the worst she can say is no.
Her abusive husband asked her to commit suicide with him. My "no" would have been a lot more forceful (and rude) than her refusal was.
I think he got the worst of it
That has got to be THE most civilised and courteous marital row in screen history.
Except the parts where he beats her
And yet also the most savage. She made it horribly, crystal clear how she was/had always been permanently alienated from him.
Aside from the times he beat her
As someone who considered this dude an asshole for the entirety up until now, this was really sad to be honest.
Because it shows why he was such an asshole. Dude was locked into a miserable marriage to someone who despised him.
@@colton6867He isn't locked in. He could divorce her if he wanted but he refused. She had no choice. (couldn't divorce him).
And she might've started hating him AFTER he became abusive, we don't know.
@@bethanymcdermott3954 He was already despised from the beginner because of his character. After trying to get close to her and failing, he could've just killed her or let her go. He did none.
@@bethanymcdermott3954Buntaro also didn't allow her to do seppuku and didn't bring confort to her.
A remarkable scene that shows Buntaro is as much a casualty of ritual and tradition as Mariko. He offers her the (false) dignity of joining him in death, all wrapped in the beautiful solemnity, the principled courtesy of the tea ceremony --- completely missing his "target" in ways his martial skills would never allow; he cannot possess Mariko in life, so he chooses to possess her in death. Every hour of every day, Mariko operates within ritual's tight ambit, but she has (quietly) seen beyond this, learning to value her own life, choosing Anjin, and exercising a degree of power Buntaro can only dream of. In this scene, she is freer than Buntaro and knows it.
"Dude, I should've died the hero's dead back in Osaka"
😂
😂😂😂😂
Well his relationship was dead as fish out of sea
He slapped and humiliated her at the earliest opportunity, what did he expect (?)
I think he's delusional to some degree, he loves her so much but she never loved him back, and deep down he knew this and got frustrated over the years.
@@nistatoonits pride. not some selfless love.
he cant stand someone of her kind wont love him.
@@thlee3 and entitlement
@@pookpook3891well. He’s actually entitled to it with their social standard at the time.
@@thlee3I think this is a watered-down interpretation of his character. He's much more complicated than simple ego.
Buntaro having an L marathon this week.
Buntaro having an L marathon this whole show
James Clavel had a habit of handing L's on Buntaro in everyday basis
Abusers typically try the nice guy bit to get thier way. She declined commiting suicide with him I'm shocked he didn't shoot more arrows at her face again.
Which is amazing considering the Japanese language doesn't even have the letter L and Bunty here is stacking em high
@@theghostinthemirror8158 he have the W at the dock
then it all went to L from there
I honestly do feel bad for buntaro, but it doesn't change the fact he brought this on himself for everything he did to mariko. so it's a little hard to say he didn't have it coming.
It’s much more complex than that.
Her father threw Japan into conflict, and his actions destroyed the peace that the previous Taiko worked hard for. There’s a very large chance that Buntaro has fought in battles that were caused by her father’s actions.
He doesn’t dislike her, although he does seem to truly disdain her lineage (common at the time in Japan; you died for your family’s sins). Her marriage to him has become a source of scorn: his wife is the daughter of *that man*. But he likes her, so won’t let her kill herself. She’s cold to him, so being the emotionally repressed man that he is, he responds violently and beats her. However, the show never hints that he has sexually abused her, which means he values her honour. He doesn’t know how to reach her, so he’s very jealous that Blackthorne has succeeded easily where he has failed repeatedly.
Mariko has had to endure his harsh treatment, but I don’t think she has ever tried to warm up to him, even when he was putting in effort. She’s so guilt-stricken by her father’s crimes that all she wants to do is die.
Buntaro is a super interesting character, one of the best in the show. Fiercely loyal, yet emotionally immature; really strong yet strangely shaky; good son, good vassal and soldier, trash husband. He’s watching his world fall apart. In the course of the show, his brother-in-law, nephew, and father have all died. He himself was left for dead and barely survived. Man had been through a lot.
A perfect specimen for the human condition. You win some, you lose some. Whatever happens at the end of the journey, the goal that is set at the very beginning and every step taken from that day on should be the finding of thy self. Everything else is sunset and sunrise, the waves crashing to the shore, the falling of leaves and the dew in a rose's petals.@@emmanuela7528
@emmanuela7528 dude this should be a top comment not hidden in reply. It explains a lot of the mixed feelings towards him that I have. How shitty he's been to mariko and yet I can't shake the sadness that I feel for him.
@@emmanuela7528 That is a very good explanation. I agree with you, but to me it still doesn't justify the bad things he's done to her, and even fuji. There is pity for him, even if mariko was icy towards him as a result.
@@emmanuela7528 I think we understand everything you said... but nothing excuses abuse. This was a brutal takedown by Mariko but knowing that he beat her, I can't feel bad for him at all.
The disrespect for her bloodline that has been passed onto their son...he deserves nothing.
That’s one shallow way to see things. I myself feel bad for them both.
@@fchho I feel sympathy for him having to be the one to help end his Da and that is it.
@@fchhoagreed.
I never thought I’d almost cry watching someone prepare some tea 😮
>I don't love you [X] >I'd rather live a thousand yeas in misery, longing for death every single day, than die with you now [V]
Buntaro-san reaped what he sowed .
Feel bad for both of them😢
This is actually a pretty normal Japanese relationship.
Gawd damn@@DrCruel
@@orcloverogrefiend5644 Just telling the truth. I didn't invent any of this.
This was one of the most beautiful yet saddest scene. The guy really loved his wife.
A very symbolic ceremony showing what could have been and what is. The elegance, the rough cups and the buds refusing to flower.
The very definition of serving him tea 😂😂😂
En el momento en que Mariko se niega a morir junto a Buntaro y le expresa que preferiría vivir mil años, oí como el kokoro de ese hombre se volvía añicos
Let it be know that Anjin-sama had the last taste of Mariko-Sama's cake. I know who my hatamoto is! xD
How to edit the soul out of a scene 101
It hurts
*sad buntaro noises*
Thats why i choose coffee than a tea time. Lesson, samurai make strong tea, too strong for peaceful time.
the worst she can say is I want a divorce
lady stone heart mariko dono
mariko sama
But Lady Blossom for Anjin Sama.
Yes, she wasn't lady stone with anjin😮 the bwc must have gone crazy

Buntaro may be an asshol but damn if he isn't cool
This was the best scene so far in this series. The music.. the aura... the scene? Perfect. Absolutely ace.
In fairness we don't know what kind of husband he has been either......in the show he comes off as a serious hothead and she seems straight up afraid once he's drunk.....
O cara trata a mulher que nem uma quenga, não poderia esperar menos.
Simping samurais is just too funny
thats his wife.. it ain't simping
@abirbinhabib7669 you actually have a point
You can feel bad for him as a character but he had it coming as a trash husband.

When men don't understand simple hints and cry after being rejected 😅
You will understand what if feels like to simp and be denied
I mean she’s his wife at that stage so it’s going to hurt either way.
@@bentooreo9849 everybody at some point faces rejection, such is life. It's how you respond to it- either with dignity or disgrace.
@@lila2986 It's not just your response with dignity or disgrace. It can be a feeling of pain you cannot control so you cannot let it go away easy.
You should turn it around. Their is always a way to prevent people from feeling to much pain from rejection. Rejection is easy, getting rejected is not.
@@lila2986 You know nothing of life.
The Show should have started or next spin-off with Oda Nobunaga Journey from Childhood.
Uh no? The book it was adapting is about how Tokugawa Ieyasu seized power after Toyotomi Hideyoshi died.
My opinion of Buntaro as a man just plummeted...
Even Cinderella didn’t cry…
Am I supposed to hate Mariko and John Blackthorne? Bc I really do lol.
FACTS! Buntaro is a great warrior who survived death and then has to sleep in the same house as the man his wife had an affair with. On top of the fact his wife hates him for decisions her father made. And you can see him constantly reaching for her but she "gives him nothing". As a viewer you sit there and ask "what did he do to deserve this?".
What do you expect from an arrange marriage where women have no say in who they are expected to spend the rest of their lives with and marry complete strangers
@@Lightingwarrior Perfectly normal in history, where women couldn't sleep with a hundred guys and then find a simp after hitting 30 to pay their way after.
@@ayanithtalreign yes it was normal back then for arrange marriages but that still didn't means the the women had to love their husbands whom they were force to marry
Uhhh did you even watch the show lol? He's physically abusive to her and cold to their son. Mariko has zero reason to care about him.
All arranged marriages are the same.
No love to begin with - just business or financial agreements.
Judicial rape in other words
not always, I personally know people in arranged marriage that are in love and would disagree with you. Don't victimize everything as rape.
