. Yeah. I feel like that was a happy accident that the editors decided to keep in.
@@Kayoss13212 No, it was deliberate performance which got the entire crew to chuckle.
I loved it when Fuji sip the tea when relationship between Mariko and Anjin brought up
I love how you're paying attention to Fuji in this scene 🎉👍

You could say Fuji is picture cute.
Fuji-san:

She is fabulous in every scene she’s in!!❤
Fuji: 😏☕️
My best part of the episode 😊😊😊

Mariko : “she is a gift for the Anjin…”
Mama- san : 😵💫
LMAO!
Gin thinks: so tonight we will be a normal house after all.
I cannot find it but apparently there is an article out there somewhere that says that the actress playing Fuji had everyone laughing with her extremely cute facial expressions and the way she sips that tea at certain moments.
Not just an article, but The Ringer Prestige TV podcast just did an episode with the show-runners on as guests. They recounted the story of Moeka Hoshi-san making the entire crew guffaw with her reaction in this episode.
Passive aggressive politeness from all three😂
Fuji’s got top tier side eye 😂😍
One of the best scenes so far, dialog and acting were a clinic, bravo. The polite decorum on top of a heavyweight boxing match, brilliant
In the book, Mariko mops the floor with the brothel owner by setting etiquette traps that force her to make several price cuts.
So much dialog happening with the Tea cups; the way they're placed down. Beyond my comprehension.
what's the meaning of the way they placed it?
Now that’s negotiation
General Grievous "AH THE NEGOTIATOR!"
Fuji literally drinking tea: "damn thats some fine tea and I aint talking about the beverage"
In the novel it was described as mariko locking horns with a worthy opponent this is about as close as one could possibly come to bringing that moment to life I will be watching this interaction over and over it will never get old seriously😱👍✌🏻❤️🍆🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
When my eye catches a mysterious looking person, it just seems natural to be interested in them.
The Japanese actresses's eyes are incredibly charming, beautiful, and mysterious. I fell in love with them all. OMG!
But truly, most Fuji right? ❤❤❤
なんて事ないシーンだけどこのシーンめちゃめちゃ良かった。
この女将が凄く良かった。
now that i listened to this conversation in isolation it is most terryfying. they smilled all the time meanwhile you get the impression daggers were drawn and being but to effective use
Man I gotta say, Gyoko (the brothel owner) is a stunning woman. Imagine meeting her…she’d rock your world
They really made her look garish with that makeup
Agree about Lady Gin being stunning - I looked up the actress that played her (Yûko Miyamoto) and she just turned 55 yrs old.
Her voice....it's her voice
MILF 😊
and your wallet!
I do not wish to buy all the Tea Houses in Izu, only the lady's services for one evening. Savage. lol
loose translation: the price is too high. maybe I'll go to the competition.
I've never seen such tense negotiation on screen.
The book makes the point that Mariko wouldn't sleep with her husband and was used to negotiating professional services for him.
There is a small difference, then she cared very much about the success of these negotiations, but here it was the opposite.
A courtesan is not merely a prostitute.
They are well educated and have trained in many arts. Obviously a famous courtesan must have earned a reputation
In Europe even at this time courtesans could even have influence and power
Such as Madame du Barry, they even had titles "Maîtresse-en-titre" (chief royal mistress of the King of France)
Theodora of Byzantium if my Civ 5 taught me anything.
One might recall "The Pompadour" a courtesan of the French royal court, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson born in 1721 who had influence and power, eventually becoming the official chief mistress of the French King.
In these negotiations, Mariko makes it clear that these advantages will not matter in the evening.
Fuji still continues to be #1 girl and she’s barely doing anything 😊
So interesting to see a Madame of sengoku Japan. And you know with Sanada as producer that it is historically accurate.
Mariko also did well to let mamasan think its for Toranaga.
haha, yes, she got them to admit the courtesan was available, before saying it was for the English pirate.
0:38 LOL the look on Fujisama's face: "Are you hearing this Mariko? better call the whaaaaambulance"
Fuji wasn't present in the negotiations in the book. She was injured in the quake at Anjiro but damn she's a scene stealer in this scene.
This! This is how asian parents haggle!!
That was definitely a "Your Momme" conversation
Man, Mariko-sama drives a hard bargain, that's for sure.
Love the detail of Mariko watching Gin put the cup down noisily and rudely, then Mariko putting the cup down differently. Then Fuji taking a drink of tea to hide her reaction.
Fuji san is all of us
yes lol
1:52
everyone's talking abt Fuji sipping her tea but i love that little look she gives Gin when Gin gets all shifty at the idea of sending Kiku to serve the Anjin. like, "u got smth to say?"
reminds me a little bit of when Fuji deflects Buntaro's stealth insult of her being married to a barbarian by politely reminding him that she's married to a _hatamoto._
I half expect daggers to be drawn between them.
That was the intention...in the book, Mariko realizes that they know of her affair...she then starts scheming ways to destroy the Mama-san...They arent playing around.
@@projektkobra2247 mariko got her scheme to work?
@@Vsm426 In the end Mama-san got what she wanted, which was to have her son elevated to samurai class, and the loot for Kiku's contact, and nobody ratted out anyone else, so Mariko did not have to have Mama-san fall victim of an unfortunate accident..

So sad and awkward for mariko. Having to do that while being in love with him and hading him off to the prostitute.
Great acting and great scene. Well done.
Supperb writing and dialogue!
Fuji's response about the lacquerware was *chef's kiss*
Who needs Kiku when you have Fuji and Mariko?😊
Kiku is pretty damn hot to
1:56 if you listen carefully you even hear the sip on that tea HAHAHA love this scene
Is there any significance on the tightly cropped shots of the cups being placed back down to the table/floor?

Definition of sipping tea?
What is the context of the tea? Picking it up, putting it back down, never taking a sip?
I read somewhere that monme is a unit of measurement for the weight of silk, i dunno
There is actually a good reddit response on it. Some person that knew the value of monme (silver coin weighing 3.75 grams) and koku (one year of rice for one person) and the cross values of gold, silver, and rice calculated in today's prices that 300 monme would be about $900 and Blackthorne's annual fief of 400 koku would be about $509,000 for context.
“All of this I guarantee…for so very little.” I LOVE when cunning women play their matches of wit like this! 😂❤
1:53 Fuji : Hmm...my thoughts exactly
What is the significance of facing the pattern on the cup toward Lady Mariko?
I don’t know but I love it. It looks like they are trading blows by putting down chess pieces
In a tea ceremony the image on the cup has to be turned before they can drink from it that’s why you see them turn it
@@ErinBatchelor-gw1wp But notice that Lady Mariko did the opposite. Maybe it is a secret code for 'no' (not happy) or 'yes' (happy) during negotiation.
@@wuzhai2009 yes I did notice and most bets and agreements are made over tea to seal deals
I don't know what is going on with the cups. I've watched that scene about 10 times just watching the cups trying to figure out the significance but its lost on my gaijin head. I know the tea ceremonies are very deliberate and there are no random movements and the cups obviously have significance in this scene I just don't know what it is.
300 monme?about 30bucks.you´ll be treasured.

Better negotiations than PawnStars
If this show was supernatural I'd think this chick turns into a demon.
Anyone else suspect Gramma Hoe have Anjin san a blow to remember too ?
Will Fuji gonna be end game for Anjin?
No, the Anjin-san is in love with Mariko, and not attracted to Fujiko at all, though he respects and admires her. In the book she is described as much less attractive than she is depicted here.
was she really throwing shade at the wares??😅
I think it was a veiled jab at Fuji being from a once-respectable family line (with money) and now she is poor because her father was a traitor and she is considered socially tainted.

You lack understanding and respect for culture of Japan that still exists. The role of the Geisha are entertainers not prostitutes though they may enter into private arrangements with admirers that differs to that of the accomplished courtesan a much respected occupation.
@@checreates perhaps...you should actually read the book...study Japanese culture and history and not rely on the interpretation of a commercial entity... Geisha were never prostitutes.
@@robindawtrey9735 I did a brief Google search and it seems YOU are correct. I thought I had read that it did happen in the past, but not today. Why would they allow this in the show, then? They were so incredibly detailed in their approach and research. Was the house even, then, a Geisha house? I only saw it referred to as a brothel.
@@checreatesdon't forget Clavell's book is afterall a work of fiction based on a very real Anjii Englishman of that period but written with artistic licence as they say. The original TV adaption of 'Shogun' starring Richard Chamberlain...which the current generations don't watch...was far more 'true' to the book. The current production is very entertaining...but again it has commercial considerations...and adapts the book to time constraints and audience interests. I've spent a great deal of time in Japan in the past, my son is married to a Japanese...my admiration for them, their culture and history is boundless. 😁
Much better in the book
I was kind-of excited for this series, as the book is one of my favorites; but there are so many points where I can't tell if they didn't read the book or did but just didn't understand it.
No, you didn't invent Geisha, and "the willow world" is not unique to your tea house, nor would Mariko (and everyone else in the country) not already be completely familiar with it.
What IS disturbing is that the historian missed the white teeth. White teeth were considered vulgar and low class. Upper class ladies blackened thier teeth and never displayed an open mouth.
While I think you are correct I am glad they skipped the black teeth and am not disturbed about it in the least.
Weird way of thinking
@@TravellerTinker cultures are weird in general. women in the west used to wear corsets and some pass out from it because of lack of oxygen
I don't agree with that. Black teeth indicate a history of inflammation of the dental pulp and the presence of dead teeth. This is evidentiary evidence of a past illness and such action is like exposing other disease defects. For example, like showing smallpox scars. This is clear proof that a person does not care about hygiene, which is especially important there.
The Scene is only half as funny as in the Book
2:24 scary as heck
"Then, will you be joining him? I've heard you and the Anjin are never seen apart"
Ouch! Even the brothels know about Mariko and Anjin's relationship
Well, there is only one barbarian in the village and when he walks around they watch him the same way they would watch a sasquatch walking about town....oh, and by the way, Mariko Sama, the high born lady from Osaka, is also with him.
Not really that surprising, imagine Princess Leonor and a pirate from Somalia strolling through the streets of Madrid.
